Redmi Note 9 Indian Variant found in Wi-Fi Alliance listings, may launch soon

Back in April 2020, Xiaomi had launched the Redmi Note 9 through an online conference. The device is mid range handset and is the latest successor to the popular Redmi Note series. Now, an Indian variant of the device has been spotted on Wi-Fi Alliance‘s official website, which may imply an imminent launch in India. The news was first reported on by Mukul Sharma (@stufflistings) on Twitter.

For those unaware, the Redmi Note 9 features a 6.43 inch IPD LCD display with an FHD+ (1080 x 2340px) resolution. It is powered by a large 4,920mAh battery and features a quad camera setup on the rear. MediaTek’s Helio G85 is housed under the hood alongside 4GB, 6GB, and even 8GB of RAM. In terms of storage, a 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB variants are offered respectively.

The Redmi Note 9 being spotted on the Wi-Fi Alliance’s official website does imply that a launch could arrive soon, although an official date is yet to be announced. So, the Redmi Note 9 could also mark the arrival of the new major software upgrade for the Indian Redmi and Xiaomi smartphone users.

Unfortunately, apart from the listings, we have nothing to more to go on. The Chinese tech giant may announce a launch date or a teaser soon, but a launch within this month is unlikely. As the Indian government plans on relaxing the mandatory lockdown in various regions, we may hear more from smartphone OEMs and their product launch dates. So stay tuned.

Razer to use face mask vending machines in Singapore for distributing millions of masks

Razer, the company known for making gaming products, has revealed its plan to help people in the Singapore fight against the COVID-19. The company said that it will deploy 20 face masks vending machines across the country by the end of this month to distribute millions of masks for free.

It’s noteworthy that the company’s global operations are based in Singapore. The company’s CEO CEO Min-Liang Tan said that “Razer will continue our endeavours in supporting Singapore to be self-sufficient for face masks as a nation.”

Razer Face Mask Vending Machine

To pick up a mask from the vending machine, the company says that users will have to download its digital wallet app and scan a QR code. Razer is already making masks and is now planning to double that production.

The company’s plan is to give all Singaporean adult residents one free surgical mask, which adds up to about 5 million in total. Once the program kicks off, more locations may be added as per the requirement.

The response from Razer comes as the country is experiencing an alarming second wave of coronavirus infections. It now has more than 23,822 confirmed cases, up from just a few hundred in March.

However, the company is also facing criticism on social media for the requirement of downloading Razer app to get face mask. People are suggesting that the company is trying to pick up more users for its fintech platform Razer Pay.

Responding to the criticism, Min-Liang Tan said that having users scan QR from the app “is the only way we’ll be able to ensure there’s no free for all on the masks … We’re funding this completely ourselves and would like to ensure there’s no fraud.”

Razer said on April 24th that it’s already shipped more than 1 million of those masks all over the world. With plan of offering 5 million masks for free in Singapore, the company is also partnering with plastic manufacturer Sunningdale Tech to up its production to 10 million masks a month.

Galaxy Note 20 series might feature 16GB RAM in all variants

Samsung will be unveiling the Galaxy Note 20 series in the second half of 2020. The long-rumored Galaxy Fold 2 is also expected to debut alongside it. There have been multiple leaks about these two devices over the past few weeks. A new one now suggests the Galaxy Note 20 series to come with 16GB RAM as standard.

As of now, there’s only one Samsung smartphone with 16GB RAM in the market and that is the beefed-up 512GB variant of Galaxy S20 Ultra. But the upcoming Galaxy Note 20 series, on the other hand, could feature 16GB RAM on all models.

This piece of information comes from a recent Q&A session by DSCC CEO Ross Young. The Galaxy Note 20 series is expected to launch in both 4G as well as 5G variants like the Galaxy S20 series. Hence, there is still a confusion if both these versions will have 16GB RAM or only the 5G variant will feature it.

Samsung has already begun the mass production of 16GB LPDDR5 RAM in late February. So it is certain it will be featured in the forthcoming Galaxy Note 20 series and maybe even other high-end devices from different OEMs in the future.

In addition to a huge amount of RAM, the Galaxy Note20 series is expected to feature the following specifications.

Galaxy Note 20 Galaxy Note 20 Plus

Samsung, Huawei and Qualcomm push MPEG-5 video codec for 4K and 8K videos

Industry giants like Samsung, Huawei, and even the chipmaker Qualcomm are backing the MPEG-5 EVC over the HEVC (High Efficiency Video Codec) for high resolution videos. This codec offers reduced file size and better quality, both of which are crucial to 4K and 8K UHD video capture in smartphones.

Samsung
Some smartphones already support 8K video recording

For those unaware, HEVC isn’t a relatively new video codec and has been around for a while. But despite its various positive aspects, the format had never been more widely adopted. The reason for this is the licensing situation around it. Attaining the licensing was apparently so complex that only 12 percent of the internet streaming services adopted HEVC.

But now, a press released from Qualcomm, Samsung, and Huawei may push forward a better alternative to the HEVC video codec. In the press release, the trio stated that they will offer “fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory terms for their respective essential patent claims covering this standard.” In other words, the benefits of MPEG-5 EVC video standard could soon reach customers across various different platforms and even smartphones.

Samsung

Furthermore, a simplified licensing method could also imply wider adoption of MPEG-5 EVC over the existing HEVC. Notably, Google also offers its own royalty free AV1 codec, which is another alternative that is used in popular sites like YouTube, Netflix, and Facebook.

Trump threatens to cut trade ties with China over COVID-19, Chinese media mocks the statement

During this period of crisis, the world is gripped by the Coronavirus pandemic, especially the US that has the highest number of confirmed cases. Now, the US President, Donald Trump, has threatened to cut trade ties with China due to the spread of COVID-19, which Chinese media has mocked by calling it “lunacy.”

US China trade war

While the US struggles with the viral outbreak, the President of the nation has expressed his dismay regarding the Chinese government’s lack of action during the virus’s early stages. Trump had mentioned on various occasions that he shared a good relationship with Xi Jinping, China’s President. However, he further added that he no longer wishes to talk with the latter anymore.

According to Trump, “they should have never let this happen. So I make a great trade deal and now I say this doesn’t feel the same to me. The ink was barely dry and the plague came over. And it doesn’t feel the same to me.” With this, the President of the US said that there are various measures they could take against China, with the most prominent being cutting relationship completely.

Donald Trump believes that the US can save about $500 billion by halting imports from China. This is something he called “lost money,” and stated that this would only seek to benefit the US. In response to this, a state backed Chinese media reporting agency, Global Times, mocked the US leader. Stating, “Such lunacy is a clear byproduct, first and foremost, of the proverbial anxiety that the US has suffered from since China began its global ascension.”

Honor X10 has RYYB sensor for better low-light photography

The Honor X10 5G smartphone debuting on May 20 in China is speculated to arrive as the company’s cheapest 5G smartphone. The first rumors of the Honor X10 had revealed that it will be equipped with an RYYB sensor for better photography even in low-light conditions. Yesterday, the company released the camera samples of the Honor X10 5G to reveal its capabilities at capturing shots in dim-light scenarios. Today, the Chinese firm released an official confirmation on Weibo that the smartphone is equipped with an RYYB image sensor.

Honor X10 RYYB sensor The entire specifications of the Honor X10 5G are known thanks to its TENAA appearance. It revealed that the smartphone has a 40-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 2-megapixel triple camera system. Initial reports of the X10 had revealed it has a Sony IMX600Y 40-megapixel primary shooter. It is the same lens that is available on the Huawei P30 Pro phone from last year.

The below-shown camera shots that were captured around 2 AM at Mount Everest shows how good the X10 can be at shooting photos in extreme low-light conditions. The camera samples do suggest that the X10 will offer better photography experience than its competitor models in the same price segment. Honor is yet to confirm the existence of Honor X10 Pro. Rumors have it that the X10 Pro will come with OIS support for the same main camera.

Galaxy S20 Plus scores only 66 points in DxOMark Audio, On par with last year’s Samsung flagships

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus scores only 66 points in the DxOMark Audio review. That is same as the Galaxy Note 10 Plus from last year. Hence, the handset acquires 11th place, which is way lower than its current competitors.

Galaxy S20 Plus DxOMark Audio

According to the DxOMark review, the Galaxy S20 Plus ‘doesn’t impress with its audio performance’ as a flagship smartphone. Though it is slightly better than its predecessor Galaxy S10 Plus, it is no match for the current-gen premium handsets from other OEMs.

The audio playback from the handset has a well-balanced mid-range and treble with a good rendering of the sound stage. Balance can be even noticed between the stereo channels but the audio from the device lacks bass at all volume levels. Also, the loud high-frequency response at maximum volume spoils the gaming experience.

On the other hand, the phone’s recording capability is better than its playback. The tonal range reproduction is excellent on the Galaxy S20 Plus with clear and intelligible voices. The sound dynamics are well-preserved with good directivity from the microphones. But it is inconsistent in the spatial rendering of sound sources and recording volume level is average at best.

Overall, the Galaxy S20 Plus audio performance in on par or slightly better than Samsung flagship smartphones from last year.

mediatek-5g

As per the report, there will be three engineering schemes for this upcoming 5G-compatible mobile processor, which will be impacting the operating frequency of the chipset — 2.0GHz, 2.2GHz, and 2.6GHz.

Since the chipset will be called Dimensity 820, it will be better in terms of performance and features offers compared to the MediaTek Dimensity 800. But to know more about it, we’ll have to wait for the official launch.

The Dimensity 800, which was launched earlier this year, is a 7nm octa-core processor that comprises of four Cortex A76 cores clocking at 2.0GHz and four Cortex A55 cores working at 2.0GHz. For graphics, it is equipped with Mali-G77MC4 and also comes with its own HyperEngine gaming technology for enhanced gaming experience.

Mi TV Stick product listing exposes specifications and price

Xiaomi is known for many products and one of them is smart TVs as well as related products. The Mi Box S, which recently launched as Mi Box 4K in India is one of the most popular cheap Android TV setup boxes. It initially debuted in late 2018, almost 2 years back. Hence, it is expected to get an upgrade soon. But instead of a box, Xiaomi will be announcing an Android TV stick dubbed as Mi TV Stick.

This is not the first time we are hearing about the Mi TV Stick. It already got leaked with other Xiaomi ecosystem products that are expected to launch in Europe in the coming months. But this time, it has been listed on Gearbest, a Chinese online retailer. As a result of it, we now know the specifications as well as price (sort of).

According to the listing, the Mi TV Stick will be powered by the same Amlogic S905 quad-core processor as the Mi Box S but a Y2 version. Further, graphics will be handled by Mali-G31 GPU and it will come with 2GB RAM along with 8GB internal storage.

It will have support for 4K HDR, DTS-HD, Dolby Audio, Netflix, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, HDMI 2.0, and USB Type-C. It will run Android TV with support for apps and games from the Google Play Store.

Interestingly, the description given on the Gearbest page does not mention remote control. But since the page also mentions the support for Google Assistant, it should definitely come with one.

Last but not least, the price is not given on the product listing page, however, it shows up in search results. According to it, the upcoming Mi TV Stick will cost $79.99, which is $20 more than the launch price of Mi Box S but it could be cheaper than that.

Redmi K30 Pro with a transparent back panel shared by a Xiaomi official

Xiaomi first introduced the Explorer Edition with a transparent back panel on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition which was released in 2018. The company added an Explorer edition to last year’s Mi 9 flagship lineup. But this year, Xiaomi broke pattern when it disclosed earlier this year that the Mi 10 won’t get a transparent version.Redmi K30 Pro Transparent version

That has not prevented the company from experimenting with the transparent panel as a transparent rear panel-bearing Mi 10 was shared a couple of months back by Xiaomi’s Marketing department. The experimentation has now landed in the domain of the Redmi series as a couple of pictures of the Redmi K30 Pro donning a transparent glass panel at the back has been shared. The images were shared on Twitter by Daniel D, Senior Product Marketing Manager and global spokesperson for Xiaomi.

Just like the Mi 10 Transparent model spotted earlier on, the transparent back seems to have been achieved by swapping the back cover with a transparent glass panel. Thus, you get to see the actual internals of the Mi 10 unlike the Mi 9 and Mi 8 Explorer editions that had dummy internals on display. The transparent glass back only had the Redmi logo printed at the bottom using a small font size unlike the Mi 10 which used large fonts. The small font size also gives an unhindered view of the internals.

It is not likely that Xiaomi is planning to release this transparent addition for the Redmi K30 Pro. This may just be a customised version for internal consumption only. Would you like to have this transparent version for your Redmi K30 Pro? Let us know what you think about it in the comments.

Vivo-X50-render

Leaked renders of the smartphone that were spotted recently spotted on Weibo revealed the presence of a rectangular camera module at the backside of the device. HTC U Ear wireless earbuds hits the FCC, images surface

There are only a handful of phone manufacturers that are yet to announce TWS earbuds. Two members of this small group are HTC and OnePlus, but a new leak points at HTC exiting the group soon.

In the coming weeks, HTC may announce its very first TWS earbuds. The earbuds which are named HTC U Ear have been seen on the FCC’s website. The listing includes images too, so we know what it looks like.

HTC has adopted a design similar to that of the AirPods for its TWS earbuds. They come in black and have a gloss finish. The case is shaped like a cube with rounded corners. Unlike the AirPods that sit in the case vertically, the HTC U Ear lies horizontally in the case, thanks to the position of the magnetic charging contacts which are positioned vertically along the stem of the earbuds.

The case charges via USB Type-C but there is no mention of support for wireless charging.

We do not know when HTC will announce the earbuds and how much it will cost. We also cannot say if this is actually a product from HTC or from InOne Smart Technology, the company that licensed the HTC name and went on to announce the Wildfire X in India last year.

AnTuTu Top 10 Best Android processors based on AI performance for April 2020

In recent times, artificial intelligence (AI) has taken a front role in the manufacture of semiconductors for smartphones and other gadgets. AnTuTu has released the top 10 AI processor ranking for the month of April 2020. antutu logo

The ranking is based on data collected on its database when a smartphone is benchmarked. Thus, the performance ranking for April encompasses data collected between April 1 and April 30. The data is based on the average score of the models and not necessarily the highest score obtained. The outfit did not release the name of the specific model that made the ranking but just the processors. Where there are multiple models running the same processor, data from the best performing model is what is recorded.AnTuTu

The listed is dominated by Qualcomm chipsets as five different processors from the US manufactured are on the top 10 list. The Snapdragon 865 is ranked as the best AI chipset around followed by Samsung Exynos 990. Qualcomm Snapdragon 765/765G, Snapdragon 855+ and Snapdragon 855 occupy the third to fifth spots.

MediaTek Helio G90 comes in at the sixth spot while the Snapdragon 730/730G is at number 7. Samsung Exynos 9825 SoC is ranked at umber 8 while the premium MediaTek Dimensity 1000L mid-range SoC is at number 9.

The tenth spot is sort of a surprise as the Hisilicon Kirin 990 is ranked at number 10. We can’t say why the Kirin 990 performed so badly considering that Huawei flaunts its Kirin chipsets for their AI prowess piloted by the Neural Processing Unit (NPU).
