OPPO VP Brian Shen resigns citing personal health reasons

OPPO’s Brian Shen is a popular name among Chinese tech enthusiasts. He often revealed key features of the upcoming OPPO smartphones and talked about the brand’s new technologies. However, earlier today, Brian Shen announced that he was resigning from his post as the president of global marketing and chief marketing officer of OPPO’s Mainland China business citing personal health reasons.

Brian didn’t elaborate on his resignation and we are not sure whether he’ll be back to working at OPPO in any other position. But judging from OPPO’s official statement, it looks like Brian will be taking a break from work.

“Current president of global marketing Brian Shen Yiren will step down from his position due to personal health reasons,” OPPO said in a statement on its website. “We look forward to him returning to the Oppo family.”

Liu Lie, who currently serves as OPPO’s brand director, will take his place as the global marketing president as well as CMO for Mainland China. Liu will report directly to OPPO’s founder and CEO Tony Chen. Liu has been an essential part of OPPO since 2004 and helped create sub-brands such as the OPPO Find and Real series.

Brian’s resignation comes at a time when OPPO is battling Coronavirus across its key markets. While things are slowly getting back to normal in Mainland China, other important markets like India are still in a state of lockdown. And with the sales of smartphones halted, OPPO and other phone makers are looking at zero smartphone sales for the month of April in several markets such as India.

MIUI 12 could be announced by the end of April

There have been a number of rumors and leaks regarding MIUI 12 over the past few weeks. Even some of the changes were teased by the brand itself, whereas few leaked through beta versions of MIUI system apps like MiSettings and MIUI Themes. The rumours do not seem to stop as a new one has just emerged suggesting Xiaomi will release MIUI 12 by the end of April.

MIUI 12

Xiaomi started as a software company with its MIUI Android skin in 2010. Only, a year later, it started manufacturing smartphones and ventured into other businesses as years passed by. The upcoming MIUI 12 will mark the 10th anniversary of MIUI and thus fans around the world are expecting big changes this year.

Earlier in January, the Chinese tech giant confirmed the existence of MIUI 12 but did not reveal anything about it. But as the days went by, new information about the company’s next iteration of mobile software kept popping up every other week. We got to see an alleged release schedule, a report saying Xiaomi stopped development for MIUI 11 beta builds, a list of eligible devices for MIUI 12, changes that are coming in MIUI 12, and revamped Settings as well as MIUI Themes app.

MIUI 12 Release April End

The new rumor originated when Digital Chat Station, a well-known Chinese tipster posted a screenshot on Weibo, which seems to be of the Chinese Mi Community app. In the picture, we can see a dedicated section for MIUI 12 and a toast message at the bottom saying ‘registrations for MIUI will begin in 11 days’. Since this screengrab is from yesterday, the registrations for whatever Xiaomi is planning for MIUI will start in 10 days. That means by the end of April or early May.

Additionally, another Weibo user going by the name of @Geek_Cao posted that MIUI 12 will be released on the 27th or 28th of April. To that, Li Chuangqi, the senior product director of Xiaomi denied by quoting “Not what I said, I did not leak” (translated from Chinese). Also, that user has now deleted his post leaving us to believe Digital Chat Station’s tip as it is legit since the information comes directly from Mi Community.

Further, as per reports by Chinese media, the MIUI 12 release will coincide with the launch of Redmi Note 9 series in China. The Redmi Note 9 is expected to have a 5G version powered by MediaTek Dimensity 800 SoC with an integrated 5G modem, which also happens to power the newly announced Oppo A92S.

Huawei Founder: I’m just a puppet leader, not a spiritual one

Ren Zhengfei, the Founder and CEO of Huawei Technologies, recently stated a few interesting points regarding his position in the company in an interview with South China Morning Post. He said that he is not a spiritual leader of Huawei, but rather a puppet leader.

Zhengfei Ren, Huawei founder and CEO
Zhengfei Ren, Huawei founder and CEO

According to the senior executive, he hopes to be forgotten over time and his biggest wish “is to drink coffee in a cafe unnoticed.” Ren Zhengfei went on to say that “I’m just an old man. What’s the point of remembering me? People should think more about the future and the world.” This is easier said than done considering his position in the Chinese tech giant, which is also currently in the epicenter of the US and China trade wars.

In recent times, Huawei has been facing numerous complications and hindrances by the US government. This led to Ren to finally stepping out from his management position behind the stages and take the reigns of the company again after years. Back in 2019, the company faced a trade ban in the US, causing it to be blacklisted from buying or selling goods to US based companies. Earlier this year, the US tried to further hamper Huawei’s situation by limiting its chip supply through TSMC, the largest contract chip manufacturer.

Huawei

Despite certain long time employees calling Ren “the definite leader, the spiritual leader in Huawei,” he considers himself to be just a puppet to the Rotating Chairmen. In Huawei’s top brass, there are three Rotating Chairman that cycle between one another to lead the company. The constant cycling is done to prevent ideas and creativity to lower under single management and apparently Ren abides by them as well.

The NEY-AN00 has 8 GB of RAM and it runs on Android 10 OS. In the Geekbench 5’s single-core and multi-core tests, it scored 753 and 2899 points, respectively.

Huawei HNB-AN10 – Could it be Huawei Nova 7 5G?

Xiaomi Mi 10 Youth Edition might Launch in China soon

Xiaomi launched the Mi 10 series of flagship smartphones consisting of Mi 10 5G and Mi 10 Pro 5G in mid-February in China. The handsets then made their way to the European market in late March with a new member called Mi 10 Lite 5G. Now, it seems this device will also launch in the company’s home country as the Mi 10 Youth Edition.

According to IT Home, the Mi Community in China has opened a new discussion thread for ‘Mi 10 Youth Edition’. This clearly indicates the newest version of Mi 10 to soon debut in China. When it does, it will be the second Snapdragon 765-powered smartphone from the house of Xiaomi, the first one being Redmi K30 5G, which just recently received a price cut.

The Mi 10 Lite or Youth Edition (China) comes equipped with a 6.57-inches FHD+ AMOLED panel with an in-display fingerprint sensor. On the back, the phone features a quad-camera setup in a matrix array at the top left corner. The new Xiaomi device weighs 192 grams and measures 7.98mm in thickness with a 4,160 mAh battery powering it. The phone runs MIUI 11 based on Android 10 and is available in three colour options namely Blue, Black, and White respectively. The handset comes in two storage configurations – 6GB + 128GB and 8GB + 128GB and starts at €349.

Anyway, the Mi 10 Youth Edition may cost lesser in China and may even have a different storage configuration to further lower the price just like what OnePlus did with the OnePlus 8 series price in India.

OnePlus 8 series’ pricing revealed for India; starts at INR 41,999 (~$549)

OnePlus announced the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro last week globally and in its home country of China a few days later. However, it failed to reveal the pricing details for India at the global launch event. The prices for the two phones were finally released today at 8 PM IST.

OnePlus 8 Indian price

The OnePlus 8 will be available in three variants in India, unlike other countries where it is available in two variants. Below are the variants and their respective prices:

  • 6GB + 128GB (Glacial Green only) = INR 41,999 (~$549)
  • 8GB + 128GB (Glacial Green and Onyx Black) = INR 44,999 (~$588)
  • 12GB + 256GB (Glacial Green, Interstellar Black, Onyx Black) = INR 49,999 (~$653)

OnePlus 8 Pro Indian price

The OnePlus 8 Pro, on the other hand, will come in two variants:

  • 8GB + 128GB (Glacial Green and Onyx Black) = INR 54,999 (~$718)
  • 12GB + 256GB (Glacial Green, Onyx Black, and Ultramarine Blue) = INR 59,999 (~$784)

OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z price India

OnePlus has also revealed the price of the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z earphones. The Bluetooth earphones will sell for INR 1,999 (~$26) At this price and with the features it offers, this should sell like hot cakes.

The OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are definitely cheaper than the price in the US. Take for example the 12GB version of the OnePlus 8 Pro which is more than $200 cheaper than the selling price ($999) in the US.

The OnePlus 8 series sold in India is definitely manufactured in India which means it should be cheaper than in countries where it is imported. However, phone manufacturers in India have been forced to increase prices recently based on the increase in GST tax on mobile phones. Nevertheless, OnePlus has been able to price its new flagships quite well.

OnePlus says the phones will be available for purchase next month but didn’t specify a date.

Now that the prices have been announced, will you be purchasing the OnePlus 8 or OnePlus 8 Pro? Let us know in the comment box.

The Honor 10X Pro might look like this

It has been almost a year since the launch of the Honor 9X series in China. A few days ago, Honor revealed it has sold over 10 million units of the device in China. While Honor has not said anything about a successor yet, a render of a phone alleged to be that of the Honor 10X Pro has surfaced on the web.

The alleged Honor 10X Pro has a punch-hole at the top left corner for a selfie camera and has a pretty slim lower bezel.

Honor 10X Pro

On the back, the phone has a slim rectangular camera housing that contains three rear cameras and an LED flash. A text written beside the sensors reads “64MP AI Triple Camera”.

The phone is reported to have a Kirin 820 processor, which is what we expect will power the successor to the Kirin 810-powered Honor 9X Pro. The source also mentions the display is an OLED panel supplied by China’s BOE Display, and that the phone supports 20W fast charge. We hope the latter is true because the Honor 9X series disappointingly only supports 10W charging.

Like we mentioned above, this is an alleged render of the Honor 10X Pro, so take it with a grain of salt. While a successor to the Honor 9X series should already be in development, we have heard no official reports yet.

Design

Glass backs, aluminum frames, a punch-hole display, and a premium design: that is what you get with Xiaomi Mi 10, Huawei P40 and Realme X50 Pro. Huawei P40 has a more compact size and it is the only to offer dust and splash protection with its IP53 certification. But in my opinion, Xiaomi Mi 10 is the most beautiful with its curved edge-to-edge display, a single punch hole in the screen and a smaller camera module on the back, as well as a higher screen-to-body ratio. Do you prefer having the best look or a compact phone with a higher build quality?

Display

On the display side, it is a very close fight between Realme X50 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 10. In each case, you get a Full HD+ Super AMOLED display supporting a high 90 Hz refresh rate and the HDR10+ standard. Two great devices for gaming and multimedia, especially if you consider that they both come with stereo speakers. Unfortunately, they do not have the best displays you can currently get on a phone, but they still offer amazing panels. The Huawei P40 has a smaller and inferior display: it is an average AMOLED panel with a standard refresh rate.

Hardware/Software

Thanks to the presence of a Snapdragon 865 chipset paired with up to 12 GB of RAM, Realme X50 Pro 5G and Xiaomi Mi 10 are actually able to provide higher performance. The chipset is simply more powerful than the Kirin 990 found on the Huawei P40. Further, there is more RAM since Huawei P40 only comes with 6 or 8 GB of RAM. On the other hand, you can expand the internal storage of the Huawei P40, while Realme X50 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 10 do not have an expansion slot. The operating system installed is Android 10 customized by proprietary user interfaces.

Camera

The most impressive rear camera department is the one found on the Huawei P40. It includes a 50 MP main sensor with RYYB filter, a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, a 16 MP ultrawide lens and dual OIS. But Xiaomi Mi 10 is still a pretty nice camera phone: it lacks a telephoto sensor, but it has an amazing 108 MP main lens that can record 8K videos. Realme X50 Pro wins the front camera comparison since it sports a dual setup including an 8 MP ultrawide sensor. But despite including a telephoto lens, the photo quality provided by the rear cameras can not compete with the Xiaomi Mi 10 and the Huawei P40.

Battery

Xiaomi Mi 10 is the king of battery life with a huge 4780 mAh battery (even bigger than Mi 10 Pro). It is also the only phone from this trio to support wireless charging (with one of the fastest wireless charging technology due to a 30W power) and reverse wireless charging. On the other hand, Realme X50 Pro supports the fastest wired charging technology with a 65W power.

Price

Realme X50 Pro went global with a €599/$651 starting price, Xiaomi Mi 10 starts from €899/$978, and Huawei P40 costs €799/$869 in its base variant. While Realme X50 Pro offers the highest value for money, Xiaomi Mi 10 has the most advanced specs sheet. But if you need the best camera phone, then Huawei P40 is the guy.

Huawei Nova 7 Series hands-on images leak; reveal specs and design

The Nova 7 series from Huawei launched next week, four months after the Nova 6 series was announced. The series will include the Nova 7 SE, the Nova 7, and the Nova 7 Pro. Ahead of the launch, live photos of the three phones have leaked on the web, they not only give us a look at the devices but also reveal their specifications.

Nova 7 SE 5G

The Nova 7 SE is shown to have a punch-hole display. The hole is at the top left corner and it’s not the smallest we have seen on a phone. Unfortunately, none of the images show the rear of the phone.

The image that shows the About Phone section of the device reveals the phone has a 6.5-inch LCD display with a 2400 x 1080 resolution. There is a Kirin 820 5G processor inside the device and it draws power from a 4000mAh battery. The image also confirms the phone has support for 40W wired fast charging.

The Nova 7 SE has a 16MP f/2.0 front-facing camera and one of the rear cameras is a 2MP f/2.4 sensor. The Nova 7 SE will run EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10 out of the box. Its dimensions are 162.31 x 75.0 x 8.58 millimeters and its weight is 189 grams.

Nova 7 5G

The Nova 7 has a punch-hole display too but the hole appears to be smaller in size. The display also appears to be wider than that of the Nova 7 SE. The image of the rear shows the phone has four cameras arranged vertically and housed in a rectangle along with an LED flash.

The Nova 7 5G will have a 6.53-inch OLED display with a 2400 x 1080 resolution. It will be powered by the new Kirin 985 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage.

The quad-camera setup on the back includes a 64MP f/1.8 primary sensor, an 8MP f/2.4 ultrawide angle camera, an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto camera, and a 2MP macro camera. The Nova 7 5G also gets a 32MP f/2.0 selfie camera.

Just like the Nova 7 SE, it too comes with a 4000mAh battery capacity with support for 40W fast wired charging and runs EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10. The Nova 7 5G will be available in five colors including red, green, purple, and black. The phone weighs 180 grams and measures 160.64 x 74.33 x 7.96 millimeters.

Nova 7 Pro 5G

The Nova 7 Pro 5G is the leader of the pack and it comes with a more premium design and features. Its 6.57-inch 2340 x 1080 OLED display is curved at the sides and has a large pill-shaped hole for dual selfie cameras. It also has four cameras and one of them has a periscope lens.

The device will be powered by the same Kirin 985 chipset the standard version uses. It will also come with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage.

The quad-camera setup on its rear is similar to that of the Nova 7, however, rather than an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto camera, it has an 8MP periscope lens with an f/3.4 aperture and optical image stabilization. The primary selfie camera is a 32MP f/2.2 AF sensor and it is paired with an 8MP f/2.2 FF ultrawide angle camera.

The Nova 7 Pro 5G has a 4000mAh battery capacity, supports 40W fast charge, and runs Android 10. It measures 160.36 x 73.74 x 7.98 millimeters and weighs 178 grams. It will come in five colorways too.

Huawei has announced that the Nova 7 series will be launched on April 23 in China.

[Update: May 4] Flipkart will commence sales of products including smartphones from April 20

Update

On April 19, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) reverted its original decision. E-commerce companies are once again allowed to supply only essential goods. Non-essential goods will remain prohibited until May 3, the end of extended lockdown. They might be able to start their operations as usual from May 4 if everything goes fine.

Original Story

India has been under lockdown for almost a month to avoid the spread of coronavirus. The precautionary lockdown was initially set for 21 days, however, the rise of COVID-19 cases led the central government to further extend it till May 3.

But to keep up the economy running, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced a relaxation of businesses to start operating by abiding necessary rules from April 20. Following which, Flipkart, one of the largest e-commerce platforms in the country has confirmed to slowly begin its all services.

Flipkart Logo

Flipkart, together with Amazon and other players have been operating in India even during the lockdown. But these companies are only limited to sell essential products. Thankfully, that will change with the new relaxation issued by the government as they can now start selling non-essential goods as well.

As of now, only Flipkart has confirmed to begin their operations. It has already started accepting orders for smartphones, which is one of the most selling categories of products on this platform. For the unaware, Flipkart is the largest home for exclusive smartphones in India.

Smartphone brands have been long trying to sell their devices since late last month by appealing the government to declare ‘smartphones as essential commodity’. However, that did not happen but once the MHA announced relaxation, they began their negotiations with their strategic online partners.

Coming back to Flipkart, it assures to follow the proper guidelines like maintaining social distancing by employing contactless deliveries through a sanitized supply chain. Also, it will offer services to only those areas where it is safe. Users can check if their area is eligible by entering the pin code.

We also expect all other players to begin their operations if it all goes well. Amazon, the primary rival of Flipkart in India is yet to confirm its decision.

OnePlus 8 Pro Teardown video shows neatly arranged internals

Soon after the launch of the OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8, Zack Nelson of JeerRigEverything fame released a video of the durability test of the high-end OnePlus 8 Pro. In his usual pattern, the OP8 Pro teardown video has now gone live. Turns out the OnePlus 8 Pro is not only sleek on the outside but also features a beautifully designed internal structure.OnePlus 8 Pro

The teardown video takes us through what it entails to pry into the internals of the OnePlus flagship. If there is a need to repair the device, it won’t be an easy task taking off the rear panel. That is because the panel is held in place with stronger adhesive and this is likely due to the IP68 waterproof and dustproof rating.

Zack describes the OP8 Pro as having among the best looking ‘guts’ he’s seen lately and we agree with him. The internal components are quite neatly arranged including the copper wireless charging coil. The phone would have been amazing with a transparent glass back due to the neat internals. More prominent is the copper wireless charging coil which adopts a large circular winding to manage the 30W wireless charging capacity. The loudspeaker was also observed to have got sound dampening balls to enhance the audio output.

In addition, the teardown also unmasks the presence of optical image stabilization (OIS) on the main 48-megapixel sensor and the 8-megapixel depth sensor. Once the back panel has been pry opened, other components can be detached easily. For instance, the battery is removed without much effort which makes for easy repairs. The optical fingerprint sensor was also shown in the teardown which you can check out from below.
