We believe they are absolutely among the best choice in their price ranges, and we decided to compare them in order to highlight their strong and weak points.

Design

The most premium design is offered by the Poco X2, which comes with both a glass back and an aluminum frame. And the glass parts of the phone are protected by Gorilla Glass 5. Both Realme 6 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max are equipped with a glass back and a plastic frame. If we only consider the front panel, Redmi Note 9 Pro Max looks more elegant since it has a single punch-hole on the display, while Realme 6 Pro has a more minimalistic back thanks to a less invasive camera module. Each of these phones is splash resistant and comes with a side-mounted fingerprint reader. These are my opinions and the main info about the designs. Do you prefer a better look or a better build quality?

Display

If you need the most satisfying display, you should go for the Poco X2 for a simple reason: it has a higher refresh rate. Its display goes up to 120 Hz and it even supports the HDR10 standard, unlike Realme 6 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max. At the second place of the ranking, we got the Realme 6 Pro with a 90 Hz refresh rate and a 120 Hz touch sampling rate. Redmi Note 9 Pro Max has a standard refresh rate, so nothing special. The rest of the specs of these displays are similar, including display sizes and resolution that are exactly the same for each device.

Specs & Software

On the hardware side, Poco X2 wins again. It is fueled by a more powerful processor, despite it is an older chipset. We are talking about the Snapdragon 730G, an octa-core chipset with high graphics performance running at a 2.2 GHz max frequency. And the most expensive configuration of the Poco X2 has more internal storage: up to 256 GB. Realme 6 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max are powered by an inferior Snapdragon 720G, but still great in terms of performance and gaming. The memory configurations of Realme 6 Pro and Redmi Noe 9 Pro Max are exactly the same and Android 10 is installed out of the box.

Camera

On the paper, Realme 6 Pro has a better camera setup than Redmi Note 9 Pro Max and Poco X2. Unlike its rivals, it includes a 12 MP telephoto lens with a 2x optical zoom. Further, it has an amazing ultrawide front camera with dual 16 + 8 MP sensors. We are not saying Realme 6 Pro is a high-end camera phone, but it looks superior to is opponents. After testing it, we will be able to give you our definitive opinion about its photo quality.

Battery

The battery award goes to Redmi Note 9 Pro equipped with a 5020 mAh battery. We believe it will last a lot more on a single charge in many scenarios. And it even comes with a faster charging technology; however, it will not charge faster until 100 percent since Realme 6 Pro has a smaller battery.

Price

Redmi Note 9 Pro Max prices begin at INR 14,999 / €180 / $202, Realme 6 Pro is available starting from INR 16,999 / $232 / €220, and Poco X2 starts from INR 16,999 as well. Poco X2 wins the comparison when it comes to build quality and performance. Redmi Note 9 Pro Max wins the battery comparison only, so we do not recommend it as the first choice for Indian buyers unless you want to save some money. Realme 6 Pro wins when it comes to camera specs.

Realme is on a roll this year. After announcing the Realme C3 as the first phone in the world with an Helio G70 processor. It followed it with the Realme 6 Pro which is the world’s first phone powered by the Snapdragon 720G processor. Realme is now set to announce the Realme 6i which will be the first phone powered by MediaTek’s Helio G80 chipset.

The Realme 6i first appeared in the news back in the second week of January 2020 when it was certified by Singapore’s IMDA. More than a month later, it was spotted on the FCC’s database which gave us our very first look at the phone. The images revealed the phone will have four rear cameras, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and what appears to be a notch in the display.

Realme 6i

Now, a poster has revealed that the chipset inside the phone is the Helio G80. This processor was announced early last month and it should sit in between the Helio G70 inside the Realme C3 and the Helio G90T inside the Realme 6.

We already know the Helio G70 is a better processor than the Snapdragon 665 thanks to this comparison video made by MediaTek. However, the Helio G80 will not be a better chipset overall than the Helio G70 and this is because it has fewer performance cores. Below is the CPU configuration of the two chipsets:

  • Helio G80 = 2x Cortex-A75 at 2.0GHz + 6x Cortex-A55 at 1.8GHz
  • Helio G70 = 4x Cortex-A75 at 2.0GHz + 4x Cortex-A55 at 1.7GHz

As we have seen in the case of the Snapdragon 720G versus Snapdragon 730G, just because a processor has a higher model number does not mean it will offer better performance. The Helio G70 has the upper hand because it has more performance cores which means it will score higher on benchmarks.

However, the Helio G80 does win in one area and that is the GPU. It has the same GPU as the Helio G70 which is the Mali-G52 but it is clocked higher at 950MHz as against the G70’s 820MHz. Other than these two differences, the rest of the specs of the two chipsets are the same.

The Realme 6i will come with a 5000mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging via a USB Type-C port. A Geekbench listing that surfaced today revealed the phone will run Android 10 out of the box and have 4GB of RAM.

There is no info yet regarding the launch of the Realme 6i but it should be soon.

Huawei filed the most patents at the European Patent Office in 2019

The European Patent Office (EPO) has released a patent ranking for 2019. The data released show that the officed received a total of over 181,000 patent applications in 2019. The figure represented an increase of 4% over 2018. Among them, Chinese patent applications increased by 29.2% to 12,247, ranking fourth. The United States, Germany, and Japan make up the top three.Huawei

In terms of individual brands, Huawei ranked first among all brands with a total of 3524 patent applications. Samsung and LG ranked second and third with 2,858 and 2817 patents respectively.

In January this year, the State Intellectual Property Office released data saying that in 2019, the number of Chinese invention patent applications was 14.01 million. Out of that massive figure, only 453,000 invention patents were approved. The data also showed that the number of invention patents granted in China in 2019 increased by 4.8% year-on-year, and the number of registered trademarks increased by 27.9% year-on-year.

Also in 2019, the top three domestic companies (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) in terms of patent approvals were: Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (4510 patents), China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (2883 patents), OPPO Guangdong Mobile Communications Co., Ltd. (2614 patents).

Huawei’s rise to the top is hinged on the company’s huge investment in R&D which is reflected in the number of patent applications. The company was reported to have spent $15.3 billion on R&D in 2018. That may have increased by last year but we can’t say if the Chinese giant will whittle down its investments this year in the face of political pressure from the US and the raging Coronavirus epidemic that

Nubia Red Magic 5G scores over 640,000 points in AnTuTu, Calls out Refrigerator tests as Unfair

Generally, during a smartphone launch conference, especially the premium flagships, the OEM will try and boast of the smartphone’s capabilities. This works especially well with mobile benchmarking platforms. Now, the Nubia Red Magic 5G has just been announced and score over 640,000 points in AnTuTu testing.

According to Nubia, the Red Magic 5G scored within the brackets of 620,000 to 640,000 in the tests in AnTuTu benchmarking software. It achieved such a high score through the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC that powers the device. The chipset is the latest in line from the chipmaking giant’s flagship entries and offers top notch performance.

Nubia Red Magic 5G Transparent Edition
Nubia Red Magic 5G Transparent Edition

As of right now, the smartphone’s featuring the Snapdragon 865 SoC have generally scored around or a bit higher than the 600,000 mark. So, Nubia Red Magic 5G holds the bragging rights in regards to being one of the highest scoring device ever on AnTuTu. Nubia stated that the high score is in part due to powerful hardware but mostly thanks to its software optimizations and fine tuning.

Notably, the company stated that its exclusive technology Magic Write, which allows for faster read and write speeds, is also transparent to developers. In other words, software developers and other third party developers do not need to modify their applications. Thus, providing the Nubia Red Magic 5G with such an impressive score.

Another positive aspect that goes along with the performance of the smartphone is the new heat dissipation system in place. Nubia claims this technology is the industry’s best with ICE 3.0 three dimensional heat dissipation system. In simpler terms, the technology utilizes air cooling, liquid cooling and thermally conductive materials like gels, graphite, copper foil, and other materials as well.

Nubia Red Magic 5G’s AnTuTu scores

In the launch event, Nubia even called out the industry practice of portraying synthetic benchmark tests using refrigerators. For those unaware, testing platforms like AnTuTu draw a lot of power from the processor leading to an increase in temperatures within the device. In longer tests, this leads to thermal throttling that reduces performance and scores. Thus, various OEMs put their smartphones in fridges to demonstrate the full potential. However, Nubia Red Magic 5G didn’t require any such external cooling method and calls the industry’s practice as cheating or unfair.

OPPO may soon commercially launch the 30W Wireless VOOC charging

Oppo is planning on commercially launching its 30W VOOC wireless fast charging technology soon. The company has been working on this for a while now and we may see premium smartphones feature this technology in the near future.

Oppo had initially teased the technology back in 2019 but hadn’t released any smartphone featuring the 30W VOOC wireless charging. The company claimed that many real time adjustments had to be made to make the wireless charging efficient and safe. Various measures were taken to ensure the avoidance of overheating while sensory functions had to also be implemented, so the wireless charger stopped immediately if a foreign metallic object is detected.

Image from the conference where Oppo revealed the 30W wireless VOOC Flash Charge technology

Through al this hurdle, it was expected that the Oppo Find X2 series might sport the technology, but alas, that was not the case either. However, Edward Tian, the Charging Engineer at OPPO, has revealed that the wireless VOOC charger is now technically ready for a commercial launch. Furthermore, he even stated that it can also be paired alongside the existing 65W SuperVOOC wires charging technology as well, which can be found in the Find X2 series.

So, it is unknown why the company opted to skip out on the feature for the Find X2, but cost cutting could be a reason. Although, even if Oppo hasn’t included the technology in any of its own smartphones, the OnePlus 8 series might just sport the technology. Oppo and OnePlus are both owned by a company called BBK Electronics, and regularly share technology like the Dash/Warp fast charging.

OPPO 30W wireless VOOC Flash Charge

OnePlus has yet to launch a smartphone with wireless charging, so this year could mark the shift towards it. Previously, senior executives had stated that the technology was skipped in the last few generations due to it still being in its nascent stages. However, wireless charging has improved immensely ever since, and OnePlus might just include it in its upcoming flagship series. Although this is just speculation, so take it with a grain of salt.

[Updated: New Winner] Chip Battle: Snapdragon 730G vs Snapdragon 720G

Update: Added the new Redmi Note 9 series to the post as well as new details of the Snapdragon 720G (benchmark results) that actually change the conclusion.

Mobile games have become demanding when it comes to CPU and GPU requirements. Games such as PUBG, Call of Duty Mobile, and Fortnite all require much more compared to games such as Candy Crush. Chipmakers seeing this need for extra processing power have made specially-designed chipsets to handle these games.

For Qualcomm, its gaming chipsets have a “G” at the end of their names which denotes the chipset has select Snapdragon Elite Gaming features and graphical boost compared to the standard processors. Two of its chipsets that fall into this category are the Snapdragon 730G announced in April 2019 and the more recent Snapdragon 720G.

The Snapdragon 730G powers quite a number of phones already such as the Samsung Galaxy A80 and the POCO X2. The Snapdragon 720G, on the other hand, is the chipset inside the Realme 6 Pro, the Redmi Note 9 Pro, and the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max (yes, that is a mouthful). So how do these two chipsets compare to one another? Let’s find out below.

Snapdragon 730G versus Snapdragon 720G

Location GPS, Glonass, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, and SBAS GPS, Glonass, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, SBAS, and NavIC support
Quick Charge  4+ 4.0

The above is a table comparing the key specs of the two processors. However, there is more to it.

CPU: Both chipsets are built on the same node and feature the same processor cores. The Snapdragon 720G has a higher clockspeed but from the name of its performance core, it should not be as powerful as the Kryo 470 in the Snapdragon 730G, right? Wrong. An AnTuTu benchmark result shows the Snapdragon 720G is actually better in terms of performance than the Snapdragon 730G.

In the image above, the Snapdragon 720G scores a total of 103012 points compared to the Snapdragon 730G’s 96,779 points with respect to CPU performance. For Geekbench, the Snapdragon 720G scores higher in the single-core performance but scores just a tiny bit lower than the Snapdragon 730G in multi-core performance.

Snapdragon 720G vs Snapdragon 730G Geekbench

GPU: The two processors have the same GPU but the Snapdragon 730G should be better because Qualcomm says it has a 15% boost compared to the Snapdragon 730’s own GPU which is also the Adreno 618. Wrong again. While Qualcomm has refused to mention the clock speed of the GPU in all three SoCs, the AnTuTu benchmark result above shows that the Snapdragon 720G’s GPU actually scores slightly higher than that of the Snapdragon 730G. Does this mean it is clocked higher? That is very likely.

DSP: The DSP for the Snapdragon 720G is higher and it comes with the new Qualcomm Sensing Hub that is present in the Snapdragon 865. This is an improvement over the Always-Aware Hub of the Snapdragon 730G.

The Snapdragon 730G supports displays with a maximum resolution of QHD+ compared to the Snapdragon 720G that maxes out at FHD+. However, that is not a big deal as a phone with a QHD+ screen will surely not have a Snapdragon 700 series processor.

Also, the Snapdragon 730G also supports 4K HDR10, unlike the Snapdragon 720G that supports just HDR10.

Others: The Snapdragon 720G wins in other areas too. It has Bluetooth 5.1, unlike the Snapdragon 730G that has Bluetooth 5.0. It also has NavIC support which is India’s own satellite location system. Slightly surprising is that it only supports Quick Charge 4.0 while the Snapdragon 730G supports Quick Charge 4+.

Conclusion

The Snapdragon 720G is definitely the more powerful chipset with its better CPU and GPU. However, the Snapdragon 730G is close on its heels. In everyday usage, most people will not notice the difference between the two processors.

When it comes to choosing a phone powered by either of these chipsets, what will actually determine what you buy will be other parameters such as price, cameras, software support, battery capacity, and even design. However, performance will not be a huge difference.

Redmi Note 9 series could be skipped in China

The Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max models have gone official in India. The Note 9 series phones with some exciting features like big-sized displays, large-sized batteries, 64-megapixel quad cameras and more. While the Redmi Note 9 Pro duo went official in India as 4G phones, there have been speculations that the Redmi Note 9 series for China will include 5G-ready handsets. However, a fresh Weibo post from Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing suggests that the company may skip the Redmi Note 9 series in China.

Weibing has claimed that the company is currently focused on bringing 5G products in China. While the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Note 9 Pro Max are feature-rich budget-friendly phones with 4G support, they are only aimed towards overseas market. In other words, these phones are not planned for the Chinese markets.

Redmi is currently focused on the launch of the upcoming Redmi K30 Pro 5G phone. The exact launch date of the phone is currently under the wraps. However, it is expected to go official by the end of this month.

Redmi’s focus on 5G products for the home market suggests that the company may want to launch the Note series phones with 5G support. Hence, it appears that the Redmi Note 9 series will be skipped and there could be plans to launch Redmi Note 10 series 5G support. The Note 10 lineup will be arriving as the 10th anniversary Redmi phones from the company.

Weibing has also said in another Weibo post that the company will be not only announcing the Redmi K30 Pro at the upcoming launch conference, but also it will debut something else. Last year, the Chinese firm had launched RedmiBook 14 at the Redmi K20 Pro. It remains to be seen whether the company announces new Redmi laptops or some other devices at the K30 Pro unveil event.
