OPPO Find X2 will have a waterfall display, 65W wired charging and more

The OPPO Find X2’s launch has been rescheduled to the 6th of March 2020. The flagship phone is the successor to 2018’s Find X and OPPO is packing it full with features. Ahead of the launch, details about the display and the charging have surfaced.

OPPO’s VP, Shen Yiren (Brian Shen), revealed that the Find X2 has a flexible OLED panel with specifications that meet the “waterfall display” tag. However, they decided to not let the curves be as pronounced as that of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro and Vivo NEX 3. That way, they can keep the hardware buttons on the side.

The display has a hole at the top left corner. It has a QHD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 240Hz touch sampling rate. There is also a video chip that upscales SDR to HDR.

The Chinese leaker that goes by Digital Chat Station on Weibo has also shared details about the phone’s charging technology. According to a Weibo post from earlier today, the Find X2 has support for 65W wired flash charge, 30W wireless flash charge, and 10W reverse charging.

OPPO Find X2 fast charging

The Find X2’s charging technology trumps that of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro which has 50W wired fast charging, 30W wireless fast charging, and 5W reverse charging.

The Find X2 will also have a Pro model with better cameras but both will have a Snapdragon 865 processor and have support for 5G. OPPO should also announce its first smartwatch at the event.

The update for the Mi 10 series included a new driver for the smartphone’s GPU (graphics processing unit). This is made possible by Qualcomm’s latest flagship, the Snapdragon 865 SoC, which enables GPU drivers to be updated, allowing for optimizations and improvements being patched periodically. The update also brought along plenty of other notable improvements, such as:

Update: Since this report, the Mi 10 Pro has also undergone multiple other test runs on the AnTuTu benchmarking software. Oppo’s First Smartwatch may feature a 3D Curved Display

In recent years, the IoT (internet of things) and wearables market have grown exponentially. A lot of such devices have become household staples, that have interestingly led to various smartphone brands to branch out and develop such gadgets as well. One of these companies that are looking to diversify is Oppo and its first smartwatch is expected to arrive with a 3D curved display panel.

Due to the MWC 2020 in Barcelona got canceled due to the recent Coronavirus outbreak, many OEMs suddenly lacked a stage where they were going to hold a major press conference. Oppo was one of them and it was rumored that the company will reveal its first smartwatch during the major event. However, the abrupt cancelation has seemed to delay the timeline for its announcement but a leak has given a unique insight on the gadget.

Oppo
Upcoming Oppo Smartwatch is rumored to feature a 3D Curved display similar to the hyperboloid screen found in the Find X2 (Image via Slashleaks)

According to an image shared by Slashleaks (a known website featuring many leaked and rumored products), a picture of a small glass panel can be observed. The leak claims it is the screen for the upcoming Oppo smartwatch. Notably, its noticeably striking features are its 3D curved glass panel which resembles the expensive hyperboloid screen that was also featured on the Find X. For those unaware, it is a rather difficult and costly form of display to mass produce.

Previously, we had reported on renders of the Oppo smartwatch which had surfaced online. Unfortunately, the renders do not divulge finer details, but also feature a square display similar to the glass panel in the recent leak. Meaning, it is quite possible that the renders and leaks might be the design that will be later seen on the Oppo smartwatch.

Samsung shuts production facility in South Korea till February 25 following Coronavirus outbreak

Samsung Electronics temporarily shut down smartphone production at its manufacturing unit in Gumi, South Korea following a positive coronavirus infection. Production stopped over the weekend but is scheduled to resume from Feb. 25 if the infection is contained. Samsung manufactures the latest Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy Z Flip at the Gumi unit. Any delay in production could lead to a massive global supply crunch after launch.

South Korea has witnessed a massive coronavirus outbreak recently, with Daegu city at the heart of it. Gumi is barely 40 km from Daegu and runs a high risk of infection. According to Samsung’s official statement, a member of its Gumi workforce was diagnosed with COVID-19 on February 22. Samsung’s Emergency Response Task Force immediately closed operations, urging employees to practice self-quarantine at home.

While Samsung manufactures a bunch of devices in Vietnam and China, top-of-the-line handsets like the Galaxy Fold are manufactured at its production line in Gumi. Following the detection, a local news portal confirmed that every person to have come in contact with the infected employee have been quarantined. While Samsung advises the rest of its workforce to practice cautionary measures like wearing masks and avoiding direct or passive contact with co-workers.

Samsung further advised employees to avoid public transportation and conduct business meetings via video conference. Inter-facility operations between Gumi and Samsung’s headquarters in Suwon has also been temporarily suspended. The spread of COVID-19 could further jeopardize the already weak South Korean economy, as major businesses could shut shop fearing another Wuhan-like catastrophe.

Samsung’s manufacturing unit in Gumi is located within the Gumi Industrial Complex in Imsu-dong. The facility primarily houses the smartphone Research and Development wing and production line. Although Samsung’s budget smartphone lineup will not be affected by the closure, any prolonged delay could affect Samsung’s flagship distribution chain. An official, however, claimed that the weekend closure is not expected to severely hamper the company’s production plans.

Samsung Electronics’ share prices plummeted by 3.7 percent in Seoul on Feb. 22 with the news going public. The timing could not have been any worse as the Won is already at its six-month low, with stock prices heading down the drain with Seoul putting out an infectious disease alert to the highest level with the worsening outbreak. South Korea’s Center for Disease Control recently noted 161 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the country’s total tally up to 763. The death toll rose from 2 to 7 people with Daegu city recording the maximum casualties.

A coronavirus outbreak in Gumi could spell doom for Samsung Electronics, along with a handful of other major tech giants operating from the area, including Toray Group, LG Electronics, LG Display, and a few other businesses. Samsung currently has 2 manufacturing units at Gumi, located 200 km from the national capital.

LG Electronics has advised workers at the Gumi facility traveling from Daegu city to work from home. Workers who have visited Daegu in the recent past have been instructed to stay away from the office for the next two weeks. While headquarter staff need prior permission from the management to visit Daegu city. According to an LG spokesperson, the company’s research center at Incheon was closed down after a worker’s family member was diagnosed with COVID-19.

Previously leaked renders of the upcoming smartphone suggest that the Vivo APEX 2020 will continue to have bezel-less design and apparently a super-high screen-to-body ratio. The device will utilise the in-display fingerprint sensor and would have a curved-edge display design.

It is also said that while APEX 2018 and APEX 2019 utilised a pop-up camera design, this year’s model will likely ditch that and may have an under-screen selfie camera. On the back side, there’s a circular Oreo-shaped main camera module with a rectangular optical zoom lens. The upcoming device will also come with 5G connectivity and fast charging technology support.

Sony Xperia 1 II and Xperia 10 II renders and specs leaks; has ZEISS lens and audio jack

Last weekend should have been an exciting one for mobile phone lovers if MWC 2020 wasn’t canceled. Manufacturers such as TCL, OPPO, HMD Global, and Xiaomi had originally scheduled their product launches for the weekend but had to reschedule following the announcement that MWC will not hold this year due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Sony, on the other hand, scheduled its own event for today but has switched it to an online event that will be live-streamed on YouTube. Ahead of the launch, specs and renders of two new phones – the Xperia 1 II and the Xperia 10 II – have been posted online.

Xperia 1 II

The Xperia 1 II is a flagship and the successor to the Xperia 1 released last year. The phone has been slightly designed and comes with significant upgrades and features.

Sony is sticking to the 6.5” screen size and 21:9 aspect ratio. There is no notch or punch hole but we still have bezels. The OLED screen has a 4K resolution and Sony has added what it calls Motion Blur Reduction which provides the same benefit as having a 90Hz refresh rate according to the spec sheet.

The rear cameras use ZEISS lens and have features such as Real-time Eye Autofocus and 20fps AF/AE tracking burst. The selfie camera is an 8MP sensor.

The Xperia 1 II has stereo front speakers, Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res Audio, and even has an audio jack, unlike its predecessor. There is a 4000mAh battery inside it with support for wireless charging but there no mention of the charging speed. The phone also has an IP65/IP68 rating which means it is dustproof and waterproof.

The spec sheet also mentions features such as 21:9 gaming support, DualShock 4 direct connection, Elite Gaming, and Game Enhancer.

The Xperia 1 II will be available in black and purple.

Xperia 10 II

Sony’s second phone is the mid-range Xperia 10 II. It doesn’t have 5G support like the flagship phone but it comes with more cameras and bigger battery capacity than its predecessor, the Xperia 10.

The display is a 6.0-inch 21:9 FHD+ OLED panel with Video Image Optimisation. There are bezels at the top and bottom of the screen.

It the blog post, it writes that “sideloaded Google apps will not work reliably because we do not allow these services to run on uncertified devices where security may be compromised. Sideloading Google’s apps also carries a high risk of installing an app that has been altered or tampered with in ways that can compromise user security.”

Meanwhile, Huawei has launched Huawei Mobile Services aka HMS which is being seen as an alternative to GMS in order to reduce its reliance on Google. The company is also planning to invest billions of dollars to boost its app ecosystem.
