AT&T CEO thinks US govt. buying stake in Nokia, Ericsson is a bad idea

Amid growing concerns about Huawei’s global dominance in the field of technology, the US could be looking at potential rivals to counter Huawei’s success in the coming days. While a faction of the US administration is considering the possibility, the idea has not gone down well with many individuals. Especially from people in the private sector who believe the government’s involvement in private American or allied companies does not bode well for the future.

“I do not think it’s a good idea”, revealed Randall Stephenson, CEO at AT&T, when CNBC asked for his opinion on the US Attorney General’s comments on the government investing in Nokia and Ericsson. In his defense, Stephenson said, “Governments generally do not have the greatest reputation when it comes to investing in the private sector”.

Stephenson’s comments came shortly after US Attorney General William Barr suggested that the US should take the initiative to acquire a stake in private sector companies like Nokia and Ericsson to secure 5G equipment for future use. He said instead of simply asking allies to avoid using Huawei’s products, the US government should work on a substitute. Shares of Nokia and Ericsson opened strong post the Attorney General’s comments, with shareholders suggesting the companies accept the offer.

Stephenson, however, agrees with some of the ideas shared by the Attorney General. For example, AT&T has been working closely with Microsoft and Dell along with the White House to develop a software-based alternative to Huawei’s 5G equipment.

Speaking on the subject Stephenson said, “AT&T has been the pioneers of software-based architecture in networking. We are using hardware that would have been considered unconventional half a decade ago. We use generic hardware since it can run any software with ease. We prefer using unconventional ways to avoid a competitive comparison with Huawei, using innovation and software over government mandates to achieve our goals”.

Stephenson further explained the precarious situation the US Government is facing as its 328 million citizens is far outnumbered by China’s population of 1.4 billion. “If Huawei gets a market share of over 90% in China, they control 30% of the global market. If the US does not use Huawei’s equipment in its network, we have to rely on a sub-scale supply chain, which is why we need an innovative solution to the problem”.

AT&T has already made some major investments into developing software-based networks, although it had previously pointed at cost-cutting as the motive behind the move. The company previously vowed to virtualize 75% of existing networks by 2020 using SDN (Software-Defined Networking). It has also made significant investments to include open-RAN (Radio Access Network) in its networks.

[UPDATE: MediaTek out too!] Vivo & Intel withdraw from MWC 2020, Apex 2020 concept launch delayed

UPDATE: MediaTek has also announced its withdrawal from MWC 2020 this year due to the coronavirus epidemic.

Vivo and Intel are joining the likes of TCL, Sony, and LG to withdraw from MWC 2020 which will be held later this month in Barcelona, Spain. Both the companies expressed concerns about the safety of its employees as well as the public as the reason for backing out of one of the world’s biggest tech shows of the year.

Vivo was all set to announce its new Apex 2020 concept smartphone at MWC 2020. The phone was expected to showcase Vivo’s advancements in smartphone technology. So, this withdrawal could be a big setback for the company as well as the event. Some brands like Sony have announced online launch events for their products, but Vivo is yet to confirm if the Apex 2020 concept phone will get a similar treatment

Intel also explained to VentureBeat in a statement that its withdrawal was an act of caution in response to the ongoing coronavirus crisis in China. A lot of other brands like LG, NTT Docomo, NVIDIA, Amazon, and TCL have either backed out of the event completely or have reduced their presence at the event.

The GSM Association, which organizes MWC every year also issued a statement detailing the countermeasures taken to combat the spread of coronavirus. The association said it wouldn’t allow anyone from China’s Hubei province and attendees will have to prove that they were outside of China for 14 days before the event. The organizers have also called for a ‘no handshake’ policy at the event this year.

China’s Q1 2020 Smartphone Sale Likely to Drop by 50% amid Coronavirus Outbreak: Reuters

Smartphone sales in China are expected to drop by as much as an alarming 50 percent in Q1 2020, given that several retail stores have remained closed for a long time. To make matters worse, production hasn’t resumed fully citing the coronavirus crisis, research reports say.

The virus outbreak has claimed more than 1000 lives and disturbed China’s manufacturing industry. Huawei and other popular Chinese smartphone manufacturers were gearing up for the country’s 5G rollout this year in a bid to help the world’s largest smartphone market make a comeback after a long period of declining sales.

Last week in a note, research firm Canalys said, “Vendors’ planned product launches will be canceled or delayed, given that large public events are not allowed in China.” The note points out that vendors will need more time to adjust the roadmaps for their product launch in China, which is likely to put a damper on 5G shipments.

While Canalys predicts China’s smartphone shipments to drop by 50 percent in the first quarter from last year, IDC (International Data Corporation), on the other hand, expects a 30 percent drop. For those unaware, IDC is a research firm that monitors the tech sector.

Last week, Apple Inc announced its plan to extend the suspension of its retail store in China and said it hasn’t decided when they will re-open, since Foxconn, which assembles iPhones, is struggling to fully restart work at its factories. Although Foxconn got a stamp of government’s approval to restart production at a plant located in Zhengzhou, its more important plant in Shenzhen is still closed.

Without providing more details, Huawei, which is touted China’s biggest smartphone vendor, said the manufacturing capacity of the company is “running normally”. Just like the rest of the local companies, Huawei too relies on third-party manufacturers when it comes to production.

According to analysts, factories must resume production to their full capacity without delay, as this could hamper brands’ ability to make their latest products available in the market. Keeping in line with that, China’s popular Android brands including Xiaomi, Huawei, and Oppo are all slated to unveil their flagship devices in Q1 2020.

OPPO Reno 3
OPPO Reno3

Despite the virus affecting operations at a few local factories, Oppo told Reuters that “manufacturing capacity can be guaranteed effectively” as it has plants located overseas as well. Xiaomi; however, refrained from responding to requests for comment.

IDC analyst Will Wong said, “The delays in reopening factories and the labor return time will not only affect shipments to stores, but it will also affect the product launch times in the mid- and long-term.”

On Monday, research firm TrendForce revealed that smartphone production on a global scale will drop by 12 percent in the March quarter, which converts to a five-year love of 275 million units. The research firm readjusted iPhone production by 10 percent to 41 million units, while Huawei’s production forecast was revised down to by 15 percent to 42.5 million units.

The world’s top handset maker, Samsung is likely to be the least affected by the coronavirus outbreak, as its major production plant is based in Vietnam. The report forecasts, Samsung could lower its production by a mere 3 percent to 71.5 million phones.

Realme X50 Pro 5G AnTuTu score will be higher than its pre-production unit, says Realme VP

In January, a Realme phone with model number RMX2071 was spotted at AnTuTu benchmarks with a remarkable score of 574,985. At that time, it was believed that it could be the upcoming Snapdragon 865 mobile platform powered Realme X50 Pro 5G smartphone. Recently, Realme Vice President and President of Global Marketing, Xu Qi had shared a screenshot of the Realme X50 Pro 5G phone that revealed some of its key specs. The screengrab confirmed that the model number of X50 Pro 5G as RMX2071. Xu Qi today confirmed that the previously seen of AnTuTu listing belonged to the pre-production unit of the smartphone. He added the final product will score higher on AnTuTu benchmarks.

The Realme X50 Pro 5G is scheduled to go official at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) tech trade show on Feb. 24. The Chinese brand will be present at the event for the first time. Apart from unveiling the Realme X50 Pro 5G smartphone, the company will be also announcing the Realme TV among other devices.

Coming back to the Realme X50 Pro 5G, it is confirmed that the phone will be arriving with 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.0 storage. The phone could be equipped also coming in lower RAM and storage combinations. The phone will come preloaded with Android 10 OS and the latest Realme UI 1.0.

The exact size of the Realme X50 Pro 5G’s display is not known. The screenshot taken from the phone revealed that it supports full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels and 20:9 aspect ratio.

Realme X50 5G
Realme X50 5G

A recently released teaser image revealed that the display of the phone will have a pill-shaped cutout at the top-left corner for its dual front-facing cameras. The Realme X2 Pro flagship phone from the company supported 120Hz refresh rate. Hence, it is likely that the Realme X50 Pro 5G may also offer the same refresh rate. It is speculated that the phone will arrive with support for 50W fast charging. The other specifications of the Realme X50 Pro 5G are currently under the wraps.

The Realme X50 Pro 5G will be a budget-friendly flagship phone like the Realme X2 Pro. Rival brand Redmi is gearing up to launch the Redmi K30 Pro 5G phone in China. Speculations are rife that it will be made official in the coming month.

New OnePlus Power Bank with fast charging may be coming soon

I have used a fair share of power banks but one power bank that has had a lasting impression is the OnePlus 10000 mAh Power Bank. Released in 2015, the OnePlus Power Bank was quite different from its peers in its design. It was available in Silk White and the same Sandstone Black as the OnePlus One. It also had a nifty little feature that allowed you to check how much charge you had left just by shaking the power bank. Unfortunately, OnePlus stopped making the power bank and never released new models even when fans requested for one. A recent development hints that might be changing soon.

OnePlus Power Bank

Yesterday, OnePlus’ co-founder, Carl Pei (@getpeid), posted a tweet asking people to retweet if they’d like a fast-charging power bank. While I may be too excited, I definitely think this is the first teaser that OnePlus is planning to launch a new power bank and one with fast-charging support.

Power banks have changed over the years in terms of capacity as well as the features they offer. We now have power banks that support wireless charging and power banks that have a power output of up to 50W such as OPPO’s SuperVOOC Power Bank.

We have no idea when OnePlus will announce its new power bank though we won’t be surprised if it were to launch alongside the OnePlus 8 series. Nevertheless, one thing we are pretty sure of is that you should be able to get a day’s power in half an hour from the battery pack.

Are you excited for a new OnePlus Power Bank? Do let us know in the comment box.

Samsung will announce the Galaxy M31 on February 25 in India

Last week, Samsung released two teasers for the upcoming Galaxy M31 mid-range smartphone. One teaser revealed the phone will have a 64MP primary rear camera while another disclosed that it will pack a 6000mAh battery. Now, Samsung has announced a launch date for the phone.

According to an official microsite, the Galaxy M31 will be announced on February 25 in India at 12 noon (IST). The website also includes images of the device as well as some of its specs.

Galaxy M31 launch

The Galaxy M31 will have an Infinity-U sAMOLED FHD+ display. The screen size is 6.4-inches and should be great for watching content and playing games.

The device will also have four rear cameras arranged in a rectangular housing along with an LED flash. Other than the main camera, the configuration of the other sensors are unknown but we are pretty sure it has an ultrawide angle camera, a depth sensor, and a macro camera. The camera housing is on the left side of the device while a few millimeters away is a fingerprint scanner.

Previous reports have revealed the Galaxy M31 will have an Exynos 9611 processor powering it and will come in two configurations – 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and 6GB RAM + 128GB storage. The phone should have support for storage expansion. Geekbench has also revealed it will run Android 10 out of the box. Of course, expect One UI 2.0 on top.

The Galaxy M31 will be available in Blue and Black just like its predecessor, the Galaxy M30. When it launches, it will be sold by Amazon India.

[UPDATE] iQOO 3 moniker officially confirmed and designed teased

UPDATE: It has been found that there is a 48-megapixel primary lens on the backside of the iQOO 3. A Chinese leakster had also claimed in the recent past that it has a 48-megapixel main lens. However, the TENAA listing states it has a 64-megapixel primary shooter. Currently, the TENAA listing of the phone is inaccessible. There is a possibility that there could be an error in the TENAA listing or there could be another variant of the phone with 64-megapixel lens.

Original story continues…

Recently, the upcoming iQOO smartphone that has a model number of V1955A was spotted at the database of China’s TENAA telecom authority. The listing had revealed the entire specifications of the smartphone. Multiple reports have claimed that the next generation iQOO phone will be debuting in the Chinese markets as iQOO 3. Today, the Chinese firm released an official poster of the phone to tease its design. The poster confirms that its next smartphone will be debuting as iQOO 3.

The machine translation of the text present on the poster reads “iQOO 3 5G performance flagship.” The teaser suggests that there is a quad camera system on the rear side of the iQOO 3. There seems to be a 3.5mm audio jack on the top edge of the smartphone. The display design is not clearly visible.

Rumors surrounding the iQOO 3 have claimed that it will be featuring a 6.44-inch S-AMOLED display with top-right corner punch-hole. It could be the same screen that it is available on the Vivo X30 series and some other recently released Vivo phones.

iQOO 3 5G specifications

The iQOO 3 measures 158.51 x 74.88 x 9.16mm and it weighs 214.5 grams. The display of the phone is integrated with a fingerprint sensor. The screen offers a tall aspect ratio of 20:9 and full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. While major smartphone OEMs are gearing up to launch phone’s with higher refresh rate displays, the iQOO 3 may arrive with the 60Hz refresh rate support.

The Snapdragon 865 mobile platform will be driving the iQOO 3 smartphone. It may come in three RAM options like 6 GB, 8 GB and 12 GB in China. Recently, the India variant of the iQOO 3 was spotted on Geekbench benchmarking platform. iQOO has confirmed that its next flagship phone will be arriving with UFS 3.1 storage. The Android 10 OS will arrive preinstalled on the device.

The phone may ship with a 4,410mAh typical capacity battery along with a 55W fast charger. The backside of the device has a 64-megapixel + 13-megapixel + 13-megapixel + 2-megapixel quad camera system. It has a selfie snapper of 16-megapixel.

There is no leak on the pricing of the iQOO 3 5G. Hopefully, the Chinese firm will confirm on its launch date in the next few days. Some reports have claimed that it may debut first in India.

TCL cancels global press event but will still attend MWC

This year’s edition of Mobile World Congress will be one of the most memorable ones for years to come, no thanks to the deadly coronavirus that has caused several manufacturers to pull out of the show or cancel their press events. In the past week, quite a number of manufacturers including Sony, Amazon, NVIDIA, have announced that they will no longer be in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress 2020. It has now been reported that TCL will be canceling its global launch event too.

TCL 10 series
TCL will no longer hold a press event for the launch of the TCL 10 series in Barcelona

XDA-Developers reports that the Chinese manufacturer has released a press statement to inform attendees that it will be canceling its global press event scheduled for February 22 due to the virus outbreak. The company had to make the decision as a cautionary move to protect its staff, customers, and guests.

However, TCL says it will still attend the show and will still announce its new devices, it just will not have a launch event. Attendees will be able to see its latest products at its booth in Hall 3 (Stand D311), probably from behind a glass. This is the same decision ZTE made last week.

The press event was to be for the launch of its TCL 10 series of 5G devices as well as Alcatel products. TCL has also said that it will continue to monitor the situation and share any new updates to its plans.

Moto G Stylus vs Oppo F15 vs Poco X2: Specs Comparison

A few days ago, Motorola launched the Moto G Stylus: the only last-generation smartphone with a stylus if we exclude the Samsung Galaxy Note series. It does not offer the pressure sensitivity and all those amazing features of the S Pen, but it is available at an affordable price since it is a mid-ranger. This is a comparison between the new handset and two of its most interesting rivals: Oppo F15 and Poco X2. Does the new Motorola’s mid-ranger offer a higher value for money than its concurrence? Let’s discover it together.

Design

Xiaomi Poco X2 offers the most premium design if we talk about materials. It is the only to come with both an aluminum frame and a glass back. And all the glasses on the phone are protected by Gorilla Glass 5. Motorola Moto G Stylus has a 6000 series aluminum frame, but its rear side is made of plastic. On the other hand, it is splash resistant. Despite it is an elegant and minimal phone, Oppo F15 has a full plastic design. But the Oppo F15 is slimmer and lighter.

Display

While Oppo F15 does not shine for its materials, it is definitely amazing when it comes to the display. It sports a Full HD+ AMOLED panel with high brightness and an under-display fingerprint reader. Both Motorola Moto G Stylus and Poco X2 have a classic and not trending IPS panel, but the Poco X2 has a very high 120 Hz refresh rate and this will please gamers and people seeking the smoothest user experience. Do you prefer an AMOLED panel with an in-display fingerprint reader or an IPS panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate?

Specs & Software

Poco X2 wins the performance comparison because it sports a much more powerful chipset: the Snapdragon 730G with very high CPU and GPU performance, meant for gamers and power users (but still a midrange chipset). It even has the best memory configuration with up to 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of internal storage which you can furtherly expand through a micro SD slot. Just like the Moto G Stylus, Poco X2 comes with Android 10 out of the box (customized by MIUI), while Oppo F15 is still based on Android Pie. Note that Poco X2 and Oppo F15 both come with UFS 2.1 internal storage, while Moto G Stylus has an eMMC storage.

Camera

Poco X2 has the most complete camera department including a 64 MP quad camera on the rear and a dual front camera with a depth sensor. But Moto G Stylus is still an amazing camera phone, with great autofocus and a very nice video quality. On the paper, Oppo F15 is inferior.

Battery

Thanks to its bigger battery, the Poco X2 will be able to offer a longer battery life on a single charge. And it even has a faster charging technology, so you do not have to worry about charging times despite the bigger capacity.

Price

Motorola Moto G Stylus hitten the shelves with a €270/$295 price tag in the configuration with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, Oppo F15 is available for about €355/$388 in the 8/128 GB configuration, and Poco X2 starts from just €205/$225 in the 6/64 GB variant. Overall, Poco X2 looks like a more complete device with its better chipset, great cameras, bigger battery, great software, and a 120 Hz refresh rate. And it is even a smartphone with a higher value for money, but you should note that these devices are sold in different markets, so it is currently impossible to make a fair price comparison.

Xiaomi Mi 10 “defeats” Rubik Cube world champion

Xiaomi has been releasing promotional videos ahead of the launch of its flagship smartphones, the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro, on Thursday, February 13. One promotional video posted on Weibo shows the Mi 10 taking on a Rubik’s Cube world champion and coming out on top.

The video, which was shared by Lei Jun, the company’s CEO, pits world champion, Du Yusheng, against robotic arms powered by the Mi 10 which in turn is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 processor.

The world record time for solving a Rubik’s Cube is actually 3.47 seconds while Du Yusheng’s own record is 6.47 seconds. However, with the Mi 10 powered robot, the battle is even over before you know it as the robot completes the challenge in just 1:43 seconds.

In another test carried out to demonstrate the processing power of the Mi 10 (Snapdragon 865), the phone is pitted against a notebook powered by Intel’s Core i7-8550U processor to calculate the value of Pi to a decimal of 10 million (only last 200 digits visible). The Mi 10 completed the calculation in 36.8 seconds while it took the notebook 92 seconds.

The Xiaomi Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro will be announced at an online-only event on Thursday, February 13 in China. It will then get a global launch in Spain on 23rd February. With manufacturers canceling their MWC 2020 press events and even pulling out completely, we won’t be surprised if the Mi 10 global launch event gets canceled too.

Huawei Mate 20 Lite now receiving EMUI 10 globally

Huawei first stared pushing EMUI 10 update to the Mate 20 Lite in Europe in November last year. That rollout was seen as a precursor to the global release of the Android 10-based latest custom ROM. The company has now started rolling out the update to Mate 20 Lite users globally. Huawei Mate 20 Lite

The new update brings the versions EMUI 10.0.0.172 and EMUI 10.0.0.170 depending on the region. Both versions have a file size of about 4GB. To check for the update,
Go to Settings > System > Software update > Check for Updates. If an update is available, it’ll ask if you want to download it. Alternatively,  open HiCare app > Update > Check for updates.Huawei Mate 20 Lite (Front)

EMUI 10 update brings improved smoothness and performance on Mate 20 Lite models. The company has even added a system-wide dark mode which even forces apps that don’t have a dark mode to comply. The system settings are better organized in this new version and the OS is designed to offer a better experience when working other devices like a Windows 10 laptop. EMUI 10 allows the smartphone to cast its screen directly on to the Windows 10 device, offering a seamless working experience. The update equally brings Android 10-inherent features.

The Mate 20 Lite was launched in 2018 packing a 6.3-inch Full-HD+ display with 2340 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and 19.5:9 aspect ratio, offering a pixel density of 409ppi. The device uses a notched display and is powered by a Kirin 710 chipset. It is impressive to see a two-year-old model get updated to the latest Android version this fast. We doubt, though, if the device will get any other update.
