Huawei P40 confirmed to launch in March 2020

According to a new report, Huawei P40 is confirmed to release in late March 2020. The news arrived after Richard Yu, CEO of the company’s consumer products division, stated the upcoming smartphones release date in an interview with the French press in Shenzhen, China.

The senior executive had stated that the Huawei P40 will be launched at the end of March during an event that will take place in Paris. Yu also mentioned that the P40 will “benefit” from a new “never seen” design alongside improved photographic capabilities and better performance. This basically means it’ll surpass its previous entries which is expected from a newer entry.

Huawei P40 will be the successor of Huawei P30 and P30 Pro smartphones that were released earlier on this year. Furthermore, it will be marketed through all the classic distributor channels, operators and resellers as well. The CEO also mentioned that the device will run Android 10 OS based EMUI home interface, which is the company’s own custom skin.

This means that Huawei’s HarmonyOS (Hongmeng OS in China) proprietary operating system will not be featured on the handset. However, it is to be expected since we already confirmed that based on a previous report that we had covered.

The service is basically an app/software platform which is similar to Google‘s Play Store. If the device succeeds, then Huawei will be able to attract a large number of developers (those that generally target Google’s API) for its app ecosystem.

e-Bikes the future leader of Electric Vehicles in the next decade?

Little by little, we have seen the slow but steady growth of electric vehicles and battery powered locomotives. These offer a glimpse of the future, which is a world with more sustainable forms of resources. Although that is not the case right now, but the world is in an active phase of moving away from fossil fuels.

Thus, leadings us here, with questions regarding what are the real aternatives to cars, bikes, and others. Well, apparently the answer lies with e-bikes.

Tesla Model S
Elon Musk’s Tesla Model S

According to a few reports, the next hit in EV (Electric Vehicles) is not Elon Musk’s Tesla cars or its Cybertruck, but the simple and effective e-bikes. Historically, electric bikes have not been as popular as the their more expensive counterparts. Rather, in most countries they are not even considered to be worth purchasing, with viability playing an important factor. In 2012, e-bikes represented lesser than 1 percent of total bike sales in the year. So how does a niche product with no actual market has the potential of becoming a major industry in the near future?

Since the past few years, notable advancements have been made in the automotive industry which includes upgrades to lithium-ion batteries. It is now noticeably more affordable to develop and produce a battery powered vehicle than before. Furthermore, developed countries are now more likely to also supply supplementing infrastructure that supports this new age form of vehicles as well.

With the globe already tackling global warming and pollution issues, it has become a national interest to invest in emission free vehicles. Hence, it has led to various analysts stating that e-bikes sales will receive a massive surge in demand within the next decade.

As suggested in some reports, the adoption rate of EVs is just 5.1 million units being in circulation. This number is expected to rise to only 12 million by 2025, but e-bikes sales, on the other hand, are expected to reach 40 million units by just 2023. And if you do the math, 40 million is more than three times that of 12 million electric vehicles in the world. Additionally, few other analytical firms have also estimated that the numbers can reach as high as 110 to even 130 million between 2020 to 2023. It is also expected that the e-bikes shipments will surpass electric vehicle sales within a year.

Frey's Electric Bike
Frey’s Electric Bike

As of right now, China is said to be the undisputed e-bike capital of the world. The country and its citizens have embraced the technology with many popular renting services and stations also being established to further grow the venture. Vietnam arrives in second with a few European and even Middle Eastern countries also embracing the e-bikes industry. One of the most common barriers to new technology is always mindset and the worry of transition towards new products that are more advanced. But with Government investments and fostering, the adoption rates can be raised significantly.

A Foldable E-Bike In Israel
A Foldable E-Bike In Israel (Manufactured in China)

In Southeast Asian countries, especially China, e-bikes popularity can also be accredited to their pricing strategy which can undercut their European counterparts with nearly half the price. Thus, the future with more technological advancement and economy in scales can see higher units being shipped globally. Even though the battery powered industry is still in its nascent stages, it has major expectations of showing real promise in the near future.

The world will largely benefit from e-bikes and its popularity. Although a hundred million is still shy of billions, it is very impactful when you considered that tens of billions of rides will be made with no emissions and help reduce traffic congestions on busy roads. This also leads to fewer resources being used and lesser pollutants in the environment.

However, the Egypt event was for the unveiling of the Nokia 2.3. Now, it has been reported that the Nokia 8.1 has been discontinued in the UK.

According to Nokia Power User, UK retailer, Clove, lists the Nokia 8 (2019) as discontinued and no longer available for sale while other stores such as Carphone Warehouse do not have any new models in stock.

Nokia 8.1 Discontinued

This new development can only mean one thing – a successor is coming. Although, in my own opinion I do not get why a phone has to get discontinued because a successor is about to launch. The Nokia 2.1 has not yet been discontinued even though it already has two successors – the Nokia 2.2 and Nokia 2.3.

The upcoming Nokia 8.2 is rumored to be the Snapdragon 765-powered smartphone scheduled to arrive in Q1 2020. However, the exact date is not known. It could be early (probably at CES 2020) or later at MWC 2020. However, since the Nokia 8.1 has been discontinued already, then the launch should be in January.

Nokia-Snapdragon-765-5G-phone

The upcoming phone will have 5G, ZEISS imaging, and a PureDisplay. An image of the phone shared at the Qualcomm Summit shows the phone has a circular camera housing, not unlike the Nokia 7.2.

In other news, HMD Global has discounted some of its phones in the UK and has included some nice gifts too. The Nokia 7.2 now sells for £249, down from £394 for the 6GB RAM version and it includes a free pair of Nokia Power Earbuds, a free clear case, and an additional year of warranty.

Nokia phone deals

The Nokia 4.2 is priced at £159 and you get a free dual-port car charger with Quick Charge 3.0, a clear case, and 1 extra year of warranty. The Nokia 3.2 is also now £109 and you get the same free gifts as the Nokia 4.2 along with an extra year of warranty. The Nokia 2.2 has also been discounted to £79 but you get a free Xpress-On Cover and an additional year of warranty.

You can purchase these phones on the official Nokia website.  The deals run until 10:59 PM on December 31, 2019.

How to enable Airtel WiFi Calling on smartphones with these simple steps?

Since the past few months, Airtel and Reliance Jio was working on the WiFi Calling feature in the NCR region. Last Week, Airtel became the first telecom provider in India to enable WiFi calling function for its prepaid and postpaid users. It will let users make calls over VoIP using the WiFi network. In today’s write-up, we will let our users know about how to enable Airtel WiFi Calling on smartphones.

airtel wifi calling

What is WiFi Calling?

It is a technology that allows users to make and receive calls over a wireless internet connection. It eliminates the use of a cellular network. No matter if the receiver has an internet connection or not, the caller needs to be on the WiFi to successfully connect the call over VoIP using the WiFi network. It has several advantages over the typical calling facility provided by cellular networks.

Advantages of WiFi Calling:

  • Unclog Cellular Network – In the areas of dense population, the carriers opt for the WiFi-calling facility. It allows companies to decongest their typical cellular networks.
  • No Extra charge – Airtel is currently offering the WiFI-calling facility at no extra charges.
  • HD Quality Audio – In some stranded off regions or scarcely populated areas, the carriers do not offer VoLTE or HD voice capability. However, with WIFi-calling, the users can make HD calls.
  • Expansion in-network coverage without more significant investment – It is a smart idea of expanding the network coverage without investing in the high-end infrastructure.

While announcing the service, the company spokesperson said, “Airtel Wi-Fi Calling is designed to enhance voice calling experience for Airtel smartphone customers, especially when they are indoors. With Airtel Wi-Fi Calling, customers with Wi-Fi at home or office will get excellent signal quality indoors. There will be no extra charge for calls made over Airtel Wi-Fi Calling, and the application consumes minimal data.”

Compatibility:

Airtel WiFi-Calling works only with compatible smartphones.

It currently supports :

  • Samsung J6, Samsung A10s, Samsung On6, Samsung M30s support Airtel Wi-Fi calling.
  • All iPhone starting iPhone 6s and above are supported. This means iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Plus, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Plus support Airtel Wi-Fi calling.
  • Xiaomi Redmi K20, Redmi K20 Pro, and POCO F1 support Airtel Wi-Fi calling.
  • OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus 7T, and OnePlus 7T Pro support Airtel Wi-Fi calling.
  • Support for more phones coming soon.

Prerequisites:

Some limitations are put forth by the Airtel while using the WiFi-Calling on its network.

  • The Phone should be compatible with the WiFi-Calling Network.
  • You should be residing in the Delhi NCR region to use the service as of now.
  • Upgrade to the latest firmware version.
  • Airtel Broadband connection is only supported as of now.

Steps to activate Airtel WiFi- Calling facility

  1. Make sure your smartphone supports the VoWifi feature, and it has been enabled.
  2. Connect to the Airtel Broadband connection.
  3. Turn on VoLTE service for Airtel SIM by heading to Settings > Networks > Airtel SIM > Toggle VoLTE.
  4. Now, enable WiFi call settings by heading to Settings > SIM & Network Settings > Airtel SIM > Activate Make Calls using WiFi option.
  5. That’s it.

Now, Airtel users having the devices mentioned above can easily access the WiFI-Calling facility. It is currently available for the Airtel users in the Delhi NCR region. However, the company is looking to expand the service to more cities very soon. If you have any problem while setting the VoWIFI facility, then let us know by commenting below.

Xiaomi Folding phone patent appears, features extending display

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Xiaomi are currently one of the most important smartphone companies around. They have an extremely strong lineup of devices, from budget devices, to mid-rangers, to top-of-the-line flagships. But despite all this, the company has yet to introduce to a proper Xiaomi folding phone.

While Xiaomi does technically have the Mi Mix Alpha, that’s a completely different type of device that doesn’t have the typical features of a folding phone. Some have even been questioning whether we’ll even see a folding phone from the company. Well, today we’ve have gotten a glimpse at some patents for such a device courtesy of LetsGoDigital.

Halfway through 2018, Xiaomi filed a design patent for a pull-out phone with a side bar. The documentation was approved and only recently published on December 6, 2019. There are some product images included where a device is shown that can be pulled into a tablet format. It’s a very interesting take on a folding phone, which we’ve seen before.

If you remember from last month, we saw a very similar design patented by LG where the device unrolled like a scroll from a small form factor into tablet-sized device. Unlike LG’s solution however, Xiaomi’s patent seems a lot more robust. In fact, Xiaomi’s device looks like it could legitimately take form and isn’t just a plain and obvious concept.

The Xiaomi version of an extendable device begins as a normal sized smartphone, which can then be pulled to the left to extend further. The camera module on the back seems to sit on what will be the pull tab, while the front cameras sit on a side bar akin to the current back camera situation on the Mi Mix Alpha. It’s definitely a good concept device.

Unfortunately, lots of patents get approved yet amount to nothing. A good example is the LG folding phone we just shared, which still has had no presence in any LG release. It’s a shame, but chances are we’re not going to see anything like this launch, at least not for the next few years. We’re definitely excited for the idea however, and we can’t wait to see someone actually attempt it.
