In an attempt to increase the screen size and to keep up with the bezel-less design trend started off by Essential Phone and iPhone X, smartphone OEMs have adopted the notched-display design for the past few years. The trend seems to be nearing its end as punch-hole design continues to gain ground.
Display notches are essentially a cut-out, at the top, of a part of the smartphone’s display. With display notches, smartphone OEMs are able to provide maximum screen space without abandoning the critical hardware at the top, such as the Selfie Camera, Receiver Speaker, other Sensor, LED Indicators. However, the design style has often come under criticism for distorting the display symmetry of the phones but that did not stop the rapid rise of the design. In less than 4 years after its adoption, the steady shift to punch-hole design has come under scrutiny. Realme‘s product director Wang Wei Derek offered some reasons why OEMs seem to be shifting to punch-hole design.
Mr Wang stated that one of the reasons for the shift is aesthetic fatigue of the waterdrop notch by users and manufacturers alike. In other words, we all are getting tired of the design style. Thus, the change in design pattern is a way of attracting users’ attention and improve market competitiveness.
Another reason he adduced is the popularity of the pop-up camera design among users who love to have that immersive full-screen design unobstructed by a notch of any sort. However, the punch-hole design is the closest and cheapest way to achieve the notch-less design without using a pop-up camera design. Manufacturers have to think of an alternative based on the cost of pop-up design and need for 5G phones with demand for a big battery.
In case you are at a fix why most of the punch-hole designs aren’t a single-hole design, Wang suggested what OEMs consider before going for a wide or single punch-hole.
1. Function-oriented: The purpose is nothing more than improving the user’s functional experience, such as adding a wide-angle camera to enhance the group selfie shooting experience. The design also allows for the adding of smart sensors to assist in the smart operation of mobile phones. Also, a Bokeh camera could also be added to give blur effects to selfies among other reasons.
2. Appearance-oriented: In terms of appearance, the single punch-hole design is usually more visually appealing. No doubt about this but some features have to be sacrificed like a powerful selfie camera.
With the current pace, most of the smartphones next year will likely have the punch-hole design, especially as OLED punch-hole displays are not being supplied by Chinese display manufacturers. Do you agree? Let us know what you think in the comment section.
WSJ confirmed that the Phase One deal has been finalized! It covers Agriculture, Intellectual Property Protection, Tech Transfer, Financial Opening and Currency.
After several rounds of tariffs on Chinese and U.S. made products in their respective markets, China and the U.S. have finally come very close to a mini trade deal. This news should come as a relief to companies based in both the markets as it will reduce as well as eliminate the new set of tariffs expected to be imposed on goods from China starting December 15.
The U.S. President Trump tweeted yesterday night that the U.S. was getting “VERY close to a BIG DEAL with China”. The exact details of the deal are not yet official, but the U.S. has reportedly agreed to scale back some of its existing tariffs on Chinese goods. The deal would also remove the next round of tariffs that would have hit another $150 billion worth of Chinese goods from December 15. In return, China will pledge in writing to purchase $50 billion worth of U.S. agricultural goods, among other items in 2020.
The upcoming round of U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods starting December 15 would have been damaging to both the countries. It included essential consumer goods such as smartphones, gaming consoles, computer monitors, and even clothing and footwear. On the same day, China would have imposed its own set of tariffs on American made goods such as automobiles, auto parts, corn, wheat, small aircrafts, among other items.
While this Phase I trade pact is almost official from the U.S. side, we are yet to hear an official announcement from the Chinese authorities. We won’t have to wait too long though, as an official statement or an absence of one before December 15 would confirm the status of the deal.
Huawei Mate 30 Pro is one of the best smartphones in the market today but does not come with Google apps because of the U.S. BAN
Note that this phase one trade deal is unlikely to decide Huawei‘s fate who’s currently on the U.S. entity list. This deal is more focused on working out an amicable agreement before the next round on hefty tariffs that’ll come into effect this Sunday, which will be damaging for both the markets.

This would be possible with its prototype 100W fast charging which was teased before.

Apple AirPods have seen the biggest discounts on Amazon, compared to other retailers, during the recent Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. Prospective buyers are still eyeing offers on the AirPods 2 and the AirPods Pro, as the smart headphones quickly sold out during the events. The Apple AirPods are still out of stock on Amazon at the time of publication. Although, you can buy a pair at Black Friday prices, and Amazon will start shipping as soon as the product is back in stock.
Analysts believe that the AirPods are headed towards mass-market domination, which could soon result in quarterly revenue over $4 billion during the holiday season. A benchmark last created by Apple at the peak of the iPod revolution back in 2007. Industry analyst Asymco recently published a report on Apple’s quarterly revenue from the Home, Wearables and Others category. While the Apple Watch surpassed the $4 billion mark in collected revenue back in Q4 2018, this is a first for the AirPods.
Asymco states that while it is difficult to calculate the exact revenue of every product in the Home and Wearables category since Apple does not reveal the official numbers. Estimating the revenue generated by the Apple Watch and subtracting it from the total revenue, gives an approximation for the AirPods. Based on those figures it is possible for the AirPods to overtake peak iPod sales. Asymco further believes that Apple will witness 50% YoY growth for wearables. The Cupertino-based tech giants have already begun increasing its AIrPods Pro production capacity, keeping the increasing demand in mind.

Many smartphone OEMs that had yet to fully utilize the early opportunity are now set to make an entrance in the mainstream market again.
According to the senior executive, ZTE will launch various 5G smartphones in 2020 which will include smartphones priced under 2000 Yuan and 3000 Yuan (roughly 286 to 429 USD). Notably, ZTE’s plans are quite similar to Xiaomi’s plans of launching 10 5G smartphones in 2020 with devices priced both under and over 2000 Yuan as well. Xu Feng also added that there will be 160 million 5G smartphones in the market out of which China is expected to account for more than half of them.
Qualcomm X55 5G Modem
Currently, China seems to be the most important country as a 5G market for ZTE. The company had launched its first 5G smartphone at the end of February 2019 which was dubbed the Axon 10 Pro 5G. It was powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC alongside the X50 5G modem. Thus, it can also be speculated that the company will launch its smartphones with Qualcomm’s 5G processors.
Apple Inc. has recently seen weak iPhone sales in China, according to Credit Suisse, adding to recent caution about the region. Shipments of the iPhone fell 35.4% on a year-over-year basis in November, “significantly lagging the 0.2% y/y increase in the broader Chinese smartphone market,” claims analyst Matthew Cabral.
Apple’s share of the Chinese smartphone market slipped to 5 percent from 7 percent last month as it struggled to compete with Chinese juggernaut Huawei, which captured 42 percent of its local market last month. This drop has come despite the Chinese smartphone market being slightly up and follows a double-digit drop in October of 10.3%.
Cabral also wrote that Apple would have a tough time pushing through tariff-related price increases to U.S. consumer if the 15per cent tariffs on billions in Chinese-made consumer goods come into effect on Dec. 15. Apple has asked the Trump administration to waive levies on China-made Apple Watches, iPhone components and other consumer products.
Apple also trails those other domestic players—Huawei, Vivo, Oppo and Xiaomi—and its 5.1% annualised market share it record in the third quarter represents a year of decline. There was something of a boost when the Apple iPhone 11 launched, with some strong early sales, but that has not endured. The fact those models do not include 5G connectivity is a major issue for the U.S. giant, and we’re curious how they’ll

The dream of Mark Zuckerberg to unify all the infrastructure of three services – WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger appear to be distant. The US Federal Officials may hamper the process as they are seeking considerable action against Facebook over antitrust concerns over products interaction in the backend, cites a report in the Wall Street Journal.
The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) could prevent Facebook from implementing the unification process if found the process anticompetitive. The Federal Trade Commission will conduct a detailed survey to materialise on how Facebook integrates its products at the backend. Upon noticing any anomaly, the FTC could seek an injunction against the whole unification policy. However, FTC would also require a five-member majority and suit filing in federal court to make injunction possible.
On the other hand, Facebook has been worried about the Federal Trade Commission’s proceedings against its “interoperability” rules. Primarily, the social-media giant’s interoperability policies prevent other services to compete against Facebook.
It is not currently clear whether the agency will seek an injunction or will file an antitrust lawsuit against the company over its interoperability policies. According to a person familiar with the matter, reveals that the FTC could take possible action as soon as the next month. It is also believed that the agency will ban some interoperability policies to make the stop the anti-competitive acts by Facebook.

The new update brings a major Android OS update alongside Samsung’s One UI 2.0 custom skin. The company had revealed its beta program for this update several weeks ago which is finally available as an official stable version for Galaxy Note 10 owners. Open Beta programs are essentially early unpolished builds that are crucial for the company to test and develop a bug-free stable build for its users.
According to previous reports, Samsung was initially expected to update the Galaxy S10 series around Christmas in December 2019, while the Galaxy Note 10 receives it sometime next year. However, the South Korean tech giant has already started the rollout of the Android 10 update for the Galaxy S10 series over the past couple of weeks.

As of right now, the update is only available for those who were a part of the One UI 2.0 beta program for the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+. Hence, other users across the globe are expected to receive the update within the next few days. Previously, Samsung had released a roadmap for the Android 10 update for its Galaxy smartphones. Although, the company is now seemingly ahead of its own schedule by weeks with this quick pace.
Samsung’s first foldable smartphone — Galaxy Fold, went official earlier this year after months of delays because of build quality. However, the smartphone seems to be quite popular in the market.
Samsung Electronic’s president Young Sohn revealed during an event in Berlin that “there’s a million people that want to use this product at $2,000 each.” He then followed up to clarify that the company claims to have sold 1 million units of the Galaxy Fold.
While the numbers are not much compared to the tens of millions of phones that Samsung and Apple move each quarter, but this is quite surprising given the phone’s pricing of around $2,000 as many small manufacturers struggle to achieve the same feat.
For those who are unaware, the Samsung Galaxy Fold smartphone went on sale in September this year, months later than originally planned. Samsung canceled its original launch plans and went back to the drawing board, strengthening the phone’s design and revising parts of it to make it less prone to breakage.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold smartphone presents a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display with a 1536 x 2152 pixels screen resolution where can use three apps at the same time which Samsung calls Three-app Multitasking.
When the device is folded into phone mode, it offers a 4.6-inch display with 840 x 1960 pixels screen resolution. It comes with a feature called App Continuity which automatically adjust an app when you switch screens. It is powered by a 7nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 octa-core processor paired with 12GB of RAM and packs 512GB of internal storage using UFS 3.0 technology.
Connectivity options on the phone include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, NFC, and USB Type-C port. The smartphone also comes with stereo speakers that are equipped with Dolby Atmos surround sound technology.
It comes with camera module that’s made up of a 16MP ultra-wide camera, a 12MP telephoto camera, and another 12MP wide-angle camera. On the front side, it comes with a 10MP sensor. It runs Samsung One UI with Android 9 Pie operating system out-of-the-box and is powered by a 4,380mAh battery which is split into two units and supports Wireless Charging as well as Wireless PowerShare for reverse charging.
Yesterday, the Samsung Galaxy Fold smartphone was launched in the Indian market, which comes packed with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. In India, the phone has been priced at ₹1,64,999 (~$2,323) and will go on sale from 20th October.
Huawei launched the Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G processors this year, and they’re quite the impressive chipsets. The latter was the very first 5G equipped SoC on the market, with 10.3 billion transistors and 7nm EUV technology. However, the Kirin 990’s CPU / GPU architecture disappointingly saw no big upgrades, though that will finally change with the upcoming Kirin 1020 SoC.
The latest news shows that the Kirin 1020 processor is code-named “Baltimore”. It’s not surprising, since Huawei’s chips have always been named after cities. We also already know the chipset will be built with TSMC’s 5nm process for better power efficiency and more stable performance. The bigger change comes with the CPU cores however.
The Kirin 1020 will also use the new Cortex-A78 cores skipping the A77 cores that you can find in other flagship SoCs like the MediaTek 1000 Dimensity. When compared to the Cortex-A76 on the Kirin 990, the the new core architecture will allow the Kirin 1020 to easily gain a 50% performance improvement over its predecessor.
That’s a huge upgrade to what was already a fairly speedy SoC. On top of that, it gives Huawei the upper hand against other competitors like the aforementioned MediaTek, who are still relying on Cortex-A77 cores for performance. Nothing has been leaked regarding the GPU, but we’re hoping we can expect similarly big upgrade.
Samsung’s new M-series of smartphones that were introduced this year in India have met with positive reception. In the second half of the year, Samsung had launched Galaxy M10s, M20s and M30s as enhanced versions of the Galaxy M10, M20 and M30 phones that were made official at the beginning of the year. A fresh report has revealed that the South Korean tech giant has already started working on Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M31 phones.
Yesterday, Samsung launched Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 as the first Galaxy A 2020 phones. According to a new report on Sammobile, the company will be using the same naming strategy for its upcoming M-series phones. The two new M-series that have reportedly entered developmental phase are Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M31.
The report has revealed that SM-M115F is the model number of the Galaxy M11 phone whereas the model number of the SM-M315F is Galaxy M31. It has further stated that the Galaxy M11 and M31 phones will both arrive in 32 GB and 64 GB storage variants. No other information is available on the specifications of the Galaxy M11 and M31 phones. There is a possibility that the Galaxy M31 will retain the massive 6,000mAh battery that is available inside the Galaxy M30s phone.
Since the M-series phones include Galaxy M20s/20 and Galaxy M40 phones, it is likely that the company could be also planning to launch the Galaxy M21 and Galaxy M41 phones in the coming year. The newly unveiled Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 are blessed Galaxy Note 10 like Infinity-O displays. It is unclear whether any of the upcoming M-series phones will sport the new display design.
The Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 phones were made official in January followed by a February launch for the Galaxy M30. Hence, it appears that the company will announce the new M-lineup phones in the starting months of 2020 to rival with the budget-friendly phones from its Chinese competitors. The new M-series phones are expected to come preloaded with Android 10 OS. India remains the main market for the Galaxy M-series. It remains to be seen whether the M-series it made available to wider markets.
Speaking of India launch, the newly unveiled Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 are also expected to debut in the country in early 2020. The Galaxy A51 has a 6.5-inch FHD+ display, Exynos 9611 SoC, Android 10 OS, up to 8 GB of RAM, up to 128 GB storage, 48-megapixel quad cameras, a 32-megapixel selfie camera, in-display fingerprint reader and a 4,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging. The Galaxy A71 features a 6.7-inch FHD+ display, Snapdragon 730 SoC, Android 10 OS, 6 GB / 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, 64-megapixel quad cameras, 32-megapixel front camera, in-screen fingerprint sensor and a 4,500mAh battery with 25W fast charging.

According to Lei Jun, the Founder and Chairman, Xiaomi will continue to promote and develop 5G smartphones in the near future with the release of smartphones over 2000 Yuan in the first half of 2020. The company is also expected to launch at least ten 5G smartphones in 2020 which is in line with many of its senior executives’ belief of 5G being an important advancement in technology.
