Motorola Moto RAZR first official-looking image leaks

Motorola is gearing up to elicit nostalgia with the launch of the Moto Razr foldable phone reportedly scheduled to take place on November 13. As the date draws closer, we expect the rumour mills to continue to buzz with leaks and buzzing it is!Moto Razr

The latest leak is that of an official-looking image of the Moto Razr shared by tipster Evan Bass on his Twitter account. The image said to be of the Razr gives us one of the distinct views of the device with the juicy details in tow. The design indeed resembles that of the classic Moto Razr lineup fro where the foldable phone design concept emanated. The design includes the bulky chin. The chin holds a physical button which may well house the fingerprint sensor.

The image doesn’t reveal all aspects of the device in full but the display will likely be a long one as it seems to occupy the entire front aspect including where the physical button sits on the retro model. The foldable phone seems to have the same form factor as its progenitor which means it won’t be very wide. Thus, it may as well have a custom UI design for the long display when it is opened. The front will also likely house a smaller display when it is folded.Moto Razr

Earlier rumours tipped the Moto Razr foldable phone to come with a staggering $1,500 price tag. It features a 6.2-inch display when opened but the aspect ratio is not known right now. The device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor paired with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage. The device is also rumoured to come in white, black or gold. It will get its juice from a 2,730-mAh battery.

Smartisan OS 7.0 launched, brings 332 new updates and features

Earlier today at the Beijing Mobile University Olympic Stadium, Smartisan OS product manager Zhu Haizhou officially released Smartisan OS 7.0. It comes with a slew of full screen gestures, as well as 322 basic UI updates and a whole bunch of brand new features. So, let’s take a closer look at Smartisan OS 7.0.

First off, let’s take a look at some of the new features being brought to Smartisan OS 7.0. Among the new features, we’ve got double tap to wake up, the aforementioned screen gestures, DC dimming, dual WIFI soft routing and multitasking cards. On top of that, we’ve got a brand new game mode that makes notifications appear in small windows and boosts performance.

There’s a new voice assistant on-board and a new piece of software in Big Bang 3.0. Big Bang 3.0 brings a set of interesting functions. It can separate sound content from videos, recognize text, convert sound from the phone to text in real time, screen record GIFs and even burst capture screenshots. It’s nothing too crazy, but it sounds quite handy.

Smartisan also gave a roadmap for when devices would get the update. The Nut Pro 3 gets Smartisan OS 7.1 stable version on the night of launch, and it’ll get Smartisan OS 7.2 stable version in December. The Nut R1 and Nut Pro 2S on the other hand will only get the update some time in December.

Realme X2 vs Redmi Note 8 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy M30s: Specs Comparison

In this second half of 2019 value for money, smartphones are dominating the scene. While the smartphone market returned to growth, most of the best-selling devices are midrange since people are mostly searching for the best device without spending a fortune. Among the latest smartphones with the highest value for money, there is definitely Realme X2 which hitten the global market a few days ago. In the past days, even Samsung Galaxy M30s made its debut in Europe, while last month we saw the so-called “affordable gaming phone” Redmi Note 8 Pro hitting the shelves. Here is a specs comparison between these three affordable alternatives to high-performance devices.

Design

None of these devices is very brilliant when it comes to aesthetics. My preference goes to the Realme X2 for various reasons. First of all, unlike the Samsung Galaxy M30s, it has a glass back (protected by Gorilla Glass 5) instead of a plastic body (only the frame is made of plastic). Further, it has an in-display fingerprint scanner unlike both its rivals, which makes the rear side much more elegant. It is even a more compact and more lightweight smartphone compared to Redmi Note 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy M30s.

Display

Redmi Note 8 Pro usually does not meet people’s expectations since it comes with an IPS display instead of an AMOLED panel like the ones found on the Realme X2 and Samsung Galaxy M30s. But you should also consider that Redmi Note 8 Pro is the only to support the HDR technology and it has a high 500 nits peak brightness. It even comes with a slightly bigger display that is better for advanced users and gamers. Despite these things, I still prefer the Realme X2 with its deeper blacks since it offers an in-display fingerprint scanner. But this does not mean anything, choose according to your tastes since there are no big differences.

Specs & Software

The Helio G90T chipset by MediaTek found on the Redmi Note 8 Pro is the most amazing if we only consider performance on the paper. It is not a case that Redmi Note 8 Pro is defined as an affordable gaming smartphone. But despite it does not overclass its performance, Snapdragon 730G looks more interesting because it is built at 8 nm (instead of 12 nm) and it has lower energy consumption. However, the Redmi Note 8 Pro has a way bigger battery than the Realme X2, so the gap is covered. Android 9 Pie is preinstalled on each of these phones.

Camera

Realme X2 is the smartphone with the most convincing camera department: on the rear side, it has a 64 MP quad-camera that is very similar to the quad-camera found on the Redmi Note 8 Pro. But on the front side, it has a way better 32 MP sensor for selfies. Samsung Galaxy M30s is way inferior with its 48 MP triple camera and a less bright focal aperture.

Battery

Samsung Galaxy M30s is the absolute winner of the battery life comparison. It sports a mammoth 6000 mAh battery and there is no way Realme X2 and Redmi Note 8 Pro can reach a similar battery life. But it will take a while to charge it since you do not get the blazing 30W fast charging technology of the Realme X2 which fully charges its 4000 mAh battery in just 35 minutes.

Price

Realme X2 launched in the global market for just €299/$333, while for both the Galaxy M30s and the Redmi Note 8 Pro you need €249/$278 or €259/$289 depending on the market. Overall, I would personally go for the Realme X2 due to its nice AMOLED display, under-display fingerprint scanner, great camera department, and very fast charging technology. But there are very marginal differences, Redmi Note 8 Pro offers a bigger battery and amazing performance, plus it costs less. Samsung Galaxy M30s only makes sense if battery life is your main concern.

Smartisan Nut Pro 3 arrives with 2 designs, 48MP Quad Cameras, SD855+ and Smartisan OS 7.0

Smartisan is back with a new phone after nearly a year of being absent from the smartphone scene. Its latest phone is the Smartisan Nut Pro 3 and it has arrived to take on other flagships.

Smartisan Nut Pro 3

Design

I have always been a fan of Smartisan’s design as it stands out from that of its competitors. The new Nut Pro 3 doesn’t deviate from that design and even adds some new features.

First, the phone has a U-shaped notch which makes my earlier statement about the phone having a unique design ironical. But we are in a world where manufacturers are trying to cram large displays into small frames and its either a notch, a punch hole, or a pop-up selfie camera.

While the front of the phone isn’t striking, the back of the device is. The Smartisan Nut Pro 3 has four rear cameras placed in a rectangular housing unlike any we have seen before. Three of the sensors are arranged vertically while the fourth is at the top left. Below is a long strip LED flash. However, this design is limited to the black and green variants.

Smartisan Nut Pro 3 all colors

The white version has a different design. Rather than a long strip for the LED flash, it has a pill-shaped LED flash. Smartisan gave an explanation for this. According to them, everyone is focused on harmony when it comes to quad -camera design but they are not. So do not worry, the camera configuration is the same, it is just the design that is different.

Smartisan is not done surprising us with the design. At the bottom of the phone is the manufacturer’s familiar hammer logo but it isn’t just there for branding purposes. Smartisan says there is a breathing light under the logo which lights up when you have notifications. this is Handy if your phone is lying face down. Neat, right?

Smartisan Nut Pro 3 thickness

The Nut Pro 3 is also pretty thin, measuring 7.8 millimeters even with its 4000mAh battery capacity. Compare that to the Mi 9 Pro 5G which measures 8.5 millimeters and has the same battery capacity

Specifications

The Nut Pro 3 has a 6.39-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a wide color gamut and 2 nits ultra-low brightness. There is an in-display fingerprint scanner for unlocking the device. The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855+ processor and comes in three configurations – 8+128GB, 8+256GB, and 12+256GB.

On the back of the phone is Sony’s IMX586 48MP f/1.75 camera and it is paired with a 13MP 1.12um ultrawide angle camera with a 123° FOV. There is also an 8MP telephoto camera and a 5MP 2cm macro camera. Smartisan says they added an algorithm that intelligently corrects distortion when using the ultrawide angle camera. The selfie camera is a 20MP Samsung 3T1 sensor with an f/2.0 aperture and 1.8um pixel size.

The Smartisan Nut Pro 3 packs several camera features including Super Night View 2.0 and 480fps slow-motion. The phone also ships with two popular apps pre-installed – NOMO and Cut-Off (剪映). The NOMO camera app comes with four free camera filters (135 M, 135 B, FISHEYE and CAM BOY). You can also record videos with the rear and front-facing cameras at the same time.

The phone runs Smartisan UI 7.0 based on Smartisn OS 7.0 which brings lots of new features including Bing Bang 3.0, One Step 2.0, and Idea Pills 2.0. Its 4000mAh battery supports both 5V/3A and 9V/2A fast charge. There is dual-SIM support, a USB Type-C port but no audio jack.

Price and Availability

The Smartisan Nut Pro 3 is priced at ¥2899 (~$412) for the 8GB RAM + 128GB version. The 8GB RAM + 256GB version is ¥3199(~$455) and the 12GB RAM + 256GB version is ¥3599 (~$511).

Smartisan Nut Pro 3 cases

The phone is available for purchase on JD.com, Tmall, and the official Smartisan site. Smartisan is also back with its story-based cases which start at ¥49 (~$7).

5G iPhone coming in 2020, will feature Qualcomm 5nm X55 modem chip

Though a little late than its competitors, Apple is set to enter the 5G space in 2020. According to a report by Nikkei Asian Review, Apple is mobilizing suppliers in order to ship as many as 80 million 5G iPhones in the calendar year 2020. The report said that Apple will launch three flagship 5G iPhone models that will carry the 5G modem chip from Qualcomm.

Apparently the chips making this possible will be a combination of Apple’s next-gen A14 Bionic chip, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X55 modem chip. What’s interesting is that the Apple A14 Bionic is rumored to be the company’s first chip built with 5nm technology. This is interesting as Apple and Qualcomm had only just settled their patent dispute in April.

Moving from 7nm to 5nm will allow the chip to house more technology on the relatively same surface, making it more efficient. It’s unlikely to be the first 5nm chip, as Huawei is expected to unveil its next Kirin processor which will also be built on 5nm tech. In 2018, Huawei beat Qualcomm to the punch with the world’s first 7nm chip, the Kirin 980. Then this year, the Kirin 990 was the first chip to embed a 5G modem, among many others.

Apple on Wednesday reported its fiscal fourth-quarter 2019 earnings, which saw the company earn a record $64 billion in revenue, up 2 percent year-on-year. But iPhone sales continued to decline compared to last year, bringing in $33.36 billion in revenue, down 9.2 percent. Apple also revealed that it has set a new Q4 earnings record in India and several other markets, including the US, Brazil, and various South-East Asian countries.

Whether the presence of a 5G iPhone will boost the company forward remains to be seen. Their competitors have already taken a lead when it comes to 5G, but Apple has a fanbase of supporters that remain loyal to the company irregardless, so it’s hard to say. We’ll have to wait and see when the 5G iPhones inevitably launch.

Xiaomi crowdfunds the SCTW-70 Star Trang Telescope with a smartphone mount

Earlier in April this year, Xiaomi had launched the Star Trang Telescope. The tech giant has now crowdfunded a new model SCTW-70 with a 70mm aperture lens, having a focal length of 500mm as well as a matching aspheric 4mm eyepiece which can achieve up to 125x zoom. The device comes with a cheaper crowdfunding price of 369 yuan ($52).Xiaomi Star Trang Telescope

The Xiaomi Star Trang SCTW-70 Telescope comes with a two-stage stainless steel tripod which is sturdy and durable, giving it good stability. It is especially suitable for observing ultra-long distance (lunar pit, sunspot, etc). Some ordinary astronomical telescopes, due to poor stability of the stent, can cause eye fatigue and even dizziness when viewing. There are also accessory discs which prevent the eyepieces and accessories from getting damaged. There is equally a carry backpack with custom-built pearl cotton lining for better protection of the telescope. The backpack also has double webbing handles for a more comfortable grip.Xiaomi Star Trang Telescope

This telescope is also very simple to assemble. The main mirror, eyepiece, finder and other accessories are assembled by all-metal die-casting brackets and then fastened with matching screws. The whole telescope can be installed in just one or two minutes. The focal length adjustment device is designed with an accurate scale, and the nut is gently screwed.

Xiaomi Star Trang Telescope The SCTW-70 telescope’s main lens uses a 70mm double lens. The telescope objective lens is a high-quality glass lens with a full-surface multi-layer coating which effectively improves the optical performance of the lens. The image reproduction is truly sharp. The finder, the zenith mirror and the bracket AZ theodolite also come standard with the favourite brackets for mobile phone photography, allowing users to record the more beautiful and realistic scenery on their mobile phones.

Check out the performance of MediaTek Helio P90 A.I. SoC in Ulefone Armor 7 (video)

Recently, Ulefone launched this year’s rugged flagship, Ulefone Armor 7, featuring a triple camera with 48MP main sensor and the most powerful P-Series SoC of MediaTek, Helio P90. Users immediately expressed their satisfaction as it’s hard to find a rugged phone with high-end performance. Today, the Chinese manufacturer released a video on YouTube showing the performance of the device in various tests.

Helio P90 comes with ARM A75 and A55 cores and the maximum CPU frequency reaches up to 2.2GHz.  In AnTuTu Benchmark, the Armor 7 scored a total of 210472 points while the CPU score was 81706 points and the GPU score was 41621 points. This outpaces the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Series that scores around 170000 points at most. Also, with the help of the APU 2.0 AI engine, Helio P90 approaches the performance of Qualcomm’s high-end chipsets. In the AI Benchmark test, the SoC scored 5780 points.

Of course, benchmarks are benchmarks and real-life performance is a totally different case. As seen in the video, thanks to Helio P90 SoC and the 8GB of RAM, apps start-up speed or game performance is excellent. Also, multitasking is fluid and gaming is responsive and consistent with the benchmark results.

Other than performance, the Armor 7 is protected against drops and complies with the IP68 and IP69K standards against water and dust. It can stay under 1.5m of water for 30 minutes and is also compliant with the MIL-STD-810G military standard. It sports a 6.3” FHD+ waterdrop screen with 19.5:9 aspect ratio, 128GB of internal storage, heart rate sensor, 16MP selfie camera, 5500mAh battery with Qi 10W wireless charging, face and fingerprint unlock, global network bands, and Android 9.0 Pie.

Ulefone Armor 7

The phone is already on presale over at Banggood for $369.99 and the presale will end on November 4th. During the presale period, you can get an extra free gift bag including a tempered glass and a sling. For more details about the phone and the presale, visit the official product page.

Xiaomi’s 30W Vertical Air-Cooled Wireless Charger will go on sale starting 1st Nov, Price and Features

On the 24th of September, Xiaomi unveiled the Mi 9 Pro 5G, Mi MIX Alpha and MIUI 11. Besides, it also unveiled the 30W Wireless Fast Charger which will be available purchase via Xiaomi’s e-store starting tomorrow. In terms of pricing, the mobile accessory will be sold for 199 yuan which roughly translates to $28.Xiaomi 30W wireless charger

The 30W wireless charger has an ultra-quiet built-in fan and an air duct, both of which help in better heat dissipation and allow it to run smoothly even when charging at maximum load.

The base of the wireless charger is made out of Aluminum which features a tiny LED notification light, on the other hand, the angled stand against which the smartphone would rest is made out of plastic. Needless to say, due to its design, this wireless charger also doubles as a smartphone stand.

Xiaomi’s 30 W wireless charger is based on Qi charging standard therefore, it is compatible with most phones that support wireless charging. Talking about charging speeds, this wireless charger can charge a Mi 9T Pro 5G that is powered 4000 mAh battery to 50% in just 25 minutes, whereas a full charge takes about 69 minutes.

Naturally, the charging speed will vary on different smartphones depending on their maximum supported fast charging. For example, Apple‘s latest flagship, the 11 Pro Max only supports 7.5 W of wireless fast charging and it will take considerably longer to replenish fully.

Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is getting EMUI 10 closed beta program based on Android 10

After Huawei announced the EMUI 10 open beta program for the international Mate 20 series, the company has announced EMUI 10 closed beta program for the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G. Note that this update is based on Android 10, so closed beta users will be the first to get the taste of the new Android version.

Huawei Mate 20 X (5G) starts EMUI10 internal test

If you are using the Mate 20 X 5G as your daily driver, we would advise against installing a close beta EMUI 10. The closed beta build will have a lot of bugs that could hinder some of the smartphone’s essential features. Also, Huawei notes that some apps may still not be optimized for Android 10.

Interested users in China who want to enroll in the program can do it via Huawei’s Club app> Forum> Section Category> All Sections> EMUI Zone> Upgrade Early Adoption.

It’s good to see companies like Huawei and even Samsung working on Android 10 builds for their 5G models so quickly. Unfortunately, OnePlus 7 Pro 5G users will have to wait till Q1 2019 to get the new Android version.

Xiaomi Mi Watch can store & play music independently

Another day and yet another Mi Watch feature confirmed. Xiaomi revealed a few hours back that the Mi Watch can independently play music with the option to even download it to its storage. So you don’t have to rely on your smartphone to stream music. This can come in really handy when you don’t have your phone around, like when you are out for your morning jogs. And it looks like you can even play your music via its speakers.

Mi Watch music play independent

Independent music playback isn’t new on smartwatches. Even Amazfit’s Pace lineup offers this particular feature and personally, I find it very useful as I don’t have to carry my smartphone around for music. However, the Mi Watch could make things even more interesting as it features an eSIM which means you can ditch your phone most of the time.

The Mi Watch will also, unsurprisingly, come with a heart rate sensor and smart home controls. You also get a replaceable fluororubber strap in multiple color options.

The Mi Watch will come with an MIUI for Watch OS. You will be able to install a number of different apps on the watch. As for the hardware, the Mi Watch will come feature Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor with connectivity options such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS, and even an eSIM. The watch is confirmed to feature speakers which means you should be able to make and receive calls on the watch, just like a smartphone.

XIDU PhilBook Max gets more RAM and a more powerful CPU

The XIDU PhilBook Max has been an important model in the company’s lineup as it managed to become a success thanks to its above-average specs that came at a great price. The most important feature was the 14.1″ FHD NanoEdge touchscreen and its durable 360-degree hinge that became helpful in many use cases.

XIDU PhilBook Max

Besides the rest of the specs, the PhilBook Max came with a not so powerful Intel Apollo Lake J3355 Dual-Core CPU as well as 6GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 128GB SSD. Well, XIDU decided to improve that sector and make the PhilBook Max and even more complete laptop as it just got upgraded to a Quad-Core Intel E3950 CPU and got 2GB more RAM for a total of 8GB. The upgrade contributes to making the device up-to-date and future-proof, performance-wise.

XIDU PhilBook Max

The rest of the specs remain the same meaning that it comes with a lightweight metal body of 1.39kg and just 16.4mm thickness while connectivity is top-notch with 2 x USB 3.0, Mini-HDMI, MicroSD card reader, SSD expansion slot, headphone output and combined audio input connector, backlit keyboard, 2MP webcam, 802.11 ac/a/b/g/n WiFi, and a battery that lasts at least 5 hours.

XIDU PhilBook Max

Despite the almost 30% performance bump it got, its price remains the same as the previous version, $399.99 that is. And f course, XIDU is still active in more than 32 countries around the world and continues to expand. You can get the PhilBook Max on the following online store at a discounted price using the coupons provided when needed. For more discount coupons on other XIDU products, check out this list.

Global smartphone sales return to growth: Samsung & Huawei gain, Others lose

For the first time in the last two years, smartphones sales have returned to growth claims a report published by Strategy Analytics. In the Q3 of 2019, global smartphone sales hit the 366 million mark which is about 2% higher compared to the same quarter in yesteryear. While the overall sales have seen an upward trend only two companies were able to surpass their previous sales figures which include Samsung and Huawei.

Samsung shipped a total of 78.2 million smartphones worldwide in Q3 2019 which is about 8% higher percent in comparison to Q3 of 2018 when the company sold 72.3 million units. The South Korean company’s global market share has also grown from 20% to 21% YoY for the said time period. Worth highlighting, the devices that led Samsung’s sales to boost include the high-end Galaxy Note 10 lineup and the budget to mid-range focused Galaxy A lineup.

Chinese tech titan, Huawei managed to surprise everyone as its sales grew even after the U.S commerce department imposed a ban on it that prevents its handsets to ship with Google services. During the Q3 of 2018 and 2019, Huawei sales grew from 51.8 million to 66.7 million which is 29 % higher. Similar to Samsung, Huawei’s global market share also increased but at a much higher rate from 14% a year ago to 18% now.

Surprisingly, the “much higher rate” would sound like an understated phrase if the global growth figures are compared to Chinese growth figures. In its home country, Huawei’s sales figure grew an astounding 66% YoY for the same time period. In the Q3 of 2018, Huawei sold 25 million units in China which grew to 41.5 million in the July to August quarter of 2019.

When the data from two reports are combined, it is revealed that Huawei’s global market except for its home country slumped 1.6 million units from 26.8 million units in the Q3 of 2018 to 25.2 million units in the Q3 of 2019. Even though Huawei’s overall sales did see an upward trend, we will have to wait and observe for how long can the company continue to thrive with sales boost only in its home country.

MIUI Quick Settings app brings MIUI’s buried settings to the forefront

Over the course of recommending devices to friends and families, I have come across folks that swear by Xiaomi’s Android-based MIUI operating system. Some of these folks will not even touch Xiaomi’s Android One phones.

MIUI has some pretty useful features that are hidden to the average user. A third-party app called MIUI Quick Settings is now available which allows you easy access to these settings.

[envira-gallery id=”286821″]

Developed by Ruby Faick, the app description says it is an easy way to access MIUI’s engineering mode. With the app, you can switch between networks and band modes, change the power mode, adjust display size, and even manage notifications. It also has an Android Test and Hardware Test built-in. Oh! There is also a Night Mode available for the app.

The MIUI Quick Settings app is just 2.9MB in size and it works with all devices running MIUI (Android Lolipop and above). There is a disclaimer that says changing system preferences may damage your device and the developer cannot be held responsible.

You can download MIUI Quick Settings on the Google Play Store.
