Samsung wants to put Ads on your phone

If you thought ads on MIUI were bad, know that there’s another manufacturer who is looking to join Xiaomi to show ads on its smartphones. And it could be worse since we are talking about Samsung, who is currently the world’s largest smartphone maker.

Samsung Mobile Ads trademark application
Samsung Mobile Ads trademark application

According to a trademark application submitted to the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) on October 1, 2019, Samsung has applied for a trademark ‘Samsung Mobile Ads’ that applies to smartphones and tablets and pertains to advertising services. From the application, it’s clear that Samsung is looking to try out its luck in mobile advertising.

The South Korean smartphone maker isn’t really new to advertising. The company currently has the Samsung Ads program for its smart TVs. While there’s an option to disable these Smart TV ads, it’s hidden well inside the TV’s ‘terms and conditions’ menu. In short, Samsung has ensured that it won’t be easy to find this option and disable it. It would be really annoying if Samsung tries to reproduce this strategy for its mobile ads as well.

Change in Samsung’s Mobile Strategy?

With the ever-increasing competition from the Chinese giants, Samsung’s strategy has changed over the past few months. The company is churning out at least one mid-range device in Asia and Europe. Even the recently launched Galaxy M30s is likely to land in Europe very soon. With so many devices in the market, Samsung could be contemplating the idea of mobile ads on its devices.

Galaxy M30s
Samsung launched the Galaxy M30S with 6000mAh battery in India recently

However, note that this was just a trademark application and Samsung has in no way confirmed that it will start showing ads on its smartphones. So we’ll have to wait for more information from the company.

Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha is listed for purchase in China but no one will buy it

Last month, Xiaomi unveiled its new concept smartphone named Mi MIX Alpha which comes with features that are not seen on any other smartphone in the market and are currently unique to Mi MIX Alpha.

With features like wraparound display and 108MP primary camera sensor, the smartphone was expected to carry higher pricing. The Mi MIX 4 has been announced for a price of 19,999 Yuan, which roughly converts to $2,814.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 Sale Listing China

The smartphone, which will go into mass production by the end of this year in a limited quality, isn’t going on sale anytime soon. However, the smartphone has been found listed on Tmall.com for a price of 999,999 Yuan (~$139,889).

While the pricing listed for the smartphone seems to be a placeholder, the “Buy Now” and “Add to Cart” buttons are active, which means that you can purchase the smartphone with the mentioned pricing.

The official pricing of the Mi MIX Alpha is already on the higher side and no one is going to purchase the device at 50 times more cost than the official pricing. And that indeed is the case since no one has purchased the device yet, which is evident from the purchase counter for the listing shown on the website.

Coming to the smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha is the world’s first smartphone with a curved display that wraps around almost the entire device. Except for the tiny vertical strip that houses the camera at the back, the display surrounds the entire smartphone, including the sides and the back.

This is a single display panel of 7.92-inch that wraps around the entire body bringing the screen to body ratio to a staggering 180.6%! This is made possible also because of the extremely narrow 2.15mm bezels on the top and the bottom.

Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha featured
Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha is like a permanently folded phone

It is also the world’s first smartphone to feature a 100MP+ resolution camera sensor. This is made possible by using the Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX 108MP camera sensor at the back of the device. The sensor was developed in close collaboration with Xiaomi, hence it’s no surprise that we are seeing it first on the Mi Mix Alpha 5G.

The 108MP primary sensor on the Mi Mix Alpha is ultra-large with a 1/1.33″ sensor which is capable of outputting 12032 x 9024-pixel resolution images. It is coupled with a 12MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and a 20MP ultra-wide-angle camera lens.

The device is confirmed to be powered by the Snapdragon 855+ processor with 5G dual SIM support. There will be at least one version with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.0 storage. The battery isn’t very large at 4,050mAh but it does support 40W fast charging just like the Mi 9 Pro 5G.

Apple iPhone SE 2 design leaked, and key details appear

Apple had announced the 4-inch iPhone SE smartphone in 2016. It came with internals of the iPhone 6S and appeared like the iPhone 5. In 2017, the rumor mill speculated that Apple may launch a successor for the iPhone SE, but it didn’t come true. In the previous month, the Cupertino company launched the 2019 iPhones and it appears that the iPhone SE 2 won’t be coming this year. Fresh information shared by industry expert Ming-Chi Kuo reveals that the iPhone SE 2 will be announced in the first quarter of 2020. A report from the last month by Nikkei had also claimed that the iPhone SE 2 will be made official around the same period.

Kuo has revealed that the iPhone SE 2 will be sporting a design similar to the iPhone 8. It means that the iPhone SE 2 won’t be featuring a notched screen like the iPhone X as some rumors had claimed. However, it could be equipped with thick bezels.

Apart from design, the specs of the iPhone SE 2 are also expected to resemble with the iPhone 8. However, it could be featuring the latest Apple A13 along with 3 GB of RAM. The handset could be coming with a 4.7-inch LCD display and a Touch ID embedded home button.

Kuo did not share any information on the expected pricing of the iPhone SE 2. However, he has claimed that the company will be selling 30 to 40 million units of the smaller iPhone in the coming year.

Currently, the iPhone portfolio includes iPhone 11 series, iPhone XR and iPhone 8 series. The company is selling the 64 GB iPhone 8 that features a 4.7-inch display with a price tag of $449. There is a possibility that the company may discontinue the iPhone 8 with the introduction of the iPhone SE 2. Probably, the 32 GB iPhone SE 2 could be priced around $399.

Kuo has speculated that Apple could be aiming the iPhone SE 2 to the existing users of the iPhone 6. The newly launched iOS 13 update is not available for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus owners. Probably, the company may want iPhone 6 owners to upgrade the Apple A13 powered iPhone 8 that will come preloaded with iOS 13.

The iPhone SE was announced in March 2017 and was discounted last year. The exact name of the successor of the iPhone SE is not confirmed yet. Probably, the company will hold an unveil event in March to announce the iPhone SE 2.

ZTE Blade 20 real images and user manual make the round via FCC listing

Some years back, it is a usual trend to see most phone makers imitate the design of the latest iPhone. That seems to have changed in recent times as Apple now looks like the one copying design features from Android OEMs. The latest iPhone 11 Pro came with a triple camera arranged in a square module that looks like a less impressive version of the Mate 20 Pro cameras. OnePlus 7T also came with a similar design. But it looks like that square camera module design will be adopted by many OEMs. An FCC listing said to be for the ZTE Blade 20 (Blade V20?) has appeared online with the rear panel housing a square camera module.ZTE Blade V20

TheFCC listing serves us some details of the Blade 20, including the user manual and the entire design. It is difficult making out the front design clearly but it looks like the phone has a notch. The rear design includes the square-shaped camera module housing three camera sensors and an LED flash. The module is nested at the top left corner of the panel.

The phone also comes with a rear fingerprint sensor which means it is not an LED panel with an on-screen fingerprint sensor. The power button and volume rockers are located at the right side of the display. The phone uses a USB-C port and retains the 3.5mm headphone jack.ZTE Blade 20

The Blade 20 is equipped with a large 5000mAh battery with support for 18W fast charge. Other specifications are unknown. We also don’t know when it will be launch but that should be far off.

Design

Nothing special in terms of design for the OnePlus 7T and neither for the Huawei Mate 30. They are classic smartphones with glass backs and a notched display, but they still come with premium materials, especially the Huawei Mate 30 which even boasts splash protection. But the champion of design is the Redmi K20 Pro due to its innovative pop-up camera, a notch-less display, and a glass back with suggestive light effects. Note that besides being more attractive, Redmi K20 Pro is also the most compact phone here, due to its smaller display.

Display

This year OnePlus 7T has put a lot of effort on the displays of its flagships. For the first time, OnePlus phones sport a 90 Hz refresh ratio delivering a smoother viewing experience. Further, the OnePlus 7T has richer colors thanks to the HDR10+ standard making it perfect for multimedia. The displays of Huawei Mate 30 and Redmi K20 Pro are not so different in terms of quality, and they are both inferior to the OnePlus 7T.

Hardware/Software

Not only the best display: OnePlus 7T also sports the most advanced hardware department if we consider speed and performance. Its main advantage is the presence of a Snapdragon 855+ chipset which is currently the most amazing chipset in the whole Android world. Further, Oneplus’ software optimization is unbeatable, so alongside the SD855+, it forms the perfect combination for power users. But Huawei Mate 30 provides an important feature: unlike the OnePlus 7T, it has optional 5G connectivity as its Kirin 990 chipset can be equipped with a 5G modem. OnePlus 7T and Huawei Mate 30 are powered by Android 10, while Redmi K20 Pro still comes with Android 9 Pie out of the box.

Camera

The most amazing camera on the paper belongs to the Huawei Mate 30 which supports 3x optical zoom, OIS and an amazing 40 MP main sensor with an f/1.8 aperture. But we are yet to test the camera performance of the OnePlus 7T thoroughly, and we may remain surprised if we think that it has a very bright focal aperture for its main sensor. On the paper, Huawei Mate 30 also has a better selfie camera, paired with a 3D TOF sensor for 3D facial recognition.

Battery

We believe that thanks to its bigger 4200 mAh battery and its very efficient Kirin 990 chipset built at 7nm+ by TSMC, Huawei Mate 30 will offer a long battery life. It is also the only device in this comparison to feature fast wireless charging and reverse wireless charging, while you can charge the OnePlus 7T and Redmi K20 Pro only through a USB-C cable.

Price

Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro is currently available for less than €400/$440, Huawei Mate 30 starts from €550/$605 and OnePlus 7T costs about $600/$545. Since it features a bigger battery, optional 5G connectivity, reverse wireless charging, an amazing camera setup, and splashproof protection, Huawei Mate 30 is overall my favorite one. But OnePlus 7T boasts a better display and performance, so it might be better for several people.

OnePlus 8 3D renders reveal punch-hole display; will have wireless charging too

The OnePlus 7T is still fresh out of the oven and yet to launch in many other markets but we already have OnePlus 8 leaks!!! Yes, 3D renders of the next OnePlus flagship have been posted on the web more than 6 months before the phone’s launch.

OnePlus 8 featured

The source, like all other 3D renders is OnLeaks and this time he has partnered with CashKaro. The renders are based on actual leaked dimensions and engineering drawings.

For the OnePlus 8, OnePlus is ditching the waterdrop notch of the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T in favor of a punch-hole. The display is curved on the sides like that of the OnePlus 7 Pro.

The phone measures 160.2 x 72.9 x 8.1 millimeters with a display that roughly measures 6.5-inches. The screen is definitely AMOLED and there is an in-display fingerprint scanner too. Oh! And of course, it has a 90Hz refresh rate since OnePlus already said that all its future phones will have 90Hz Fluid Displays.

On the rear, OnePlus is keeping the vertical camera setup of the OnePlus 7 but this time around there are three cameras just like we have on the new OnePlus 7T. Below the camera housing which protrudes is an LED flash and the OnePlus logo.

The OnePlus 8 has its power button and alert slider on the right while the volume rocker is on the left. The SIM tray is at the bottom. There are antenna lines at the top, sides, and bottom of the frame. The bottom speaker is also now a slit and not a grille. There is also no grille for the primary microphone.

It has also been reported that the OnePlus 8 will have support for Wireless Charging but we don’t know the power rating.

The OnePlus 8 will also have a Pro version but we also don’t know what it will look like. We presume it will retain the pop-up camera design but maybe come with four rear cameras. Both phones should come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 processor.

Do share your opinion about the OnePlus 8’s design in the comment box.

Warp Charge SOS is a “battery rescue” campaign by OnePlus in London

OnePlus has launched a hilarious but useful campaign in London. Called Warp Charge SOS, folks living in the city with a low cell phone battery have been asked to tweet at OnePlus UK using the hashtag #WarpChargeSOS with your location and a “rescue team” will come to charge your phone where you are. You can also post on their official Facebook account using the hashtag.

The rescue team will arrive in a fire truck with a large battery pack with multiple USB ports and proceed to “rescue” your phone.

Warp Charge SOS is a one-day event in London. After today, it will head to Amsterdam and Utrecht on October 5 and Helsinki on October 9.

Oh! And you don’t have to be a OnePlus user to enjoy the service, OnePlus says “all citizens are equal”. We only wish OnePlus made another power bank.

Warp Charge is OnePlus’ fast charging technology. There is Warp Charge 30 which charges at 30W (6V 5A) and there is the new and faster Warp Charge 30T which also charges at 30W but at 5V 6A and is 23% faster than Warp Charge 30.

Warp Charge 30 is available on the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition and OnePlus 7 Pro while Warp Charge 30T is available on the OnePlus 7T.

Maxis and Huawei collaborate for the provisioning of 5G network in Malaysia

Malaysia’s Maxis and Huawei Technologies Malaysia have sealed an agreement for the provisioning of the 5G service network in Malaysia. The signing ceremony that took place at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya today, was witnessed by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. This marks an important milestone for Maxis and it is a commitment to launch 5G in Malaysia together with its long-term network partner, Huawei.

As part of the agreement Huawei will be supplying 4G/LTE and 5G radio equipment and services to Maxis. Besides having access to 5G technologies, Maxis will be able to modernise its existing LTE network to be 5G ready. The local telco provider will also be able to facilitate the faster rollout of 5G services when the spectrum is available.

The telco also added that Maxis will also gain access to insights, standards, products and solutions that would make 5G easier to deploy and operate and to introduce new use cases in Malaysia. Huawei will be putting together a team of experts to support Maxis on a series of technical training programmes for the 5G network.

According to Huawei, they have been working together with Maxis over 10 years and have supported the telco to become the undisputed network leader in the country. Maxis is the first telco to bring 4G to the market and they have continued to invest significantly in this area to maintain its 4G leadership in terms of speed, performance and experience.

In February, Maxis and Huawei had signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on full-fledged 5G trials. Maxis then started its first 5G live trials in the country and participated in the MCMC #5GMalaysia showcase in Putrajaya. If all goes according to plan, the commercial 5G spectrum will be ready in the second half of 2020.

Xiaomi’s latest product is a Power Bank + Charger + Power Outlet

Xiaomi has a new product that pulls triple duty. It is a power bank, charger, and power outlet bundled into one product.

While we have seen power banks that double as chargers, one with a power outlet for electrical appliances is a new one. With this, you can make do with one wall outlet for all your devices – the charger itself is plugged into the wall and the USB ports charge your gadgets while your computer’s power adapter can go into the socket built into the charger.

Xiaomi Charger + Power bank + Power Outlet

The charger has three ports – a USB Type-C port with support for 18W fast charging and two USB-A ports. There is a built-in 5000mAh battery to charge your phone if you are on the go.

The charger has a brush metal finish with LEDs at the top to indicate the battery level. The power outlet is a 2-pin universal type and there is built-in protection against electric shocks.

The charger is priced at ¥159 (~$22). At the moment, there is no info on availability.

Call of Duty: Mobile breaks 20 million downloads and $2 million sales in under three days

Game maker Activision’s latest release Call of Duty: Mobile, made in conjuncture with Tencent Games, is the number one free app on the Google Play Store in as many as 33 countries, according to a Sensor Tower report.  The mobile incarnation of the Call of Duty franchise has already been downloaded over 20 million times.

“Call of Duty: Mobile has racked up more than $2 million spent on 20 million installs so far, according to Sensor Tower estimates. This includes Activision and Garena’s versions of the game,” claims the Sensor Tower’s report. This is a massive success for Activision, and it’s exactly what the company needed after a bumpy and unstable first quarter.

The game is being praised widely for its inclusion of multiple game modes. Call of Duty: Mobile has combined its signature gaming modes like Team Deathmatch, Search & Destroy, Domination, Frontline with the more contemporary Battle Royale, offering more range of choices than any other free free-person-shooter.

You can download the game for free on iOS, and Android devices. The game requires no money to play and does not even limit the number of rounds you can play between other content. It’s a surprisingly positive step for Activision who are infamous for not being the most gamer friendly when it comes to microtransactions and such.
