Dell files patent with USPTO for a foldable tablet device with narrow hinge

Foldable phones are becoming a thing in the tech industry. Not only have we seen foldable phones, but we may also soon get a foldable PC. US tech giant, Dell has filed a patent for a dual-screen Windows 10 device. The device will utilise a ‘narrow width dual axes hinge’ to smoothen the transition.Dell foldable PC

The patent was originally filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in February 2018 but was made public on August 8, 2019. The Dell patent is titled ‘Information Handling System Narrow Width Hinge’ and is for a 2-in-1 device with a narrow width dual axes hinge that rotationally couples the two portions of the device. The design also utilises a gear assembly to synchronize the motion of the dual axles at one end of the dual axles.

The patent application also includes a description of how it works thus, “A gear assembly synchronizes motion about the dual axles at one end of the dual axles, the gear assembly having brackets to couple to each housing portion. Torque brackets couple to the opposite end of the dual axles, each torque bracket couple to a housing portion and resisting rotation of the housing portions by generating friction at the axle.”

In addition, Dell claims the setup will come with a narrow bezel. The device’s narrow width of the hinge elements provides a narrow gap between displays so that visual information presented on displays has a more uniform appearance than would be presented with larger gaps.

Isreali-based Camera tech company accuses Apple of stealing dual camera patents

Apple has got another patent-infringement lawsuit under its sleeves. This time around, an Israeli-based camera technology company Corephotonics has filed a lawsuit against Apple claiming that the technology on the US company’s current dual-camera packing iPhones infringes several of its patents.iphone 11 xr

Apparently, Apple and the Isreali company has had contact with each other in the past. According to Corephotonics, the two companies have been in negotiations since 2012. All this while, the company had discussed the dual-camera modules in detail with Apple’s engineering team. The company even granted Apple access to the five-element telephoto lens back in 2012. Later on, in 2014, Apple got access to test boards and lenses and a black box simulation files for lens designs along with software simulator and system prototypes. The lawsuit alleges that this was crucial for developing the camera modules in today’s iPhones.

Apple’s first phone to feature a dual-camera setup, the iPhone 7 Plus was launched in 2016 without reaching a deal with Corephotonics. The Isreali company alleges that a high-ranking official even reached out to Apple once more to resume the negotiations of a partnership a month before the launch but that met a brick wall.

The first patent infringement lawsuit was, thus, filed by Corephotonics in November 2017 after examining the camera module of the iPhone 7 Plus and the iPhone 8 Plus. The camera-technology company claimed that the zoom technology used in those phones relies on Corephotonics’ patents.

EDITOR’S PICK: Huawei Mate X Release reportedly delayed to the end of 2019

A second lawsuit was filed on April 2018 after the launch of the iPhone X. The claim still remains the same. The latest lawsuit targets the iPhone XS and XS Max which still contain the controversial camera technology.

This could be a case of the biblical “hand of Esau but the voice of Jacob” as it could be recalled that Samsung acquired Corephotonics in a deal worth $150 million. However, neither Samsung nor Corephotonics released an official statement of the acquisition. Do we need to add that Corephotonics is the company behind OPPO’s 10X Zoom technology featured on the OPPO Reno?

Samsung will announce its game streaming service next month. It will be called PlayGalaxy Link but only a few details are known about the service. However, Samsung uploaded a short video demoing the service on its Korean Youtube channel.

UP NEXT: Patent shows LG’s next flagship may have a punch-hole display

Realme announces smartphone with quad camera, 64MP sensor

At Realme‘s launch event earlier today, the company announced a new upcoming device with four cameras on the rear. This device will go directly head-to-head with Xiaomi’s upcoming Redmi device with a 64MP rear camera. This one’s also different from the Realme device with a 48MP camera we had heard about from before, which means there’s a whole new slew of possible specs here.

The biggest selling point of this new device is still going to be the camera setup it has going on. One of these sensors is the currently hot 64MP ISOCELL GW1 sensor by Samsung, while the other three cameras consist of a super wide angle camera, macro as well a depth sensor. No info regarding the front camera, but that’s not really all that important.

Realme India CEO Madhav Sheth confirmed that the company would be launching three smartphone cameras before Diwali this year. These three new smartphones would be launched under the Realme, Realme Pro and Realme X series. Sheth also took a dig at Xiaomi and said that Realme is offering the world’s first hands-on experience rather than showing a slide presentation.

Of course, this hands-on experience comes with one big caveat, that being that it came under heavy wraps to basically disguise the device’s design and look. Despite that, we still get a fairly good look at the device’s camera capabilities as well as the phone’s model, that being RMX1921. This is interesting, as it could indicate that this is a new version of the Realme X.

Officially however, Realme has yet to announce anything else about the new device. We’re not sure if we’ll see this new device launch at Realme’s upcoming August 20th event, though it’s highly likely it will. There are three devices set for launch on that day, and it’s highly likely at least one of those will be this brand new device.

Whatever Realme has in store for us, we’re really eager to see it. The company has a stellar reputation of making some excellent mid-range devices, and so far they’ve yet to disappoint. It’s also great to see some true competition going on in the mid-range market, considering how it’s been getting somewhat stale in the past few years.

Huawei Mate X Release reportedly delayed to the end of 2019

Samsung Galaxy Fold’s recall is a very good example of why making foldables is not an easy task. Huawei was expected to beat Samsung to become the first top-tier company to release a commercial foldable smartphone in the market. However, according to a new report, that likely won’t happen as the Huawei Mate X foldable launch is said to be delayed till November 2019.

huawei MAte x outfold

Huawei Mate X has been one of the favorite foldables in the market especially because of its out-fold design. However, TechRadar learned at a Huawei press event in Shenzhen today that the company won’t be able to honor the earlier mentioned September release date. In fact, it is very unlikely that we would see the phone launch before November this year. The exact reason for the delay is not mentioned but it could be anything from production complications, additional testing, or even supplier issues due to the ongoing trade war.

However, the report states that the company is confident that the Mate X will be announced before the end of 2019. This time frame could be to ensure that the phone is available to purchase for the holiday season before the Chinese New Year, which kicks off early next year.

The report also adds that the company is planning an even better design for the next generation Mate X model. The new generation Mate X could launch as early as next year and could swap out the rear steel back for a glass-covered touch-enabled display. That would mean that the next generation Mate X could feature an all-display design with only a few bits of non-display elements.

However, it remains to be seen how the company plans to implement a glass design on a foldable smartphone. If you recall, the front display of the existing Mate X still features a plastic covering, mainly because plastic is flexible. So in order for the company to use a glass back with a display, it would have to make the glass foldable and it won’t be easy to make it mass production-friendly.

Another question is the durability of a glass-covered back instead of the current steel back. Techradar’s report mentioned that the company’s attempt to replace the current generation Mate X’s steel back with a lighter aluminum body failed as it wasn’t strong enough. So, it remains to be seen how Huawei plans to make a glass-covered design possible on the next-generation version.

The final version of the Mate X is said to come with a slimmer power button and an improved ‘Falcon-hinge’. Unfortunately, if you want to be an early adopter you will have to go for the Galaxy Fold because it will be available a couple of months before the Mate X.

Amazon leads the Smart Speakers market in Q2 2019: Strategy Analytics

Market research file Strategy Analytics has published a new report related to the global sales of smart speakers. It shows that the market keeps on growing and the sales of smart speakers reached 30.3 million units in Q2 2019.

Amazon continues dominating the market with 21.9 percent market share even though the company’s market share reduced from 29.1 percent in Q2 2018. The second and third position has been grabbed by Google and Baidu, followed by Alibaba and Xiaomi.

Global Smart Speaker Market Share

Even though Apple’s market share for the smart speakers increased 81 percent compared to the previous year, it has not yet captured significant market share and thus, it remains in the sixth place with 1.4 million units shipped.

Amazon managed to ship 6.6 million units while Google shipped 5.6 million units. On the other hand, China-based companies Baidu, Alibaba, and Xiaomi managed to ship 4.7 million, 4.3 million, and 3.4 million units respectively.

David Mercer, Vice President at Strategy Analytics said that the demand for smart speakers have shown a little sign of plateauing, even in more mature markets like the US where ownership has now reached 30% of households.

However, he adds that there’s a huge potential in untapped regions where local language support has been limited. He believes that the arrival of language localized devices in large markets like Russia, Mexico and Brazil will support further demand growth in the coming months and years.

Huawei’s super fast 30W Wireless Charger has just passed FCC

Yesterday we reported that Huawei Mate 30 series was likely going to feature support for ultra-fast 25W wireless charging. Today, Huawei’s new wireless charger (CP61) capable of delivering such high-speed charging has just been spotted on FCC. The certification website confirms that the upcoming Huawei wireless charger can support charging output up to 30W.

While 30W is even higher than what we reported yesterday, it looks like the actual charging speed could be less than the max speed mentioned in the document. The FCC listing reveals that the charger’s claimed 30W charging output has not complied to its tests. So, it is possible that the actual wireless charging speed is somewhere around 25W, which is what a Chinese blogger revealed yesterday.

At present, Xiaomi has the fastest charger on a commercial smartphone, with its Mi 9 supporting 20W wireless charging. Now that Huawei’s new CP61 charger has been spotted on FCC, expect the new wireless charger to be launched alongside the Mate 30 series.
