We are talking about the elegant Vivo iQOO and the Razer Phone 2 announced last year but still very actual. Who will win and which one has the highest value for money? Discover it with us by going through this specs comparison.

Design

If you do not like gaming-centric aesthetics and you want a device which looks more like a traditional phone, then choose the Vivo iQOO, or at least it would be my choice. Vivo iQOO has a more elegant and even a more lightweight body. It looks like a normal flagship phone, but it still has an RGB light strip and capacitive buttons at the sides which can be used as triggers. If you need the best build quality, go for the Razer Phone 2 as it is water and dust resistant. Last but not least, Asus ROG Phone 2 is the more ergonomic one for gamers as it features AirTriggers and supports a lot of external accessories for advanced players.

Display

Here it is a hard fight between Razer Phone 2 and Asus ROG Phone 2. The former provides a higher level of detail as well as a higher peak brightness, while the latter comes with a lower detail but a better color reproduction (thanks to the HDR10 technology and high DCI-P3 coverage) and 240 Hz touch sensing for a more reactive gaming experience. Razer Phone 2 even comes with better stereo speakers (on the paper) as they support Dolby Atmos and they come with THX-certified amplifiers. Speakers are very important if you want an advanced multimedia experience as well as immersive gameplay.

Specs & Software

The highest performances are undoubtedly provided by the Asus ROG Phone 2. Indeed, it comes with the strongest processor: the Snapdragon 855 Plus providing 15 percent better graphics performance compared to the Snapdragon 855 (found on the Vivo iQOO), as well as a higher 2.96 GHz clock frequency. Further, the Asus ROG Phone 2 is the only to sport 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage. It even comes with more advanced software as it is able to switch between a stock Android experience and a customized Android fork especially meant for gamers just like every ROG product.

Camera

Do not expect the best camera phone when you are about to choose a gaming phone. All of these handsets come with high-end cameras, but they are far from flagships. My favorite one is the Asus ROG Phone as it is the only to sport a 48 MP main sensor (besides its ultrawide lens), laser autofocus and super slow-motion at 480 fps (720p only). Further, it has a higher resolution for its front camera. But Razer Phone 2 still remains an amazing camera phone thanks to its OIS, a pretty nice 12 MP main sensor and an additional telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom. Vivo iQOO does not convince me at all when it comes to cameras, despite it has a triple setup.

Battery

With a mammoth 6000 mAh battery, Asus ROG Phone 2 is more like a power bank rather than a normal smartphone. It wins the battery life comparison and it is even able to charge other devices thanks to its reverse charging technology.

Price

Asus ROG Phone 2 debuted in China with a €900/$1000 starting price, Razer Phone 2 started from €850/$950 (but now it dropped a lot), and Vivo iQOO starts from just €400/$445. While Vivo iQOO has the highest value for money, Asus ROG Phone 2 wins the comparison due to its amazing display, performance and a way bigger battery.

Canalys reaffirms Xiaomi’s lead in India for the eighth consecutive quarter

A couple of days back, research firm Strategy Analytics released its research data for the second quarter of 2019. The data reveals a strong showing for Chinese phone manufacturer, Xiaomi as well as other positive outlooks. Another research firm, Canalys has released its own report which throws more light on the performances of the top OEMs slugging it out in India at the moment.

The analysis covers the second quarter of this year and it shows smartphone shipment slumped 0.5% as a result of the reluctance of feature phone users to upgrade to smartphones. The data again confirms Xiaomi still is the number one phone vendor in India in terms of shipment volume. The research firm also did point out that this is the eighth consecutive quarter the company is attaining this feat. Xiaomi shipped an estimated 10.3 million smartphones in Q2, slightly higher than the 9.9 million units it shipped in the same period last year.

Fellow Chinese phone makers, Vivo also recorded a massive increase in its sales by 63%. While Oppo and Realme, all BBK subsidiaries, equally grew significantly. Vivo flourished in the INR10,000 – INR15,000 price category, with impressive sales of the Vivo Y17 and Vivo Y91, bringing the Shenzhen company very close to Samsung.

EDITOR’S PICK: Xiaomi crowdfunds the Zhibai Three-layer Hydrating Hair Dryer for 799 yuan

Samsung still ranks as the second-biggest phone manufacturer in India but the firm’s shipments in Q2 2019 experienced a decline in sales and market share. Canalys says Xiaomi controls 31% of the market while Samsung manages to achieve a 22% market share.

Also worthy of note is that almost the entire smartphone market in India is controlled by the top 5 brands which accounted for 88% share of the market. This is a solid 8% increase YoY.

According to Canalys’ Reseach Director, the bulk of growth in the market comes from users who upgrade their entry-level to mid-range devices, priced between INR15,000 and INR20,000 (that’s around $200-$300). There are also speculations that manufacturers will stop producing phones for less than INR10,000 (about $150), so the market will get even more sluggish.

Official Pixel 4 video teaser confirms face unlock and Soli technology

Google is doing things differently this year with respect to the Pixel 4. Apparently, it wants to control the narrative. Earlier, it released an official render of the phone, shortly after a leak surfaced on the web. Today, it has released the first official video teaser for the phone.

The less-than 30-second video doesn’t give us a good look at the design of the phone but it does confirm some rumors about its features.

First, the Google Pixel 4 will support Face Unlock similar to that of the iPhone X series. An official blog post by Google reveals more about this and it includes a cross-sectional image that shows all the components in the phone’s big forehead.

Starting from the left, there is a face unlock IR camera, followed by the main front camera, and then an Ambient light/Proximity sensor. Then there is the speaker in the middle or audio port as Google calls it.

To the right of the speaker is the Soli radar chip which allows you to control the phone with no hands. In the video, it is shown that you will be able to swipe to change tracks. You will also be able to wave your hands to silence alarms and calls. If you look closely at the video, there is a small animation at the top of the screen that shows when you make a gesture with your hand.

That isn’t the only thing the Soli radar is good for. Google says the device turns on as you reach for the phone, allowing the phone to unlock “all in one motion”.

We presume what happens “behind the scenes” is the radar senses the movement of your hand and then wakes the phone which then activates the face unlock system. It scans your face and then unlocks the phone. It is a pretty fast process, so you shouldn’t notice any lag.

Side Note: We can’t possibly be the only ones who think the Soli radar will make its way into the next version of Google Nest Hub?

Next to the Soli radar are the rest of the face unlock system which includes a face unlock dot projector, another IR camera, and a flood illuminator. Google says it will not only unlock your phone but also authenticate you for payments and applications. It will be called “Motion Sense” and will not be available in all countries.

You don’t have to worry about security as the Pixel 4 will feature the Titan M security chip where your face data will always be stored. Never online where it can be accessed by someone else.

The Pixel 4 is shaping up to be an interesting device and we have a feeling it may even launch earlier than its predecessor.

Honor India confirms Android Q for Honor 8X and Honor 10

While Huawei has promised Android Q will be available for several of its devices in multiple instances, Honor seems to have only confirmed the update for the Honor 20 series. However, that isn’t the case. Honor India actually revealed over a week ago that two other phones will be getting the Android Q update. These two phones are the Honor 8X and the Honor 10.

Honor 8X

Both the Honor 8X and the Honor 10 were released last year and already have successors – Honor 9X and Honor 20 respectively. Both phones launched with EMUI 8.x based on Android 8.1 Oreo but have now been updated to Android Pie.

The evidence that both phones will get the update to Android Q are replies on Twitter to questions asked on if both phones will get the update.

The Honor 8X and Honor 10 should get the update along with EMUI 10 which should debut with the Mate 30 series later this year. However, the update may not arrive on both phones until much later.

There are still other devices that Honor hasn’t confirmed will get the Android Q update such as the Honor View 20 and the Honor Play. We will be assuming that since it has confirmed the update for the Honor 8X and Honor 10, their siblings – the Honor 8X Max and Honor Note 10 will also be updated to Android Q.

In a more recent tweet, Honor India also confirmed that the Honor 7X will receive an update that brings EMUI 9.0 based on Android Pie starting July 30.

How to customize OnePlus smartphone with Always-On display using Xposed Module?

OnePlus is always known for its hardware and the enhanced user experience. However, despite being among the best OEMs in maintaining the software – OxygenOS, it also carries some pitfalls. The OxygenOS falls short of some new and fancy features that the Pixel and some other devices carry. OnePlus always ensures bug-free experience before introducing any new feature on its customized Android ROM.

OnePlus also facilitate third-party development on its devices as it does not void warranty upon rooting the device. Due to such policies, OnePlus have always remained the most favorite OEM among third party developers for different MODs, themes, etc. Even, the users love to root their devices and later modify them for a customized experience. Similarly, we are sharing with you an Xposed Module, which will let you experience Pixel devices like Always-On display on the OnePlus devices.

The OnePlus devices carry inbuilt support for Ambient display and some other advanced display features, but the Always-On Display is missing. It was initially made available on some OnePlus devices but was later disabled. Always On Display (AOD) allows the device to keep displaying the essential information with minimal power usage.

A new Xposed Module can get you back the popular Pixel-like Always-on Display (AOD) feature. It will replace the Ambient Display option in the device. Most of the features such as the Now playing, Dash charging indicator, and the content display is working without affecting the battery usage.

If you’re ready to get this popular feature on your OnePlus device, then follow the steps below carefully.

Note: GizmoChina is not responsible for any damage to data and device. You’re performing the tutorial at your own will.

Note: The app is in the Chinese language; you might need assistance while performing the installation. We recommend using an App Translator to change the Chinese language to English.

Requirements

Steps to install Always On Display Module on OnePlus devices

  1. First, you will need to root your OnePlus device.
  2. Download and Install Xposed Framework, aka EdXposed with Rriru Core on your Device
  3. Install the OPAodMod APK v2.5 File from the above link.
  4. Now, Activate the module and reboot the device.
  5. Enjoy!!

Alternate Way:

  1. Root your device and install Magisk.
  2. Now install the AOD mod from Tai Chi repository.
  3. Activate it and enjoy!

Make sure you have enabled ‘touch to wake’ option in the OnePlus’ Ambient Display settings from the settings of the device. The AOD module also carries inbuilt display burn-in protection. For the in-display graphics, users need to use a Substratum theme to make it transparent. A similar output can be attained even using Magisk module to render transparent display on the in-display module.

The module can be modified to use either a 12-hour clock or the primary 24-hour clock.

How many of you were looking for the similar MOD on OnePlus devices? If you have any question or query, let us know via the comments form below.

The story behind XIDU laptop manufacturer (plus discount coupons)

XIDU is a fairly new laptop manufacturer that was established back in 2012 but the story goes even further back in 2009 when its two founders, Mr. Tang and Mrs. Zhou, met. As a matter of fact, it is a kind of a love story. This couple, eager to create a better future for themselves, resigned from the small companies they were working at and took off to start their own business.

XIDU Brand

In the early days of the company, they produced casings of laptops for other brands and sometimes they even had to deliver goods taking a crowded bus. However, the two people survived this difficult period with each other’s unconditional support and even got orders from big brands such as Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard. Committed to their original plan, they took the lead in the industry and established a long-term strategic partnership with many big brands. Despite their success, the couple never forgets where they came from, and they are easygoing and always get along well with the frontline employees.

XIDU BrandIn a meeting with some of their young employers, they heard them complaining about not being able to obtain a laptop for themselves as they were too expensive for them. This is the turning point for the company and the moment they decided to start producing their own laptops that would perform good but would be affordable for young people.

XIDU BrandBeing a rising brand in the industry doesn’t mean inexperienced as they gained experience in R&D and production of notebooks from contract manufacturing in the past. The founders collected the demands of many young people: they want a laptop that is cost-effective, portable, versatile and good-looking. Centering on these core demands, XIDU overcame all technical problems and finally made the first laptop that amazed all the young people in the factory. Moreover, as an original equipment manufacturer for big brand models like Microsoft’s Surface and Lenovo’s YOGA, they use the same equipment and mold. As a result, their laptops have the DNA of well-known models. Craftsmanship and design are close to perfect and nowadays, most of their models are attracting a great number of loyal fans worldwide.

You can find all of XIDU laptops on their official Aliexpress Store as well as their own store that ships in cooperation with Amazon. At their store, you can use coupon XIDU60
that will get you $60 off! Also, you can find them on Amazon US and Amazon UK.

Yesterday evening while interacting with Redmi fans, Xiaomi Product Director Wang Teng Thomas hinted that there will be a Redmi launch event in August. Xiaomi Group VP and Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing also revealed the wee hours of the day that the upcoming products will not disappoint the fans. Now, the rumor mill is speculating that the company may announce the Redmi Note 8 smartphone through its upcoming unveil event. Redmi event in August

Last week, Redmi had released a camera sample of its 64-megapixel smartphone. It is believed that the mysterious 64-megapixel Redmi phone could be equipped with Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 64-megapixel sensor that comes with pixel-merging Tetracell technology to capture 16-megapixel shots in low-light conditions by combining four pixels into one. There is a possibility that Redmi may announce its Redmi TV series for the Chinese market in August. The reason behind it is that a Redmi TV with model number L70M5-RA that is believed to be equipped with 70-inch 4K resolution display has been approved by the 3C authority of China. It is speculated that alongside it the company may also launch a 40-inch model that has a model number of L40M5-FA. Since Redmi TV has bagged 3C certifications, its arrival seems to be close at hand and it may announce it as early as next month.

Will Redmi announce its first Redmi TV or Redmi Note 8 or any other device in August? Let us know your thoughts by posting your comments below.

Frustration and anger mars Huawei Singapore $54 phone promo

Last week, Huawei announced a promo for its customers in Singapore. To mark the country’s 54th National Day, the Chinese phone maker announced it would sell the Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 for S$54 (~$39), less than a third of its S$198 (~$144) original price.

Huawei Y6 Pro 2019 Promo

The only requirement was that you had to be a citizen or permanent resident of Singapore aged 50 and above. You could also buy up to two phones.

We think Huawei put that age limit believing there would not be large crowds since those eligible are older citizens, but the company was in for a surprise.

Reports say people were already forming queues as early as 4 AM. However, only a few people were able to purchase as stocks ran out even before the stores were opened (that is weird). It turns out that only a few units (between 20 to 30) were available at each store.

Some customers who spoke to the press said they were informed by store employees that there was limited stock only after they had been on the queue for hours. Several customers at Huawei stores at the Jewel Changi Airport, VivoCity, NEX, and Tao Payoh, expressed their disappointment at the incident.

One 73-year old woman accused Huawei of “telling lies” as they didn’t initially inform the public that there will be limited stock. Another woman said she narrowly missed getting the phone. According to her, she was the 16th on the queue but after the turn of the 12th person, a member of staff announced that the phone was sold out.

We are sorry. Our outlets are oversubscribed. Please refrain from joining the queues further as stores are likely to…

Posted by Huawei Mobile on Thursday, July 25, 2019

The promo was originally supposed to run for three days but was only available on the first day. An apology letter by Huawei which was posted online and at stores said they were overwhelmed by the demand for the phone and apologized for not being able to provide enough units. It then added that there was no need to proceed to other outlets as they are also sold out.

Huawei later announced that it would be closing its shops early “for safety and security reasons”. Following the outcome of the first promotion, it also announced that it would be putting another promotion on hold until further notice. For this second promotion, buyers will be able to purchase the Mate 20 for S$568 (~414) instead of S$998 (~728).

Stores later re-opened for business on Saturday.

Choose a good looking phone with decent specs or choose a rugged phone with a battery that lasts “forever”? Such a struggle is easier to solve when the Blackview BV9500 enters the equation. The phone presented a great sales performance proving that the 10000mAh ultra-big BAK® battery and rugged specs instantly became a favorite among engineers, building workers, hikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts.

Also, the big battery capacity alone isn’t enough for users to prefer this over a more powerful competitor. Blackview didn’t back off and is bringing the BV9500 Plus to the market, an upgraded version of BV9500 that not only inherits the advantages of the old model but also improves its inadequacies.

To start, BV9500 Plus retains the killer feature of its predecessor which is the 10000mAh BAK® battery with standby time up to 40 days. In addition, there are 2 charging options now: the wireless charging and 12V/2A fast charging that is more than 2 times faster than normal 5V/2A charge technology. The huge battery can be charged within just 3.5 hours. As for the upgraded parts, the Blackview BV9500 Plus now comes with Helio P70 SoC together with the latest Android 9 Pie, offering a smooth multitasking experience.

The new device is planned to hit the market next week so stay tuned as it will definitely come with an offer! The old model’s production is now over and you can find it online while stock lasts.
