Samsung executive gets arrested over Biotech fraud case in South Korea

Prosecutors in South Korea have broadened an investigation into alleged fraud at Samsung BioLogics, which the company has disputed. As a part of this investigation, a Samsung executive was arrested overnight on allegations of ordering the destruction of evidence related to suspecting accounting fraud at a Samsung affiliate.

The executive is accused of ordering the destruction and manipulation of accounting data and other internal documents of Samsung BioLogics and Samsung Bioepis in 2018. The development was first reported by South Korea-based news agency Yonhap.

Samsung

As a part of this investigation, around eight employees of Samsung and its affiliates have now been arrested. This comes at a time when South Korean prosecutors broaden an investigation into whether top executives covered up evidence linked to alleged accounting fraud in 2015 at the company’s biopharmaceutical unit.

Last month, prosecutors raided a Samsung BioLogics factory and recovered a cache of hidden electronic devices. The prosecutors believe that the newly found electronic devices are linked to the case.

As per the regulators, Samsung BioLogics inflated the value of affiliate Samsung Bioepis by $3.9 billion. Critics have said the move artificially increased the value of parent Cheil Industries to enable an $8 billion merger with Samsung C&T, which held a key stake in Samsung Electronics.

At that time, Lee Jae-Yong, heir to the Samsung group, was a large shareholder in Cheil with a 23 percent stake but he did not own C&T shares and his direct stockholding of Samsung Electronics was less than 1 percent.

Prosecutors said that Ahn and Lee convened the May 5 meeting after the Financial Supervisory Service notified Samsung BioLogics and Samsung Bioepis of their suspected window dressing. They claim that since then, they masterminded the entire process of evidence destruction and manipulation at the two biotech companies.

Huawei labels report that it had reduced smartphones production as False!

The media was awash recently with a report that Huawei has cut down production of its smartphones due to uncertainty bothering the recent ban by the US government which was deferred for 90 days. The report quotes the South China Post as the source but Huawei has come out to state that the news is entirely fake. Huawei logo

Android Authority quotes the Chinese tech giant to have hinted in an email statement that it refutes these claims. “Our global production levels are normal, with no notable adjustments in either direction”, part of the statement read.

It is not uncommon for manufacturers to scale down the production of their smartphones, depending on the demand. The earlier report was embraced without a doubt due to the public perception that Trump’s ban will have a huge impact on Huawei’s phone sales. Already, some Huawei smartphone owners are reportedly selling their phones and prices of some of Huawei’s high-end phones like the P30 Pro have dropped drastically in recent times.

Since the ban was temporarily lifted, there is a ray of hope that a settlement could be reached between the US and China in the trade dispute that has Huawei in the middle as a pawn. Thus, it is no surprise the company is still talking tough. Huawei may be forced to cut down production at some point if the trade ban is resumed.

New patent exhibits two punch holes on a smartphone display

A smartphone bearing two punch holes in the display could soon be a reality, as the ZTE has patented the new layout. Some details related to the patent appeared on China’s patent registration authority – CNIPA. A pictorial depiction of the patent in the attached image clears all the questions. The new layout involves two circular punch holes side by side in the middle of the display.

zte dual

It would not be surprising if the company incorporates dual front-facing camera carrying a wide-angle and a depth sensor along with the primary sensor. There are fair chances for the addition of the in-ear speaker in any punch hole. However, minimal bezels are visible across all sides of the devices, whereas usual speaker grill on the bottom and physical buttons on either side are visible.

Placement for the vertical dual rear camera module is carved along with an LED flash. Considering the recent ZTE launches, the new design appears to be coming soon in the market. It will be good to see some variety after the single punch hole displays used in devices such as Galaxy S10, Honor View 20 and few others.

In Japan, a self-driving train suddenly changes direction injuring 20 persons onboard

Japan got a dose of software failure on one of its driverless train recently when an automated train suddenly started moving in the wrong direction and only stopped when it hit a buffer post after travelling approximately 25 metres (82 feet). The incident left a number of commuters with head wounds and serious injuries as the train was travelling at approximately six kilometres (3.7 miles) per hour when it hit the buffer post.

The five-car driverless train operated by Yokohama Seaside Line Co. had departed Yokohama’s Shin-Sugita Station at 8:15 p.m. for Namiki Chuo Station on the Kanazawa Seaside Line in Kanagawa Prefecture. The train reportedly stopped abruptly after leaving the station and then started reversing until it hit a buffer post. The impact injured approximately 14 of the 30 passengers who were on board at the time. Some suffered serious but non-life threatening wounds after they were thrown out of seats and hit their heads against handrails. Emergency services got to the scene within a few minutes and were able to treat victims at the station, while 15 of the injured were transported to the hospital. About 6 of the injured persons taken to the hospital for treatment were said to have serious injuries, including bone fractures.

The cause of the sudden change in direction is yet to be determined but train services have been stopped on the affected line as safety checks are being conducted and an investigation is ongoing by the Japanese National Transportation Safety Board. However, Yokohama Seaside Line Co. president Akihiko Mikami believes the incident may have occurred due to a glitch in the self-driving train’s operating system. The company is reportedly working towards determining the exact cause of the accident.

EDITOR’S PICK: Survey reveals China has more persons looking to adopt self-driving cars than the US

The Kanazawa Seaside Line is an 11-kilometre long automated guideway transit line that runs between Shin-Sugita and Kanazawa Hakkei Station. The self-driving trains and their speed are operated by an automatic train operation system (ATO), while the brakes are operated by an automatic train control (ATC) system. Staff monitor the operations from the headquarters at the Kanazawa Hakkei Station terminus. As at the time of the accident, three people were reported to be monitoring the train but none of them was able to notice the train had reversed until the emergency stop was activated by the collision. The company says this is the first incident of its kind to occur on the line since it first opened in 1989.

The train after it hit the buffer post

This brings to mind the stiff competition to ring automation to vehicle operations, a move spearheaded by Google, Uber and other start-ups. Autonomous vehicles are still under testing in some cities especially in developed countries like the US, Germany, China, Japan etc. The first recorded accident by a driverless car was that of Uber’s self-driving Volvo which hit a cyclist in Arizona last year. The incident was the first-ever pedestrian fatality involving a self-driving car and it brought to the fore the dangers inherent in deploying software to man vehicles. Investigations showed the car could not make out what the object in front was before the collision and even at that, the emergency brakes were disabled by Uber to avoid erratic responses. The driver on the wheels who was supposed to deploy the brake in an emergency only did that after the car had hit the lady fatally. Automated trains are easier to operate and have been in existence for decades but still, we hear of software failures. With the difficulties and complications associated with road transport, we wonder how easy it would be to develop a seamless system that won’t pose safety concerns.

Samsung and AMD announce partnership on mobile GPU

Samsung‘s Exynos processors use ARM’s Mali GPU but it is not as powerful as Qualcomm‘s own Adreno GPU or even Apple‘s new GPUs since it ditched PowerVR GPUs. However, that may change as Samsung Exynos and AMD have announced a multi-year partnership that will see Samsung license AMD’s Radeon graphics technologies for use in mobile applications including smartphones.

The partnership will see Samsung use ultra-low power high-performance mobile graphics IP based on AMD Radeon graphics technologies for use in its devices. Samsung will pay AMD technology license fees and royalties for the use of its technologies.

The announcement was made yesterday by both companies and it has got everyone pretty excited about the next generation Exynos chipsets.

Talking about the partnership, Inyup Kang, president of Samsung Electronics’s System LSI business said: “We look forward to working with AMD to accelerate innovations in mobile graphics technologies that will help take future mobile computing to the next level.” He also said the partnership will allow them to bring “disruptive changes in technology” and “groundbreaking graphics products and solutions for tomorrow’s mobile applications”.

The partnership is not only a win for Samsung but also for AMD as its Radeon graphics user base will now grow beyond PCs, game consoles, cloud, and HPC markets to include the mobile (phone) market.

There is no info on when we will see the first chipset based on the partnership but we expect the next Exynos flagship processor that will power the Galaxy S11 series to be the first.
