ZTE Axon S renders leaks: Horizontal slider, Triple rear cameras, Xenon flash and more

Don’t fancy the ZTE Axon 10 Pro? Then you may want to look forward to the Axon S, an upcoming flagship from the Chinese manufacturer which takes a familiar design and turns it on its sides. It also has some pretty amazing specs too. Renders of the phone have been leaked and we like what we see.

ZTE Axon S

Last year, manufacturers like Honor, Xiaomi, and Lenovo released phones with a slider design. If you slide any of these phones vertically downward, you are greeted with the front-facing camera(s) and sensors that will usually reside on the top bezel but are now behind the screen.

For the ZTE Axon S which also has a sliding mechanism, instead of sliding it down, you slide it to the right to see the front-facing cameras. There is also what appears to be touch-sensitive/capacitive controls probably for zooming in and out at the bottom. There is a chance the buttons are customizable, so you should be able to use them for volume controls or to adjust brightness.

[envira-gallery id=”241505″]

When you slide the phone open, it also reveals the triple rear cameras on the back of the device arranged vertically. Below the sensors is a Xenon flash and at the far bottom, it is written that the ZTE Axon S has 5x optical zoom, a 48MP main sensor and a secondary 19MP sensor.

The design of the Axon S is really cool as you can’t see any of the cameras when the phone is closed. The back is just a slate of black glass devoid of any markings while the front is a gorgeous AMOLED display with a thin bezel at the bottom. Under the display is the fingerprint scanner. The renders also reveal the Axon S will have support for 5G and a USB type-C port at the bottom.

Mi 9 SE to go on sale on March 19 alongside Mi 9

The Xiaomi Mi 9 SE was supposed to be available for purchase on Thursday, March 14, but it was canceled due to insufficient stock to warrant making it available for purchase.

Xiaomi‘s CEO, Lei Jun, announced yesterday that the phone will now go on sale on Tuesday, March 19. The Mi 9 SE will be available alongside the Mi 9 which already had its first sale but is still short on supply. There is no news yet of a new date for the Mi 9 Transparent Edition.

Mi 9 SE new sale date

He also said in the post that he will join the production line if they are not able to meet the target of 1 million units of the Mi 9 series within the first month.

The Mi 9 SE is the cheapest of the three phones in the Mi 9 series and also the least powerful. However, it does pack some punch too. It is the first smartphone powered by a Snapdragon 712 processor which is the most powerful mid-range chipset currently.

OPPO Reno has a screen-to-body ratio of 93.1%

The OPPO Reno is the upcoming flagship from the Chinese manufacturer, OPPO. Scheduled for an April 10 release, details about the phone have been gradually released by OPPO’s own VP ahead of the launch.

Oppo Reno

The latest info from the company executive is about the phone’s screen-to-body ratio. According to Mr. Brian Shen, the Reno will have a screen-to-body ratio of 91.3%. This is still smaller than that of the Find X which has a screen-to-body ratio of 93.8%.

OPPO Reno Screen-to-body ratio

In the original post he was quoted, he also revealed the OPPO Reno doesn’t have a hole on both sides of the phone. Unfortunately, he still didn’t reveal the phone’s screen size.

It has been reported that the phone will come in three variants – a lite version with a Snapdragon 675 processor, a high-end version with a Snapdragon 855 processor, and a Lamborghini edition with 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage and a 5000mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy A2 Core official render leaks

Samsung may never release an Android One phone but it seems to like the Android Go platform. The manufacturer already has two Android Go phones – the Galaxy J2 Core and the Galaxy J4 Core. They may soon be joined by a third member called the Galaxy A2 Core.

Yesterday, an official render of the upcoming phone was shared on the web yesterday. Unfortunately, there are no accompanying specs but we get to see what the phone looks like ahead of its release.

The Galaxy A2 Core has huge bezels surrounding its display just like the Galaxy J2 Core. Save for the position of the sensors and front-facing camera, they could pass for the same phone. However, things are different on the back.

Samsung has put just a single camera on the rear of the Galaxy A2 Core which isn’t a surprise. It is positioned in the top left corner and it shares the same housing with the LED flash. A few millimeters below the camera setup are two slits for the speaker. This design will mean sounds will be muffled when the phone is placed with the screen facing up.

The render shows the Galaxy A2 Core has an audio jack at the bottom to the right of the charging port. The phone will come in blue and black.

16 students arrested for playing PUBG Mobile in India despite the ban

It may sound impossible for a lot of people in 2019, but recently the state of Gujarat in India banned PUBG Mobile, so people in this state can actually face legal problems for playing a mobile game on their phone. The reason behind the ban is the game‘s impact on players behavior, conduct, and language. Even though there are other battle royale games even more used than this one, such as Fortnite and Apex Legends the ban only affects PUBG Mobile.

Despite the ban, 10 university students decided to keep playing the game and, according to the Indian Express, all of them were arrested for doing this. They were caught playing the famous battle royale a week after the ban in Gujarat. Fortunately, all of them were released on bail. According to a police official in the state, the game was so addictive that the accused students did not even notice his team coming to them, and that is how they caught them doing the illegal thing.

That is not the only arrest happened during the last days. After those ten students, six more students between the ages of 18 and 22 were arrested on Thursday for playing PUBG Mobile. They were released on bail just like the other ones. Do you think those people deserved the ban for playing a mobile game? Let us know your opinions by using the comment box below.

Snapdragon 865 will support new Qualcomm’s HDR10+ standard

Qualcomm’s Sr. Director of Product Management, Judd Heape, released a new interview to Android Authority in which she explained the most important upcoming implementations on Snapdragon chipsets. According to Judd, the upcoming Snapdragon 865 which will be the next flagship-grade SoC by the San Diego-based giant, will support Qualcomm’s own HDR10+ standard. In case you do not know, HDR10 was initially produced by Samsung and Amazon in 2017 and after that, Samsung developed HDR10+ for even better image reproduction.

Now, Qualcomm is working on its own take on HDR10+ which will debut with its next flagship chipset. Judd Heape referred to the new processor by calling it the Snapdragon 865, but she did not confirm that Snapdragon 865 will be the final name of the chipset. It is the natural successor of the Snapdragon 855, but its name may still be subject to changes. Note that the Snapdragon 855 found on the latest flagships unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona already supports HDR10+, but we are talking about Samsung’s one and not about the technology which is being personally developed by Qualcomm.

So, the new standard from the San Diego giant will most likely compete with Samsung’s technology. Besides Snapdragon 865 and its support to HDR10+, Judd Heape also talked about camera resolutions support of its existing Snapdragon chipsets in the same interview. As you probably know if you are a mobile tech-addicted, Qualcomm recently updated the specs sheet of several existing Snapdragon chipsets by adding the support to cameras up to 192 Megapixels.

Judd explained that this entry in the specs sheet was not added before because the highest resolution mode does not support 30 fps and 60 fps, as well as multi-frame noise reduction and zero shutter lag technology (also known as ZSL). But since several manufacturers started equipping their devices with sensors boasting very high resolution, Qualcomm decided to let users, manufacturers, and developers know about the support to cameras with higher resolutions.

Samsung starts mass producing 12 GB LPDDR4X RAM modules for smartphones

We started seeing 12 GB RAM modules on mobile phones in 2018 and Samsung seems intentioned not to waste time with their production. The Korean giant started mass producing 12GB LPDDR4X DRAM modules thought for flagship smartphones with the most advanced hardware and technologies. The new modules are meant to be used on devices which support the most revolutionary technologies in the mobile sector, such as camera modules with several sensors, 5G connectivity, artificial intelligence and more. The modules are built with a 10 nm-class (1y-nm) production process and they will come with a data transfer rate up to 34.1 GB per second.

Another advantage of the new 12 GB LPDDR4X RAM modules which just entered mass production is the lower power consumption: they will be a lot more power efficient. Samsung also reduced the thickness of its modules: the new ones are just 1.1 mm thin and this allows to save space in order to provide bigger batteries and a better design for flagship phones. Thanks to the new modules, users will benefit from better performances in multi-tasking and a  faster search response. Before these modules, Samsung also started mass producing eUFS 3.0 storage with capacities up to 512 GB, that is another great innovation in the mobile sector and it represents a further improvement to performances.

The 12 GB LPDDR4X RAM modules were projected with a combination of six 16-gigabit LPDDR4X chips into a single unit. Besides starting the mass production of the new modules, Samsung will increase the supply of these modules alongside 8 GB LPDDR4X DRAM modules by 300 percent in the second half of 2019 because it already predicts a strong demand for these chips. Do you think 12 GB RAM modules are useful on a mobile phone or the actual devices with up to 8 GB of RAM offer enough memory and storage for your needs?

Two Reno smartphones by Oppo certified by 3C

Oppo is set to unveil the first smartphone from its new Reno line-up on April 10. Meanwhile, the Chinese company is completing the last steps necessary to let the handsets from the new series hit the market. One of these is the certification from China’s 3C which decrees products as suitable for the final consumers. Today, two Oppo phones from the new Reno series received the official certification from CCC with the model numbers PCAM000 and PCAT00. The two Reno devices by Oppo are expected to sport the Snapdragon 710 chipset by Qualcomm.

It is one of the best midrange SoCs from the San Diego giant and it is an octa-core chipset running at a max frequency of 2.2 GHz, paired with an Adreno 516 GPU. The two variants come with a 48 MP main sensor for the main camera setup on the rear side. 3C revealed that the two handsets certified come with a 20W fast charging technology (5V 4A) which is not Super VOOC as this technology comes with a higher power. According to reports, the Oppo Reno line-up will be composed of at least six variants. Among these models, there will be a Lamborghini Edition as well as a 5G Edition with the support to 5G connectivity. Unlike the models certified by 3C, these two variants will come with flagship-class specifications.

They are expected to boast the Snapdragon 855 chipset (which will be paired with the Snapdragon X50 5G modem on the 5G Edition), up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of internal storage. The rear camera should come with the new 10x lossless zoom technology, and among the specifications, there should also be a 5000 mAh battery with the support to Super VOOC 4.0 fast charging technology with a max power of 50W. Last but not least, these devices may sport a Dynamic AMOLED display with HDR10+.

Among other things, Lei Jun stated that 5G+AI+IoT will constitute the future super Internet and that was the strategic direction of Xiaomi’s AioT. The CEO is reported to have said that Xiaomi is looking to pioneer the trend of offering 18 months warranty for smartphones instead of 12 months.

Qualcomm Chipsets already support 192-Megapixel sensors; Phones with 100MP and 64 MP cameras coming soon

Qualcomm is a major smartphone chipset maker, and it runs on 65% Android devices. Recently, Qualcomm launched its new flagship chipset – Snapdragon 855 carrying improvements over its predecessor. The San Diego, California based company is a key player enabling improved photography experiences over smartphones. However, recently company claimed in updated specification sheets that their chipsets already support 192 Megapixel cameras.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 675
At first, no one believed in new specifications and termed it as a marketing gimmick. Today, over a telephonic session with media, Judd Heape, Senior Director of Product Management acknowledged the change. He explained that the existing chipsets already support 192 megapixels, but without features like MFNR (multi-frame noise reduction) and ZSL (zero shutter lag). In other words, if manufacturers want to utilize noise reduction and zero lag features, they have to limit hardware at 30fps or 60fps modes with the lower resolution.

“We updated the specifications to show what the world’s largest image sensor that can be connected to Snapdragons,” Heape asserted during his over an hour-long conversation with Indian tech journalists.

It means chipsets such as Snapdragon 670, Snapdragon 675, Snapdragon 710, Snapdragon 845, and the Snapdragon 855 also supports 48 MP cameras without any software/hardware upgrade.

Currently, no manufacturer supports 192 Megapixel sensor, but as according to Judd, higher than 48 resolution would be a reality soon. Some OEMs are working to introduce smartphones carrying 100MP and 64MP camera sensors by this year. He didn’t reveal any additional details such as launch date and names of OEMs.

Talking about the HDR10+ video recording future perspectives, Judd added, Qualcomm is working to bring it on Snapdragon 865. Although, the company’s PR team quickly stated that the name Snapdragon 865 hasn’t been finalized.

iPhone interest in China down by 50% reveals search trends

Apple is struggling to find new iPhone users in China. It appears Chinese lost interest in the Cupertino giant’s smartphone, as fewer consumers search for it, reveals Longbow research. As per the Chinese search engine, Baidu, the search trend for iPhone dipped 48 percent last month. It’s the fifth consecutive month of decline in the search queries.

iPhone Xr

Baidu search data directly corresponds to the actual smartphone market’s demand. In over last four years, Apple iPhone year-on-year sales correlates upto 74 percent with the Baidu’s search data. Moreover, the data shows 82 percent correlation with iPhone shipments into China. “Multiple iPhone price cuts did not stop China iPhone search trends from weakening further while February supplier sales were abysmal,” Longbow analyst Shawn Harrison said in a note Tuesday.

Apple iPhone lost 5% share in China year-on-year while witnessing 30% decline from January. Although the search isn’t the accurate tool to measure demand but a huge drop is somewhat reasonable. It correctly depicts Apple’s reducing popularity in China.

The situation is alarming as even multiple rate cuts by Chinese retailers haven’t shown any sign of improvement. However, official numbers are not present, and its quarterly reports are scheduled for 30th April. We have to wait for the official figures to know the actual situation of the company in China.

Longbow kept Apple’s rating neutral and expected $11 share price in this fiscal year. “We currently do not see any catalysts near term to drive significant EPS upside,” Harrison said.

Currently, Apple needs to refocus on its plans in China. Otherwise, it would be difficult to get any boost in sales by 2019. Users are moving towards newer smartphones such as Galaxy S10.

Apple is scheduled to announce new TV and subscription news service at an event on 25th March.

The search engine giant is expected to follow in the footsteps of Samsung and Huawei that introduced their foldable phones during the recently concluded MWC (Mobile World Congress) that took place in Barcelona. In other words, Google isn’t willing to be left out.

The aforesaid patent gives us a brief glimpse of a smartphone that seems to bear a striking resemblance to the 2019 version of the Motorola RAZR. Aside from that, the phone seems quite familiar to the Galaxy Fold from Samsung.

As required by the latest technology, there’s a visible gap between the two halves of the phone. It is worth noting that Google has neither confirmed nor denied that it is currently hard at works on a phone that folds in half. Moreover, leaked patents are highly unlikely to materialize so readers are advised to take these rumors with a grain of salt.

Nevertheless, foldable mobile devices are expected to take the smartphone realm by storm and there are no prizes for guessing that Google is in no mood to be left behind in terms of technology.

Given that Android Q beta shows how the company conceives software experience for a foldable smartphone, we could see it reveal a Pixel Foldable smartphone in the near future. More shreds of information are likely to surface online soon so stay tuned in here for more news and updates about Google’s foldable phone.

Google Pixel 4 Leaks: Four Cameras And a Hole in the Display Likely

While Pixel-branded smartphones from Google might have not garnered skyrocketing popularity among smartphone lovers, they have without an inch of doubt managed to build a loyal fanbase. As if that weren’t enough, the brand’s fan base is growing bigger every year.
One of Pixel phone’s USPs includes the fact that the latest and the best Android features are always rolled out for the Pixel phone owners ahead of other top-branded smartphones.

Aside from an impressive overall performance, Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones house the best camera available in the American market at the moment. Moreover, the phone boasts Google’s unparalleled low-light photo enhancing “Night Sight” feature.

Despite the lack of an official confirmation about the company’s next-generation Pixel phones including the Pixel 3 Lite, which is slated to hit the store shelves ahead of Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, the rumor mill is churning all sorts of speculations around the company’s next-generation Pixel phablet, which has surfaced online in the form of a new leak.

It is no secret that Google still has a lot of catching up to do in terms of smartphone design trends. On Thursday, a Slashleaks user shared a sketch of what is touted as Google’s new Pixel 4 XL design. The design in question seems to retain the company’s overall design identity from the well-received Pixel 3 lineup, however, it houses a dual-lens camera at the back.

Up front, the phone sports an all-screen design that comprises a dual-lens hole-punch camera, just like the one found on the recently unveiled Galaxy S10+. You can check out the image below:

The sketch is quite simple and there have been similar sketches leaked for a slew of other equally anticipated smartphones in the past.

We can clearly see artifacts encompassing the “G” logo and also around the front as well as rear-mounted camera components. Regrettably, images of the real Pixel 4 XL prototypes aren’t expected to make appearances on the internet anytime soon. If Google sticks to the tradition, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL could hit the store shelves in October this year.
