GIONEE may have sunk into bankruptcy due to founder’s gambling habits

A recent report by Chinese blog iFeng has revealed that judicial proceedings towards obtaining bankruptcy protection for Chinese smartphone maker Gionee are moving forward due to a ruling from Shenzen intermediate people’s court. Sources familiar with the case hint that the proceedings will lead to a complete overhaul of the company.Gionee S11 Lite and Gionee F205 launch

Gionee’s financial woes is traced to huge debt incurred as a result of the gambling and extravagant spending problems of the company’s founder and chairman Liu Lirong. The present case at the court is as a result of the filed bankruptcy liquidation application by Huaxing bank against the company. The case also extends from the financial problems the company had in year 2017. The company’s chairman recently admitted to having gambling aaddiction.Company executives later disclosed details of the  founder’s gambling activities stating that as much as $143.8 million of the total $2.45 billion in the company’s debt was as a result of his gambling. This is the money owed to an approximate 648 creditors. Mr. Liu Lirong extravagant spending may parallel to an amount closer to $1 billion according to a region report. While the chairman refuted the assertion, it has led to further hypothesis that gambling is not the only reason behind the missing money.

Some unsubstantiated claims have indicated that the money was deliberately ‘lost at the casino’ so as to channel the money outside China for Mr. Liu Lirong’s personal use. Allegations from this claims could result to further problems for both the founder and the
company, if there is any proof to confirm them. To avoid liquidation in reference to the case in court, Gionee has recently employed some restructuring expert. The chairman has given some hope that there will be resolution in the
next few years. However, if there is any claims for more recent accusations against Mr. Liu Lirong then there is
every tendency Gionee will be liquidated in order to pay back debtors. It’s more likely that the chairman will be forced to resign, since reorganization of the company seems to be the likely outcome.

If we had to choose the best value for money smartphone by Lenovo which hitten the shelves in 2018, we would definitely say Lenovo S5 Pro. A few days ago, the Chinese giant launched a new variant of the handset: the Lenovo S5 Pro GT, which distinguishes from the original one for having a better chipset. For this reason, this device may become one of the Chinese best-sellers in 2019. But it has some rivals which will not make it easy, such as the new Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 and Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite. Check out the following specs comparison if you want to learn more about them.

Design

In our opinion, Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite has an overall better look. It comes with a glass back and an aluminum frame, as well as a very high screen-to-body ratio thanks to the small notch. And it is also the thinnest device. The second spot in the ranking goes to Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 and its reflective glass back available in two hues. Lenovo S5 Pro GT is a full metal unibody phone, so it has a lower-end design and it is not as attractive as its concurrence. Further, its notch is bigger, but there is to say that it includes an IR face recognition system and it is hard to find such a sensor on mid-rangers.

Display

On the multimedia side, Lenovo S5 Pro GT is a slightly more valid device. It comes with an above-average display as well as stereo speakers, so watching videos and movies is a more catchy experience with this phone. Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 and Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite have the classic displays that you can find on most of mid-rangers.

Specs & Performance

The only thing for which these devices are not different is the hardware side. They all come with the Snapdragon 660 SoC by Qualcomm and up to 6 GB of RAM. Excluding Asus Zenfone Max Pro (M2) which sports 64 GB, each of these devices has up to 128 GB of internal storage, but the M2 comes with a micro SD dedicated slot which allows using both dual SIM and micro SD slot at the same time.

Camera

If we consider the whole camera departments of these handsets, Lenovo S5 Pro GT is the most complete one. It comes with an above-average dual setup on the back and a dual camera even on the front side. While on the back there is a secondary telephoto lens with optical zoom, the front has a secondary depth sensor. Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 and Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite are more or less at the same level, with their advantages and disadvantages. I would pick the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite because I liked more its photos with good light conditions, while Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 is better with low light.

Battery

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 is the champion of battery life and one of the longest lasting phones in the whole Android market, thanks to its 5000 mAh battery. Lenovo S5 Pro GT is great as well, but it has only 3500 mAh and it does not reach Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 in any scenario. Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is the worst one with a 3350 mAh battery, but it supports Quick Charge 3.0 so it is able to charge very fastly.

Price

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 recently hitten the Indian market with a starting price of $270, Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite costs about €200 in Europe and Lenovo S5 Pro GT debuted with a €200 price tag. I would personally choose Lenovo S5 Pro GT because of its great cameras, stereo speakers, IR face recognition and some other strong points I did not see in other handsets.

OnePlus 6T DxOMark revealed, praised for its great dynamic range

DxOMark, the website known for its performance ratings of the cameras of smartphones and other devices has released its result and a full review for the OnePlus 6T. The 6T may have the same camera configuration as the OnePlus 6 but DxOMark says software changes have resulted in improvements over its predecessor.

OnePlus 6T Purple

The OnePlus 6T has dual rear cameras – a 16MP 1/2.55″ sensor with a f/1.7 aperture and a 20MP 1/2.8″ sensor with a f/1.7 aperture. The main sensor has OIS but the secondary sensor doesn’t have any stabilization.

DxOMark praised the OnePlus 6T for its wide dynamic range and its preservation of colors in almost all conditions. However, the device didn’t perform well in zoom shots. In terms of video performance, the OnePlus 6T did better than its predecessor as it scored a total of 91 points as against the OP6’s 87. DxOMark says its overall score should be higher but it doesn’t handle noise well, not even as good as the OnePlus 6.

OnePlus 6T DxOMark low-light

The OnePlus 6T’s photo score is 101. It captures detail well in both light and dark areas and DxOMark says its capturing of background details is on the same level as that of the iPhone XS and better than that of the Samsung Galaxy Note9. It also captures better images in extreme low-light (1 lux) than both phones.

OnePlus 6T DxOMark zoom

Where the OnePlus 6T scores low when compared to both phones is in its zoom shots. Its lack of a telephoto lens greatly affects detail level as can be seen in the image above.

Mid-Range Sony Xperia XA3 Variants certified before a possible CES 2019 Launch

Sony’s smartphone game hasn’t been impressive in the past couple of years. The company is still making flagship phones like the Xperia XZ3 powered by Snapdragon 845, but its mid-range models are likely doing better than its top-end ones. The company is expected to update its mid-range Xperia XA lineup at CES 2019 and before its launch, a couple of models seems to have been certified on EEC (Eurasian Economic Commission).

Sony Xperia XZ3

Three Sony models, namely I4113, I4213 and I4312 were spotted on EEC a couple of days back. Going by their naming scheme, they seem to be a part of the Xperia XA3 lineup. If you remember, the model number H4213 belonged to Xperia XA2 Ultra and the H4113 was the model number for Xperia XA2. Given that every year, Sony moves on to the next letter in the alphabet series (G in 2017, H in 2018 and hence, I in 2019), these models could very well be the upcoming Sony Xperia XA3 models. We saw the XA2 models back at CES 2018, so the new models could debut in January next year at CES 2019. There’s one more model with the number, I4312 but we are not sure of the identity of this particular one.

Sony Xperia XA3

We haven’t got a lot of details about the Xperia XA3 yet, except for a possible render from onleaks. We should also meet the Xperia XZ4 flagship in the next few months.

Meitu V7 will get a Special Tonino Lamborghini Edition featuring Triple Front cameras

Meitu might be a lesser known company outside of China, but the company made headlines a few weeks back when it announced a strategic partnership with Xiaomi (full details here!) wherein it granted an exclusive global license to the popular smartphone maker to use its branding and certain technologies in relation to all of its upcoming smartphones, except one — the Meitu V7. At that time, we had only seen this device in TENAA images, as it was yet to be revealed, but today, the company decided to officially announce its existence.

Meitu V7 teaser 01

The new teaser poster for the Meitu V7 confirms the triple front camera design that we had earlier seen in its TENAA leak. Meitu’s smartphones are all about selfies and beautifying features, so it’s not surprising to see that they decided to add three cameras right on top of the display. The company continues to keep its signature ‘V’ styling on the new model as well, and the back is adorned by leather with dual cameras. Like most other Meitu products, the V7 is also designed to stand out of the crowd in terms of its design. Nothing is subtle about the device and if you take a look at the earlier released TENAA images, the design is quite flashy.

Meitu V7 Tonino Lamborghini edition

Meitu also reveals that the V7 will get a special Tonino Lamborghini edition. Before you get too excited know that it’s not another partnership with a sports car maker. Unless you know the difference between Tonino Lamborghini and Automobili Lamborghini brands, it’s very easy to mistake that this is a partnership like OPPO’s Lamborghini edition or OnePlus 6T’s McLaren edition. However, Meitu V7’s partnership is with the luxury accessories maker, also known for its luxury smartphones (remember the Lamborghini Alpha One?). We still don’t know how this special Tonino Lamborghini edition will come to be, but we’ll hear more details in the coming weeks.

Unfortunately, Meitu hasn’t given us a release date for the V7 yet. So, all we can do is wait for more details. The phone is likely going to be placed as a high-end offering in its lineup, so expect a flagship chip like the Snapdragon 845 on board. You can get more details from the TENAA listing from here.
