The Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition was announced yesterday through a dedicated launch event in Shanghai. The original Vivo NEX had impressed the smartphone fans with its notch-less display design. As the name goes, the Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition has arrived with two screens. It is packed with powerful specs, but the amazing dual display design of the smartphone is the thing that sets apart from other flagship phones. A Twitter user has shared hands-on images of the Blue and Red color variants of the Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition.

There is a 6.39-inch Super AMOLED display sitting on the frontside of the Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition. The company claims that the front display offers 91.63 percent screen space. It features a 2.5D curved glass over it, but the exact edition of the protection glass is not known. The front screen supports 19.5:9 aspect ratio and full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. Underneath the front screen is an in-screen fingerprint scanner.

Since the upper bezel is quite thin, sensors like proximity and ambient sensors are placed under the display. The smartphone does not feature a front-facing camera. OnePlus 5G phone release date will be set before the end of May 2019

Many smartphone OEMs including OnePlus are expected to release 5G smartphones in the coming the year. Recent reports have suggested that the 5G phone from OnePlus will go official in early 2019. In a recent interview with CNET, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau revealed some information on the upcoming OnePlus 5G phone. He also confirmed that the company will be releasing its first 5G smartphone before the end of May 2019.

In the previous week, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei had said in an interview to the The Verge that the reason why OnePlus is launching a 5G phone in early 2019 is that it wants its engineer to work on the nuances of 5G that will help in releasing 5G smartphones in future. Even Lau is not expecting huge sales from its first 5G phone since the 5G technology will be in early stages in the coming year. However, the market for 5G phones is expected to grow significantly in the coming year.

The company is planning to launch its first 5G smartphone before the end of May 2019. According to Lau, by becoming one of the first companies to launch a 5G phone, OnePlus can develop a premium 5G smartphone with best user experience.

As far as pricing of the phone is concerned, the upcoming OnePlus 5G smartphone may cost $200 to $300 more than the OnePlus 6T since it will include costlier 5G components. Lau has confirmed that the first OnePlus 5G phone won’t be called OnePlus 7. It will end up as a product from a new lineup. At the fringes of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Technology Summit in Maui last week, PCMag caught up with OnePlus CEO Pete Lau who granted the tech blog an interview. The chat which was done using an interpreter centred on the company’s plans going forward.

Pete Lau, during the chat, reeled out some interesting details about the company’s latest flagship OnePlus 6T. He also delved into the upcoming 5G phone, and other new OnePlus devices. Lau revealed that its latest flagship OnePlus 6T which was launched in the US in partnership with TMobile has had impressive sales which at present is 249% more than the OnePlus 6 sales in the US. The interview was apparently to promote the OnePlus 6T Mclaren edition which is now official with a whopping 10GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and a 30W charger that gives a day’s firepower in just 20 minutes. Amazing! The device also comes with a $699 price tag as against $549 for the OP6T.

The CEO also spoke on the removal of the 3.5mm audio jack on the OP6T which he admitted was a difficult decision to take. He also hinted that the audio jack was removed to make way for a bigger battery. The OP6T battery is bigger than that of its predecessor. Here comes the cheering news for those who would love to see OnePlus release a small display smartphone. Pete Lau also disclosed that he would love to make a smaller phone, but that battery capacity is the number one reason why the company is yet to do that. Lau admits, “I see a lot of demand for [smaller phones]. But looking at the industry, the technology of batteries hasn’t changed too much over all these years. If we can solve the battery problem, we would definitely make a smaller one. No doubt, the company isn’t going to be releasing a smaller phone anytime soon.

5G technology was yet another interesting topic that was discussed during the interview. According to Lau, the OnePlus 5G phone will be based on sub-6GHz frequency bands, which Lau says are easier to build. This will likely keep users in the US locked on T-Mobile which is the only carrier that uses the sub-6 wave. Lau stated, “The whole industry knows that it’s easier to build for sub-6 than for millimeter wave”. Both Verizon’s and AT&T’s 5G networks will have mmWave builds. However, he equally stated that by next year the company will find a solution for millimeter wave. Other aspects that were also discussed include beefing up security for its users’ data. He also threw up the possibility of having new camera capabilities on its next-gen model. He also restated that OnePlus will be releasing a smart TV but “not until it is ready”.

Design

Innovative aesthetics in each case, you should make your tastes decide. Vivo NEX Dual Display and Nubia X both come with two displays, one on the front and one on the back, so most of the surfaces of these phones are covered by a screen. Oppo Find X has a slider design with motorized parts and it features a slightly higher screen-to-body ratio. But on the other hand, it is a thicker device. All of them have an aluminum frame and a glass back, but Oppo Find X should have more resistant glasses as they feature the Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

Display

Vivo NEX Dual Display offers an overall better display quality, not only because it has two displays, but also because both of them are AMOLED panels with a Full HD resolution. It boasts brilliant colors and a high level of detail. Nubia X has two displays but their quality is not so high as the first is an above-average but still, midrange-class LCD display and the second is an OLED panel but its resolution is just HD. Oppo Find X has a very nice and even bigger screen, even though it remains far from the best flagships’ displays. Oppo Find X and Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition have an in-display fingerprint reader, while Nubia X has two side-mounted fingerprint readers.

Hardware/Software

All come with an octa-core Snapdragon 845 flagship SoC by Qualcomm, but given that Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition has 10 GB of RAM, it is the most interesting device when it comes to pure performance. But Nubia X comes with more internal storage: up to 512 GB. Noone of these handsets integrates a micro SD slot to expand the internal storage, while all of them come with a customized UI based on Android. However, Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition is the only one based on Android Pie out of the box. So, overall, if you care about software and performance, Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition is the best.

Camera

Talking about cameras, on the paper Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition is again the winner with its 12 MP triple camera able to calculate distance and depth. Nubia X comes at the second place, but note that Nubia X and Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition do not feature a front camera. Thanks to their dual displays, you can use their rear cameras for selfies too. Oppo Find X is the only to sport a front sensor and it is one of the best selfie cameras out there. But the rear camera is a bit disappointing, that is why I would pick Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition.

Battery

Nubia X has the biggest battery and, thanks to its secondary HD+ OLED display on the back it is able to consume less energy. That is why it is the winner of the battery comparison. The second place goes to Oppo Find X and its 3730 mAh battery which integrates the fastest charging technology. Even though it comes at the last place, Vivo NEX Dual Display still comes with a more than sufficient battery which should provide a decent battery life in every scenario.

Price

Prices are the weak point of innovative devices, but it is not the case of the Nubia X which was launched with a starting price tag of just $510/€450. Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition debuted with prices of about $720/€635 and $871/€770, but you can already grab a unit of the Oppo Find X for less than $680/€600 in the global market. Vivo NEX Dual Display is still not on the shelves as it was announced earlier today. Vivo NEX Dual Display is definitely the best smartphone of the trio and it wins this comparison, but if you want to save money Nubia X will be more than sufficient for all your needs.

The Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition launched today as the first Vivo phone with 10GB of RAM. A Geekbench result has revealed it won’t be the only one for long.

An unknown Vivo phone that also has 10GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 845 processor has been benchmarked which confirms it is a flagship. The device was seen on the benchmarking site yesterday under the name “vivo vivo 1813” which is quite different from the benchmark name of the Vivo NEX Dual Display – vivo V1821A.

However, the model number is similar to that of the Vivo Z3i (V1813A) and Vivo Z3 (V1813BA). So does this mean this a pro version of the Vivo Z3? Seems very likely. The Z-series was introduced this year and has the Z1, Z1 Lite, Z1i and Z10 as members including the aforementioned Z3 and Z3i.

The phone scored 2371 points in the single-core test and 8326 in the multi-core test. Geekbench also revealed it is running Android Pie.

The Vivo NEX S and Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition are the two Vivo flagships with a Snapdragon 845 chipset but it seems they will soon be joined by a third phone which may launch as the Vivo Z3 Pro.

Vivo NEX 2 launched as Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition with three cameras, 10GB RAM & more

The Vivo model that we have all been waiting for is finally here. Just that it wasn’t launched as Vivo NEX 2 as expected but instead it is dubbed Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition. It’s not hard to know why it bears that name. The device comes with two displays, one at the back and one on the front but this is very much different to the type you’ll find on the likes of Yotaphone, Meizu Pro 7 etc. Another spectacular feature on the Nex Dual Display edition is the 3D TOF stereo camera it packs.

Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition Specs, Design & Features

The Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition is very much different from the first-gen Vivo NEX as there isn’t a pop-up camera this time around. We can’t be so sure but that could be an indication that the company may have given up on that design style. It is also possible that we might see another model in the first half of 2019 with the pop-up camera design.

Talking of the specifications, the Vivo NEX Dual Display edition is rich in features. It packs a 6.39-inch Super AMOLED bezel-less display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and extra tall 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Vivo says the display comes with 91.63% screen ratio. The rear display is equally a quality Super AMOLED instead of a grayscale display. The size is also pretty impressive- 5.49 inches with the traditional FHD resolution of 1920x1080pixels with the standard 16:9 aspect ratio. As expected of a flagship device, the Vivo NEX Dual is powered by a Snapdragon 845 chipset and will be available in 10GB of RAM coupled with 128GB of non-expandable storage.

Now, to the headline-making triple camera setup, it may interest you to note that the NEX Dual doesn’t have a front-facing camera. So, that explains why Vivo could ditch the pop-up design. On the other hand, there are three camera sensors at the back. For configuration, the main sensor is a 12MP one with OIS and f/1.79 aperture lens while the secondary camera has a 2MP sensor with f/1.8 which is perhaps a depth sensor. The third camera is a 3D TOF (time of flight) and will be deployed primarily for advanced face unlock. In addition, the 3D TOF camera offers some advanced features like personalized beautification, 3D modelling of the user’s face, etc. There is a flash at the extreme left of the sensors while the two main sensors are circled by a star light ring. The ring light illuminates during gameplay, when the camera timer is ticking and a few other occasions. The camera setup is also optimised for AI screen recognition, Body and Face Shaping. Apart from the Face Unlock, there is also an in-display fingerprint sensor. For software, the Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition comes with Android 9.0 Pie modified with Funtouch OS 4.5. It also comes with Vivo’s JOVI voice assistant. The device gets its juice from a 3500mAh battery with support for 10V/2.25A fast charging.

Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition Price & Available

The premium device comes clutching a pricey 4,998 yuan ($723) and is presently up for pre-order in China via Jingdong (JD.com), Suning, Tmall etc. It is available in Star Purple and Ice Field Blue colours. The device will go on sale on December 29. There is no word yet on its global release itinerary but we expect some information on that to pop up soon.

Meizu releases Flyme 7 Experience for Meizu 16th series

Meizu‘s Flyme Experience is a lite version of an upcoming version of Flyme. It is a way for users to experience some new features of the upcoming version rather than opting into a full beta program. If you are on a stable version of Flyme, you can simply download it without going through all the stress associated with beta versions. Another advantage it brings is that users can easily downgrade to their previous Flyme version if they don’t like it or run into issues.

Today, Meizu announced Flyme 7 Experience is now available for the Meizu 16th series. So if you own a Meizu 16th or Meizu 16th Plus, you can register to get the update and it will be pushed to your device. Those who manually download it to their device will have to create a backup of their data and wipe the phone before they can install it.

To be able to use Flyme 7 Experience on the Meizu 16th and Meizu 16th Plus, owners have to first update their devices to the latest stable version of Flyme. For the Meizu 16th, this latest version is Flyme 7.1.1.3A while Meizu 16th Plus owners have to be on version 7.1.3.3A.

LG launches the LG X5 in Japan, a rebranded G7 One

LG has announced the LG X5 for the Japanese market. The device is basically a rebranded LG G7 One that was first announced at IFA 2018 in Berlin, Germany. The major difference is that the G7 One comes with Android 8.1 Oreo but the X5 runs Android 9.0 Pie from the go. However, the G7 One has already gotten updated to Android Pie, thanks to the Android One program. The device also arrives with an outstanding design coupled with an impressive specs lineup.

The LG X5, or G7 One if you like, has as its standout feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset which is last year’s flagship SoC from Qualcomm. It also rolls out with Android One just like its contemporary. Specs wise, the LG X5 sports a 6.1-inch QHD+ notch-bearing display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The Snapdragon 835 chipset onboard teams up with 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 32GB of storage (UFS 2.1). The storage can be expanded via a microSD card slot which will allow you to add up to an additional 512MB of storage. On the camera end, you get a single 16MP rear camera with a f/1.6 aperture and a 71° wide angle lens and a single 8MP f/1.9 80° front-facing camera. It also has an FM radio. The X5 has a 3,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 and runs Android 9 out of the box. It will be available in Mystic White and New Moroccan Blue. As for the price, Y! Mobile offers it for JPY 83,484 or around $740 with a 24-month plan.

OPPO R17 and OPPO R17 Pro New Year Edition to launch December 17, registrations now open

In what seems to have become an annual tradition that started with the OPPO R9s, OPPO has announced it will unveil a New Year’s edition of the OPPO R17 duo on December 17.

The New Year Edition models of the R-series are known for their red color and the poster for the launch hints at that being the case for the OPPO R17 and OPPO R17 Pro too. The specs will remain the same as that of the regular variants but the packaging should be different.

The event will begin at 1800 hrs and hold in Shanghai. OPPO has already opened registration for those interested in picking up either phones this holiday.

The OPPO R17 has a 6.4-inch 2280 x 1080 AMOLED display. It is powered by the Snapdragon 670 processor with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It has 16MP + 5MP dual rear cameras and a 25MP f/2.0 front-facing camera. There is also an in-display fingerprint scanner and a 3,500mAh battery.

Huawei Nova 3 Receiving EMUI 9.0 Android Pie, Few Other Nova Series Phones in Line

While Huawei is set to announce a probable Nova 3 successor this month, the Huawei Nova 3 itself is getting EMUI 9.0 with Android Pie. The handset that was announced in July this year has been under testing for Android Pie since some time. However, it seems Huawei is now ready to seed the update via OTA to some regions. Do note that not all variants are receiving the update and a post on Reddit shows the Chinese variant has received the update.

Speaking about the Nova 3 update, it weighs around 4.7GB in size and comes with build number PAR-AL00 9.0.0.101. That’s quite a big update and if any Chinese user wishes to update their Nova 3, he/she should probably check for adequate internal storage before downloading the OTA. However, users might want to consider updating in the first place because there’s a big change in the update.

With regards to the features, the changelog mentions that EMUI 9.0 removes support for third-party launchers which means users will be stuck with EMUI after the update. The new HiVision feature that detects food and calories was also found to be very accurate by the Reddit user who posted the changelog.

OnePlus has unveiled the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition as the limited-edition variant of the OnePlus 6T phone that was announced at the end of October. OnePlus has collaborated with British automotive manufacturer McLaren Automotive for giving birth to the special OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition smartphone. In terms of specs, it is not very different from it regular. The handset has arrived with a refreshed design and it is packed with 10 GB of RAM. The smartphone also introduces the Warp Charge as the successor for Dash Charge rapid charging technology.

In terms of design, the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition features a carbon-fiber texture under its rear glass which becomes when direct light falls on it. An orange lining which shines when viewed from different angles can be seen at the bottom of the glass back. The orange lining continues on both sides and fades into the black color of the rear. The McLaren logo is placed towards the bottom of the rear shell.

The Snapdragon 845 chipset is present under the hood of the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition. It comes in a single storage version of 256 GB. It is packed with 3,700mAh battery. The smartphone is loaded with OxygenOS flavored Android 9 Pie OS. The OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition lacks a 3.5mm audio jack and a microSD card slot. Honor V20 reservations started on JD ahead of December 26 launch

Honor V20 is scheduled to get announced on Dec. 26 through an unveil event in Beijing, China. Around two weeks ahead of its official launch, the smartphone has now been listed on Jingdong Mall for reservations.

The Honor V20 JD listing carries a pricing of 9,998 Yuan. The listing states that it is not the real cost of the device. The Chinese manufacturer will be confirming the price of the Honor V20 at its unveil event later this month. The poster present on the JD listing confirms on the key features of the smartphone.

The Honor V20 will be equipped with Link Turbo technology which combines 4G and Wi-Fi signals for uninterrupted internet connectivity. The second key feature mentioned on the poster is the in-display camera hole design which allows it to deliver full screen experience. The third key feature of the Honor V20 is its Sony IMX586 48-megapixel AI ultra-clear photography.

The Honor V20 is rumored to feature a 6.4-inch display that will carry support for full HD+ resolution of 2310 x 1080 pixels. It will be running on Android 9 Pie OS.

For photography, the Honor V20 is expected to feature a triple camera setup with 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 as its main sensor. Here are the official camera samples of the V20 smartphone. The smartphone is also tipped to be equipped with a ToF (Time of Flight) 3D camera sensor for precise creation of 3D models of objects and people for AR.

The Honor V20 smartphone will be fueled by Kirin 980 chipset. None of the leaks have revealed the battery size of the V20. Through its 3C certification it has been known that it will be arriving with 22.5W fast charging support.
