Samsung’s 4K 240Hz QD-OLED gaming monitor just hit the Chinese market

Samsung has launched the Odyssey G81SF in China, featuring a 27-inch 4K 240Hz QD-OLED display. First showcased at CES 2025, the monitor delivers high-performance gaming visuals and competes with top OLED models from Asus and MSI. It is priced at 7,999 yuan ($1,102).

Samsung Odyssey G81SF

Samsung Odyssey G81SF Specifications

Samsung claims the Odyssey OLED G8 (G81SF) is the world’s first 4K OLED monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate, though Asus and MSI made similar claims at CES 2025.

The monitor uses Samsung Display’s fourth-generation QD-OLED panel, which offers improved longevity. It features 165 ppi for sharp visuals and a 0.03ms GtG response time, minimizing ghosting and input lag for smooth gameplay.

The G81SF boasts 99.3% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, native 10-bit color, and a 3840×2160 resolution, ensuring vivid and accurate visuals for both gaming and creative work. Its HDR brightness peaks at 1000 nits, while SDR brightness is rated at 250 nits, delivering strong contrast for HDR content.

Designed for high-end gaming setups, the monitor supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and Nvidia G-Sync Compatible technology, helping to reduce screen tearing and deliver a fluid gaming experience. It also carries VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification, meaning deeper blacks and better contrast than traditional LCDs.

Samsung has introduced Pulsating Heat Pipe technology, a thermal management system that claims to be five times more effective than conventional graphene-based cooling solutions. This should alleviate OLED burn-in concerns, working alongside intelligent static detection and built-in screen savers to extend panel longevity.

Beyond its impressive display, the Odyssey G81SF offers a flexible stand with tilt, height adjustment, and rotation support. While Samsung hasn’t disclosed all I/O details, the monitor includes HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort, and USB-C ports, alongside KVM and PIP functionality for seamless multitasking.

One UI 7 might not bring this awesome Galaxy AI feature on older devices

One UI 7 is one of the biggest software upgrades for Galaxy devices in recent years. It was released with the Galaxy S25 series at the Galaxy Unpacked event in January. The newest flagship phones running One UI 7 pack a host of software goodies, including several Galaxy AI features such as Now Bar, Now Brief, and more. Since these features were unveiled alongside One UI 7, many (including some of us at Gizmochina) assumed they would also roll out to older Galaxy devices with the update. But that won’t be the case as some Galaxy AI features may remain exclusive to the Galaxy S25 series.

Sally Jeong, EVP and Head of Framework R&D at Samsung MX, revealed some interesting details about the One UI 7 software in a recent interview published by Samsung Indonesia. She said that planning alone took more than two years before development even started. This is probably the biggest reason behind the significant delay in the release and rollout of One UI 7.

During the interview, Sally was asked about the role of NPUs and GPUs in powering these new AI features on the Galaxy S25, and the response was quite surprising. Samsung’s AI features can be divided into two categories: those that rely on on-device hardware and those that rely on the cloud. Sally said the “Personal Data Engine” in One UI 7 that powers features like Now Brief requires advanced chipsets and hardware like the Snapdragon 8 Elite on the Galaxy S25 series.

Related:
1. One UI 7 is massively delayed, but One UI 8 might arrive sooner than you think
2. Delayed One UI 7 update rollout may have led to One UI 7.1 cancellation

Sally also mentioned that cloud-based AI features, such as Circle to Search, are easier to roll out to a wide range of Galaxy devices. But for deeper on-device AI experiences, powerful hardware is required. This means some AI features that require extensive on-device processing might not come to older Galaxy devices after installing One UI 7.

The Samsung executive didn’t specify which Galaxy AI feature won’t make the cut to older Galaxy devices, nor did she reveal details about the ineligible devices. Now Brief could be one of them, which has, so far, not been seen in the One UI 7 betas for the Galaxy S24 series, as spotted by Android Police.

We’ll get to know more as and when One UI 7 starts rolling out, which is already too delayed. Samsung still hasn’t announced the rollout plans. If leaks are anything to go by, we shouldn’t expect it anytime soon, at least before April. You can read more about it in our One UI 7 section.

Apple iPhone 17 Air slim design showcased in new leaked renders

There have been plenty of rumors regarding Apple working on a new ultra slim iPhone model, which could be called the iPhone 17 Air. We recently saw the device in concept renders, and now, another set of renders has just leaked that showcase a slightly different design language. So let’s check it out.

Apple iPhone 17 Air New Renders Leaked

The Cupertino based giant’s upcoming iPhone 17 Air surfaced in a video from Front Page Tech that offers us a look at the device from all sides. Its ultra slim body is in full view, which could measure just under 6mm in thickness. But one of the biggest changes in the entire new iPhone model is the camera module. Ditching the minimalistic look from the other recent iPhones, this render showcases the iPhone 17 Air with a pill shaped module.

This appears similar to the visor on the Google Pixel smartphones. The renders are in line with previous reports, since we can only see a single camera on the back (likely a 48MP sensor) along with an LED flash module. The entire placement in this pill shaped module is different from the concept render we covered yesterday. Apple may bring the Dynamic Island on the front, while the A19 chip could power this device.

Apple iPhone 17 Air
Apple iPhone 17 Air

The iPhone 17 Air and Galaxy S25 Slim (Samsung’s own slim phone competitor) might also launch with the smallest batteries on a 2025 smartphone. The Air model could be borrowing its name from the brand’s MacBook Air lineup and is expected to offer a 120Hz ProMotion display, Apple’s 5G modem, the A19 chip, Wi-Fi 7, and a more durable display glass. It could launch for around 1000 US Dollars between September and October 2025. This is all the information we have at the moment, so stick around for more.

Samsung’s Android 15-based One UI 7.0 skin is expected to bring a cool new feature named “Now Bar” to affordable Galaxy devices, which is currently exclusive to the Galaxy S25 and S24 series (running on One UI 7 beta).

The “Now Bar” is a small pill-shaped widget that sits at the bottom center of your lock screen. It gives you quick info about stuff happening on your phone, like music playback, voice recordings, or timers. It’s like a mini command center that keeps you updated with certain information without having to unlock your phone or dig through apps. The big news is that it’s not staying exclusive to high-end models.

Affordable Galaxy phones are rumored to get the feature

Samsung launched the Galaxy A06 back in August 2024 and is known to be working on a 5G version of it. According to a recent leak, the 5G version will not only pack a faster chip and a higher refresh rate but also boast the above-mentioned software feature.

As Galaxy A06 5G is one of Samsung’s most budget-friendly models, the higher-end A series models that are eligible for the One UI 7 update are also expected to get the “Now Bar” feature.

Nonetheless, don’t expect much of the AI feature to be rolled out to the A series, as they require the flagship chipset and more RAM for proper functioning.

Now, here’s the not-so-great part. Samsung hasn’t released the stable One UI 7.0 update yet, which is a bit unusual. According to Samsung, One UI 7.0 is a “breakthrough” update, which requires more work, and is what’s causing the delay. Unfortunately, they haven’t given a clear timeline for when the update will finally drop. Here’s more about the delay.

Samsung’s Best – Galaxy S25 Ultra vs. Google’s Smartest – Pixel 9 Pro XL: Which is better?

Choosing between the Galaxy S25 Ultra and Pixel 9 Pro XL is a tough decision, as both are flagship devices pushing the boundaries of smartphone technology. Samsung brings top-tier hardware, premium build, and powerful performance, while Google focuses on AI-driven software, an exceptional camera, and a competitive price. This comparison is crucial for those looking to invest in a high-end phone, whether for photography, productivity, or long-term value.

1. Design and Display

Galaxy S25 Ultra

The Galaxy S25 Ultra has a premium titanium frame with Corning Gorilla Armor 2, making it extremely durable and scratch-resistant. The 6.9-inch Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X display supports 2600 nits peak brightness, offering stunning visuals, especially outdoors. The Pixel 9 Pro XL, on the other hand, features an aluminum frame with Gorilla Glass Victus 2, which is solid but slightly less durable. Its 6.8-inch LTPO OLED panel peaks at 3000 nits, making it brighter.

Both phones have 120Hz refresh rates, ensuring smooth performance, but Samsung’s higher resolution (1440 x 3120) and improved protection give it an edge.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL is lighter, but Samsung’s build feels more robust, making it the better choice for durability.

2. Specifications

Galaxy S25 Ultra
Galaxy S25 Ultra

The S25 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite (3nm), an industry-leading chipset, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL runs on Google’s Tensor G4 (4nm). While the Tensor G4 is optimized for AI and efficiency, the Snapdragon 8 Elite outperforms it in raw power and efficiency, especially for gaming and intensive tasks.

In terms of battery, the S25 Ultra has a 5000mAh battery with 45W wired charging and 15W wireless charging, whereas the Pixel 9 Pro XL has a slightly larger 5060mAh battery but with slower 37W wired charging.

The Pixel’s 23W wireless charging with the Pixel Stand is a plus, but Samsung’s faster-wired charging makes it the better choice for users needing quick top-ups.

3. Camera

Pixel 9 Pro xl
Pixel 9 Pro Xl

The S25 Ultra’s 200MP primary camera offers insane detail and advanced zoom capabilities with 3x and 5x optical zoom, along with an ultrawide 50MP lens. Google’s Pixel 9 Pro XL features a 50MP main sensor, 48MP periscope with 5x zoom, and 48MP ultrawide, relying heavily on computational photography.

While Pixel cameras are known for superior software processing, Samsung’s hardware advantage (higher megapixel count, laser autofocus, and multi-directional PDAF) provides more flexibility for photography enthusiasts.

For selfies, the Pixel’s 42MP front camera outperforms Samsung’s 12MP sensor, making it a better choice for front-facing shots.

4. Pricing

The S25 Ultra is priced at $1,247, whereas the Pixel 9 Pro XL starts at $688. The Pixel offers flagship performance at a more affordable price, but the S25 Ultra justifies its higher cost with better hardware, premium materials, and longer update support.

If budget is a concern, Pixel 9 Pro XL is a great value, but for those wanting the best of the best, Samsung is the superior choice.

5. Conclusion

Pixel 9 Pro xl
Pixel 9 Pro Xl
  • S25 Ultra features an S Pen, making it ideal for productivity and creativity.
  • Pixel 9 Pro XL introduces Satellite SOS, a potential lifesaver in emergencies.
  • Samsung offers 7 major Android updates, while Google promises the same but has a track record of faster rollouts.
  • Samsung’s display is more durable, while Pixel’s is brighter at 3000 nits peak.
  • Samsung’s chipset is more powerful, but Google’s AI processing is smarter.

If you prioritize hardware, display, and productivity, go for the S25 Ultra. If you want the best AI-driven camera experience and a more affordable price, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is a fantastic option.

Galaxy S25 series’ 45W charging drops to 15W due to annoying bug

The Galaxy S25 Plus and S25 Ultra support 45W fast charging, the same as the S24 and S23 series. But many users of the S25+ and S25 Ultra have reported unexpectedly slow charging speeds.

Notably, Samsung has switched to a different protocol for 45W charging. The phones come with a 3A cable and rely on a 15V input to achieve peak charging speed. However, users with a 5A cable have reported their phones drawing less than 15W on average—an issue that is reportedly software-related and expected to be fixed with an update. In the meantime, affected users can try using the included 3A cable as a workaround.

Most people are facing the issue with third party adapters and cables

While Samsung Italia didn’t reveal much beyond acknowledging the ‘anomaly on charging with the 5A cable’ and confirming they’re working on a fix, users on Reddit have shared more insights into the issue.

Reddit user Brangusler says he has tested his S25+ with multiple power adapters from Anker and “seen it go up to 25-28W maybe once or twice for a brief moment”. “I’m lucky to get a solid 15W and often it hangs out in the 5-10W range for seemingly no reason,” he added.

Samsung uses PD charging, a universal fast-charging standard, for its Galaxy devices. This means your phone should be compatible with a wide range of adapters and cables that support PD, regardless of the manufacturer. However, the current situation suggests otherwise. Ideally, your Galaxy flagship should draw power normally from your laptop charger or any third-party PD-supported charger, such as one from Anker. And this is true for older Galaxy phones such as the S10.

I haven’t seen any comments mentioning issues with the first-party power adapter—which, by the way, you’d have to buy separately, even if you already own five PD chargers. That also defeats the purpose of choosing PD in the first place. Hopefully, this is just a bug and not a deliberate move, and it gets fixed soon.

One UI 7’s Home and DIY customization issues get fixed with latest Home Up update

Samsung just dropped a new update for the Home Up Good Lock module, and it’s a pretty big deal for Galaxy S25 users that is running on Android 15-based One UI 7. The update (version 16.0.00.58) is live on the Galaxy Store, and it’s packed with fixes that make customizing your home screen way less of a headache. If you’ve been dealing with random crashes or weird widget issues, this one’s for you.

Here are the fixes

To begin with, the update tackles that super annoying bug where the “OneUI Home” app would crash every time you tried to edit your home screen using the DIY feature. Just imagine trying to customize your setup, and the app keeps crashing. Not cool, right? Thankfully, that’s been sorted out now. You can jump into editing mode without the app freaking out.

They have also fixed the widget transparency issue. When you deleted a widget in DIY mode, it would just hang there, all transparent and ghost-like. Not to mention, it made managing widgets a total mess. With this update, widgets now disappear as normal.

This update also fixes some other minor bugs. While the changelog doesn’t reveal much about the smaller fixes, the overall experience feels smoother. It’s one of those updates where you might not notice every single change, but things just work better.

If you’ve already upgraded to the Galaxy S25 series, experiencing the improvements is quite easy. Just head over to the Galaxy Store, hit the Menu option, and check for Updates. Or, if you’re already using the GoodLock app, you can get it from there. Either way, it’s a quick download that’s totally worth it if you’re into customizing your phone.

And for those using the Galaxy S24 series and waiting for One UI 7, here’s more about when you should expect the update.
