Nubia Z70 Ultra could run DeepSeek on-device

Samsung launched its latest flagship with the entire focus on new or improved AI features. Now the Chinese smartphone makers are also trying to catch up or surpass Samsung in the AI race, thanks to China’s DeepSeek. Several OEMs including Huawei, Honor, and Oppo have already been reported collaborating with DeepSeek to make their AI assistants smarter and more capable. Now Nubia has also announced their collaboration with DeepSeek.

deepseek

For those unfamiliar, DeepSeek not only showcases China’s progress in the field of AI, but it’s the biggest shake-up in the field since OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT. DeepSeek is more efficient to operate (this is significant because big tech giants were already building nuclear power plants to power their AI servers) outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4o in benchmarks and is open source, meaning anyone can use it.

Nubia to integrate DeepSeek in its Nebula AIOS

According to Nubia President Ni Fei (via ITHome), the company is aiming for a deeper integration of DeepSeek within its UI skin. The company has been increasingly focusing on AI integration for its phones and this collaboration might be a big step in the right direction. The official suggests that unlike other OEMs collaborating with DeepSeek, Nubia is going to “deeply embed DeepSeek into the system” which will reportedly utilize the full-scale 671 billion parameters.

It seems like the company is looking to run the model on-device, which has a number of benefits such as no internet requirement and data privacy.

The latest flagship, the Nubia Z70 Ultra, is going to be the first to benefit from the DeepSeek integration, and the development is already in progress. This phone packs the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, a 6150mAh Si/C battery, and supports 80W charging.

The 4 Most Anticipated Smartphones of February 2025

Several smartphones are expected to launch in February. However, we are only excited about some of them.

One of these devices is the most anticipated foldable of 2025. Another one is an annual Ultra phone from a popular Chinese brand.

The remaining models are mid-rangers. One of them is performance-focused, while the other is camera and design-oriented.

Let’s take a look at these products.

Upcoming Smartphones February 2025

1. Oppo Find N5

Oppo Find N5 live shot

Oppo is gearing up to debut its 4th book-style foldable smartphone. The device is officially called Oppo Find N5 and it will succeed the Oppo Find N3 from late 2023.

As the new model is arriving more than a year after its predecessor, it will pack some serious upgrades. Thanks to official teasers and unofficial leaks, we know a lot about this product.

For starters, it will launch as the world’s thinnest foldable. It will be about as thin as the USB Type-C port when unfolded.

Despite its thinness, the phone is expected to house a large 5,700mAh battery. On top of that, it will support 80W wired and 50W wireless charging standards.

The Find N5 will come with not one but three IP ratings, namely IPX6, IPX8, and IPX9. Lastly, it is rumored to feature a 7-core variant of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chip.

2. Xiaomi 15 Ultra

Xiaomi-15-Ultra-hands-on

The Xiaomi 15 Ultra will be the company’s 6th Ultra smartphone. It will be more of a yearly upgrade model.

The device will retain the giant circular module from its forerunners, however, the sensors will be arranged differently. The quad-camera setup will include a 50MP Sony LYT-900 primary sensor, a 50MP Samsung JN5 ultrawide unit, a 50MP Sony IMX858 3x telephoto snapper, and a 200 Samsung HP9 4.3x periscope telephoto shooter.

It will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC. Under the hood, it is expected to pack a 6,000mAh battery and support 90W wired as well as 50W wireless charging standards.

3. iQOO Neo 10R

The iQOO Neo 10R will be the latest mid-range powerhouse from the brand for India. It will house a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset and is expected to start at around ₹30,000 in the country.

The handset is tipped to draw energy from a 6,400mAh battery. It is said to come with a 50MP Sony LYT-600 primary camera and an 8MP ultrawide unit.

Other anticipated features include a 1.5K 144Hz OLED display, up to 12GB + 256GB memory configuration, and Funtouch OS 15 based on Android 15.

4. Vivo V50

The Vivo V50 is set to arrive alone this time around. The ‘Pro’ model is expected to be released sometime later.

The device is said to be a modified version of the Vivo S20. However, unlike the S20, the V50 will have Zeiss cameras.

The handset is anticipated to feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip and a 6,000mAh battery. Despite a large-sized battery, the product may have a thickness of just 7.2mm.

The phone will sport three 50MP cameras: two on the rear (wide + ultrawide) and one on the front (with autofocus). Lasty, it will flaunt a 6.67-inch 1.5K 120Hz micro-curved OLED display.

Redmi Turbo 4 Pro to pack a massive 6.8x” 1.5k display: speculates DCS

Xiaomi is reportedly working on a Snapdragon 8s Elite-powered midrange device, which packs a 6.8x” large 1.5K LTPS display. The news comes from well-known Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station, who previously hinted the presence of a Xiaomi phone with the chip and a massive 7410mAh battery.

Redmi Turbo 4 Pro specs (rumored)

He now reveals that the phone comes with a flat display design and the bezels are extremely narrow and symmetrical. For those wondering, an LTPS panel can switch between 60Hz and 120Hz to balance smoothness and power consumption based on the type of content that’s being played. Notably, it’s different from LTPO panels that support true variable refresh rates and is used in flagship devices. The middle frame and back panel could be made of metal and glass respectively, suggests the tipster.

Xiaomi Redmi Turbo 4

According to previous reports, it could be the Redmi Turbo 4 Pro. Redmi launched the Turbo 4 in January this year, which has a flat display and nearly symmetrical bezels.

Both the Redmi Turbo 4 and Turbo 3 came with a dual camera setup on the back, and the Turbo 4 Pro is also rumored to retain the 50MP + 8MP rear camera setup. The main sensor could be the 1/1.95″ Sony Lytia LYT-600, which is also a part of the Snapdragon 8s Elite-powered iQOO Neo 10R.

As for the UI experience, the Xiaomi phone will likely come with HyperOS 2.0 out-of-the-box. The phone is expected to launch in April this year, following the launch timeline of the Turbo 3.

While details about the Pro model are still scarce, we can refer to the base model to get an idea of what to expect. The Turbo 4 comes with an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, reaches 1400 nits in direct sunlight, and 3200 nits in peak brightness mode. It packs UFS 4.0 storage for faster app loading, which will likely be the case for the Pr model as well. The Turbo 4 supports 90W fast charging.

iPhone SE4 render: first SE with a modern design

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone SE 4 as soon as this week with a couple of major changes in design and functionalities. One of them is expected to be the addition of Face ID and the removal of the home button, which will make it look a lot like the iPhone 14 from the front. Recently, case maker Spigen revealed the renders of the phone with its case, which reaffirms the previous design rumors.

iPhone SE 4 renders accidentally revealed by Spigen

Unlike the iPhone SE 2022, this upcoming model has a completely flat design, and upon closer inspection, the display appears to have reasonably slim bezels. The display is expected to measure 6.1″, much larger than the 4.7″ SE 2022. As for the color options, the model is expected to come in some fresh hues in addition to the black, white, and red color options.

On the back, however, it still packs a single camera. Even the flash and the additional sensor retain their placement and offer a very similar look to its predecessor. According to a previous rumor, the sensor inside could have a 48MP resolution. But judging from the protrusion of the module (or the lack of it) it doesn’t seem like there is a bump in sensor size. So even though it has the same resolution as the iPhone 16 and it captures images at 24MP, the images may not have the same quality as the more expensive models.

Nonetheless, a lot of it depends on the image processing, which should improve with the Apple A18 chip. Yes, the iPhone SE 4 is expected to be powered by the chip the iPhone 16 runs on. Rumors also claim the upcoming SE will support Apple Intelligence.

The SE 4 is a compact model, and it certainly looks better with the redesign. let’s see how many software features Apple adds to their most affordable iPhone of 2025.

Vivo X Fold 4 may feature side-mounted fingerprint scanner instead of in-screen fingerprint sensor

Oppo has just confirmed that the Oppo Find N5 foldable phone will be announced on Feb. 20 in China. It will debut as the world’s first foldable phone powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite. Sibling brand Vivo is also said to be working on the Snapdragon 8 Elite-powered Vivo X Fold 4. A recent leak claimed that its arrival has been reportedly delayed to the second quarter of this year. A new leak, courtesy of tipster Digital Chat Station, reveals that the X Fold 4 will arrive with one major change.

Vivo to axe in-screen fingerprint sensor on the Vivo X Fold 4

Upcoming foldable, including the Vivo X Fold 4, will feature a side-facing fingerprint sensor, claims DCS

In the above leak, DCS has revealed that four Chinese smartphone manufacturers will launch horizontally foldable phones this year. While he has not explicitly mentioned the names, reports have claimed that these include the Oppo Find N5, Honor Magic V4, Vivo X Fold 4, and Huawei Mate X7.

As far as Xiaomi is concerned, it is likely to skip the Mix Fold 5 this year, but the good thing is that the company has reportedly not given up on book-style foldable phones.  The leak also suggests that all four foldable phones will be equipped with a side-facing fingerprint sensor.

This will be a major change for Vivo, as its previous foldables have all featured dual in-screen fingerprint sensors for both internal and external displays. The first-generation X Fold and X Fold+ came with optical-type in-screen fingerprint scanners, and it switched to ultrasonic-type on the X Fold 2 onwards. DCS claims that the reason brands are switching to a side-facing fingerprint sensor is to help reduce the thickness of upcoming foldables, bringing them in the range of 8mm in thinness. To put into context, the upcoming Find N5 is said to measure 9.2mm in the folded state.

Vivo X Fold 4 specifications (rumored)

Vivo X Fold 3 Pro
Vivo X Fold 3 Pro

As per reports, the Vivo X Fold 4 will be a very slim and lightweight foldable phone despite packing a battery of around 6000mAh capacity. The Snapdragon 8 Elite-powered device is expected to support wireless charging and offer an IPX8 level of water resistance. Its rear camera module is expected to include a 50-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. Reports also claim that this time around the brand will only release the Vivo X Fold 4, meaning there will not a Pro model like last year.

Realme GT 7 Pro Racing Edition is launching on February 13 as most affordable Snapdragon 8 Elite phone

Realme has officially revealed the upcoming GT 7 Pro Racing Edition, confirming it as the brand’s first flagship release after the 2025 Lunar New Year. Set to go on sale on Feb. 13, the device is expected to arrive as a toned-down version of the existing Realme GT 7 Pro. The poster released by the brand reveals that the Realme GT 7 Pro Racing Edition will be available in the unique “Neptune Exploration” colour. Inspired by the deep blue storms of Neptune, the phone’s back panel features a distinctive texture created using Realme’s proprietary “Zero-degree Storm AG” process.

The overall look of the phone appears to be a slightly modified version of the Realme GT 7 Pro. While the existing model has a triple-camera setup on the back, the Racing Edition variant comes with a dual-camera setup.

Realme GT 7 Pro Racing Edition specifications (rumoured)

Under the hood, the GT 7 Pro Racing Edition will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. A recently seen AnTuTu listing revealed a score exceeding 3 million points, positioning it as a high-performance gaming device. Additionally, storage is expected to be upgraded to UFS 4.1, ensuring faster data speeds.

The device will reportedly feature a 6.78-inch Samsung 8T LTPO OLED micro-quad-curved display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 1.5K resolution. It is likely to pack up to 24 GB of LPDDR5x RAM, up to 1 TB of storage, and a 6,500mAh battery with 120W fast charging support.

Compared to the standard GT 7 Pro, the Racing Edition is expected to come without a periscope telephoto camera. There’s a possibility that it may feature an optical in-screen fingerprint scanner instead of an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor.

Oppo Find N5’s About Phone page leak reveals camera downgrade, 5,600mAh battery, 8.12” display, and more

Oppo has officially announced the launch of its highly anticipated Find N5 foldable smartphone, set to debut on Feb. 20 in China. Alongside the announcement, the company released a few images showcasing the device’s sleek design and color options. While rumours have been circulating about the phone’s specifications, key details like display size and battery capacity had remained under wraps—until now. A leaked screenshot from the Find N5’s “About Phone” page has revealed some exciting details about the upcoming device.

The Oppo Find N5, which bears the PKH110 model number, will feature an 8.12-inch internal foldable display. However, there is no information available about the phone’s outer screen. Under the hood, it will be powered by the 7-core Snapdragon 8 Elite, making it the first foldable phone to feature the said chipset.

The device will come equipped with a massive 16GB of RAM, complemented by 12GB of virtual RAM and 512GB of internal storage. While the Find N3 featured a 4,805mAh battery, the N5 will pack a much larger 5,600mAh battery that supports 80W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. The device will run on ColorOS 15 based on Android 15, offering the latest software experience.

On the camera front, the Find N5 will sport a triple rear camera setup, though the leaked details contradict earlier rumours. Instead of three 50-megapixel sensors, the phone will feature a 50-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel secondary lens, and another 50-megapixel sensor, which could be a 3x periscope telephoto camera. For selfies, it will include two 8-megapixel cameras—one on the outer display and another on the internal foldable screen.

Oppo Find N5

There seems to be a noticeable downgrade in the camera department, as the predecessor model features a 32-megapixel front camera, a 20-megapixel internal camera, and a 48-megapixel (main) + 48-megapixel (ultra-wide) + 64-megapixel (3x periscope telephoto) triple camera setup on the back.

While Oppo has confirmed that the Find N5 will feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, it has yet to confirm the other specs of the device. Therefore, it is advisable to approach the above leak cautiously.

Apple’s first Foldable iPhone/iPad may finally launch next year

Apple might finally be launching its very own foldable device soon. A new rumor has hinted that the brand’s first ever foldable iPhone or foldable iPad might be arriving as early as next year. So here is everything you need to know.

Apple may finally launch a foldable device in 2026

While various popular Android competitors like Samsung have already released multiple generations of foldable smartphones, the Cupertino based giant has yet to make any announcement for a similar device. But in the news shared by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman on his recent Power On newsletter, Apple could be planning on launching its first foldable model as early as next year.

foldable-iPhone
Foldable iPhone Concept Render

It is still unclear what form this upcoming flexible device will take and whether it will be a foldable iPhone or a foldable iPad. The company might also announce a brand new product line of foldable gadgets as well. There are also rumors that point at the Mac lineup getting a foldable model as well. However, Gurman adds that these foldable Macs are still more than a couple of years away. Meanwhile, even the foldable iPhone is reportedly facing quality control issues.

In other words, the foldable iPhone is the most likely to debut in 2026. Back in December 2024, we also covered a report regarding how Apple’s first foldable iPhone might be a notebook style “Fold” rather than a clamshell folding “Flip” model. Known analysts also claimed that Apple may unveil a foldable MacBook sometime in 2026, but Gurman’s latest report hints otherwise. Keep in mind that this all just speculation still, so take this news with a pinch of salt and stick around for more.

Amazon going big on AI in 2025 with plans to spend an insane $100 billion

Creating Artificial Intelligence like ChatGPT is not a cheap investment, with estimates suggesting hundreds of millions to billions of dollars being sunk into AI for building and training it. However, money doesn’t seem like an object to Amazon which might be planning on spending a ludicrous amount of money on AI this year.

Amazon to invest $100 billion in AI this year

DeepSeek recently took the world by storm with an alleged budget cost of development, but Amazon is going big on AI and is spending top dollar. According to a TechRadar report, the American tech giant aims to spend $100 billion on AI this year. In comparison, DeepSeek claimed that it only took a few million dollars to train its R1 model, which may or may not be true.

Amazon Bedrock AI

However, AI is still a hefty business as companies like Google and Microsoft are sinking tens of billions of dollars in their respective projects. The big names in tech have already been readily adopting AI in recent years, with Amazon being an outlier. So it seems quite surprising that the company is becoming one of the highest spenders in artificial intelligence. One could argue that it was only a matter of time.

During its latest earnings call, Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon hinted that the brand could be planning on spending more than $100 billion on AI in 2025. So Alexa might be getting a new evolution soon. Unfortunately, this is all the information we have at the moment, so stick around for more. In related news, India is also working on its own AI model to compete with the likes of ChatGPT and DeepSeek. The latter is also seeing some trouble in the global market as some governments see it as a Chinese threat.

Xiaomi Watch S4 specifications and price leaks for the global variant

Xiaomi’s Watch S4, which debuted in China last October alongside the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Pro, appears to be heading for a global release. Leaker Sudhanshu Ambhore has shared details and renders alongside its price for the European version. And as expected, almost everything is similar except for the price.

Xiaomi Watch S4 Specifications

The leak reveals that the smartwatch will be available in silver, black, and rainbow color options. It sports a 1.43-inch AMOLED display with a 466 x 466-pixel resolution and boasts a peak brightness of 2,220 nits.

Connectivity will include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3, with Bluetooth calling support thanks to integrated microphones and speakers.

Health and fitness tracking features are standard which will include a heart rate monitor, accelerometer, and barometric altimeter. For navigation, it will support GPS, Beidou, Galileo, and GLONASS. Additionally, the Watch S4 will support NFC functionality and is rated 5 ATM for water resistance, making it suitable for brief swims.

The wearable will be powered by a 486 mAh Li-Po battery, which reportedly offers up to 15 days of usage. It is said to be compatible with smartphones running Android 8.0 and above or iOS 12.0 and higher. However, Ambhore’s leak does not mention the wrist gesture controls found in the Chinese version.

Pricing and Availability

Ambhore suggests the European retail price for the base Bluetooth model will be around €159, approximately €10 higher than the launch price of the Xiaomi Watch S3, which currently retails for around €115 on Amazon DE. Pricing for an LTE version remains under wraps, though.

According to rumors, Xiaomi might launch the Watch S4 alongside the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Ultra. And while it’s not confirmed yet, it’s likely the launch event will be scheduled in March, coinciding with MWC 2025.

Galaxy S25 Photo Editing: AI Eraser vs. Object Eraser – Which one is better?

The Samsung Galaxy S25 series offers some impressive photo editing features, and two that often get compared are the Galaxy AI Eraser and the Object Eraser. Both aim to remove unwanted elements from your photos, but they approach the task differently. So, which one is better? After spending considerable time experimenting with both, I’m here to share my insights and help you decide which tool is right for you.

Understanding the tools

Both the Galaxy AI Eraser and the Object Eraser can produce good results. However, the key difference lies in how they achieve those results. The Object Eraser, a more traditional approach, essentially tries to patch or clone pixels from the surrounding area to fill in the gap left by the removed object. It’s like a digital version of using the clone stamp tool in Photoshop.

The Galaxy AI Eraser, on the other hand, leverages the power of generative AI. It doesn’t just copy pixels; it understands the context of the image and generates new content to seamlessly replace the removed object. This makes a significant difference, especially when dealing with complex backgrounds or objects.

Comparing the results

To illustrate the difference between the Galaxy AI Eraser and the Object Eraser, I’ve included three images above. The first is the original photo. The second demonstrates the result achieved with the Galaxy AI Eraser, and the third shows the image after using the Object Eraser. As you can see, the AI Eraser typically achieves a clean removal in just one or two attempts, while the Object Eraser often requires a few more steps to reach a comparable result. This efficiency highlights the power of generative AI.

The AI Eraser “understands” the image context in a way traditional object removal tools simply can’t, allowing it to seamlessly reconstruct the missing areas. It’s also important to note that because the AI Eraser generates new content, the resulting image is marked with a watermark indicating “AI-generated content.”

How to access Galaxy AI Eraser and Object Eraser

To access the Galaxy AI Eraser, open an image in the Gallery and tap the Galaxy AI icon. Then, draw a lasso around the area you want to edit. Once selected, you can move or delete it as needed. As can be seen in the first image of this post, it provides the “Sketch to Image” option, which can be used to leverage the power of generative AI to add new elements to the image.

Galaxy AI can also be used in a couple of other ways to enhance the image. When you open an image within the Gallery and swipe up, it will suggest some AI-driven options to modify the image. For instance, swiping up on the above image brought up four options:

  • Remaster: Enhances the overall quality of the image, often improving brightness, contrast, and sharpness.
  • Live Effect: Adds dynamic effects to the image, such as light trails or motion blur.
  • Erase Reflections: Specifically targets and removes unwanted reflections from the image.
  • Background Effect: Allows you to change or blur the background of the image.

Accessing the Object Eraser

The Object Eraser can be accessed by opening an image from the Gallery and hitting the four dots icon. Apart from erasing certain portions of the image, it provides some other options like Erase Shadows and Erase Reflections.

Tips for Best Results

Here are a few tips to maximize your success with both the AI Eraser and Object Eraser:

  • For complex removals, start with the AI Eraser. If the result isn’t perfect, you can then use the Object Eraser for fine-tuning.
  • Zoom in for precise selections, especially when using the Object Eraser. Accurate selections are key for seamless results.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment! Both tools are forgiving—if you’re not happy with the result, you can undo the changes or save a copy. If you’ve made multiple edits to the same image, you can always tap “Revert to original” from the three-dot menu at the top-right corner to restore the original version.
  • Remember that the AI Eraser generates new content, so the results might sometimes be unpredictable. Always review the edited image carefully.

Smartphone Brands Known for Performance: The Best Choices in 2025

What do you look for when picking out a new smartphone? Is it the design, the cameras, the software (Android vs. iOS), battery life, or sheer performance? Everyone has their own priorities, and no two users are exactly alike.

For me, though, it’s simple—I choose my smartphone based on three key factors:

  • Performance
  • Camera
  • Battery

Honestly, it becomes much easier to find a phone that suits my needs when I focus on these aspects.

Performance comes first because, honestly, it’s the one factor that makes or breaks your experience. Whether you’re gaming, multitasking, or just want a smooth, lag-free device that holds up over time, a phone’s power matters more than anything else.

So, which brands actually deliver on performance? If you’re looking for speed, power, and long-term reliability, these are the smartphone makers you should be paying attention to.

Smartphone brands known for performance

1. Apple’s great at optimization

iPhone 16 Pro max

Apple’s iPhone lineup has long been the gold standard for performance—not necessarily because of raw specs, but because of optimization. Every year, the company releases new iPhones powered by its in-house A-series chips, and year after year, those chips outperform the competition in real-world use.

Take the iPhone 16 Pro Max, for example. It runs on the A18 Pro chip, which isn’t just about fast benchmarks—it’s also about efficiency. Apple’s control over both hardware and software means iOS remains smooth even after years of updates, something few Android phones can match.

The integration of hardware-accelerated ray tracing in mobile games and an industry-leading GPU make iPhones the preferred choice for gaming, despite Apple never marketing them as gaming phones.

That being said, iPhones are not for everyone. Apple’s ecosystem locks users into its services, and customization is limited compared to Android. But if you care about long-term performance and software support, Apple remains a top choice.

2. ASUS ROG is built for gamers

Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro

ASUS has made a name for itself in the gaming world, and its ROG Phone series is built entirely around performance. Unlike Apple and Samsung, which balance performance with other priorities, ASUS focuses almost exclusively on speed, thermal management, and gaming features.

The ROG Phone 9 Pro, for instance, packs the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip with active cooling mechanisms and a 185Hz high-refresh-rate display designed for serious gaming. It also includes dedicated gaming triggers, customizable RGB lighting, and a massive battery to sustain long sessions.

The downside? ASUS phones aren’t as polished in the software department. They receive fewer updates than mainstream brands, and their cameras aren’t competitive with Samsung or Apple. But if gaming is your priority, there’s no better option.

3. Performance on a budget means Xiaomi

Poco-X7-Pro-WildBoost-Optimization-3.0

While Xiaomi is now a familiar name in the smartphone world, its sub-brand Poco has carved out its own niche—delivering impressive performance at prices that undercut the competition. And when it comes to performance-focused devices, the Poco X-series has been leading the charge.

Take the Poco X7 Pro, for instance. It’s powered by the Dimensity 8400 Ultra—a chipset based on the same architecture as the Dimensity 9400, offering flagship-tier power at a fraction of the cost. The phone also packs LPDDR5X RAM, UFS 4.0 storage, and a 3D IceLoop cooling system with a 5,000mm² stainless steel vapor chamber to keep thermals in check during intense tasks.

And the kicker is all of this comes in at around $350—making Poco’s X-series one of the best performance-centric options in its price range.

4. OnePlus is an affordable flagship

OnePlus 13

OnePlus has built its reputation on offering fast and smooth performance, and despite some missteps over the years, it remains a strong player in 2025. The OnePlus 13 powered by the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite chip delivers excellent speed with its lightweight OxygenOS software for half the price of flagships from Samsung and Apple.

OxygenOS has long been praised for its near-stock Android feel with added optimizations that make animations and transitions feel snappier. The brand also focuses on high-refresh-rate displays and fast charging to deliver an overall fluid experience.

5. Samsung is a reliable Android alternative

Samsung might not be the first brand that comes to mind when you think of performance-centric Android phones. Unlike some competitors, it doesn’t release devices explicitly built for gaming. Instead, much like Apple, Samsung focuses on delivering a well-rounded experience across its lineup, from budget models to premium flagships.

That said, the Galaxy S series could become a solid choice for those prioritizing top-tier performance. Samsung consistently equips these phones with the latest SoCs, and in recent years, it has stepped up its game in thermal management—a crucial factor for sustained performance. As a result, these phones can easily handle demanding games without breaking a sweat.

More importantly, what sets Samsung apart is its long-term software support commitment. The company has significantly improved optimization over the years and now promises up to seven years of software updates—a level of longevity that few Android brands can match. And let’s be real: performance isn’t just about raw power; it’s about how well the software and hardware work together over time.

6. Honorable Mentions: RedMagic and iQOO

Some lesser-known brands also cater specifically to performance enthusiasts. RedMagic, for instance, builds gaming phones that rival ASUS ROG, with built-in cooling fans and dedicated gaming features. iQOO, a sub-brand of Vivo, offers flagship-level performance at a mid-range price, making it a solid choice for those who want power without breaking the bank.

7. The Verdict: Which Brand Should You Choose?

There’s no single “best” performance brand—only the best choice for your needs.

  • For long-term performance and reliability: Apple
  • For gaming: ASUS ROG
  • For fast and fluid everyday use: the OnePlus
  • For versatility and longevity: Samsung
  • For affordability without sacrificing performance: Poco by Xiaomi

Ultimately, the best-performance phone is the one that matches your priorities. Whether it’s gaming, multitasking, or just a phone that doesn’t slow down after a year, there’s an option for everyone in 2025.

Google might let you start WhatsApp video calls directly from Messages

Google seems to be exploring ways to simplify communication by integrating third-party video calls directly into its Messages app.

A recent report by Android Authority reveals that the company is testing a feature that will allow users to initiate WhatsApp video calls without leaving the messaging platform.

Assemble Debug from Android Authority managed to activate and test the feature during an APK teardown of Google Messages version 20250131. And from the looks of it, the process seems pretty straightforward.

Video call on WhatsApp through Google Messages

If both users have WhatsApp installed and configured, tapping the video call button in Google Messages will initiate a WhatsApp call. If the recipient doesn’t have WhatsApp, the call will likely default back to Google Meet.

For now, the feature seems limited to private chats, but the report suggests it will likely extend to group conversations when the stable version rolls out.

Currently, initiating a video call in Google Messages defaults to Google Meet.  This requires both participants to have Meet installed, be logged into their Google accounts on both Messages and Meet and have a phone number that supports LTE-based calling. While functional, this setup isn’t always the most seamless, particularly given the widespread use of other video calling apps.

While Google is testing this WhatsApp integration, there’s no official word on when it might be rolled out. It’s possible that Google may trial it in beta versions first to gather feedback before pushing it to a broader audience.

It’s also unclear what the exact requirements will be for WhatsApp to become the default video call option.  Will users get to choose between WhatsApp and Google Meet before a call?  Google hasn’t confirmed this yet.

Beyond video calls, it would be useful if Google expanded this integration to include regular voice calls over the internet, not just video.
