Apple captures 10% of India’s cost-sensitive smartphone market; breaks into top five

Apple has finally touched the 9-10% mark in the smartphone market of India in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to preliminary data from IDC and Counterpoint Research. For the first time, it has entered the top five ranks in the country. It could be due to rising demand for its premium devices and innovative offerings.

Apple has become the brand of choice for young Indians

The festive season of 2024 proved to be a game-changer for Apple in India. Aggressive pricing strategies, including festive discounts, no-cost EMIs up to 24 months, and attractive deals on various e-commerce platforms helped the giant reach a wider audience in India. The new AI-powered iPhone 16 series, no doubt, has generated a lot of buzz. But surprisingly, the older models like the iPhone 15 and iPhone 13 kept on selling.

“With increasing disposable income and aspirational purchases among the growing middle class, especially the youth, Apple has become the brand of choice for young consumers. Beyond tier 2 cities, the iPhone represents more than just a smartphone – it’s a lifestyle statement,” said Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint.

The numbers speak for themselves. Apple shipped more than 12 million iPhones in India in 2024, which is a staggering 34-35% year-on-year growth compared to the 9 million units sold in 2023.

Apple

India has emerged as the fifth-largest market for Apple, and could become the third-largest market for the company by 2026, as Apple is likely to sell 15 million units a year in India by then. This comes as part of the expansion of the country’s manufacturing footprint for the company.

Galaxy S26 series could equip much larger batteries

Consumer electronics devices have been using lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries for well over a decade now. Very recently, Chinese smartphone makers have switched to a new battery tech: silicon-carbon anode battery. It has enabled foldables to become as slim as bar phones when folded and bar phones to shrink to 6.3″ again, all while packing larger battery than the 6.8″ Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra roundup

Samsung is finally rumored to switch to this emerging battery technology starting with the Galaxy S26 series next year.

For those unfamiliar, silicon anode batteries pack much higher energy density than traditional Li-ion batteries that smartphone manufacturers have used so far, and this increase in energy density has made it possible for the manufacturers to avoid bulky designs, without hindering the battery life.

Samsung was previously rumored to be working on a different battery tech called “Stacked Battery Technology“, which reportedly improves the energy density by 10%. By applying the stacking process, energy density can be increased by more than 10%. For example, if the battery capacity of the latest Galaxy S Ultra is 5,000mAh, applying stacking could increase it to over 5,500mAh. But now it seems that Samsung has decided to adopt the silicon-carbon battery tech instead.

Galaxy S25 Slim might not benefit from this tech

For those wondering, there is no word on the adoption of such technology for the upcoming Galaxy S25 Slim. According to a recent report, both the S25 Slim and Apple’s iPhone 17 Air will pack batteries with a capacity between 3000 mAh – 4000 mAh.

Samsung’s current Ultra flagship offers an incredible battery life with a 5000mAh capacity. It will be interesting to see how much of an improvement in battery capacity and battery life the Galaxy S26 Ultra manages to offer with the silicon-carbon anode battery tech.

That said, the upcoming Galaxy S25 series devices are rumored to pack the exact same battery capacity as their predecessors. However, the more efficient Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset should make it possible for the devices to offer a slight improvement in battery life as compared to last year’s models.

Honor’s CEO Zhao Ming Steps Down, Former Huawei Exec Joins as New Leader

In a surprising turn of events, Honor CEO Zhao Ming has stepped down from his position due to health reasons. The company’s board of directors has appointed Li Jian, a former Huawei executive with extensive experience, as the new CEO.

Zhao Ming, a 17-year Huawei veteran, played a pivotal role in Honor’s success. After taking over the brand in 2015, he steered it to become the No. 1 online mobile phone brand in China for several consecutive quarters.

Honor CEO Zhao Ming resigns

Under his leadership, Honor surpassed Samsung to become the No. 1 mobile phone brand in Russia at the end of 2019 and reached the No. 2 spot in the overall Chinese smartphone market in 2020.

However, Honor’s trajectory took a sharp turn in November 2020 due to US sanctions on Huawei. The tech giant was forced to sell its Honor business unit, and Zhao Ming became the CEO of the newly independent Honor Terminal Co., Ltd.

Honor’s success with Zhao Ming

Despite facing significant challenges, the new Honor, under Zhao Ming’s guidance, managed to establish its own R&D, product development, supply chain, and market systems within a remarkable timeframe of just four months. The company then launched the Honor V40 as its first product after the separation in January.

Honor also took a significant step towards an initial public offering (IPO) by completing its shareholding reform and changing its company name at the end of 2024. The company is now called Honor Device Co., Ltd.

Honor's new CEO Li Jian
Meet Honor’s new CEO Li Jian

The Chinese smartphone market continues to be fiercely competitive. According to data analysis agency Canalys, Vivo leads the pack with a 17% market share in 2024, followed by a resurgent Huawei with a 37% year-on-year growth. Apple, OPPO, and Honor occupy the third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively, with a market share of 15%.

Li Jian, the new CEO, brings a wealth of experience from his long tenure at Huawei, including involvement in major strategic reforms and leadership in crucial business battles. His expertise in strategic management and global operations will be invaluable for Honor moving forward.

Vivo V50’s RAM, storage variants, images, revealed well before launch

Back in October, the Vivo V50 was spotted with the V2427 model number in the IMEI database. In the recen weeks, the device has bagged approval from various certification platforms, such as EEC (Europe), BIS (India), TDRA (UAE), and NBTC (Thailand). In the latest development, the V50 has received approval from Taiwan’s NCC regulatory body. The listing has revealed the images and key specifications of the device for the first time.

Vivo V50 design revealed

The images that have emerged through V50’s NCC certification have revealed that it will be available in white, blue, and grey options. The device measures 165 x 75mm, but there is no information about its thickness.

The oval-shaped camera module has two cameras followed by a ring LED flash. The design is reminiscent of the Vivo S20, which is exclusively available in the Chinese since December 2024.

Vivo V50 key specifications (rumored)

The Vivo V50’s NCC certification reveals that it will be available in two configurations: 12GB RAM + 256GB storage and 12GB RAM + 512GB storage. It is set to feature a 6,000mAh battery (5,890mAh rated capacity) with support for 90W fast charging.

This suggests that the V50 could be a modified version of the Vivo S20 rather than a direct rebrand, as the S20 comes with a larger 6,500mAh battery. The smaller battery size on the V50 hints at a slimmer profile compared to the S20, which has an impressively slim profile of 7.2mm.

The V50 will run on Android 15 and Funtouch OS 15. It will also offer usual connectivity features, such as Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, NFC, and GPS. With a couple of certifications under the belt, it appears that the V50 may debut along with the V50 Pro (V2428 model number) in the ongoing quarter of this year.

Two Decades of Design in One Place: Nokia Launches Online Museum of Its Devices

It’s no secret that mobile phones have come a long way since their early days. But no matter how powerful today’s smartphones get, they just don’t hit the same way those chunky, indestructible classics did. Now, there’s a chance to relive those golden years of mobile design, thanks to the newly launched Nokia Design Archive.

This digital collection, spearheaded by Aalto University in Finland, brings together sketches, photos, interviews, and videos from Nokia’s design journey between the mid-1990s and 2017.

Nokia Design Archive

It features over 700 curated entries spanning from the mid-1990s to 2017, including sketches, photos, presentations, and even interviews.  But that’s not all – there’s also an uncurated repository with a staggering 20,000 items and 959GB of digital files!

Nokia Design Archive is a trip down memory lane

For anyone who grew up with a Nokia in their pocket, this is a nostalgia goldmine. The archive includes early concept sketches, mood boards, and product presentations—offering an inside look at how some of the most iconic mobile devices took shape.

It’s not just about reminiscing over the 3310 or the N-Gage; it’s about understanding how those designs were shaped by user behavior and technological shifts.

Nokia 5100

“In the early ages of Nokia, there was a genuine wish to understand people, how they live, what makes them tick,” said Professor Anna Valtonen, the lead researcher behind the project. “Now we’re at a similar point of societal transformation with AI. Nobody has concretized what it is yet, but we need to get people thinking about what could be.”

Visiting the archive feels a bit like floating through Nokia’s design history in an interactive word cloud. It covers topics like Mobile Games and Gaming—giving insight into the birth of the legendary Snake game—as well as Phones, Fashion, and Accessories. Users can filter the collection by products, aesthetics, design processes, and strategy, or dive into specific years to see how Nokia’s vision evolved.

iPhone 17 Air and Galaxy S25 Slim could stand out as the smallest battery phones of 2025

Smartphone makers have always been in a race to achieve something remarkable—be it better cameras, powerful chipsets, or slimmer designs. But when it comes to slimness, battery life appears as the price to pay. Rumors suggest that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Air and Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Slim will feature ultra-thin designs.

iPhone 17 Air

According to renowned Weibo tipster DCS, both devices are rumored to be around 5.x mm to 6.x mm thick, significantly slimmer than their predecessors—the Galaxy S24 and iPhone 16—both of which measure over 7.5mm in thickness.

Slimmer designs, smaller batteries

The iPhone 17 Air is rumored to go all-in on its slim profile, possibly trading off features like a multi-camera setup for a single rear camera. And now, leaks suggest that it’ll also pack a battery somewhere between 3,000mAh and 4,000mAh. Although it seems like a decent number for an iPhone, consider the fact that the 7.8mm iPhone 16 carries a battery with only 3561 mAh capacity.

But Apple isn’t the only one cutting down. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Slim, another ultra-slim contender, might also land in the same boat. Despite an earlier claim of a 5,000mAh battery (matching the much bulkier Galaxy S25 Ultra), tipster Digital Chat Station reports that the Galaxy S25 Slim (CAD renders) will also feature a capacity somewhere between 3000mAh to 4,000mAh.

The idea of squeezing larger batteries into such thin frames isn’t impossible—high-density silicon-carbon (Si/C) battery tech could help—but neither Apple nor Samsung seems ready to adopt it yet.

What does it mean for the two devices?

The rumored battery capacities are underwhelming, especially in a market where even mid-range Chinese phones are gearing up to launch with 7,500mAh batteries. Without high-capacity cells, Apple and Samsung will have to rely heavily on limiting the peak performance to extend battery life.

In fact, the Galaxy S25 Slim was recently spotted on Geekbench with the lowest scores of all the Galaxy S25 models, despite using the same Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. This suggests potential performance throttling to save battery and prevent overheating in such a slim form factor. This is a tradeoff that may even affect some regular use cases like high-resolution video recording.

According to the tipster, Chinese brands are also working on similar slim models but with at least 5,000mAh batteries.

Nothing‘s first smartphone, the Nothing Phone (1) is finally receiving the stable Nothing OS 3.0 update, based on Android 15. The update, with firmware version V3.0-250108-1938 and a total size of 1.46GB, has been released to some users today, with others set to receive it soon.

The update introduces Shared Widgets, a feature that lets users display Photo Widgets on their home screens to connect with friends and family. This feature is exclusive to Nothing devices and is currently in beta, with plans to expand widget compatibility over time.

The lock screen has been updated with new customization options. Users can long-press the lock screen or visit the Customization page to select new clock face styles and add more widgets, making the lock screen more functional.

The AI-powered Smart App Drawer organizes apps into folders automatically for better organization. Users can also pin their favorite apps at the top of the drawer for quicker access.

The Pop-Up View feature has been enhanced for improved multitasking. Users can move the pop-up window to any part of the screen, resize it using the corners, or pin it to the screen edge for quick access. Notifications can also be swiped down to activate the pop-up view without leaving the current app.

Design adjustments have been made to improve usability. Quick Settings and the widget library have been redesigned for easier navigation and editing. The Settings menu now shows more details in the Network & Internet and Bluetooth sections. New animations have been added for fingerprint unlocking and charging, enhancing visual appeal.

Additional updates include smarter AI learning to prioritize frequently used apps, auto-archive support to manage storage space, and partial screen sharing for app-specific recording. The predictive back animation feature works in supported apps, and a refined setup wizard ensures a smoother onboarding experience. You can also check out the official changelog below.

Apple iPhone SE 4 dummy unit leaked with an iPhone 4-like design

The upcoming iPhone SE 4 is expected to be one of the best value iPhones in 2025. Over the last couple of months, we have covered various rumors and reports regarding this budget iPhone. And now, the latest leak has revealed design details thanks to new dummy renders. The next gen SE 4 might feature a design reminiscent of a very old Apple iPhone, so let’s check it out.

Apple iPhone SE 4: A Modern iPhone 4?

The Cupertino based giant’s new iPhone SE 4 was just spotted in a fresh leak shared by tipster Sonny Dickson on X (formerly Twitter). In the tweet, we can see the back of the smartphone in two color variants and even get a look at its side profile. There have already been various rumors regarding Apple offering just a single camera at the back, but its the design that caught my eye.

At first glance, the iPhone SE 4 reminded me of a near 15 year old phone. Back in June 2010, the iPhone 4 was first debuted and the iPhone SE 4 just looks like a modern remake of the same. Some have even compared it to the Google Nexus 5 and even the other resemblance seems fair. The dummy units carry a flat rear panel made with glass but with rounded corners.

On the other hand, the frame on the sides employs metal for a more premium build. The volume rockers and alert slider can also been seen along with the SIM card slot. Based on what we know so far, the iPhone SE 4 may cost under $500 thanks to Apple’s custom 5G model. Recent leaks have even confirmed some of its key specs like 6.06-inch LCD screen, A18 chipset, and 48MP Sony Exmor IMX904 sensor on the rear, and a 12MP selfie camera on the front.
