Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4: What we expect to see from Android’s next best SoC

Qualcomm is gearing up for its annual Snapdragon Summit, scheduled to take place in late October 2024. As always, the spotlight will be on the next generation flagship processor – the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. 

The 8 Gen 4 will mark a big shift for Qualcomm’s flagship SoCss, as it’s more than just a typical incremental upgrade. The company is redesigning this chip from the ground up, including its fundamental architecture. So, what can we exactly expect from the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4? Here’s a summary of the details we’ve gathered so far on what Qualcomm has in store for its next-gen mobile SoC.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 What to expect

1. Oryon cores for mobile SoC

The major change for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is its shift from Cortex to Qualcomm’s self-developed Oryon CPU cores. These Oryon cores are the same ones used in the company’s latest Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus PC chips.

However, it’s unlikely that the current computing-focused Oryon cores will be used in mobile devices. Instead, we will probably see a scaled-down version of these Oryon cores for mobile, though it’s unclear how much Qualcomm will cut down the design.

2. Core architecture

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to be built on a 3nm process using TSMC’s N3E node. Compared to the 4nm process of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the 3nm node allows for more transistors in the same chip area, resulting in better performance and efficiency.

The smaller transistors of the 3nm process should, in theory, consume less power when performing the same tasks compared to the 4nm process. However, these advancements will likely come at a cost. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts a 25-30% price increase for the 8 Gen 4 compared to its predecessor, which means phones powered by the new SoCs will also be more expensive.

Beyond the changes in architecture and node, the core structure of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is also expected to change. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 used a 1+3+4 cluster design, featuring one high-performance core, three mid-range cores, and four efficiency cores.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to switch to a 2+6 design, eliminating the efficiency cores altogether. It will reportedly feature two high-performance Oryon cores clocked at 4.26 GHz, along with six Cortex-A725 cores at 2.8 GHz. 

MediaTek first adopted this approach of not including efficiency cores with its Dimensity 9300 last year, and Qualcomm appears to be following suit.

3. GPU

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to feature a new Adreno GPU, possibly the Adreno 830. While details about this graphical unit are scarce, it is expected to use a new Slice GPU architecture and new technology to improve “GPU utilization,” which will deliver overall better performance.

4. Early benchmarks 

What do these changes bring in terms of actual performance? The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4’s primary competitor will likely be Apple’s A-series chip, expected to power the iPhone 16. Early leaks suggest the 8 Gen 4 might match the A18 in single-core performance and potentially surpass it in multi-core tasks.

It reportedly achieved around 3000 for single-core and 10,000 for multi-core performance, easily surpassing the iPhone 15 Pro and Galaxy S24 Ultra scores.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 has also been reported running AnTuTu, where it scored 1,769,083 points. This score is lower than expected for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 but that could possibly be due to optimization issues.

5. Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 phones

Early reports suggest that the Xiaomi 15 series will likely be the first smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor. This comes as no surprise, given Xiaomi’s track record of adopting Qualcomm’s latest flagship SoCs.

Following Xiaomi, the OnePlus 13 and iQOO 13 series are expected to follow suit. Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi is also reportedly working on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 phone, likely from the Redmi K80 series.

Moreover, it’s likely that the Samsung Galaxy S25 series, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7, and Sony Xperia 1 VII will also adopt the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip, following in the footsteps of their predecessors which uses the current-gen Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.

6. Conclusion

So Qualcomm is introducing several new features with the 8 Gen 4, including completely new Oryon CPU cores, an architecture without efficiency cores, and TSMC’s advanced 3nm node process. These advancements are expected to improve the performance of flagship phones in 2025.

However, consumers will have to wait for independent reviews and real-world testing before making a final judgment on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. Whether it delivers a true leap forward or becomes a power-hungry powerhouse disguised in a bulky chassis remains to be seen.

The ultrawide cameras could also see upgrades to 1/2.3-inch sensors while retaining the two-layer transistor pixel technology. However, the primary camera will retain its 1/1.3” sensor size.

Intriguingly, the leak also hints at the possible discontinuation of the Xperia 5 series, leaving the Xperia 1 as Sony’s sole high-end smartphone line. Motorola is preparing to release its new Razr 50 series in China on June 25. In a recent teaser on X (formerly Twitter), the brand has also confirmed that the global debut of these flip phones will also take place on June 25 Here’s what buyers can expect from the Razr 50 series.

YouTube is Testing Community Notes Feature to Add Context to Videos

To combat misinformation and provide additional context for viewers, YouTube is testing out a new feature called Community Notes. Inspired by a similar feature on X, Community Notes allows viewers to contribute short blurbs that offer clarification or background information on specific videos.

The feature appears to be very similar to Twitter’s Community Notes Feature

The pilot program is currently limited to a select group of users in the United States who will be invited via email or through YouTube Creator Studio. To participate, users must have an active YouTube account in good standing. During this initial phase, YouTube will rely on “third-party evaluators” to assess the helpfulness of submitted notes. This feedback will be used to train the system and ensure that only the most valuable contributions are displayed publicly.

Once the pilot expands beyond the initial group, viewers will be able to rate the helpfulness of Community Notes using a three-tier system: “helpful,” “somewhat helpful,” or “unhelpful.” They can also provide specific reasons for their ratings, such as whether the note cites credible sources or is written in a clear and concise manner.

A unique “bridging-based algorithm” will determine which notes appear under videos. This algorithm prioritizes notes that receive positive ratings from a diverse range of viewers, even those with differing viewpoints. While there’s always a risk of misuse, YouTube hopes this approach will minimize the spread of misinformation.

The core concept behind Community Notes is similar to a feature introduced by Twitter during the Jack Dorsey era and later expanded globally under Elon Musk‘s ownership. While Twitter’s notes haven’t necessarily solved all accuracy issues, YouTube appears to believe the crowd-sourced approach holds value. The pilot program will begin on mobile devices for users in the United States. YouTube acknowledges there may be bumps along the road as they refine the system, and a wider rollout in the US is expected in the coming weeks and months.

Dell launched the Snapdragon X Plus powered XPS 13 9345 laptop last month. Now the machine is on sale in China for a price tag of 11,999 yuan (US pricing is around $1300).

The body is made of aluminum and uses CNC precision cutting technology. The laptop comes with a thickness of 14.8mm and weighs only 1.17kg.

Notably, the new chip enables real-time noise reduction for better video calling.

Inside, the machine equips the newly released Arm-based Snapdragon X Plus chipset. This chipset comes with a total of 10 Qualcomm Oryon CPU cores, an integrated Adreno GPU that delivers “delivers graphics-intensive presentations and entertainment”, and the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU that delivers 45TOPS AI performance (which is reportedly the world’s fastest NPU for laptops as of now).

The chipset also focuses on a power-efficient operation, which has enabled the manufacturer to create such a lightweight machine without aggressive cooling or a massive battery.

Speaking of memory and storage, the laptop is equipped with 16GB LPDDR5x RAM with a speed of up to 8400MT/s and comes with 1TB SSD. You can also expand the storage to up to 4TB.

The solar panel is designed specifically for outdoor cameras and only supports the Xiaomi BW500 outdoor camera, The new solar panels deliver power up to 5W for the outdoor camera. The camera solar panel was first unveiled recently but the pricing details were missing.

Samsung may discontinue its partnership with AMD in the near future and develop its own GPU

Samsung has been using Xclips GPUs (built in collaboration with AMD) in its flagship Exynos chips. The GPUs equip AMD RDNA graphics IP and were projected to offer reasonably better ray tracing performance.

However, earlier last month tipster @rquandt hinted that Samsung may discontinue the partnership with AMD after 2025. “In 2026, Samsung seems to aim for the release of a next-gen flagship SoC feat its own GPU,” he noted.

In the latest news, the Korean platform Naver hints at the same. Reporter Jinsol Lee talks about Samsung considering investing in GPU at a board meeting. According to the report, a company executive at the management committee within the board of directors has decided to invest in GPUs. At the management level, the investment is expected to strengthen the company’s “GPU-related business competitiveness or to expand its internal information technology (IT) infrastructure.”

This is a bit unusual because the investment agenda has so far focused on the memory chips and the foundry. This is the first time that Samsung Electronics has decided to invest in GPUs at the management committee since 2012 when the agenda was made public.

In the Management Committee meeting, memory semiconductor and foundry factory construction and facility investment were reviewed. The company is also investing in AI chips and advanced packaging methods.

Given Samsung’s self-developed GPU manages to compete with the Adreno or Mali GPUs, it will offer the company more control over its products and will also likely save some costs.

That being said, the Exynos 2500 will still feature an RDNA GPU – the Xclips 950. However, a recent rumor also says that Samsung may not even use the chipset in the Galaxy S25 series at all. Nonetheless, we are still quite a few months away from the launch and more information should surface going forward.

Samsung Galaxy S25 series could get Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chips in all regions: Kuo

With the launch of the Galaxy S24 series behind them, Samsung is currently focusing on introducing its upcoming foldables. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 are both expected to be unveiled at the July 10 launch event in Paris. That said, Samsung has already started working on the Galaxy S25 series smartphones as well.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 Phones

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has shared some news, that puts the brand in an unfavorable situation, however, brings joy to users in many regions. As per Kuo, the Samsung Galaxy S25 series will be exclusively powered by Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor. For many years, Samsung has shipped its flagship Galaxy S series smartphones with its in-house Exynos processors in many regions across the globe. Around 60% of this year’s Galaxy S24 series devices were powered by the Exynos 2400 processor.

However, it looks like the Exynos 2500 chip may not ship due to Samsung’s lower-than-expected 3nm yield. Kuo also points out that since Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will see a price increase of 25-30%, the company is expected to significantly benefit from this increase in orders from Samsung.

Reports indicate that Samsung’s second-generation 3nm chips are experiencing low yield rates, as low as 20%. This poses a challenge to Samsung’s plan to increase the use of its in-house Exynos chips, replacing those manufactured by TSMC, particularly in light of rising costs for TSMC’s advanced nodes. Given these production issues, it remains unclear how Samsung will manage to control costs for the upcoming Galaxy S25 series.
