While the focus has been on the hardware the Mate 10 is expected to feature, we almost forgot the flagship will also get a new EMUI 6 interface based on Android 8.0 Oreo. Before now, little is known about the new interface, like it would be based on Android Oreo but a new leak has emerged which shows the real features EMUI 6 would bring with it.

The screenshots of a Mate 9 running on Android Oreo-based firmware is the new leak here and it comes courtesy of XDA Developers. The screenshots reveal details such as Picture-in-Picture mode will be one of the features included in EMUI 6. One of the screenshots shows the Background app notification of Android Oreo will be included. Users of smartphones which have gotten updates to Oreo have reported persistent ‘app is running in the background’ notification and that is same with the EMUI-based Oreo.

Read Also: EMUI 6 Said To Be Based On Android 8 Oreo, Starting With Mate 10

Basically, EMUI 6 will come with features of Android Oreo, most of which we already know since Google announced its latest OS version. The new features that would likely be on the EMUI 6includes a screen resolution option in display settings which will let users switch between HD and Full HD resolution mode (720p & 1080p).This will definitely be a good power conservation mechanism. Also, EMUI 6 looks to be bringing the option of hiding the navigation bar by including a new button which you can place on the navigation bar. That button will add a small arrow to the left side of the navigation bar and with a swipe from the bottom, you get to hide or show the nav bar. You can check out more features of the new EMUI 6 from the screenshots below or use the source link below to go check out XDA’s post.

As is very well known, Huawei does not use stock Android OS but has its Emotion UI (EMUI) and would be looking to release a next-gen EMUI 6.0 for the Mate 10.

A screenshot of a phone showing the EMUI 6.0 closed beta system update has been revealed on Weibo. From the screenshot, it is very clear that the EMUI 6.0 will be based on Android 8.0 Oreo. That means EMUI 6 will bring along with it the stunning features of Android O, just as unveiled and this includes faster performance, Picture-In-Picture, Autofill, Split screen, ease of operation and many others.

Read More: UI Showdown: MIUI 8 vs Flyme 6 vs EMUI 5.0 vs Smartisan OS 3.0

Another aspect is that the Mate 10 will also run on EMUI 6 just the same way the Mate 9 was the first device to run on EMUI 5.0 last year. The closed beta may have begun but sure, it is really closed because the Mate 10 would have it first and the device is yet to go public. So, the most likely postulation is that Huawei’s software engineers are likely doing the testing. The Mate 10 is expected on October 16 and that is when we expect to see the EMUI 6 unveiled. After its launch, Huawei will then start announcing upgrades for other models to Android 8-based EMUI 6.

This will apply to both Huawei and Honor branded smartphones.

This hasn’t come to our surprise as the current EMUI 5/5.1 are based on Android Nougat (7.0). The source has stated that the EMUI 6 will provide a more ‘enhanced user experience’ in comparison to the preceding EMUI 5, which is certainly welcoming, even though EMUI 5/5.1 has already provided notable smooth experiences for both current Huawei and Honor users.

Yu Chengdong (Richard Yu) has also confirmed that Huawei is already working on Android 8.0 for its future EMUI, however, the source was not clear about what current devices will get the upgrade. We can speculate that the current latest devices should expect an Android 8.0 update, for example, Huawei Mate 9 and the Honor 9.

The CEO has also claimed that the EMUI 6 will run far smoother than Xiaomi’s MIUI 8, however, specifics were not exchanged in the conference. We currently know that the EMUI 5 comes with a large collection of features in comparison to stock Android Nougat, thus we are expecting the EMUI 6 to also pack a similar experience of mass feature choice. We will also expect Huawei to provide additional features into the upcoming EMUI 6 that Android 8.0 will also provide.

If we take Google’s several released developer previews of Android 8.0 as a base of our assumptions, we can predict the possible features that may come to Huawei’s EMUI 6. For example, the improved notification shade and picture-in-picture feature. A more notable improvement we expect to see in EMUI’s adaptation is improved battery consumption on Google’s Android 8.0.

As a result, the major changes we expect to see from EMUI 5 to EMUI 6 are likely to be the changes made from Android 7.0 to Android 8.0. Yu Chengdong hasn’t confirmed this; however, according to the source, Google is expected to release Android 8.0 “O” before the launch of Google Pixel 2 line-up, leading to the possibility of Huawei/Honor devices to come with Android 8.0-based EMUI 6 before the turn of this year.
