Google AI Plus: What do you get?

The search engine giant just released the Google AI Plus with access to a bunch of its latest AI models. In other words, it arrives with integration to all the newest AI models like Gemini 3 Pro that function across the brand’s vast array of apps. Advanced models like Gemini 3 Pro are built into the Gemini app, bringing Google’s smartest model yet. Alongside this, you also get the Nano Banana Pro, which is Google’s cutting edge creative tool that brings you advanced image generation and editing.

Subscribers can even generate videos and use creative tools like Flow from the Gemini app. Google AI Plus users’ Google accounts as a whole benefit from this service since Gemini is built directly into crucial apps like Google Docs and Gmail that help improve your workspace experience and productivity. Last but not the least, the plan brings wider access to NotebookLM tool for deep research and document analysis and 200GB of cloud storage, which is shared between Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail.

The Google AI Plus plan has just been unveiled in India with a starting price tag of Rs 399 per month. But as an introductory offer, the brand is only charging Rs 199 for the first six months. Meanwhile, the Google AI Pro model which typically costs Rs 1,950 is free for the first month.

Google announced the sixth generation of its Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) for data centers, codenamed Trillium, at its I/O 2024 Developer Conference today. While a specific launch date wasn’t revealed, Google assured attendees that Trillium will be available later this year.

The Trillium TPU also has doubled memory bandwidth

Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized Google’s longstanding commitment to AI innovation, stating, “Google was born for this moment. We have been a pioneer in GPUs for more than a decade.”

Pichai then unveiled the impressive performance gains of Trillium. Compared to the fifth generation TPU, Trillium boasts a staggering 4.7 times improvement in computing power per chip. Google achieved this by enhancing the chip’s matrix multiplication unit (MXU) and boosting the overall clock speed. Additionally, Trillium benefits from doubled memory bandwidth.

Trillium incorporates Google’s third-generation SparseCore technology, described as “a purpose-built accelerator for common large-scale tasks in advanced ranking and recommendation workloads.” This allows Trillium TPUs to train models faster and deliver lower latency when serving those models.

Energy efficiency was another key focus for Google. Pichai highlighted Trillium as the company’s “most energy-efficient” TPU yet. This is particularly significant considering the ever-growing demand for AI chips, which can have a substantial environmental impact. Google claims Trillium offers a 67% improvement in energy efficiency compared to the previous generation.

Apollo Radiology in India is leveraging these AI models for 3 million free screenings

• TB detection: A shortage of radiologists to analyze chest X-rays, crucial for TB screening, is a major hurdle. Google’s AI system aids in early TB detection by analyzing these scans.
• Lung and breast cancer screening: AI assists with both broader screening accessibility and identifying incidental nodules in lung scans and mammograms, helping radiologists prioritize cases.

Over the next decade, Apollo Radiology International aims to leverage these AI models for 3 million free screenings for TB, lung cancer, and breast cancer. This initiative has the potential to significantly improve access to timely care for hundreds of thousands in India.

Google.org also supports ARMMAN, a mobile service offering targeted preventive care messages for expecting and new mothers. Google AI technology helps predict women at risk of dropping out of healthcare programs, allowing health workers to proactively follow up.

This collaboration is a clear example of AI bridging the healthcare gap in resource-limited regions, enabling earlier diagnoses and improved health outcomes. In a groundbreaking achievement, Google DeepMind, a subsidiary of Alphabet (GOOGL), has harnessed the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the structures of over 2 million new materials. This milestone, published in the prestigious science journal Nature, holds the potential to reshape various industries by significantly improving the production of batteries, solar panels, and computer chips.

Traditionally, the discovery and synthesis of new materials have been both costly and time-consuming, often spanning a decade or more. However, DeepMind’s innovative AI, trained on data from the Materials Project, an international research group founded in 2011, has managed to predict the structure of nearly 400,000 hypothetical material designs. This breakthrough is expected to shorten the typically lengthy 10 to 20-year timeline for material development.

The GNoME Deep Learning Tool, a crucial component of DeepMind’s arsenal, identified an astounding 2.2 million new inorganic crystals, with 380,000 identified as the most stable for experimental research. This predictive accuracy extends to the stability of crystal structures, exemplified by the discovery of 52,000 new layered compounds similar to graphene and 528 potential lithium-ion conductors, a remarkable 25 times more than previous studies.

To facilitate further advancements, DeepMind is taking a collaborative approach by sharing its vast dataset with the research community through the Next Gen Materials Project. The data encompasses all of GNoME’s discoveries and predictions, providing researchers with free access to explore and experiment with the newfound treasure trove of material structures.

A significant leap towards efficient material synthesis has been made possible through DeepMind’s collaboration with the Berkeley Lab, resulting in the creation of a robotic laboratory. This autonomous lab successfully synthesized 41 of the newly discovered materials, demonstrating the transformative potential of AI in experimental synthesis.

Ekin Dogus Cubuk, a research scientist at DeepMind, expressed hope for substantial improvements in experimentation, autonomous synthesis, and machine learning models. The shared optimism extends to Kristin Persson, director of the Materials Project, who emphasized the need to shrink timelines for material development. Despite industry tendencies to be cautious about cost increases, the collaborative breakthroughs driven by AI may reshape dynamics, potentially reducing the time it takes for new materials to become cost-effective.

The convergence of AI and material science showcased by DeepMind’s achievement represents a radical acceleration in technological development. The impact on industries such as energy storage, electronics, and beyond is poised to unlock untold paths of innovation.

Google has unveiled the experimental AI note-taking assistant, the NotebookLM. The NotebookLM helps to summarize documents, answer questions, and generate ideas, among several other functionalities. The AI-driven initiative had previously been mentioned by Google as Project Tailwind during the 2023 Google I/O event.

The Google NotebookLM is being introduced by Google Labs and is offered as a novel approach to note-taking software. The NotebookLM has a robust language model at the heart of its functionality. It provides a quick, smart, and innovative way of poring over tons of text and rapidly extracting the key points in a summarized version. It will be useful for students, academics, knowledge professionals, and more.

The new Google NotebookLM tool assists users to make connections from loads of materials quickly. It harnesses the potential of language models alongside user content to deliver swift and telling insights.

The NotebookLM is like a virtual research assistant that is capable of summarizing facts, exploring and developing complex ideas, and brainstorming new connections. Unlike traditional AI solutions, NotebookLM allows users to ground the AI in their notes and sources. This helps to train the AI to be knowledgeable with the relevant information for the user. This can be incorporated into Google Docs while other formats are coming.

The NotebookLM was developed by a small team at Google Labs. It comes with sufficient privacy levers that enable the tool to operate independently based on the sources available. The tool is still under development and Google hopes to gather feedback for its improvement. Google has already opened a waitlist of early adopters.

A new research on Artificial Intelligence has shown that U.S tech giant Google is on top on their game when it comes to the AI market. Google’s AI was compared with those of co-travellers in the AI market like Apple, Baidu, and Microsoft but they all fail to match the brainpower displayed by Google’s AI.  The report interestingly shows that Google’s AI is almost at the same level as the level of intelligent a normal six-year-old child would display.

The study seems to have been conducted last with Google’s AI having an IQ score of 47.28 points. This is just some figures lower than the IQ of a 6-year-old child whose IQ score is 55.5 points. Interestingly, Google’s AI intelligent qotient was just 26.5 points back in 2014, meaning that the score nearly doubled in a span of only three years. Google is closely followed by Chinese web services company Baidu’s AI with 32.92 points. Baidu is one of the largest internet companies and one of the top class AI leaders in the world, so this feat isn’t so surprising. Apple’s Siri is not even in the top 3 spots as Microsoft’s Bing AI scored 31.98 points to occupy the third spot ahead of Siri which sits at the fourth spot with 23.94 points. 

The analysis is based on considerations such as their amount of available data, usefulness, and ability to synthesize information. The ranking also considers the form that the AI is intended to be used. All the AI considered are cloud-based, so they cannot achieve a high ranking based on the size of information available to them alone. Their ability to demonstrate understanding, critical thinking, learning, and synthesis affects how well they will rank which affects their weight in the total IQ score.

Google recently unveiled its latest smart home products including the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. One major thing that was consistent during the announcement was the improved AI capabilities of the smartphones. This is an indication that the AI could score higher when a test is conducted this year.
