Huawei’s HarmonyOS software has passed a new shipping milestone, according to a report by research firm Canalys. The Chinese tech company has reportedly shipped over 100 million HarmonyOS-powered smartphones since the platform rollout in 2019.

To be exact, the actual figure is 103 million phones by the end of 2024. Out of which, Huawei sold 46 million HarmonyOS handhelds in 2024 alone. 

These numbers suggest that despite limited international reach, Huawei has a strong domestic presence, particularly in China, where HarmonyOS has become a central part of the company’s hardware ecosystem.

HarmonyOS powers the entire Huawei ecosystem

And the growth isn’t limited to smartphones. Canalys notes Huawei has also shipped 21 million HarmonyOS tablets to date, with 10.5 million of those units sold in 2024. 

The OS was first launched in 2019 and deployed widely on consumer devices by mid-2021. It has since become the default platform across much of Huawei’s product line.

HarmonyOS now extends beyond phones and tablets to wearables, audio products, smart home gear, and increasingly, PCs. Speaking of which, Canalys notes that Huawei shipped around 4.2 million personal computers within China, of which 3.2 million were notebooks. 

As for what’s next, Huawei is reportedly gearing up for the next major iteration of HarmonyOS. Version 6.0 is expected later this year and will likely lean further into AI and distributed architecture. 

According to Canalys, these elements—along with Huawei’s control over hardware and software—are helping the company position HarmonyOS as a long-term alternative to global platforms, at least within its home market.

HarmonyOS powers more devices than iOS in China

According to new data from Counterpoint Research, HarmonyOS has now overtaken iOS in mainland China. Android remains the dominant player, holding 64% of the market in Q4 2024, while HarmonyOS has a 19% share—edging past iOS by two percentage points. In fact, Huawei maintained its lead over Apple in software throughout 2024.

It’s a major milestone for Huawei, a company that once struggled to keep its smartphone business afloat after U.S. sanctions. Now not only has it surpassed Apple in the software front, the Chinese tech giant is also leading over Apple in both smartphone and tablet market share in the mainland. 

According to Counterpoint’s smartphone sales data, Huawei claimed the top spot in China’s smartphone market during Q4 2024, securing an 18.1% share. This marks the first time the company has regained a strong foothold in its home market since the U.S. ban five years ago. Huawei’s smartphone sales surged 15.5% year-over-year, driven by the success of the Nova 13 and Mate 70 series.

Counterpoint also predicts that HarmonyOS adoption will continue to rise, thanks in part to government-backed subsidies. In an effort to stimulate the economy, the Chinese government is offering a CNY 500 ($70) subsidy on smartphones priced under CNY 6,000 (just over $800).

Globally, however, the landscape looks different. Android still leads with a 74% market share, though that’s down from 80% in Q3 2024. Apple, meanwhile, has increased its share from 16% to 22% over the same period. Huawei’s global share has remained steady at 4% since early 2024.

A beta tester recently shared on Reddit that an Android emulator called “EasyAbroad” can be found on Huawei’s AppGallery. This emulator was designed specifically for Huawei users working outside of China, who need access to Google Mobile Services (GMS) to use popular Android apps like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Google Maps, and more.

With the “EasyAbroad” tool, users can install these Android apps directly onto their HarmonyOS NEXT device, though with some limitations. The Android apps are contained within a separate app store that appears as a folder on the home screen. While users can run these apps from within the folder, they cannot place them as regular icons on their main screen. Additionally, users may encounter issues with receiving notifications from those Android apps, which could affect the overall experience.

The key behind this functionality is microG, a free, open-source replacement for Google Play Services, which allows Android apps to function without requiring a Google account or direct connection to Google’s servers. This solution ensures that most Android apps run smoothly, even without access to the full Google ecosystem.

This development is significant for Huawei users, as it provides a workaround for the limited app ecosystem available on HarmonyOS NEXT. While Huawei’s AppGallery is growing, it still lacks the extensive range of apps found on Google’s Play Store. With the public beta rollout of HarmonyOS NEXT just around the corner (October 8th), gamers on Huawei devices finally have something to look forward to. 

Tencent, the gaming giant, has released native HarmonyOS NEXT versions of its two popular titles – PUBG Mobile and Honor of Kings. 

These games are currently in closed beta testing, but a Weibo user, Jerroid_Tech, has given us a preview of how the native HarmonyOS NEXT version of Honor of Kings performs. The good news? Its performance appears to match what high-end Android phones deliver.

Native HarmonyOS NEXT game delivers performance as good as flagship Android phones

The test focused on demanding gameplay conditions. Jerroid_Tech used Sima Yi, a hero with a wide field of view, in a 15-minute, 5v5 ranked match with frequent team fights. The game ran at HD graphics settings and 1080p resolution on a Pura 70 Pro+ powered by the Kirin 9010 processor.

Despite these demanding settings, the HarmonyOS NEXT version of Honor of Kings maintained a smooth average frame rate of 120.73. Jerroid_Tech mentions the game even has water surface reflection effects enabled, which puts extra strain on the GPU. Still, the performance remained impressive.

On the thermal side, the peak temperature reached 48.07°C on the back of the phone and 43.2°C on the front. The game consumed 4.9W of power and used 2.45GB of RAM during gameplay.

Although there’s no mention of frame rate drops or stutters, the test shows the phone can deliver a smooth gaming experience. While there’s no direct comparison with Android phones yet, we can tell that these results are comparable to flagship devices running the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. Also, it’s important to remember this is a preview version, not the final public release.

So, should you be hyped?

Based on this limited test, the native HarmonyOS NEXT games seem capable of offering a gameplay experience and performance on par with high-end Android devices, even in demanding situations. 

This is a promising sign for new operating system, and especially for mobile gamers with Huawei phones. However, it’s important to keep in mind that this is just a single test of a closed beta version.

We’ll need to wait for the wider rollout to see how Honor of Kings and other games perform on HarmonyOS NEXT across a broader range of devices in real-world scenarios.

To build a more robust app ecosystem for users, the company has teamed up with major players like Ant Group, China UnionPay, and iFlytek. Plus, their developer base has also increased – the Huawei Developer Alliance now has 6.75 million registered developers which is a tenfold increase in just five years, says Huawei. 

The company is also demonstrably committed to developer support. They are investing over 6 billion yuan specifically to fuel developer innovation within the ecosystem.

Huawei seems confident in its progress. Their President of Mobile Cloud, Zhu Yonggang, even claims HarmonyOS NEXT has accomplished in a year what took Android and iOS “17 years.” That’s a bold statement, but only time will tell.

While the company doesn’t specify the exact verticals, many of China’s major tech giants have partnered with Huawei to develop native HarmonyOS NEXT apps. So these numbers and claims aren’t surprising to hear.

The figure comes alongside a hefty investment from Huawei, with the company reportedly allocating 6 billion yuan ($851 million) annually to attract developers. This commitment, combined with over 6.75 million registered developers on the HUAWEI Developer Programs, is fueling the expansion of the HarmonyOS app landscape.

Industry experts see this growth as a sign of HarmonyOS’s increasing maturity, particularly in the Internet of Things (IoT) space. “Low-cost computing is a key concern for IoT customers,” says Fu Liang, a tech analyst based in Beijing. “The HarmonyOS system has seen rising adoption in recent years, catering to this need.”

Huawei‘s homegrown operating system, HarmonyOS, seems to be finally shedding its training wheels. The company has confirmed to the South China Morning Post that HarmonyOS NEXT, a native version free from Android’s underlying libraries, will launch by the end of this month.

According to Chen Xinxin, general manager of HarmonyOS Industry Solutions, the new mobile platform is “entirely independently developed and autonomous.”

Likewise, the transition isn’t happening in a vacuum. Major Chinese developers across software, gaming, entertainment, and e-commerce have pledged support for native HarmonyOS apps. JD.com, China’s e-commerce giant, recently completed its own native app slated for launch alongside HarmonyOS NEXT.

This year was Huawei’s first time with a central booth at ChinaJoy, strategically placed within the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. 

According to the South China Morning Post, long lines formed at the HarmonyOS booth’s four dedicated sections. Attendees participated in interactive activities, received promotional gifts, and played games on Huawei’s latest smartphones.

“It was great to see Naraka: Bladepoint Mobile, a personal favorite, running on the new system,” said Xu Xiaoyi, a 25-year-old Shanghai resident. Xu, who originally planned to visit NetEase’s booth, was drawn to Huawei’s display and hoped more international titles would support HarmonyOS Next in the future. This growing interest in the platform and its native apps was evident, with the event attracting 369,000 visitors.

Huawei’s presence at ChinaJoy highlights the company’s efforts to build excitement for HarmonyOS Next. The current version has already surpassed Apple’s iOS to become the second-largest mobile operating system in mainland China in the first quarter of 2024. 

Launched in August 2019 as an alternative to Android, HarmonyOS emerged in response to US trade restrictions on Huawei. These restrictions, imposed by the Entity List, prevent the company from acquiring US-origin software, chips, and other technologies without government approval.

Huawei is expected to unveil a new Kirin chipset, the Kirin 9100, later this year. This chip is rumored to power the upcoming Mate 70 series which will also be the first Huawei phone to come pre-installed with HarmonyOS NEXT.

There are rumors that the Kirin 9100 could mark a significant performance leap for the Chinese tech giant. However, there are doubts about this since Huawei and its chip manufacturer, SMIC, lack the latest chip manufacturing infrastructure due to the US trade ban.

As a result, Kirin chips have so far struggled to compete with offerings from Qualcomm and MediaTek. The Kirin 9100, however, might be different. A fresh new rumor suggests it could outperform Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

The news comes from an X tipster, jasonwill, who seems confident that the upcoming Kirin chip will surpass the performance of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. If Huawei’s next-gen Kirin SoC is indeed faster, this would be a monumental gain compared to the current-best Kirin 9010, which struggles to compete even with mid-range chips like the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2.

Additionally, the tipster claims that the Kirin 9100’s performance could lead to an improved user experience, even if its on-paper specifications “may not match those of the 8gen3”.

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Nio is reportedly exploring the potential of humanoid robots in its production lines. A recent report by China Star Market revealed that Nio is testing the Kuavo robot, developed by Leju Robotics, at its factories.

What’s particularly noteworthy is that Kuavo is the first HarmonyOS-powered robot unveiled by Huawei at the HDC 2024 developer conference in June. 

Nio is not the only car manufacturer exploring the use of humanoid robots in assembly lines. However, it appears to be at the forefront of this development. 

Prior to the testing of Kuavo, another humanoid robot, the Walker S from UBTech Robotics, underwent training at a Nio factory in February 2024. This marked the first instance of real-world training for the Walker S robot within a new energy vehicle (NEV) factory setting. 

During the training, the Walker S utilized its image capture and transmission capabilities for quality control tasks like inspecting door locks, seat belts, and headlight covers. Additionally, the robot was able to affix vehicle logos as shown in a video shared by UBTech Robotics.

Nio’s interest in humanoid robotics extends beyond individual robots. In April 2024, Yi Peng, Nio’s head of humanoid robots for intellectual engineering, revealed the formation of a “squad” of humanoid robots at the China Humanoid Robot Ecology Conference. Yi also outlined two key areas of focus for Nio’s humanoid robotics endeavors:

Following months of speculation, Huawei has officially confirmed the launch of the Mate 70 series for the fourth quarter of 2024. This places the release window somewhere between October to December. 

The confirmation comes from Huawei Consumer Business Chairman Yu Chengdong, who revealed that the Mate 70 series will be the first to come pre-installed with the stable version of HarmonyOS NEXT.

Huawei launched the HarmonyOS NEXT at the HDC Developer Conference event today. It completely breaks away from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) codebase which means Huawei devices with this version of HarmonyOS will not support Android apps altogether.

The upcoming Mate 70 will be the first to get a stable version of the new OS Following its release, Huawei is expected to roll out the major software update to other devices. The company has already begun Beta testing the OS on the Mate 60 series and a bunch of other devices starting today.

While details about the Mate 70 series hardware are scarce, leaks suggest that the Pro model will maintain the triple punch-hole display design seen in its predecessors, though it’s unclear if this extends to the entire lineup. 

To recall, the Mate 60 Pro features a 13-megapixel ultrawide selfie camera, a 3D ToF sensor, and additional sensors and lasers for 3D face mapping. The Mate 70 Pro is likely to continue using the same set of front sensors.

The rear camera system is another area of focus for leaks. The Mate 70 series might utilize upcoming Omnivision sensors for improved image and video capture. Additionally, the top model in the line could feature a retractable lens similar to the one in the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra.

For years, iPhone users have relied on enterprise certificates to install apps that haven’t been blessed by Apple‘s App Store. Now, it appears Huawei‘s HarmonyOS NEXT is taking a similar path.

In a recent developer update, Huawei announced a new method for sideloading apps in its OS. The process involves developers compiling and packaging their apps with certificates and profiles issued internally by their organization.

The final package and a description file are then uploaded to a server or cloud storage for users to download and install directly.

These apps are not intended for a wide consumer audience but rather for specific user groups, such as internal enterprise tools or programs.

According to Huawei, the feature is intended for “HarmonyOS applications that are not suitable or do not want to be publicly released on Huawei App Market.” 

Developers will also have the option of leveraging Huawei’s AppGallery Connect (AGC) feature for small-scale distribution through designated channels.

While this grants developers more freedom, it does have its own set of limitations. Currently, the internal application release method only supports HarmonyOS apps built using the Stage model, and features like meta-services are not yet compatible.

Additionally, users will need to manually enable the app for it to run on the device. They can do so by navigating to Settings > System > Enterprise Device and Application Management > Enterprise Application Management and manually grant permission for the app to function.

Huawei’s move isn’t entirely unexpected. Sideloading apps offers great flexibility, especially for developers who want to bypass App Market approval for specific use cases.

However, there could also be some security concerns. Unlike the curated offerings of the App Market, sideloaded apps lack official oversight, increasing the risk of malware or compromised software.

Huawei‘s response to the U.S. trade ban isn’t just focused on hardware efforts. The company is also making a major leap in software development with HarmonyOS Next, a new operating system that completely ditches from Google’s Android app support.

Now, a fresh report by Nikkei Asia suggests that Huawei will finally depart completely from Google’s Android operating system this year. The new HarmonyOS Next will ship first with Huawei Mate 70 series smartphones. 

The new OS reportedly offers improved memory efficiency and on-device AI capabilities. However, the true test lies in app availability. 

While HarmonyOS Next currently has over 4,000 apps, including popular names like Alipay and McDonald’s, Huawei has set its sights on a much larger library, aiming for 5000 within the year, and top 500,000 eventually. 

The success of last year’s Mate 60 series has catalyzed Chinese corporations and businesses to join Huawei in developing apps for HarmonyOS Next, as noted in the report.

The company then launched the Nova 12 series and recently debuted the Huawei Pura 70 series, all of which have been well-received by consumers. 

TechInsights, a Canadian research firm, predicts that Huawei will sell 10 million Pura 70 handsets this year. The upcoming Mate 70 series is expected to drive the sales numbers further taking Huawei back to the top of China’s smartphone market after a long absence. 

WeChat, a dominant messaging app in China with over a billion users, holds significant sway over HarmonyOS Next’s fate. Huawei’s ability to secure support from such major players will be crucial for the platform’s survival within China.

If successful, HarmonyOS Next will certainly be a major competitor to Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, creating a three-way battle for smartphone dominance. However, the road ahead is not without challenges, and only time will tell if Huawei can navigate them effectively.

Huawei is working hard on HarmonyOS NEXT, its new iteration of the operating system that departs from Android app support entirely. The company is actively collaborating with major Chinese giants to build native apps specifically for HarmonyOS NEXT.

A fresh new leak suggests that the current development build of HarmonyOS NEXT offers a user experience comparable to existing software. 

Words for it come from tech tipster Digital Chat Station who revealed that many “commonly used apps” possibly in China are actively being adapted for HarmonyOS NEXT. Huawei is also courting new partners to expand its app ecosystem.

However, according to the insider, these apps still lack some functions, possibly due to ongoing optimizations. Nevertheless, we are optimistic that these features will be added until the software reaches its beta phase.

Speaking of which, Huawei is currently preparing a testing version of HarmonyOS NEXT for user trials. The company will likely unveil the beta variant at the HDC 2024 event that’s happening in June. By then, we might see some significant, currently undisclosed changes.

The leak offers a glimpse into the current development stage of HarmonyOS NEXT. The software has a way to go before its official release, and Huawei will continue to improve its core operating system functionality continuously.

Moreover, previous leaks suggest that HarmonyOS NEXT might debut the upcoming Mate 70 series smartphones. Huawei’s Rotating Chairman, Xu Zhijun, himself hinted at a new software release alongside the Mate 70 flagship later this year, which lines up with the leaks.

While an official launch date for both products remains unknown, rumors suggest that they may be launched sometime in October.

Huawei‘s homegrown operating system, HarmonyOS, is getting closer to a full public release. Today, blogger @Flanker_017 on Weibo shared images revealing the user interface of HarmonyOS NEXT running on a real device (Mate 60).

The commercial version is expected to arrive in Q4

The images showcase a new design for the OS, but also a significant change under the hood – native Android apps are no longer supported. This could be a potential hurdle for users who rely on a mix of Android and HarmonyOS apps. The blogger highlights the concern for apps that store a lot of local data, like messaging apps and note-taking tools. Without a clear solution to migrate or access this data, users might face a frustrating experience even if they can download the apps again.

Additionally, the blogger said that the kernel is indeed a new microkernel. A Linux compatibility module has been integrated to facilitate Linux syscalls. This news comes after Huawei’s HarmonyOS Eco Thousand Sails Sailing Ceremony in January, where they announced the developer preview program for HarmonyOS NEXT Milky Way Edition. The developer Beta program is expected to launch in Q2 (April-June) of this year, with the commercial version arriving in Q4 (October-December).

Given the timeline, there’s still time for Huawei to address user experience concerns like app compatibility and data migration. With a complete overhaul of the app ecosystem on the horizon, it will be interesting to see how Huawei bridges the gap for users accustomed to the familiar Android app landscape.

The issue is that Huawei users outside of China thought they would also be affected by this problem, but it turns out that only Huawei users in China will be using the new operating system, so they won’t have to worry about it. Users that outside of China will still be able to use Android-based applications through the EMUI operating system. So, there’s no need to worry about this issue affecting your device. “HarmonyOS operating system is designed to meet the needs of the Internet of Everything (IoE) era. It provides a shared language that enables a smart and connected experience across different devices. HarmonyOS 4 has been installed on over 100 million devices in a short period of around three months, catering to these capabilities. However, there is currently no plan for the distribution of HarmonyOS for devices outside of China. Consequently, Huawei users outside of China will continue using their usual Android-based applications with the EMUI operating system.”
