The lineup consisted of the company’s then premium grade flagship handsets. Now, the company is officially ending the support for the Mate 20 series and will be no longer offer security updates.

The Huawei Mate 20 series featured the HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset, which was based on the 7nm process. In terms of performance, the device is still a capable handset. Although, on the Chinese tech giant’s official website, Huawei removed the names of three devices from its EMUI security update list. This included the Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, and Mate 20 X, which will no longer receive either the monthly or quarterly security patches, as per an AnTuTu report.

Editor’s Pick: Huawei MateBook X Pro 2021 with 3K display and 11th gen Intel chipset now up for pre order

At the moment, it seems that only the Mate 20 X 5G variant will receive the update, however, the rest of the Mate 20 lineup will are no longer on the security update list. The flagship series aren’t exactly dated by today’s standards but Huawei has decided to end the support of these devices. So this report arrives as a reminder to the owners of these smartphones.

For those unaware, the Huawei Mate 20 series is a flagship model from the company from back in 2018 and featured top notch specs for its time. This included the Kirin 980 SoC paired with 40W fast charging and a 40 megapixel primary rear camera, which was said to be one of the best performers of that year.

Despite releasing these 5G models in Europe a few weeks back, they are not yet available for purchase in China. This is because China’s 5G rollout is still underway (licenses have been issued to carriers) and it doesn’t make sense to release these 5G models way before there’s actually any coverage. That changes next week as ZTE has announced that its Axon 10 Pro 5G model will be up for reservations starting July 23.

Reservations commence from July 23 but there is no word on a shipping date yet. On the other hand, Huawei revealed a few days back that its Mate 20 X 5G will go on sale on July 26. This could mean that customers will probably be able to get hold of the Huawei-made 5G model before ZTE. Huawei Mate 20 X 5G was already certified by TENAA a few days back. Today, its foldable 5G phone, the Mate X was also certified by the agency.

Apart from these two, it is said that there are two more 5G Huawei devices that were certified. It’s possible that one of these two is a Honor phone since the brand’s President, George Zhao had revealed that they had a 5G model incoming later this year.

These models should soon be joined by other 5G phones from brands like OPPO, Vivo, and OnePlus. It is worth noting that Xiaomi, Lenovo, and even Samsung’s 5G models weren’t included in the first batch of 5G certifications in China.

The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G has already gone official in UAE through which its entire specifications have been revealed. Compared to the 4G LTE version of the Huawei Mate 20 X, there are some changes on its 5G variant. For 5G connectivity, the Mate 20 X 5G comes with Balong 5000 5G modem.

In order to make space for the numerous 5G antennas, Huawei has axed the 3.5mm audio jack and reduced the size of the battery to 4,200mAh on the Mate 20 X 5G. The phone also lacks a secondary speaker that is available on the Mate 20 X which features a 3.5mm headphone jack and comes with 5,000mAh battery with 22.5W fast charging support. The Mate 20 X 5G carries support for 40W SuperCharge rapid charging technology. As it can be seen in the images of the Mate 20 X 5G, its appearance is identical with its 4G LTE model. The smartphone sports a new Emerald Green color and it features a 5G logo.

According to PhoneArena, the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G achieved an amazing download speed of 694Mps and an impressive upload speed of 37.2Mps in Vodafone’s 5G network in Spain. On 4G LTE, the download speed ranges between 30 and 35 Mbps and the upload speed clocks between 10 and 15 Mbps in the U.S. The Huawei Mate 20 X was introduced as a gaming-centric phone in October 2018. With 5G connectivity, its users will be able to take advantage of cloud gaming seamlessly.

Unlike the regular Huawei Mate 20 X that comes in color options such as Midnight Blue and Phantom Silver, its newly introduced 5G variant comes in a new Emerald Green color. The smartphone comes with a 7.2-inch OLED panel with waterdrop notch. It supports full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2233 pixels and offers a screen-to-body ratio of 87.83 percent.

The Kirin 980 chipset is present under the hood of the device. The SoC is supported by 8 GB of RAM and an internal storage of 256 GB. It features a nanoSD card slot for additional storage. The Balong 5000 5G modem that comes along with it enables 5G connectivity on the smartphone. The Android 9 Pie OS runs on the device.

On the frontside of the smartphone is an f/2.0 aperture 24-megapixel selfie camera. The Mate 20 X supports dual-SIM, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, dual-band GPS frequency and USB-C. It lacks a 3.5mm audio jack. Due to modifications for housing numerous antennas inside the handset for 5G connectivity, it features a 4,200mAh battery which is considerably smaller than the 4G LTE edition that features a 5G modem. The smartphone supports 40W fast charging. Lastly, the phone comes with an IP53 rated chassis.

This is the company’s first non-foldable 5G device.

Recently, China Unicom revealed an image of the smartphone which shows that the appearance of the Huawei’s Mate 20 X 5G version is not much different from the regular version. The only difference is the 5G Logo on the back panel.

While the phone’s exact launch date or pricing information is not yet known, the device’s key specifications have leaked online, which reveals that the smartphone could be quite different from the standard Mate 20 X.

According to the leaked information, the phone will have the same screen size as the Mate 20 X 4G but will come with a smaller battery of 4200 mAh capacity, despite 5G connectivity being a substantial battery drain. However, it is also expected to come with support for 40W Super Charging — a fast charging feature.

Most of the other specs are expected to be the same as the standard model, including a huge 7.2-inch display, coupled with 8 GB of RAM. It will have a triple Leica camera setup on the back and will be powered by Huawei’s flagship Kirin 980 octa-core chipset. It will be equipped with Balong 5000 5G modem, which also powers the recently announced Mate X.

Recently, the retail box of the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G also leaked online through Weibo, which also mentions the 5G connectivity support. As for the availability, we expect the smartphone to be available soon after the launch of Huawei Mate X, which will be in June this year. As for the pricing, it’ll definitely be expansive than the Mate 20 X 4G model.

Here are a few smartphones that you can now get your hands on without emptying your pocket. Moreover, we’ll show how you extend the discounts GeekBuying is currently offering on top-branded smartphones.

Huawei Mate 20 X (6GB RAM+128GB ROM)

Huawei’s long-awaited Mate 20 X smartphone was unveiled this year in October. Sporting a mammoth7.2-inch FHD+ (2244×1080) display, it became an instant hit among smartphone lovers who fancy watching their favorite videos on a big-screen mobile device.

Huawei has collaborated with GeekBuying to bring the coveted Mate 20 X smartphone to cost-conscious at a lowered price of $835.99. This is a significant 11% drop in the device’s original asking price of $943.99.
On top of that, you can get an extra $36 off by applying coupon code GIZ_YTGCKDLH at the time of checking out. The aforesaid coupon helps you reduce your grand total to only $799.99. You can visit this link to grab this discount before the promo ends.

Huawei Honor 9 (6GB RAM+128GB ROM)

Even more than a year after hitting the store shelves, the Honor 9 smartphone continues to garner popularity among Huawei fans. This is hardly surprising given that the phone is loaded with impressive features and has top-end specs.

While its high-end features and specs completely justify the $594.99 price tag the Honor 9 smartphone normally carries, you can now buy it for only $409.99 on GeekBuying. This 31% drop in the device’s original asking price can be extended with the help of coupon code GIZ_VIJGFBCV.
The aforesaid coupon helps you save an extra $110 by bringing your cart total down to only $399.99 before you proceed to checkout. Regrettably, the promo is slated to end in just 3 days. You can follow this link to avail the discount without wasting time.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S (6GB RAM+128GB ROM)

The Mi Mix 2S smartphone was launched in April this year and there are no prizes for guessing that the phone was well-received by smartphone enthusiasts. Taking its popularity into consideration, Xiaomi is now offering the Mi Mix 2S smartphone for a slashed price of just $399.99 on GeekBuying.

This is a 33% reduction in the phone’s retail price of $599.99. Aside from taking full advantage of the aforesaid discount, you can use coupon code GIZ_XXSENXHQ and bring your grand total down to only $395.99. In other words, you can use the coupon to save an extra $126 before checking out.
The Mi Mix 2S is an irresistible smartphone that sports a 5.99 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display and is powered by a Qualcomm SDM845 Snapdragon 845 processor. Moreover, it packs an Adreno 630 GPU for unmatched gaming and video watching experience.

You can head straight to this link to check out the phone’s full specifications and get the discount before the promotion comes to an end in 1 day.

Vargo VX3 (6GB RAM+128GB ROM)

Vargo launched the VX3 smartphone earlier this month and the device is expected to sweep smartphone lovers off their feet with its awe-inspiring features and appealing design. This recently launched smartphone has now gone up for sale carrying a lowered price tag of $149.99 on GeekBuying.

This is a 34% reduction in the handset’s original selling price of $225.99. Those interested in saving an extra $16 can use coupon code GIZ_TNPFERYK and bring the already reduced grand total further down to only $149.99.
Housed in a sturdy case made using metal material, the VX3 sports plastic wire lines that bear a striking resemblance to lines found on the Meizu Pro 6 and iPhone 7 smartphones. Moreover, the device comes with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage and has a curved glass screen incorporated into the body.

You can follow this link to check out more details about the Vargo VX3 and avail the discount. Note that the promo will be valid only for 1 day.

Design

If you want a gaming-centric device even when it comes to aesthetics, then you should go for the Nubia Red Magic Mars which features an RGB illuminated LED strip and physical gaming keys on its backside. If you want the soberest and the most beautiful device, Huawei Mate 20 X looks like a normal phone but it is impressive because of its very high screen-to-body ratio. But it is a very big phablet due to its 7.2-inch display, while Razer Phone 2 is definitely the most equilibrated one for both gamers and normal users with its glass back and its water resistance (IP67).

Display

If you want the best gaming experience, the display of Razer Phone 2 is the best for you because it has a 120 Hz refresh ratio and a very high brightness, as well as a 2K resolution. It even reproduces colors in an excellent way. There are even loud stereo speakers. But if you want a bigger display for productivity, note that Huawei Mate 20 X has an almost tablet-like 7.2-inch panel.

Specs & Software

Huawei Mate 20 X has the most powerful chipset, but it comes with the lowest quantity of RAM: just 6 GB. Nubia Red Magic Mars has a still excellent SoC and it comes with up to 10 GB of RAM. These is what we read on the paper, but we will have to try the Red Magic Mars personally in order to see if there is a noticeable difference in performances.

Camera

Gaming phones are never the best camera phones, but Huawei Mate 20 X is an exception. It has the same triple camera as the Mate 20 Pro, which is the best triple camera setup actually available, with a primary 40 MP sensor, a secondary 20 MP ultrawide lens and an 8 MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom.

Battery

Given that it is the biggest phablet of the trio, Huawei Mate 20 X has the biggest battery as well. We still had no chance to test Nubia Red Magic Mars’ battery life, but it is unlikely that it will offer a longer battery life than Huawei Mate 20 X.

Price

Overall, Huawei Mate 20 X is the best smartphone of the trio, but in my opinion Razer Phone 2 is the best one for gaming due to its high refresh ratio, Dolby Atmos stereo speakers, and other important gaming-centric features. However, while Huawei Mate 20 X and Razer Phone 2 have very high listing prices (€800/$905 and €850/$961 respectively), Nubia Red Magic Mars costs just €420/$475 and it is the best one in terms of quality-price ratio.

Design

These are three devices with very different aesthetics, two of which have atypical gaming-centric designs. The one which is mostly similar to a typical smartphone is Huawei Mate 20 X, but it is also the biggest one and it is more like a tablet. Asus ROG Phone instead has a very aggressive design. I would pick the one in the middle: Razer Phone 2, not only for its more elegant looks but also because it is water resistant.

Display

When it comes to the view quality, the best display is the one of Razer Phone 2. It has a 5.72-inch 16:9 panel with Sharp’s IGZO technology. The panel has a refresh rate of 120 Hz, the highest ever seen on a phone, as well as a high Quad HD resolution. And it also features a very high brightness. On the other hand, Asus ROG Phone features the HDR technology and DCI-P3 coverage which provides better colors, but it has a lower detail as well as a lower refresh rate. Huawei Mate 20 X has the less impressive quality but it has a bigger display (7.2 inches) and it supports the M Pen with 4096 pressure levels.

Specs & Software

The most powerful hardware side actually in the market belongs to Asus ROG Phone, which boasts the best processor in the market (Qualcomm Snapdragon 845) overclocked at a frequency of 2.96 GHz). It also comes with whopping 8 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of internal storage. However, note that we still did not test the performance of the new Kirin 980 as Huawei Mate 20 X is still not in the market: it may result even better than Asus ROG Phone.

Camera

Huawei Mate 20 X has the best camera side as it features the same triple camera setup as the Huawei P20 Pro. It includes a main sensor with a huge 40 MP resolution, a secondary 20 MP ultrawide sensor and an 8 MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom. It has no rivals in the gaming smartphones sector.

Battery

Huawei Mate 20 X wins even the battery challenge because it features a bigger 5000 mAh unit, that it was possible to integrate due to its bigger dimensions. You will need a bit more to charge it, but you can get more gaming hours on a single charge. Note that Asus ROG Phone has an additional USB-C port to connect important accessories to enhance the gaming experience, such as a joypad, an external cooler and more.

Price

Huawei Mate 20 X will be soon available with a price tag of €900/$1037, Asus ROG Phone starts from €900 as well, while Razer Phone 2 starts from €850/$980. If you are specifically looking for a gaming device, then Asus ROG Phone is the choice that has most sense, but if you also need a smartphone for other advanced activities such as productivity or photography, Huawei Mate 20 X is the best choice.

Design

Yes, Huawei Mate 20 X has a higher screen-to-body ratio and a waterdrop notch, but it is not the one I prefer when it comes to the look. It is definitely too big and it is not suitable to always keep it in a pocket. Further, Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is fully waterproof thanks to the IP68 certification, so it also has a better build quality.

Display

Besides being more compact and having a waterproof certification, Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has a display with a higher view quality. I believe that iPhone Xs Max has the only display which can currently compete with the one of the Galaxy Note 9. The new Samsung flagship features an HDR10-compliant AMOLED panel with a QHD+ resolution and an incredibly high brightness. In case you hate notches, you will be glad to know that this display is notchless. Huawei Mate 20 X has just a bigger display (one of the biggest ones), which may be more comfortable for gamers.

Specs & Software

We still had no chance to test the Kirin 980 chipset which is on board of the Huawei Mate 20 X, so we can not say for sure if it will provide better performance than the SoC of Galaxy Note 9. But on the paper, it is a great processor with its 7 nm production process and we expect to perform better. On the other hand, you can get the Galaxy Note 9 with more RAM and more internal storage thanks to the 8/512 GB configuration.

Camera

2018 is the year of Huawei if we talk about mobile devices’ cameras. After releasing Huawei P20 Pro with the first triple camera setup in the world (which delivers a way better photo quality than the whole concurrency in my opinion), the Chinese company decided to include the same camera department on the Huawei Mate 20 X as well. So, the camera of Huawei Mate 20 X will shoot better photos than Samsung Galaxy Note 9. But the latter is still an amazing camera phone with its variable aperture and incredibly clear photos in every light condition.

Battery

Huawei Mate 20 X not only has a bigger battery than Samsung Galaxy Note 9, but it also features one of the biggest batteries ever seen on a flagship. Given that the phone also comes with a Full HD+ display which should consume less than Note 9’s QHD+ panel, we expect it to last a lot more than its opponent on a single charge.

Price

None of these devices is affordable. While Samsung Galaxy Note 9 was launched with a price tag of $999/€1029, Huawei Mate 20 X is going to hit the shelves with a price tag of €900. There is not a clear winner of this comparison: if you want a device that is more like a phone instead of being more like a tablet, and you also want a better display and build quality, choose the Galaxy Note 9. But if you prefer camera performance and battery life, go for the Huawei Mate 20 X. It is all about your needs.
