According to a recent Reuters report, the proposal was put forward by the COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India), and it seems to replace the current system. As of right now, the telecom operators rely on cell tower data and offer a rough estimate location. But the COAI wants the government to push A-GPS tracking.

If this goes through, the smartphones in India might operate as permanent tracking devices with location services always being enabled, with no options to switch them off. Although, in an odd turn of events, major brands that have been caught harvesting private user data have pushed back against this proposal. This includes three tech giants, namely Apple, Google, and Samsung. These brands are protesting that this is an overreach with serious legal, security, and privacy implications.

This is especially true for individuals whose roles require confidentiality, like journalists, activists, judges, security personnel, and others. The timing of this proposal arrives just after the Indian government was rolling out a controversial order that would have all new smartphones come pre-installed with a “cyber-safety” app, which was also met with pushback owing to privacy concerns. If the proposal moves forward, India could become one of the first countries to enforce mandatory, always-on GPS tracking on consumer smartphones

The minister further added that this will function similarly to DeepSeek and ChatGPT but for an affordable development cost. The government official stated that this new AI model could be ready in just 8 to 10 months.

In the event by the Indian AI Mission, Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that researchers in India have been developing an AI ecosystem framework to support its own foundational AI model. This is being developed to offer an experience tailored to Indian users. It will also understand the linguistic and contextual needs of the Indian users, bringing inclusivity while eliminating biases.

The Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology also talked about India’s computation prowess since the domestic AI model is being developed with a computational facility that employs 18,693 GPUs. To recall, ChatGPT was trained using around 25,000 GPUs, while DeepSeek was trained with 2,000 GPUs.

A typical popular AI model like ChatGPT costs about $3 to use for an hour, India’ AI model could cost just Rs 100 (roughly $1.15) thanks to government subsidy. This news also arrives after UC Berkeley researchers managed to replicate DeepSeek AI for only $30.

According to a recent survey conducted among consumers who purchased smartphones during the 2024 festive season highlights that “choice” has become the primary reason for opting for online marketplaces. While discounts and promotional offers have traditionally been strong motivators, the availability of preferred models, variants, and colors is now the leading factor influencing online purchases.

Why More Consumers Prefer Buying Smartphones Online

The survey was conducted among 2,000 respondents who bought smartphones during Flipkart’s Big Billion Days and Amazon’s Great India Festival. These two platforms remain dominant during India’s festive period, which begins in September and peaks around Diwali. Although pricing differences between online and offline channels have narrowed in recent years, online platforms continue to offer advantages that appeal to buyers.

Among the key findings, 44% of online smartphone buyers cited product choice as the main reason for purchasing online, whereas only 20% prioritized discounts. Nearly half of the respondents compared prices with offline retailers before completing their purchase, and many found no significant difference. In cases where online prices were lower, some buyers managed to negotiate similar deals at offline stores.

The flexibility of online shopping emerged as another strong factor. About 73% of respondents valued the ability to research products at their own pace, explore multiple options, and revisit their purchase decisions without pressure from sales representatives.

Confidence in online marketplaces has also grown significantly, with consumers rating their trust level at 4.5 out of 5. Amazon received a slightly higher score of 4.7, compared to Flipkart’s 4.3. Only 1% of respondents reported issues such as incorrect or incomplete deliveries.

While artificial intelligence features influenced purchasing decisions for 17% of buyers, they were not the primary factor. Customer ratings and reviews played a much bigger role, with 81% of respondents checking them before making a final decision.

Upgrades were the driving force behind most purchases, as 87% of buyers replaced their smartphones with newer models. Exchange offers were also popular, with 23% of respondents using trade-in deals. The average amount spent on smartphones during the festive season stood at Rs. 28,000 ($323).

Looking ahead, online marketplaces are expected to maintain their dominance in smartphone sales. In 2025, online channels are projected to contribute 53-55% of total sales volume, with marketplaces like Flipkart and Amazon accounting for 85% of these purchases.

Although hybrid retail models are evolving, online platforms continue to offer unmatched convenience and variety, making them the preferred choice for consumers.

For those unaware, the Indian Army had around 30,000 Sambhav phones that were given to officers. These devices also came with the M-Sigma app for messaging and sharing documents, videos, and pictures. So while it functions similarly to WhatsApp, it would offer safer communications. These practices are alleged to have stifled competition and harmed other businesses, particularly brick-and-mortar retailers.

The CCI reports, exceeding 1,000 pages each, detail how these exclusive launches “deliberately downplayed” competition and favored select sellers who received subsidized warehousing and marketing benefits. This preferential treatment is seen as a way to manipulate market share and potentially inflate prices for consumers.

The findings are a significant blow to both Amazon and Flipkart, who have been facing increasing scrutiny in India for their dominance in the e-commerce market. This is further compounded by the fact that India’s e-retail sector is booming, projected to reach $160 billion by 2028, according to Bain & Company. Losing consumer trust and facing potential fines could be a major setback for these online giants.

The allegations also raise concerns for smartphone manufacturers. Samsung and Xiaomi hold a combined market share of nearly 36% in India, and exclusive launches could give them an unfair advantage. These companies, along with others named in the reports, have been ordered to submit financial statements for the past three years to the CCI for further investigation.

The situation has been brewing for several years. The Confederation of All India Traders, representing millions of small retailers, filed a complaint in 2020 that triggered the CCI investigation. Indian sellers have long accused e-commerce platforms and smartphone brands of unfairly cutting them out of the latest phone launches, leaving them with outdated models and struggling to compete.

Trade bodies allege that as much as 80% of online-exclusive smartphones are being diverted by aggregators who exploit loopholes to buy them in bulk and resell them at marked-up prices.

These aggregators, acting as wholesalers, use hundreds of user accounts to bypass online retailers’ purchase limitations and acquire popular models in bulk. This creates artificial stock shortages on e-commerce platforms, frustrating legitimate customers. The aggregators then sell these phones to retailers across states at inflated prices, who can further exploit the limited online availability to justify even higher markups.

This diversion has a two-fold negative impact. Firstly, it leads to government revenue loss due to tax evasion. Aggregators often purchase these phones using business accounts, allowing them to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on the 18% GST paid. However, when they resell these phones at a higher price through unofficial channels, the additional profit escapes GST taxation. Industry estimates suggest this could be a potential $600 million GST rebate fraud.

Secondly, consumers are left vulnerable. By purchasing from unauthorized sellers, they risk receiving counterfeit products or facing warranty issues down the line. Additionally, they miss out on exclusive deals and offers often available through authorized online retailers.

Smartphone brands like Poco, OnePlus, iQOO, and Realme are reportedly the most affected by this grey market activity. These brands are taking steps to curb the practice by issuing warnings to retailers and requiring them to sign undertakings promising to sell only through authorized channels. Additionally, some brands are appointing distributors to cater specifically to offline retailers.

MX Player offers Amazon a valuable distribution and marketing partner. The Indian streamer boasts a strong presence in smaller locations where Amazon’s e-commerce platform has yet to fully establish itself. This acquisition could bridge the gap between Amazon and these potential customers.

For MX Player, the story is one of strategic shift. Acquired by Times Internet in 2018 for $140 million, the app initially focused on video playback functionality, particularly supporting various video formats compatible with affordable Android devices. WhatsApp threatens to shut down its services in India if it is forced to compromise its end-to-end encryption. The messaging giant and Meta (parent company of WhatsApp) filed a plea at the Delhi High Court challenging India’s 2021 IT rules for social media intermediaries. Their primary concern is the requirement to identify the initial source of information and share it with the government.

Although WhatsApp and Indian courts have had multiple conflicts in the past, the messaging giant has taken a tough stance this time. Tejas Karia, representing WhatsApp, said, “As a platform, we are saying, if we are told to break encryption, then WhatsApp goes,”.

WhatsApp’s Problem With India’s IT Rules 2021

Fake news and harmful content have been a problem with social media platforms. They can cause distress among the public and are seen as a threat to public and national security. The IT rules were established to restrict such content.

The IT Rules 2021 orders social media platforms to appoint key compliance offers and publish monthly compliance reports. The IT rules also demand that these platforms identify the first originator of messages. This is where WhatsApp disagrees.

Media files and messages sent over WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted. This means only the sender and receiver can see them, not even WhatsApp. This end-to-end encryption would be compromised if they had to trace the first originator, and WhatsApp doesn’t want it.

Access to this data would make it easy for authorities to address harmful content and take strict against the first originator, but it also sparks debate over users’ privacy.

The messaging platform argues that breaking the encryption would violate the users’ fundamental rights to privacy.

“There is no such role anywhere else in the world. Not even in Brazil. We will have to keep a complete chain and we don’t know which messages will be asked to be decrypted. It means millions and millions of messages will have to stored for a number of years,”, Karia said.

Kirtiman Singh, appearing for the central government, defended the regulations, weighing on the need to trace message originators.

Delhi High Court has set a hearing date of August 14 for the petitions filed by WhatsApp and Meta.

Only time will tell if WhatsApp will survive in India. However, India strongly needs its own data privacy law to safeguard user data and the company’s privacy practices.

Customers can pre-book the Galaxy Book4 series by paying a token amount of INR 1999 via Samsung.com, the offline Samsung retail store, and other multi-retail stores and select e-portals across the country. The benefits worth INR 5,000 will be available for the users on the purchase of the new Galaxy Book4 Series laptops. Details about the benefits are not yet live.

The Samsung Galaxy Book 4 series comprises the Galaxy Book 4 Pro, Book 4 Pro 360, Book 4 360, and Galaxy Book 4 Ultra. The most powerful model is expected to launch later, while the remaining three models will launch by the end of this month.

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Features

The Galaxy Book 4 Pro comes with either an Intel Core Ultra 5 or Ultra 7 CPU, paired with Intel Arc graphics. It runs on the Windows 11 Home OS and offers a choice between a 14-inch or 16-inch AMOLED display with touch options. The notebook includes AKG quad speakers with Dolby Atmos, WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and a 63Wh/76Wh battery pack with 65W USB-C charging. Depending on the display size, it weighs either 1.23kg or 1.56kg.

Its sibling, the Galaxy Book 4 Pro 360, shares similar specifications but adds a 360-degree hinge for tablet mode. It sports a 16-inch AMOLED touch display, similar CPU options, and Intel Arc graphics. Additional features include Dolby Atmos support, S-Pen compatibility, and a 76Wh battery pack with 65W charging. It’s available with 16GB or 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB or 1TB of storage.

The top-tier model, the Galaxy Book 4 Ultra, boasts a 3K AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and options for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 or RTX 4050 GPU. It’s powered by an Intel Core Ultra 9 or Ultra 7 processor, offering up to 64GB of LPDRR5X RAM and up to 2TB of SSD storage. Connectivity options include Thunderbolt 4, USB Type-A, HDMI 2.1 ports, and a 76Wh battery with 140W USB-C fast charging. Weighing around 1.86kg and measuring 16.5mm in thickness, it’s the most robust of the series.

In South Korea, the Galaxy Book 4 Pro starts at 2,150,000 won ($1,605), the Galaxy Book 4 Pro 360 at 2,650,000 won ($1,978), and the Galaxy Book 4 Ultra at 3,730,000 won (~$2,785).
