LG doomed its smartphone business last year and is currently focusing on other tech segments in the market. However, the company seems to still offer OS upgrades to some of its old smartphones. The LG Velvet that was released back in 2020 is now getting the latest Android 12 OS update.

It is worth noting that the LG Velvet was originally launched with the Android 10 OS out of the box. Now that it is getting the latest Android 12 OS, it seems to bring a lot of new features to the device. Reportedly, the models in Korea are getting the new update, and the update appears to be for the Velvet 5G.

If you are an LG Velvet owner, you should have received the update notification. If not, you can update it by heading to Settings > Software update.

The Velvet smartphone was one of LG’s premium phones in the market. The smartphone received the Android 11 update last year in February, and the Android 12 update has timely appeared on the device. It appears that LG, despite quitting the phone line, has maintained its software update promise, at least for the premium phones like Velvets in the home market.

However, this could be the last update for the LG Velvet, since it’s rare to see any LG phone getting a third OS update, especially now.

LG Velvet took the industry by storm earlier this year when it was announced as it came with a design that indicated the tech giant’s resolve to rethink its product lineup. Apart from the physical design, the LG UX interface was replaced by Velvet UI on the smartphone. LG Electronics has now reportedly announced that the Velvet UI will be expanded to its budget models. Under this arrangement, smartphones such as the LG Q51 and Q61 will get the UI within the year, the company is reported to have stated.

Apart from the Q-series, the company had earlier indicated that it will push the Velvet interface to the older generation of flagship models. The company has been criticized in the past for neglecting older launches, but it seems that LG is mending its ways. The devices set to receive the update includes the V50 ThinQ, V50S ThinQ, V40 ThinQ, V35 ThinQ, G8 ThinQ, and G7 ThinQ.

LG Velvet’s UI doesn’t really represent a super drastic change from LG UX. Apart from the change in the naming, the new UI also features a few tweaks in the interface like notification bar color customization, volume adjustment settings, and a new pop-up window during a call. It seems that the smartphone maker is dropping the UX naming in favor of the Velvet UI. But there is no official confirmation of that.

LG doesn’t really hold the best record when it comes to supporting its old devices in terms of software updates. The Velvet UI may represent a change of direction not just in its smartphone designs but on the software end, considering that some of the models that have been announced to get the proposed update stretch back to those launched in 2018 like the V35 ThinQ.

LG announced the Snapdragon 765G LG VELVET 5G phone in May. In July, it unveiled the 4G version of the phone. Popular leakster Mukul Sharma had recently revealed that the LG VELVET will be releasing in India in October. Today, Fone Arena reported that offline retailer Supreme Mobiles has started receiving the pre-orders of the LG VELVET 5G in India.

LG discontinued its long-running G series of flagship smartphones by relacing it with the mid-range Velvet series this year. The first phone in the newly introduced series comes powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset with support for 5G connectivity. A 4G version of this handset was spotted on Geekbench last month with two-year-old Snapdragon 845 SoC paired with 6GB RAM. Now, the company launches this variant of the phone quietly in Europe for as low as €500.

The newly launched LG Velvet 4G retains everything from the 5G version except for the chipset. That means you get a  6.8-inch FHD+ (2460 x 1080) curved AMOLED display with a U-shaped notch housing a 16MP selfie camera. The screen also supports stylus (Wacom) input with 4096 pressure levels, however, it is a standard 60Hz panel.

As for design, the phone adopts raindrop-like triple camera setup at the back, which includes a 48MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide unit, a 5MP depth sensor, and an LED flash. The handset features a glass sandwich design with metal frame unlike plastic on the OnePlus Nord. 

The device is even IP68 certified for dust and water resistance along with MIL-STD 810G certification for durability. And still, it manages to pack a 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD card slot, NFC, 4,300mAh battery, and wireless charging.

As for variants, the LG Velvet 4G only comes in a single storage configuration of 6GB RAM and 128GB UFS 2.1 memory. Though the 5G version of the handset comes in a variety of colors, the 4G model is limited to certain colors based on regions.

We didn’t get an LG G9 this year but the Korean giant announced a new smartphone line with a new design language. The first model of the series is the pretty LG Velvet, and it has made its way to the US two months after it launched in South Korea.

The LG Velvet will sell for $599 for the 6GB+128GB version and will be available first on AT&T starting today July 22. Verizon and T-Mobile will be getting it later this summer. The phone which launched in four colors and later got three extra colors will be available on AT&T in Aurora Gray and Aurora Silver.

The official press release by AT&T says the LG Dual Screen Accessory will be available later this month for $199.99. Unlike when it launched in Europe, there are no free gifts when you purchase the phone.

The LG Velvet is not a flagship phone but a premium mid-range device. It has a 6.8-inch P-OLED display with a waterdrop notch and a 2460 x 1080 resolution. Powered by the Snapdragon 765G 5G processor and packing 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage, the phone should be able to handle anything you throw at it.

On the back are triple rear cameras arranged in the shape of a falling water droplet. The primary camera is a 48MP sensor and it brings along an 8MP ultrawide angle camera and a 5MP depth sensor. You get a 16MP camera in front for selfies and video calling.

The LG Velvet has stereo speakers, an IP68 rating and MIL-STD-810G rating, NFC, FM radio, and an audio jack. It packs a 4300mAh battery with support for 25W fast wired charging and 9W fast wireless charging. LG ships it with LG UX 9 based on Android 10.

The LG Velvet will begin mass production for the US market next month, according to industry sources; while six older have been confirmed to receive the Velvet UI update as well.

LG Velvet Mass Production

The South Korean tech giant is apparently aiming at shipping 300,000 units for the US market. This would make the device the flagship handset for the second half of this year. Traditionally, the year started off with a G series LG flagship followed by a V series in the second half, but this has since shifted to the launch of Velvet. The production of the new device will begin in August 2020.

Notably, LG will be adding a millimeter (mm) wave antenna made by Qualcomm, which wasn’t included in the South Korean variant. This also caused certain design changes, with the US version of the Velvet having a thinner frame on the sides to support better signal transfer in mmWave networking. At the moment, the US is the only country that has a commercialized mmWave spectrum, thus, the device will take advantage of it.

LG‘s latest premium smartphone, the LG Velvet was first unveiled in South Korea around the early part of May 2020. The company has now launched the Velvet 5G in Europe. The smartphone is already up for pre-order on LG’s official online store in Italy. Also. it is expected to be available in Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Spain.

The Velvet 5G carries a retail price of  €650 but what obviously stands out is loads of goodies worth €400 available to those who pre-order the phone. Those who pre-order the phone before the end of the month will get the LG Dual Screen accessory, LG Tone Free TWS earbuds and a protective cover for the phone.

The Velvet 5G features a 6.9-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2460 x 1080 pixel and 20.5:9 aspect ratio. The display utilises a waterdrop notch that is home to a 16MP camera. Powering the phone is the Snapdragon 765G mobile platform which brings 5G support with its built-in modem. There is 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage that can be expanded to up to an extra 2TB via the MicroSD card slot.

At the rear, the phone sports a pretty nice triple rear camera design that mimics a falling raindrop. The camera setup includes a 48MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 5MP depth sensor.

The smartphone will be launching soon in North and South America, the Middle East, Asia and Africa. However, LG might launch the rumoured 4G version in some of the regions.

Last month, LG introduced the LG Velvet 5G smartphone. The Snapdragon 765 SoC powered 5G-ready mid-range phone comes with an impressive design. A Persian tech site Toranji revealed that LG is working on a 4G edition of the LG Velvet. The publication has revealed that the LG Velvet 4G is driven by the Snapdragon 845 mobile platform that powered many Android flagship phones in 2018. The handset that has LM-G910 model number has also surfaced on Geekbench benchmarking platform.

The Persian website claimed that the 4G version of the LG Velvet will be heading to the markets in the Middle East. The handset is expected to arrive with 20 percent cheaper pricing compared to its 5G variant. LG Iran is yet to confirm on the existence of the LG Velvet 4G. Since the device is also certified by Anatel, a wireless regulator from Brazil, the LG Velvet 4G could be also releasing in other markets. 5G networks are yet commercialized in Iran and Brazil.

The LG Velvet launched about a month ago. It is a phone with a premium design and flagship specs save for its Snapdragon 765 processor that puts it in the mid-range category.

LG sells the phone in four color variants – Aurora White, Aurora Gray, Illusion Sunset, and Aurora Green. A new report says the phone has gotten three new colorways.

The LG Velvet is now available in Aurora Powder (Pink), Aurora Red, and Aurora Blue. The Aurora Powder exclusive to LG’s own carrier network, LG U+, while the Aurora Red variant is available via KT. If you want the blue variant, you will have to get it from SK Telecom.

As you can see, the new colors are exclusive to carriers in South Korea. LG has not said anything yet about the new colorways being available in other countries yet but we won’t rule out the possibility.

LG may not be a force to reckon with in the smartphone industry but the Korean tech giant sure knows how to manufacture some pretty good phones like the latest LG Velvet. Reports from South Korea says LG has got yet another smartphone in the works.

The phone which the Korean blog ETNews says is codenamed “Wing” is said to have the main display which can swivel sideways to reveal a secondary screen underneath. The main display is a 6.8-inch display while the secondary screen will be a smaller 4-inch screen with a 1:1 aspect ratio. It’s expected to cost a bit more than the new Velvet phone when it arrives later this year.

According to ETNews, the LG Wing dual-screen phone will utilise its second screen for multitasking. For instance, the primary display can be used to view a photo while leaving the second screen open to access editing controls. That sounds a little different from LG’s current dual-screen devices like the G8X and V60 with their secondary screens designed mainly to run two different apps at once.

In addition, the phone is said to feature a Snapdragon 7-series processor with support for 5G jus like the Velvel. It will also sport a triple-rear camera array with a 64-megapixel main sensor.

LG is reportedly planning to release the phone in the second half of this year. The price will reportedly be in the region of 1 million won (around $817).

The LG Velvet has been officially announced in Europe. The phone is a premium mid-range device that packs several features that are mostly exclusive to flagships, and its price tag reflects that.

The LG Velvet is the first LG phone to feature a new design language. It is curved on both sides, comes in pretty cool colors, and keeps the weight under 200 grams (180 grams to be precise). However, we wish LG ditched the waterdrop notch which it has overused already.

The LG Velvet has an OLED display that measures 6.8-inches. It has a 2460 x 1080 resolution, a 20.5:9 aspect ratio, and a waterdrop notch that is home to a 16MP camera.

The LG Velvet has a pretty nice rear camera design that mimics a falling raindrop. The triple camera setup includes a 48MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 5MP depth sensor.

LG has loaded the phone with tons of camera features such as time-lapse with automatic and manual speed change; a steady cam feature for shake-free videos; ASMR recording to capture those extra sounds such as the crackle of a fire or the crunch of a cracker; voice out-of-focus which reduces background noise in videos and focuses on the voice of the user; and 3D AR stickers with 3D mesh technology so the AR sticker blends with the face of the subject. These are features you will be hard-pressed to find on a mid-range device.

The LG Velvet has an IP68 rating and MIL-STD 810G specifications. It also has an in-display fingerprint scanner, an audio jack, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.0.

Another premium feature the device has is stylus support. This is not the type of stylus that ships with LG’s Stylo series but a Wacom Stylus with 4096 pressure levels for note-taking, drawing, and more. Unfortunately, you have to purchase it separately along with the LG Dual Screen accessory which it also works with. However, LG includes an app called Nebo that converts your handwritten notes into typed texts including formulas and charts.

There is a 4300mAh battery inside with support for wireless charging. The phone has fast charging support via USB-C but there is no mention of the power rating. It ships with Android 10 out of the box.

LG Velvet Price and Availability

The phone comes in Aurora White, Aurora Gray, Illusion Sunset, and Aurora Green. It is priced at KRW 899,800 (~$735/₹55,745) and will be available for purchase via local operators. There is no info on a global release.

LG’s upcoming mid-range phone has been in the news a lot lately, thanks to LG’s refusal to keep a sealed lip on the features and specifications of the device. Now the manufacturer has revealed the price of the phone which is known as LG Velvet.

The LG Velvet is an upper mid-range 5G phone that is the first to adopt a new design. The Snapdragon 765-powered smartphone will sell for a whopping KRW 899,800 (~$735/₹55,745)!

That sure is pretty expensive for an upper mid-range phone but the LG Velvet is practically a flagship with an upper mid-range chipset. There are a number of flagships released this year that sell for around the same price and even lower.

LG has included an “attractive offer” for buyers in its home country. LG says it will sell the device for half its price if the buyer agrees to return the phone after 24 months to purchase another LG device.

The LG Velvet will pack a 6.8-inch curved Cinema FullVision display with a waterdrop notch and support for HDR10. It has stereo speakers, 48MP triple rear cameras, and a 16MP selfie camera. The Snapdragon 765 processor is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage It also has an IP68 rating, NFC, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and a 4300mAh battery with support for wireless charging and Quick Charge 4+.

It remains to be seen if the aforementioned specifications will convince buyers to overlook the processor and shell out such an amount for the LG Velvet. However, we think it would be more convincing to buy if the phone actually shipped with the LG Dual Display accessory and stylus but those have to be purchased separately.

LG Velvet is expected to be launched on May 7 and there is no doubt that the full details of the phone are already in the open. Images of the device have appeared online severally but we have just spotted clear images of the device. The images were posted on the website of a Korean store along with a short hands-on video.

The specs listing shows the device features a 6.8-inch Full HD+ OLED panel with a U shaped notch housing a 16MP camera. It further confirms the presence of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 paired with 8GB RAM and 128GB with support for microSD card up to 2TB. We expect the phone to have other memory configuration.

The rear camera setup is consistent with what we already know. That is a 48MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide shooter, and a 5MP depth sensor. The handset measures 167.1 x 74.0 x 7.85mm in dimensions, has IP68 water and dustproof rating and weighs 180 grams. It crams a 4300mAh battery and has wireless charging support. Other important features we were able to pick up from the photos include AI-powered stereo loudspeakers, ASMR video recording and gimbal-like video stabilization.

Finally, it will be available in Aurora White, Aurora Grey, Aurora Green, and Sunset colour options. What is left is for LG to announce the pricing and availability.

LG has already revealed the entire specs and official renders of the LG VELVET 5G phone that is scheduled to debut on May 7 through an online event. Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite Zoom is very interesting with its Super AMOLED panel supporting the HDR10+ technology providing a richer image quality. LG VELVET has an OLED display too with pretty nice quality, a wide 20.5:9 aspect ratio, and a large 6.8-inch diagonal. Realme X50m 5G has an IPS display, but it is the only supporting a very high 120 Hz refresh rate. Do you prefer a richer image quality or a higher refresh rate?

Hardware/Software

Under the hood, these three devices sport a powerful Snapdragon 765G supporting 5G connectivity thanks to an integrated 5G modem. They should provide very similar performance since they come with the same chipset and up to 8 GB of RAM, as well as UFS native storage. But if you choose the higher-end version of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite Zoom, you will get more internal storage: up to 256 GB. In each case, you get 5G (both SA and NSA) and Android 10 out of the box.

Camera

Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite Zoom and LG VELVET are more interesting as camera phones for different reasons. The LG VELVET definitely offers the best main sensor and it is the only to support OIS for better stabilization. On the other hand, Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite Zoom offers higher zoom capabilities thanks to a periscopic telephoto lens with a 5x optical zoom. Realme X50m 5G should be more advanced if we talk about selfies as it features a dual 16 + 2 MP front camera including a depth sensor. But its rear cameras are undoubtedly inferior.

Battery

LG VELVET has the biggest battery, but it is just a marginal difference compared to Realme X50m 5G and Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite Zoom, so we can not ensure it will last more on a single charge. But it is the only to offer wireless charging (with a 10W power) and, alongside the Realme X50m 5G, it has the fastest wired charging technology with a power of 30W. Given its 120 Hz IPS display, we doubt Realme X50m 5G will be the best battery phone of this trio.

Price

Unfortunately, the companies did not reveal the global price and availability of these devices, so we can not make a proper price comparison. Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite Zoom starts from CNY 2,099 (roughly $273) in China, Realme X50m 5G starts from CNY 1,999 (roughly $260) in China, we still do not know how much LG VELVET will be priced. Probably LG VELVET will be costlier, but it is the most impressive device of this comparison due to its great camera, best design, wireless charging, waterproof and military certifications. Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite Zoom takes the second place, but Realme X50m 5G has the highest value for money.

There have been multiple rumours over the past few months regarding LG ditching its G series. The South Korean electronics giant confirmed it by revealing new ‘Velvet’ branding, which was later followed by a teaser video exposing the entire design to the public ahead of official launch scheduled for May 7. Now, thanks to a set of promotional teaser posters and a retail spec sheet, we know almost everything about the upcoming LG Velvet.

According to the official teaser posters, the new LG Velvet will have all the useful features from flagship smartphones, even though it will be a mid-range handset with support for 5G connectivity priced around 800,000 Won ($650).

The device will have support for stabilization on video recordings but the teaser does not say clearly whether it will be software-based or via OIS. It will also have different modes such as slow-motion and time-lapse to name a few.

The display on the phone will be using an OLED panel with a tiny dew-drop notch at the top similar to the Mi 10 Youth Edition to accommodate the selfie camera. As per the poster, the phone will output immersive stereo sound through vibrations from the panel just like last year’s LG G8 ThinQ and high-end OLED TVs from LG and Sony.

Also, the device will have all the basic necessary stuff such as IP68 dust and water resistance, MIL-STD-810G certification for durability, a 4,300 mAh battery, and wireless charging.

The teaser video yet again focuses on the design of the LG Velvet. It shows the raindrop camera setup of the smartphone along with its color variants. The May 7 launch date appears at the end of the video. It will be unveiled through online event that will be livestreamed through LG’s official YouTube and Facebook accounts. The event will start at 10 AM KST on the said date.

The LG Velvet will be available in colors like orange-red, gradient, green, black and white. The only thing that the company has officially revealed on its specifications is that it will come equipped with Snapdragon 765G chipset. Hence, it will be a 5G-ready smartphone.

The frontside of the phone has a waterdrop notch screen. It is speculated that the phone could be housing a 6.7-inch or 6.9-inch OLED screen with in-display fingerprint reader. LG is working on a new series of smartphones with a new design language. The first of the phones from this new series will arrive as the LG Velvet and LG has released a video on YouTube that focuses on its design.

The 35-second long video was posted on the official LG Electronics Korean YouTube channel yesterday. The video starts with a raindrop falling that then transforms into the primary rear camera. As you can see in the video, the primary sensor is raised while the other two sensors and LED flash are flush with the body of the phone.

The LG Velvet has a curved glass back that tapers to the edges. The silver frame in between the back and the front appears to be made of metal and has a mirror finish. The LG Velvet is shown to have its SIM card tray at the top along with two white antenna lines.

The phone has its power button on the right side while the left is home to the volume buttons and the Google Assistant button. The bottom of the phone is home to an audio jack, a USB Type-C port, and a three-hole speaker grille.

The LG Velvet will have a waterdrop notch just like LG’s recent phones. The video also revealed it will be a 5G phone powered by a Snapdragon 765 5G processor and it will be available in four colorways.

The LG Velvet is expected to launch next month but LG is yet to announce an official date.
