The launch also includes a few other processors(MT8192, MT8195) for Chromebooks. Besides, the company says that it expects to take a giant leap in shipment of 5G chipsets next year.

The Taiwanese fabless Semiconductor company predicts(via ET Telecom) that it will ship about 500 million 5G chipsets in 2021. That’s a steep dive into the numbers considering the year hasn’t even begun yet. Anyway, the company’s chief executive Rick Tsai believes that the market for 5G will double next year to aid the process. The company has reportedly shipped 200 million 5G chipsets in 2020 already achieving its early prediction.

Further, Rick says the company’s experience in the early phase of 5G was successful and he is confident about the same in 2021. As of Q2, MediaTek had close to 26% of the market share globally and stood behind Qualcomm. However, its’ dimensity SoCs have gained a lot of momentum going into Q3, and currently Q4.

Amidst a pandemic, mid-range devices have been the top priority when it comes to buying mobile smartphones. Accordingly, MediaTek, which already has it’s Dimensity chipsets from mid-range to flagship segment, is flourishing a lot this year. In fact, it has posted a staggering 61.2% YoY surge in September 2020 revenue.

Apart from 5G smartphones, MediaTek is also exploring other areas like IoT(Internet of Things). The company has already tested the World’s first 5G satellite IoT data collection test. The ongoing work with Inmarsat GEO satellites will reportedly help the company drive 5G innovation across verticals like IoT going forward.

Coming back, David Ku, chief financial officer at MediaTek says the company has tie-ups with major Android Smartphone players. In fact, the company has reportedly set aside $2.5 billion for research and development (R&D) activities in 2020.

It also has active partnerships with major Chinese original equipment makers such as Oppo, Redmi, Vivo, Huawei, and ZTE. Ku adds that MediaTek is already working on 5G data cards, 5G broadband, telematics, and 5G industrial IoT.

Its revenue for September is at NT$37.866 billion(US $1.32 billion). This is a 61.2% increase YoY(Year-on-Year) compared to NT$23.494 billion in 2019. Also, if we look at sequential month revenue, its a huge 15.7% bump up from August 2020. And, as per Digitimes report, the third-quarter revenue of MediaTek has touched NT$97.17 billion.

This is a whopping 43.9% QoQ rise in revenue during Q3 from Q2 2020. Also, this has crushed the previously estimated revenue of NT$82.5-87.5 billion making it a Quarterly high so far. It goes without saying that 5G smartphone chip shipments played its part for MediaTek in Q3. However, the consignment numbers show that its market has reportedly widened outside of China into markets like the US.

Editor’s Pick: Skyworth Q71 series 8K TV with MediaTek S900 chip, pop-up AI camera official

That said, this is a healthy trend for MediaTek considering the challenge it generally faces from Qualcomm in the US and Europe. Previously, Mediatek captured a spot inside the top 10 Global IC companies’ revenue rankings. Following this, the company showed encouraging Q1 2020 sitting just behind Samsung. Only after it’s Dimensity SoCs became mainstream, the company saw steady growth. As per the official records, its consolidated revenue from January through September is NT$225.74 billion which is a staggering 24.37% YoY increase from 2019.

And it is only going to get better for MediaTek from hereon. The company recently unveiled its flagship Dimensity 1000C 5G SoC in the United States. It will power devices like the LG Velvet in the US and if it manages to grab the attention, then its no stopping the Taiwanese giant. That said, it is reportedly estimated to touch an annual high of NT$300 billion in 2020 despite a flat growth/slight dip in Q4.

The report says MediaTek is planning to unveil a new 5G mobile chip series that will run on entry-level smartphones. The report which referenced industry sources, claims the unveiling will take place later in July. We are already halfway through the month of July, leaving less than 15 days for the introduction to take place. That is if this information turns out to be accurate.

The introduction of a new series, especially one for entry-level models will reinforce the company’s formidable 5G mobile SoC offering for smartphones. Subsequently, consumer demand for 5G smartphones is on the rise. As a result, a lot more 5G phones have been launched this year compared to the same period last year and there are more to come.

With the increasing demand for 5G smartphones, the demand for 5G processors from mobile phone manufacturers is also increasing. Presently, MediaTek and Qualcomm are the major suppliers of 5G processors for smartphones. Although Huawei and Samsung manufacture their own in-house chipsets, they are mostly used for their own smartphones. In rare cases, we have seen a few models running on Samsung‘s 5G Exynos chipset like the Exynos 880-powered Vivo Y70s 5G.

As per a report carried by DigiTimes (Paywalled) the Taiwanese fabless chip maker is expected to ship more than 80 million mobile SoCs for 5G handsets in 2020. The report also hinted that most of the shipments will be to Chinese handset vendors. This is likely due to the spread in the 5G coverage in China. The projected shipment volume may push up MediaTek’s global market share in the segment to at least 40% and serve as a major growth driver for the company, the report tips.

While the estimates look impressive, they are lower than MediaTek’s projection of 200 million 5G mobile SoCs shipment for 2020. 200 million shipments would have been feasible but we don’t see the company getting such figures due to the slump in the smartphone market occasioned by the COVID 19 pandemic. Moreso, the Taiwanese semiconductor company still has Qualcomm to compete with. In addition, commercial 5G network is yet to role out in most cities outside China.

Presently, MediaTek has launched a number of 5G smartphone processors, including the Dimensity 1000 series, Dimensity 800 series and the Dimensity 820 series. There are rumours that MediaTek and Qualcomm will also introduce entry-level 5G smartphone processors in the third quarter of this year.

Ming Chi Kuo’s report suggests Qualcomm is rethinking its pricing for the mid range 5G chipset after the demand for high end 5G smartphones fell short on expectations. Furthermore, the aggressive pricing policy will aso extend to its low-end offerings in the second half of 2020. Hence, MediaTek faces stiff competition in every category about 3 to 6 months earlier than predicted for its Dimensity lineup of 5G chipsets.

MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000 5G Chipset

As it stands right now, MediaTek’s pricing strategy isn’t as lucrative as Qualcomm’s which could see a gross profit margin of 5G processors being lower than 30 to even 35 percent. The report from Ming Chi Kuo also indicates that after high end 5G smartphone demand turned out to be lower than expected; Qualcomm reduced the price of its Snapdragon 765 5G chipset by about 30 percent to about $40. This is a more affordable alternative to MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000L SoC that costs about $60 to $70 (manufacturing cost being around $45 to $50).

Editor’s Pick: Xiaomi launches Smartmi Air Conditioner A for 2299 Yuan ($333), beats current energy efficiency standards

The figures clearly state that Qualcomm’s new pricing strategy undercuts the MediaTek’s entire market of offering 5G processors at affordable rates. Currently, MediaTek had received orders for about 20 to 25 million chips from various smartphone OEMs like Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi. These orders were supposed to start shipping by February 2020; Thus, the new pricing might disrupt the large scale order MediaTek had received which is predicted to shift towards Qualcomm.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G

The Snapdragon 865 with X55 5G modem has not had its price of $120 to $130 changed. Since it outperforms MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000 SoC. Notably, Dimesity 1000L technically outperforms the Snapdragon 765, although only noticeable during heavy gaming. Lastly, the report also details that the greatest threat is faced by Dimensity 800 SoC. This low end 5G chipset was expected to be released in May 2020 for $40 to $45 (manufacturing cost being around $30 to $35).

Thus, the report states that the competition has arrived 3 to 6 months earlier. It is also expected that Qualcomm will follow the aggressive pricing strategy to avoid a further decline in overall profits.

MediaTek has made it clear that they mean business with the Dimensity 1000 5G chipset. The processor features four high-end Cortex-A77 based BIG cores clocked at 2.6GHz and four Cortex-A55 power-efficient cores clocked at 2.0GHz. Interestingly, this is a dual cluster arrangement instead of the tri-cluster arrangements that we’ve been seeing on high-end processors like Kirin 990, Snapdragon 855 and even Exynos 990. The new MediaTek chip comes with the new Mali-G77 MP9 GPU, which is the same one found on the Exynos 990 with a couple of cores less.

5G is one of the biggest highlights of the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 chipset. It comes with an integrated Helio M70 5G modem that saves space and is efficient at the same time. It is the world’s fastest throughput SoC with 4.7Gbps downlink and 2.5Gbps uplink speeds and supports both standalone and non-standalone networks (Sa/NSA). It also comes with multi-mode support so it supports all networks from 5G to 2G. Note that the Dimensity 1000 5G is a sub-6GHz chip and does not support the mmWave 5G networks that are used on a wide scale in countries like the U.S.

The new MediaTek 5G chip is also the world’s first SoC to support dual 5G SIMs. So you can use two 5G SIM cards in a phone powered by this processor. Existing 5G chipsets only support 5G in one SIM card slot.

Editor’s Pick: MediaTek announces a partnership with Intel to bring 5G to laptops

MediaTek Dimensity 1000 5G is also AI heavy, all thanks to its 5-core APU. This includes two heavy cores, three medium cores, and one light core. MediaTek claims that this design improves the efficiency of AI-related tasks. For example, simple tasks like facial recognition might use just the light core while power-hungry AI apps such as the camera can use the heavy cores. In terms of performance figures, the new chip boasts of 4.5 TOPS (trillion operations per second).

MediaTek’s new 5G chip comes with a capable 5-core ISP as well. It supports single cameras up to 80MP and dual camera setups featuring a 32MP and 16MP sensors. Another big highlight of this new chip is its support for HDR video. In fact, the Dimensity 1000 5G is the world’s first SoC to support multi-frame HDR video. It is also the first chip to support Google AV1 format up to 4K resolution at 60fps. The chip supports QHD+ displays with a 90Hz refresh rate and FHD+ displays with up to 120Hz refresh rate. The Dimensity 1000 5G supports Wi-Fi 6, BL 5.1, and Voice over New Radio (VoNR).

The first smartphones with Dimensity 1000 5G chipset will launch in Q1 2020 in markets like China & other Asian countries. US & EU will get the new chip powered devices in the second half of 2020.

We recently reported that MediaTek already has a 5G processor with a 5G modem built-in. The 7nm SoC supports multi-mode 5G and features the Helio M70 modem. The semiconductor manufacturer says the unnamed processor has Arm’s Cortex A77 CPU cores and Mali-G77 GPU cores. These are Arm’s latest and most powerful CPU and GPU cores which were announced back in May.

The chipset also has an in-house developed AI processing unit called the APU 3.0. A couple of months ago, it was reported that MediaTek’s 5G chipset will begin shipping to manufacturers this quarter. The report also revealed that manufacturers such as OPPO and Vivo have 5G phones planned for release.

MediaTek was earlier reported to have started delivering samples of its 5G chip in Q3 2019. Mass production and shipping were said to begin only by the first quarter of 2020. But today’s report says that the shipping will kick off early, by the end of this year. This report comes alongside another Digitimes report which said that OPPO and Vivo are preponing the release of their respective 5G handsets. However, we aren’t sure whether the two sister brands will use this MediaTek 5G chipset.

According to a known blogger in China, MediaTek’s 5G solution is actually cheaper than the upcoming Qualcomm SM7250 5G integrated mid-range SoC. Qualcomm’s chip is reportedly priced around $60-70 in comparison to MediaTek MT885’s $40-50 pricing. Alongside these two chipmakers, Samsung will also join the mid-range 5G party later this year in partnership with Vivo.

MediaTek is teasing the new 5G chipset featuring AI capabilities in an image via Weibo. It is expected to feature improved AI processor APU 2.0 as like on the Helio P90 SoC. However, the company didn’t reveal any other detail about the new chipset.

The upcoming MediaTek 5G chipset is reportedly built on a 7nm process and will fare better than the present Helio P90 SoC. Recently announced Helio M70 baseband chip is supposedly taking place on the MediaTek 5G chipset with sub-6GHz band support for better 5G connectivity.

We expect more details, including its launch date and other features to leak before the official launch by the end of this month.
