Xiaomi has officially announced the Mi Watch today at an event in Beijing, China. This marks the first true smartwatch from the company, after launching four successive generations of the fitness-centric Mi Band series since 2014. Xiaomi’s first real smartwatch is special not just because it’s feature-rich, but also because the company has a reputation of shaking-up every industry that it enters.

Xiaomi Mi Watch Is A Cheaper Apple Watch

Xiaomi has shamelessly copied the Apple Watch for the Mi Watch’s design and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Apple Watch is one of the best smartwatches available in the market today and taking inspiration from the best is always a good sign. But I just wish it wasn’t an exact replica of the Apple Watch, especially since Xiaomi has released a number of original designs in the past, including the Mi Mix Alpha and the original Mi Mix.

Now that we have established that the Mi Watch design isn’t original, let’s take a closer look at its body. The smartwatch comes with a square touchscreen display protected by sapphire Corning gorilla glass 3. The watch features a 1.78-inch AMOLED curved display with 326 PPI. The back of the watch is made out of ceramic.

There’s a crown on the right that can be used to navigate through the watch UI. Apart from the crown, there’s a multi-purpose button as well as a microphone on the right side. On the left, you have another microphone hole along with a speaker vent. The Mi Watch features an aluminum alloy body with a matte finish, but it has sharper curves than the Apple Watch. At the bottom, you’ll see the pins for the charging dock and the heart rate monitor.

Coming to the strap, Xiaomi is offering removable straps made out of fluoro rubber which is skin-friendly and anti-allergic. There are multiple color options including white, blue, silver, and black. Note that the strap buckle comes with the MI branding in a metallic black shade.

Xiaomi Mi Watch is the first to use the SD3100 4G chip

Inside, the Xiaomi Mi Watch comes with the Snapdragon Wear 3100 4G chipset featuring four Cortex A7 cores clocked at 1.2GHz. The company is calling it the first wearable with Snapdragon 3100 4G, probably because the Fossil Gen 5 watches with Snapdragon 3100 didn’t have cellular connectivity.

One of the highlights of the Mi Smartwatch is its battery. The watch features one of the biggest batteries ever seen on a smartwatch featuring 570mAh in capacity. In comparison, watches like the 46mm Huawei Watch GT 2, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 (44mm), or even the Apple Watch 5 come with just 455mAh, 340mAh, and 296mAh batteries respectively. The company claims the Mi Watch can last up to 36 hours or up to two days on a single charge.

The Xiaomi smartwatch will be loaded with features such as NFC, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi (n), GPS, an independent vibration motor, and a pretty large speaker. Just like the top-end smartwatches of 2019, the Mi Watch also supports eSIM, which ensures you can connect to the internet via cellular network as well as make and receive calls independently.

Mi Watch is Powered By Google’s WearOS

In a surprise move, Xiaomi is adopting Google’s WearOS platform for its new smartwatch. However, like its smartphones, the WearOS running on the Xiaomi watch will be customized with its own MIUI for Watch skin. The company will offer a number of interesting watch faces for the watch. It also, unsurprisingly, comes integrated with Xiaomi’s own XiaoAI assistant.

Apart from the usual fitness-centric features found on a wearable, Xiaomi smartwatch supports heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen VO2 max sensor, sleep monitoring, and body energy monitoring. In one of the marketing videos, Xiaomi confirmed that the Mi Watch is safe for swimming as well.

Powered by the WearOS platform, the Xiaomi Mi watch comes with its own in-built app store that will offer 40+ optimized apps for the new watch. This includes popular Chinese apps like QQ, WeChat, and Keep (fitness). Thanks to NFC, the Mi Watch can also be used to make payments in China.

The Mi Watch is also capable of connecting to and controlling smart home appliances at your home.

Xiaomi Mi Watch Is Priced Aggressively

The Xiaomi Mi Watch is priced at 1299 yuan ($185 or Rs. 13,116) in China. The watch is up for reservations from 5 PM today (November 5) and will go on sale at 12 AM sharp on November 11th in China.

Just like the Mi CC9 Pro, there’s an exclusive edition that features a sapphire glass display with a polished stainless steel body and a stainless steel strap. The exclusive edition looks a lot more premium than the regular one and will retail for 1999 yuan ($285 or Rs. 20,184). The exclusive edition will go on sale in December 2019.

Xiaomi has already confirmed that it will be launching the brand’s first smartwatch at an event on 5th November in China, along with the Mi CC9 Pro smartphone and a few other products.

Ahead of the official announcement, the company shared an image of the upcoming smartwatch, giving us a clear look at its design, which seems very similar to the Apple Watch. Soon after that, live image of the device was leaked online.

Now, a hands-on video of the upcoming Xiaomi Smartwatch has surfaced online, showing the device as well as its user interface. In the video, we can see the user scrolling through the apps in the ‘App Drawer’ and tapping on an app to watch a video.

Earlier, it was reported that the upcoming smartwatch will be powered by the Xiaomi Wear chipset and will also also come with support for eSIM card, 4G LTE network connectivity, multi-function NFC, and smart voice assistant.

The Xiaomi Smartwatch will be running a customized version of Google’s Android Wear operating system out-of-the-box which could be named “Mi Wear” OS. It has been revealed that the Xiaomi Smartwatch which has a square-shared dial, will feature a knob on the top-right corner and will come with two staps — Black and White. As said above, it looks very similar to the Apple Watch.

Xiaomi’s Mi smartwatch design may not be original, but the company will make a compelling case with its hardware and features. After confirming some of the key hardware components of the smartwatch yesterday, today, Xiaomi has shown us a glimpse of its software.

Xiaomi confirms that the Mi smartwatch will be able to install third-party apps for additional functions. From the image, we can confirm that the smartwatch will be able to download and install apps like WeChat, QQ, Alipay, Keep (fitness app), and even DiDi (uber-like app). You can also control smart home devices, and check your fitness data right from the Mi smartwatch.

However, if you notice, the apps are of small size, all under 5MB. This is a very good indication that these are ‘Lite’ versions of the regular apps specially optimized for the smartwatch. The company further adds that it runs on an open OS just like a smartphone. Unfortunately, we still don’t know whether it’ll run on Google’s WearOS.

Yesterday, Xiaomi officially confirmed that it would release a new smartwatch alongside the Mi CC9 Pro at the November 5 event. Today, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun has revealed a render of the upcoming Xiaomi Smartwatch and we can’t deny that it takes HEAVY inspiration from the Apple Watch.

The Xiaomi smartwatch will come in two band colors, elegant black, and silver. It features a curved rectangular screen very similar to the Apple Watch series. What’s more, the placement of the crown is also exactly the same as the Apple Watch. Even the power button is placed just as the Apple wearable. There’s no denying that this Xiaomi smartwatch design lacks originality. We would really be disappointed if Xiaomi is marketing its new watch as an Apple Watch clone at a cheaper price tag.

Xiaomi is said to be preparing for the launch of a new product on August 25. While Redmi 4 is one likely launch candidate, it’s now being said that the Xiaomi smartwatch could be announced as well.

This news comes from the Chinese Mobile Phone League Secretary General on Weibo, who revealed that Xiaomi smartwatch will be released this month itself, but the pricing may not be very cheap. We are used to seeing Xiaomi products priced at super affordable figures and maybe, he meant to warn that the price may not be as cheap as we expect.

In case you are wondering, initially, we were expecting Xiaomi’s first watch to be priced under 999 Yuan ($150). However, after this comment, maybe we can higher our expected price tag. Xiaomi is not new to wearables, but this would indeed be its first every smartwatch. Launching a brand new product, especially its first product in the segment is never easy or cheap, so it remains to be cheap whether the upcoming Xiaomi smartwatch is priced aggressively.

We have repeatedly heard from multiple sources that Xiaomi is working on its first smartwatch. The release date is said to be around September this year, which is just a couple of months away. Earlier, we heard from a Xiaomi’s executive about the upcoming smartwatch but now, it looks like the company is preparing its website for the release of the Mi smartwatch as the official website seems to have already listed smartwatch category in the smart devices section. While this doesn’t reveal anything about the upcoming watch, it kind of confirms again that there’s a smartwatch in the making.

We had previously heard from the CEO of Huami, which is the company that manufactures the Mi Band wearable that Xiaomi Mi smartwatch will meet us in the second half of the year. Given that Huami is directly involved with the production of the wearable, it was a kind of our first confirmation.

Thanks to a recent leak, we already have the basic render of the device. The Mi smartwatch is said to come with a standard round watch design with the Mi logo on top. We can also see two physical buttons on the right side. Also, the smartwatch looks quite thick as well. But what really took our attention was the black bar at the bottom of the display. It seems like Xiaomi’s new smartwatch could have an ugly black bar on the display, just like the first generation Moto 360, which would be really disappointing. A few days back, Xiaomi released the much anticipated Xiaomi Mi Band 2 in China, costing just 149 Yuan ($22). However, the new generation Mi band is not the only wearable that we will be seeing from the company this year. For the first time, Xiaomi is said to be working on a smartwatch and the device was earlier confirmed to be released sometime in the second half of 2016. The confirmation came directly from the CEO of Huami, the company who is responsible for the manufacturing of the Mi Bands.

Now, the noted analyst, Pan Jiutang from China reveals that the new smartwatch should be released by the company soon. He also says that the power consumption of the new Xiaomi smartwatch should be similar to Garmin’s wearables. Finally, he asked his followers what would be the ideal price tag for the new sports watch from the company and gave two options, 999 Yuan ($152) and 1599 Yuan ($243). Well, considering that he revealed two specific price figures for the new Xiaomi smartwatch, it is speculated that there could be two variants that would be priced at 999 Yuan and 1599 Yuan respectively.

Also, since Huami CEO and now Pan Jiutang confirmed that the Xiaomi smartwatch exists, we now have to wait for an official announcement. Considering that the company’s Mi Band 2 costs $22, the Mi smartwatch at 999 Yuan may be a bit costlier than expected.

Along with the Xiaomi Max, we can expect to meet the Xaiomi Mi Band 2 as well as the new MIUI 8 OS at the May 10 event. However, we still haven’t received any official confirmations from the company regarding the existence or the launch of a Mi smartwatch. But that just changed today, as Liu De, the co-founder and Vice President of Xiaomi revealed at a conference in Beijing that the Mi smartwatch does exist and is ready!

He further added that the company will announce the wearable in the second half of 2016, which means sometime after May. It looks like the launch of the smartwatch has been slightly delayed as the CEO of Huami, the company which actually manufacturers the Mi Band had revealed the Mi Band as well as the Mi smartwatch will meet us in Q2 2016. After hearing Liu De’s comment today, it looks like the watch will most likely debut only after a few months.

This is the first time the company has acknowledged the existence of the Mi smartwatch. This comes just after the company released a new smartwatch for kids priced at just 299 Yuan ($46). So, it looks like the company has quite the interest in the wearable industry. Not surprising given that it’s Mi Band wearable is doing so well.

He also revealed that the company currently is not planning to release automobiles, unlike rivals such as LeEco. Instead, it is interested in products catering to the needs of short travel, so we can expect products such as electric bikes and self-balancing walking robots like Ninebot. Finally, he said that the company would focus on establishing offline outlets this year. He also gave a figure, so we can expect around 60 such outlets by the end of the year.

Given that an executive has already confirmed the existence and launch of the Mi smartwatch, we can soon expect more details about the wearable in the coming days. Meanwhile, let’s wait and see what Xiaomi has in store for us for the next Mi Band version on May 10.
