Reliance Jio has introduced its latest budget-friendly 4G feature phone, the JioPhone Prima 2. Succeeding the JioPhone Prima 4G launched in 2023, the Prima 2 brings several enhancements, including an updated curved design and a larger battery, while maintaining its affordable price point.

This new release is set to cater to users who want the benefits of 4G connectivity and essential smartphone features in a compact, easy-to-use device.

According to the previous report, Disney was in talks with Sun TV, Adani Group, and Reliance Industries for the potential acquisition. Now, the latest rumor hints that the deal could close soon with Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Group. The transaction would involve Reliance acquiring a major control stake in the business, although both parties are expected to be in the negotiation stage to decide the exact valuation for the deal.

While initial rumors claimed that Disney is looking to completely exit the Indian market, a Bloomberg report believes that the company only wants to sell a controlling stake rather than completely letting go of its Indian unit. The news from Bloomberg adds that Disney is near a multi-billion dollar deal with Reliance Industries. If this deal goes through, then a vast part of the Disney+Hotstar OTT platform, including its TV channels like Star Sports and Star Gold, could fall under Reliance.

Disney is reportedly asking for 10 billion US Dollars for Hotstar and Star India. However, Reliance isn’t agreeing with this evaluation, instead valuing it for around 7 to 8 billion US Dollars. Interestingly enough, the company acquiring Disney+Hotstar implies that the Ambani led group could gain control over the TV streaming rights of cricket in the Indian market. Rumors are rife that Reliance Jio’s first 5G-enabled smartphone which is tentatively dubbed the JioPhone 5G will debut through the 2023 AGM meeting. According to a previous report by Android Central, the JioPhone 5G will arrive with a 6.5-inch IPS LCD HD+ display boasting a resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels. Under the hood, it is expected to feature the Snapdragon 480 chipset, supported by 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage.

Reliance Jio has been rumored to working on a new budget laptop that supports LTE connectivity support. Now, a new report has revealed the possible pricing for the 4G enabled JioBook notebook as well as its launch timeline.

According to a Reuters report, the Indian company is planning on launching Jio’s laptop in India for a price tag under 15,000 INR. The new laptop will apparently be called the JioBook, with Reliance partnering with tech giants Qualcomm and Microsoft for the upcoming notebook. So under the hood, the laptop will have a chip from Qualcomm with Microsoft providing support for applications on the Reliance JioBook.

Notably, the report further adds that the new Jio laptop will be launched for enterprise customers later this month. In other words, the new laptop will be made available for educational and government institutions. On the other hand, the JioBook will be made commercially available for customers within the next three months. This would mean that the device will be releasing sometime by the end of this year. Although, Reliance has yet to confirm any of this information.

Keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed report, so take this report with a pinch of salt for now. Notably, the JioBook will be made locally in India by contract manufacturer Flex with Jio aiming to sell “hunders of thousands” of units by March of next year, as per one of the sources. This laptop will also run on Jio’s proprietary JioOS operating system and apps can be downloaded from the JioStore.

Now, 91mobiles has revealed the key specifications of the upcoming Jio Phone 5G. The report cites Kuba Wojciechowski as the source who has provided the details of the device via a firmware leak.

According to the report, the Jio Phone 5G is codenamed “Ganga” and has the model number “LS1654QB5”. The device is expected to have a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD screen with a refresh rate of 90Hz. The Snapdragon 480 processor, which is Qualcomm’s entry-level 5G SoC, powers the device. This processor will be paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.

The device is also said to have a 5,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. The device also has a dual rear camera setup on the back, with a 13MP main camera and a 2MP secondary lens. For optics, it is expected to have an 8MP camera on the front. The operating system will be based on Android 12, and because it is expected to have 4GB of RAM, we can expect the full version of Android OS rather than the Android Go Edition. India’s 5G spectrum auction has finally ended. The auction for 51,236 MHz of the total 72,098 MHz spectrum was announced by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Telecom Minister. This spectrum, which is valued at Rs. 1,50,173 crore and makes up around 71% of the entire spectrum, is included. Reliance Jio won the auction with the highest bid, buying over half of the airwaves offered for sale in the 5G spectrum auction.

Several bands of the 5G spectrum were bought by Reliance Jio, including the 700MHz, 800MHz, 1800MHz, 3300MHz, and 26GHz bands. Jio, owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has stated that India will soon see a 5G rollout. The recently appointed Reliance Jio Chairman, Akash Ambani, announced that the business would roll out 5G throughout all of India in honor of “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.”

In order to commemorate “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav,” Reliance Jio claimed it will bring out “the world’s most advanced 5G network throughout India.” When India commemorates its 75th anniversary of independence on August 15, the company may disclose some information.

Jio placed the highest offer at the 5G spectrum auction, purchasing bands for Rs 88,078 crore. This includes the highly sought-after 700MHz 5G spectrum, which is supposed to provide a stronger signal.

The telco has over 400 million active users. Jio further stated that its 5G solution is made in India, by Indians and to suit the need of every Indian. “Jio is fully ready for 5G rollout in the shortest period of time because of its nationwide fiber presence, all-IP network with no legacy infrastructure, indigenous 5G stack, and strong global partnerships across the technology ecosystem,” the company further said in its press release.

Jio’s arch-rival Airtel was the second highest bidder. Airtel bought 19,867 MHz airwaves across different bands for Rs 43,084 crore. Vodafone Idea (Vi) bought spectrum for Rs 18,784 crore. 5G services are expected to roll out in India by October.

A leaked speed test for Jio 5G has revealed that the network can achieve download speeds of 420 Mbps (52 MBps) and upload speeds of 412 Mbps (51.5 MBps). The latency is fairly low as well at just 11ms and jitter averages out at 9ms.

While nowhere close to 5G’s theoretical speeds and latencies, it is a great start and even beats the median global 5G download speed which has lately fallen to around 166 Mbps. The info comes from a screenshot shared by a pilot tester to 91mobiles.

The figures get more impressive when put up against the Reliance-owned Indian telecom company’s highest average 4G data download speed of 21.9 Mbps. Compared to 4G, 5G achieves around 20 times faster download speeds, meaning your 4K movie downloads should take only a matter of minutes. Real-world performance once 5G actually rolls out will most likely differ from these controlled pilot test results — but let’s just marvel at those triple-digit speeds for now.

Speaking of rollouts, 5G in India is expected to reach 13 metro cities before the end of this year, according to the Department of Telecom (DoT). Jio appears to be leading the race and recently even announced that it has completed its 5G rollout plans in around 1,000 cities in the country.

Earlier last year, Jio had managed to reach speeds of 1 Gbps as part of its 5G field tests. These were obviously performed with the operator having complete control over the situations though, so users shouldn’t expect to see Gbps-class speeds anytime soon. Further, Gbps speeds can only be achieved when the network utilizes the millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum, which is something no telecom provider appears to be interested in presently.

Current 5G implementations seem to be favoring distance over speeds, utilizing sub-6GHz frequencies that can hit a few hundred Mbps tops but also cover much wider coverage areas.

Jio will be joined by Airtel and Vi rolling out their respective 5G networks in India in late 2022 and early 2023.

Indian telecom giant Jio launched the JioPhone Next back in October 2021. Since then, we haven’t heard any major things from the brand apart from its rumored 5G phone. Now, AndroidCentral has revealed that this rumored JioPhone 5G could be coming this year and also cites its key specifications.

Jio is yet to bring the 5G network into the Indian market. The company has recently finished the 5G coverage plans for the top-tier cities in the country. These 5G services are expected to be introduced at the annual shareholder meeting in June. At the same time, the JioPhone 5G could debut, as per the publication.

Reportedly, the JioPhone 5G will come with a 6.5-inch IPS LCD display with an HD+(1600 x 720 pixels) resolution. The smartphone will feature a dual-camera system at the rear. It will comprise a 13MP primary lens which will be capable of shooting 1080p videos at 60fps and 720p slow-mo videos at 120fps. The secondary lens will be a 2MP macro sensor. Upfront, it will have an 8MP selfie camera.

Under the hood, the JioPhone 5G will be powered by the 8nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 5G chipset paired with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The device will pack a 5,000mAh non-removable battery and will support 18W fast charging support. As for security, the device will have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

JioPhone Next, a new budget smartphone from Reliance Jio, made in partnership with Google, is expected to be made available in the Indian market around Diwali. This means that the official launch could be just days away.

Ahead of the launch, the company has released a video titled “Making of JioPhone Next” which reveals some of the key details of the smartphone, including the software that will be running the device.

It has now been confirmed that the JioPhone Next will be running Pragati OS. It is a new operating system built on top of Android in partnership with Google and comes with a host of features to cater to entry-level smartphone customers.

Reliance says that Pragati OS has been built specifically for India. In a statement, the company said: “It has been engineered by best minds at Jio and Google with an objective to bring Pragati for all while offering truly seamless experience at affordable cost.”

It has also been confirmed that the smartphone will come powered by a Qualcomm chipset but specific details haven’t been revealed yet. The device will also come with a Voice Assistant to help users operate the device and get information easily from the internet.

There will also be a “Translate” feature that will let users have any screen translated to a language of their choice. In the camera department, the JioPhone will come with a “smart and powerful camera,” which is likely to be a 13-megapixel sensor.

It will support multiple photography modes such as portrait mode, night mode, and more. Users will also get “custom Indian augmented reality filters” to enhance the pictures by associating them with “emotions and festivities.”

A recent leak of the phone through Google Play Console listing reveals that it will feature an HD display with a screen resolution of 720 x 1440 pixels. It will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 215 SoC. It may be offered in two variants — 2GB RAM with 16GB storage and 3GB RAM with 32GB storage.

The phone is expected to come powered by a 2,500mAh battery. While the pricing and availability details still remain unknown, it will probably be priced between ₹5,000 (~$66) and ₹7,000 (~$93) in the Indian market.

Reliance announced the JioPhone Next at its 44th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in June. It is an ultra-affordable smartphone developed in collaboration with Google. The handset was said to go on sale from September 10. Ahead of that, the device’s pre-booking details have emerged.

According to a report by 91Mobiles, the JioPhone Next will be available for pre-booking starting next week. The publication has learned this information from its retail source. Hence, the timeline could be accurate since the phone is scheduled to hit the shelves on September 10.

The JioPhone Next is unlike the older LYF-branded smartphones from Reliance. As mentioned earlier, it is developed in partnership with Google. The device is targeted at first-time smartphone buyers. Hence, it is tailored for that set of users.

Reliance is yet to reveal the entire specifications of this handset, however, most of its features are out via a tipster. According to him, the JioPhone Next has a 5.5-inch display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 215 SoC paired with 2GB/3GB RAM as well as 16GB/32GB eMMC 4.5 storage.

The phone runs Android 11 Go Edition and comes with Google Camera Go with support for HDR, Night Mode, and Snapchat filters. It has a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera.

The handset has dual SIM card slots with support for 4G VoLTE. Last but not least, it is backed by a 2,500mAh battery.

Reliance is yet to reveal the price of the JioPhone Next. Anyway, as per the tipster, the phone will cost around ₹3,499 ($47).

Last year, Reliance Jio partnered with Google for launching an entry-level smartphone running the Android operating system. It has taken a bit longer to get launched than expected but now it seems that the launch could happen soon.

As per the report from ETTech, citing people aware of the matter, Reliance may launch its affordable smartphone before Diwali in India. It comes as the COVID-19 situation is improving in India and the demand is likely to peak by then.

The phone, which is being developed in partnership with Google, has already crossed the Research & Development stage and the company is exploring the option of sourcing components from the likes of Tata Electronics.

It is currently under testing at the manufacturing facilities of Wingtech Mobiles, Dixon Technologies, UTL Neolyncs, and Flextronics Technologies, says the report. As previously noted, the phone is likely to be priced around $50 and the pre-booking could start in the coming months in India.

Citing one of the top executives, the report adds that Google’s job is to optimize the software of the device while Chinese Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) Wingtech will design the hardware while other vendors will be assembling the device.

There’s a possibility that the upcoming smartphone’s specifications and pricing could be announced at Reliance‘s Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is scheduled on 24th June but the actual sale date could be a few weeks or months later.

Reliance Industries has apparently partnered with major tech giants Facebook and Google, along with a fintech based firm Infibeam to setup a national digital payment network, as per sources close to the matter.

According to an EconomicTimes report (Via Reuters), three unnamed sourced have revealed that the Indian conglomerate and Infibeam were in advanced stages of submitting their proposal for a digital payment service to the nation’s central bank, Reserve Bank of India (RBI). For those unaware, RBI invited various companies to make a new umbrella entities (NUE) to create payment networks that would rival the system operated by the National Payments Council of India (NPCI).

Unfortunately, a spokesperson for Infibeam has declined to comment on the report at the moment, adding that the company was bound by confidentiality of process. Meanwhile, Reliance, Google, and even Facebook have yet to respond on the matter. Furthermore, Facebook and Google are already partnered with the Indian giant and also own stakes in Jio Platforms, Reliance’s unit that runs the company’s music, movie and telecom services.

Notably, RBI extended the deadline for all partners to submit NUE applications until 31st March 2021 from 26th February 2021 earlier this week. Additionally, the central bank of the country is expected to take another six months to study all the proposals that are being submitted, and is not expected to give more than two new “for-profit” NUE licenses. Similar to the aforementioned brands, RBI has also declined to comment on the matter as well.

Earlier this week, Amazon achieved a win in an Indian court, which has also blocked Future’s retail deal worth 3.4 billion US Dollars. This decision essentially halts the sale of assets to Reliance Industries.

As per a Reuters report, the court’s decision is a major setback towards Future and could impact the retail landscape in India. For those unaware, the Future Group is India’s second largest retailer, with over 1,700 stores under its belt. The group had entered into a deal with Reliance for the sale of its retail businesses last year. But now, the court blocking the deal could be disastrous to the company, which stated that it faces liquidation if the deal fails.

The reason why Amazon is fighting the legal battle with Future is due to a previous deal it had with the retail giant back in 2019. According to the major e-commerce based firm, both Amazon and Future entered into a deal back in 2019, with one of the clauses prohibiting the Indian retailer from selling their assets to anyone on a “restricted persons” list that included Reliance. This led to a legal face off between the two corporations, which are led by two of the world’s richest men, Jeff Bezos and Mukesh Ambani.

The result of this will also determine Amazon’s ability to eat away at Reliance’s dominance in the region. At the moment, the latter holds a 12,000 strong retail store network. Furthermore, Future had argued that it was not bound by an arbitrator’s order to put the deal on hold, despite Amazon pushing for the court to enforce the ruling to block the deal. As per Justice J. R. Midha, “This court is of the clear view that the (arbitration) order … is enforceable. All the concerned authorities are directed to maintain status quo.”

Reliance Jio stormed into the highly competitive telecom market in September 2016 by announcing very affordable 4G plans. In September this year, Jio’s head Mukesh Ambani revealed that the company is gearing up to launch a world-class 5G service in the country. A fresh report by India’s Economic Times states that Reliance Jio is planning to launch a 5G-enabled Jio Phone priced around Rs 2,500 (~$34) in India.

Reliance Jio’s company official said, “Jio wants to bring the device for less than Rs 5,000. When we scale up the sales, it can be priced in the range of Rs 2,500 (~$34) – Rs 3,000 (~$41).” Currently, the OnePlus Nord that is priced at Rs 24,999 is the cheapest 5G smartphone in India. While various companies have been launching flagship and upper-midrange phones with 5G support in India, it is yet to become a 5G-ready country.

In 2016, Jio sold the 4G-ready Jio Phone for free in India through an offer that required them to pay a refundable deposit of Rs 1,500. Probably, the company may adopt the same strategy for its entry-level 5G phone.

The government of India is yet to allocate spectrum to telecom service providers for carrying field trials of 5G networks. Meanwhile, Reliance Jio is working on its own 5G equipment and it is currently waiting for allocation of 5G spectrum from the Department of Telecom. While the commercialization of the 5G networks, Reliance Jio aims to turn the existing 200 to 300 million 2G users into 5G subscribers.

The first Jio Phone with 5G support is expected to debut next year. There are reports that the end of the year may see the arrival of a new 4G Android phone from the brand that could be priced around Rs 4,000 ($54). Last month, Reliance Jio announced that Google invested Rs 33,737 crore for a 7.7 percent stake in Jio Platforms so that both companies can build a new version of Android OS for low-priced smartphones.

Amazon has just sent a legal notice to Future Group for breaching the terms of its contract after a recent deal with Reliance Retail. The second largest Indian retail chain received the notice for selling a portion of its business to the Ambani owned retail chain.

Back in August 2020, Future Group announced that it was selling off its retail and wholesale operations along with its logistics and warehousing business to Reliance Retail for 3.4 billion US Dollars. Although, Future Group already had a deal with Amazon, before the Reliance Retail deal came into play. The e-retail giant had acquired a 49 percent stake in Future Coupons, a subsidiary of Future Group’s real estate business, back in 2019.

The deal also gave Amazon a 3.58 percent stake in Future Retail and right of first refusal to purchase more stake in Future Retail as well. According to a TechCrunch report, local news networks reported on the legal notice, which arrived as Amazon and the Indian firm had a deal that would restrict the Indian firm from entering into a deal with certain other firms.

The legal notice also arrives amid rumors of Amazon planning on acquiring a multi billion dollar stake in Reliance Retail as well, which is India’s largest retail chain at the moment. Currently, the online retailing segment only accounts for 3 to 7 percent of the total retail sales in the country. Thus, with Reliance Retail launching its own e-commerce business in the region, Amazon and Flipkart would face stiff competition in the market.

Industry analysts have stated that retail is crucial for the future of American e-commerce firms in India. Amazon arrived in the country seven years ago and has since invested more than 6.5 billion US Dollars in the local business. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is apparently looking into gaining investment for its short video sharing platform from Indian giant, Reliance. The move is likely to save the popular social media app from losing its biggest market in terms of users.

For those unaware, the Indian government had previously banned TikTok and 59 other applications a few weeks prior. This was done due to security and privacy concerns and arrived during increased tensions between India and China after certain military clashes in the Indo-China border regions. India has the largest userbase for TikTok outside of China, with over 200 million users.

At the moment, ByteDance employs over 2,000 people in the country, who are also in the gray regarding the situation surrounding their company. Two sources revealed a conversation between both companies last month which has yet to reach a deal. Reliance Jio, introduced as a telecom company, has now ventured into various businesses including e-commerce, cloud computing, and others. It is known for pushing 4G adoption in India. Earlier today, at the company’s Annual General Meet (AGM), Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of the group announced a partnership with Google to develop a new type of entry-level Android smartphone.

India’s largest carrier Jio is known for its cheap data rates and its own-branded entry-level JioPhones running KaiOS with support for various popular apps and services.

At the company’s annual meet, it revealed Google’s ₹33,737 crores ($4.5 billion) investment in Jio Platforms Ltd for a 7.73% equity stake. That’s about 45% of ₹75,000 crores ($10 billion) the internet giant announced for “India Digitization Fund” a couple of days back.

With this collaboration, Google will develop an entry-level smartphone for the Indian market, In a blog post, the company notes that this device will feature an optimized Android Operating System and Play Store.

At first look, this program seems to be similar to Android Go. According to the post, the same strategy will be also applied for entry-level 5G smartphone when Jio will deploy the services in the near future.

India’s best selling feature 4G phone, the JioPhone, now has a successor. The JioPhone 2 comes with a new design and tons of new features while keeping a few ones from its predecessor.

The biggest change in the JioPhone is its design. Gone is the candy bar design. The JioPhone 2 is now wider, thanks to a full QWERTY keyboard. The display is still 2.4-inches but now sits in landscape mode.
