And arriving alongside these models is the new Surface Pro 9 5G, which features various upgrades over the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/surface-pro-x/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Surface Pro X</a>.</p>
<h4>Display &amp; Design</h4>
<p>Looking at the display specifications, it appears that both the Surface Pro 9 and Surface Pro 9 5G model has identical displays. This means, that this variant also sports a 13 inch display that has a 120Hz refresh rate 3:2 aspect ratio, 2,880 x 1,920 pixels resolution, and a 1200:1 contrast ratio as well. Unfortunately, it appears that the 5G enabled model does not support Dolby Vision IQ and auto color management unlike the base Surface Pro 9.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-490388 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/RE50UVF.webp?x10805" alt="Microsoft" width="494" height="278" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/RE50UVF.webp 494w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/RE50UVF-300x169.webp 300w" sizes="(max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px" /></p>
<p>Apart from this, it still features the 2 in 1 design, which means it can shift between a laptop and a tablet. The Surface Pro 9 5G is also larger than the Surface Pro X and even heavier as well, measuring 287 x 209 x 9.3 mm and weighing 883g compared to 287 mm x 208 mm x 7.3 mm and 774g for the Pro X. Apparently this additional weight comes from a larger battery pack.</p>
<h4>Specifications</h4>
<p>With the larger size, the Surface Pro 9 5G features a 47.7Whr battery pack, which is larger than the 39.2Whr battery on the Surface Pro X. Furthermore, the Surface Pro 9 5G model is based on an ARM chipset from Qualcomm rather than the Intel Alder Lake-U CPUs on the base Surface Pro 9 variant. It features the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 chipset that features four ARM Cortex X1 cores that run at 3GHz and four Cortex A78 cores running at 2.4GHz frequency. Thanks to this chipset, this device is also the first 5G enabled product that Microsoft has released, which runs on its Windows operating system.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class=" wp-image-490389 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/csm_YVKAKCMe3RiXjZSQ74oqU4_970_80_6a97839e4a.jpg?x10805" alt="Microsoft" width="570" height="322" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/csm_YVKAKCMe3RiXjZSQ74oqU4_970_80_6a97839e4a.jpg 480w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/csm_YVKAKCMe3RiXjZSQ74oqU4_970_80_6a97839e4a-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px" /></p>
<p>As per official claims, this notebook can last for up to 19 hours on a single ful charge, which is around 3.5 hours more than the Surface Pro 9 model. Oddly enough, the American tech giant decided to launch the Surface Pro 9 5G in just the Platinum color option. The Sapphire, Forest, and Graphite variant are now exclusive to the Surface Pro 9.</p>
<h4>Pricing &amp; Availability</h4>
<p>Microsoft has also revealed the pricing for the Surface Pro 9 5G, which arrives in four different storage configurations. the 8GB RAM + 128GB SSD storage variant is priced at 1,299 US Dollars. On the other hand, the 8GB + 256GB model wil go for 1,399 US Dollars. The 16GB + 256GB variant has a higher price tag of 1,599 US Dollars, while the top end 16GB + 512GB version has a heft cost of 1,899 US Dollars.</p>

<p>As the name implies, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 is a successor of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/03/qualcomm-snapdragon-8cx-2-5g-for-arm-laptops/">8cx Gen 2 model</a> that was launched last year. It is built using the 5nm process, a first for a chip made for Windows devices. The company has also promised an 85 percent improvement in CPU performance and 60 percent faster GPU performance.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-428552 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-Featured.jpg?x10805" alt="Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3" width="1820" height="1213" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-Featured.jpg 1820w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-Featured-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-Featured-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-Featured-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-Featured-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-Featured-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Qualcomm-Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-Featured-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 1820px) 100vw, 1820px" /></p>
<p>For connectivity, the chipset offers support for Qualcomm&#8217;s Snapdragon X55, X62, and the X65 5G modems. To recap, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/09/qualcomm-next-gen-snapdragon-x65-5g-modem-10gbps-speeds/">Snapdragon X65</a> offers peak download speeds of up to 10Gbps, Snapdragon X55 delivers up to 7.5Gbps speeds while the Snapdragon X62 offers up to 4.4Gbps speed.</p>
<p>It packs Qualcomm’s Spectra ISP, which promises better autofocus, auto-white balance, and auto-exposure for videoconferencing. It supports a single camera up to 24MP, along with up to 4 concurrent cameras, and also has support for 4K HDR video capture at 30fps, slow motion 720p video at 480fps.</p>
<p>The chip now supports UFS 3.1 storage which offers faster read and write speeds. There&#8217;s also Qualcomm Voice Suite, which has Qualcomm Noise and Echo Cancellation technology to cancel out unwanted background sounds.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-428553 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3.jpg?x10805" alt="Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3" width="1720" height="1147" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3.jpg 1720w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Snapdragon-8cx-Gen-3-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 1720px) 100vw, 1720px" /></p>
<p>The company is claiming that the chip supports “multi-day battery life” but it has not provided any more details related to this. Devices powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 are expected to launch in the first half of 2022.</p>
<p>Qualcomm is also working on its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/11/17/qualcomm-next-gen-pc-chips-compete-apple-silicon-chips/">next-generation chips for Windows PC</a> that are expected to be powering devices from 2023. Those chips are designed by Nuvia, a company that was acquired by Qualcomm for $1.4 billion earlier this year. The next-generation Nuvia designed chips launching in 2023 are aimed to compete against Apple&#8217;s M-series chips.</p>

Today, the third-gen chipset might have appeared on the Geekbench benchmarks.</p>
<p>A <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/geekbench">Geekbench</a> 5 listing shows a benchmark of a device codenamed &#8220;Qualcomm QRD&#8221;. The device has a processor that is shown as  &#8220;Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3&#8221;. It is an octa-core chipset and has a base frequency of 2.69GHz.</p>
<p>This is in line with Roland&#8217;s report who said that the chipset would be clocked at 2.7GHz. That is, if this is the third-gen 8cx, then it would have 4xGold+ cores at 2.7GHz and 4xGold cores clocked at 2.43GHz.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-379304 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Qualcomm-8cx-third-gen-chipset-sc8280-geekbench.png?x10805" alt="Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3" width="445" height="561" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Qualcomm-8cx-third-gen-chipset-sc8280-geekbench.png 445w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Qualcomm-8cx-third-gen-chipset-sc8280-geekbench-238x300.png 238w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Qualcomm-8cx-third-gen-chipset-sc8280-geekbench-333x420.png 333w" sizes="(max-width: 445px) 100vw, 445px" /></p>
<p>Anyway, the listing shows that the device scores 982 on single-core and 4,918 on multi-core categories. According to the Notebookcheck report, these scores match only 56% of Apple M1 performance. While the overall performance has improved, it looks like <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a> still needs a lot of catching to do with Apple.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>That said, this particular benchmark isn&#8217;t necessarily verified as the third-gen <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/snapdragon-8cx">Snapdragon 8cx</a> chipset although it has the identifier &#8216;ARMv8&#8217; on it. And even if this is the one, the sample could be of a prototype so let&#8217;s wait for an official word on the performance data.</p>
<p>The upcoming <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm-snapdragon-8cx">Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx</a> chipset is said to be used primarily in Windows notebooks including the 2-in-1 machines. It will probably have an integrated NPU to handle <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/artificial-intelligence">AI</a>-based tasks with up to 15 TOP(Trillions of Operations) of performance.</p>
<p>All these are hinting towards a competitive iteration from Qualcomm and only time will tell if it will up the ante and play a tug of war with its rivals in 2021.</p>
