Google announced the sixth generation of its Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) for data centers, codenamed Trillium, at its I/O 2024 Developer Conference today. While a specific launch date wasn’t revealed, Google assured attendees that Trillium will be available later this year.

The Trillium TPU also has doubled memory bandwidth

Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized Google’s longstanding commitment to AI innovation, stating, “Google was born for this moment. We have been a pioneer in GPUs for more than a decade.”

Pichai then unveiled the impressive performance gains of Trillium. Compared to the fifth generation TPU, Trillium boasts a staggering 4.7 times improvement in computing power per chip. Google achieved this by enhancing the chip’s matrix multiplication unit (MXU) and boosting the overall clock speed. Additionally, Trillium benefits from doubled memory bandwidth.

Trillium incorporates Google’s third-generation SparseCore technology, described as “a purpose-built accelerator for common large-scale tasks in advanced ranking and recommendation workloads.” This allows Trillium TPUs to train models faster and deliver lower latency when serving those models.

Energy efficiency was another key focus for Google. Pichai highlighted Trillium as the company’s “most energy-efficient” TPU yet. This is particularly significant considering the ever-growing demand for AI chips, which can have a substantial environmental impact. Google claims Trillium offers a 67% improvement in energy efficiency compared to the previous generation.

Google’s Pixel smartphones have been gaining popularity over the years, thanks to their high-quality camera and seamless integration with Google’s software services. However, one of the key factors that differentiate Pixel phones from the rest of the Android market is the custom-built Tensor chip that powers the devices.

Google has previously relied on Samsung for its chips’ manufacturing

According to recent reports from Sammobile, Google has relied on Samsung to design and manufacture the Tensor chip for the past two generations of products. However, there are rumors that Google may be looking to change things up with the upcoming Tensor G3, G4, and G5 chips.

The Tensor G3 chip is expected to be co-designed with Samsung’s System LSI arm and manufactured using Samsung’s 4nm process. The chip will reportedly adopt a “1+4+4” nine-core design, consisting of one 3.30GHz Cortex-X3 core, four Cortex-A715 cores at 2.60GHz, and four 2.20GHz-2.30GHz Cortex-A510 cores.

For the Tensor G4, Google is said to be considering designing its chips completely in-house and manufacturing them using TSMC‘s 4nm process. However, the cost of this process may be too high for the Pixel, and Google may have to turn to Samsung’s foundry instead. It’s currently unclear what process the Tensor G4 will use.

Finally, for the Tensor G5, Google is rumored to be using TSMC’s 3nm process for manufacturing. This process promises even greater power efficiency and performance improvements compared to the 4nm process used for the Tensor G4.

These developments could have significant implications for the Pixel line of smartphones. In-house chip design and manufacturing could give Google more control over the performance and efficiency of its devices, potentially leading to even better user experiences.
However, switching to new chip designs and manufacturing processes also comes with risks and challenges. It remains to be seen how Google will handle these challenges and whether the upcoming Tensor chips will live up to expectations. Regardless, the technology industry is eagerly anticipating the release of the Pixel 6 and the Tensor G3, which could give us a glimpse of what’s to come in the world of smartphone technology. For now, fans have been anticipating the release of the Pixel Fold and the Pixel 7a, launches for which are right around the corner.

For those unaware, Samsung had skipped its proprietary Exynos chips from its premium Galaxy S23 series this year in favor of Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. But now, a new rumor has suggested that the reportedly cancelled Exynos 2300 SoC might be taking on a new form. The Search Engine giant is apparently planning to use a modified version of the Exynos 2300 for its next generation of Tensor processor.

In other words, it appears that Samsung has quietly been working on the Exynos 2300 despite not making it official. However, there are reports that Samsung’s semiconductor division is still working on a new flagship grade Exynos process codenamed Quadra. So, Quadra might be modified and used as a base for the Tensor 3 chipset. Based on a recent leak, the Exynos 2300 will feature a Cortex X3 prime core that has a 3.09GHz max clock speed, along with four Cortex A715 cores clocked at 2.65GHz and four efficiency Cortex A510 cores that clock in at 2.1GHz.

Unfortunately, this is all the information based on the recent rumors. Earlier reports had also hinted at the next gen Tensor chips being based off of Samsung’s 4nm process, so it is clear that both companies are working closely together for chip development. So stick around for more as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.

Samsung Foundry, the second-largest foundry in the world after TSMC, is set to begin mass production of chips using its third-generation 4nm process node. This comes after the company had yield issues with its 4nm chip production last year, resulting in Qualcomm moving production of its Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to TSMC. However, Samsung has seen improvements in its yield rates, which have risen from 35% at one point last year to 60% now, as well as boosts in performance and energy-efficiency. We might get to see the new 4nm process node in Google’s Pixel 8 lineup, which is expected to release later this year.

While 3nm is the most advanced node available, Samsung’s 4nm and 5nm processes are currently being used more frequently, accounting for 22% of chips produced during the third quarter of last year compared to 16% manufactured using 6nm and 7nm process nodes. The only phones expected to be powered by 3nm silicon this year are the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra.

Google’s Pixel 8 series, set to be released in the fourth quarter of this year, is likely to be powered by the third-generation 4nm process node, with the Google Tensor 3 chipset for the new handsets expected to be produced using this technology. The Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet, and Pixel 7a are expected to be powered by the Tensor 2, which is built on Samsung’s second-generation 4nm node.

Both TSMC and Samsung plan to produce 4nm chips in the United States starting next year, with TSMC’s fab in Phoenix, Arizona and Samsung Foundry’s facility in Taylor, Texas, adding a 4nm production line. TSMC hopes to start shipping 2nm chips to customers in 2026, while Samsung plans to begin 2nm production in 2025, followed by 1.4nm production in 2027. Intel has also stated that it plans to match TSMC and Samsung Foundry in 2024 and regain process leadership the following year.

Soon after the announcement, an unboxing video of the Pixel 6a appeared on TikTok. Now, a Malaysian YouTuber named Fazli Halim has released a hands-on video of the device to give a good look at its design from all angles.

The Pixel 6a unboxing video by Fazli shows that it looks similar to the Google Pixel 6 Pro / Pixel 6. It has a horizontal camera bar, which houses a dual-camera system. The camera bar is not less protruding as compared to the Pixel 6 Pro. The rear shell of the device seems to be made from glossy plastic.

Now its companion the Pixel 7 Pro’s prototype has been spotted in live images online. What’s more interesting is someone was using this prototype for about three weeks without even noticing.

The news comes from the Google Pixel subreddit, where a user shared that they have been using the purported Pixel 7 Pro for about three weeks without even realizing that it was an unreleased phone. The user, however, didn’t share any images of the smartphone. The leaked images were spotted on Slashleaks.

The leaked images show the display of the smartphone with the device information page and the bootloader screen. It can be seen in the images that the back of the Pixel 7 Pro is very similar to the Pixel 7, except that the Pro model has an additional camera.

The device can be seen to have a new metal rear camera island that has a similar visor-like look. While on the front, the Pixel 7 Pro seems to have the same curved screen as its predecessor. The images also reveal that the smartphone has 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of storage.

The design and appearance are still fine, however, we don’t quite understand why the Device Info is listing the name as “Cubot Cheetah 2”. It is the name of an old, very old smartphone that was manufactured by the Chinese smartphone maker Cubot.

As per previous reports, the upcoming Google Pixel 7 series could feature the same display as the current Pixel 6 series. However, the upcoming smartphones are going to carry major upgrades in terms of camera, processor, and software. The Pixel 7 series will officially launch in October this year.

Today, the unannounced mid-ranger from Google was spotted in the database of the Geekbench benchmarking site. The listing suggests that the company could be internally testing the performance of the device before its official announcement.

The Google Pixel 6a scored 1050 and 2833 points in the single-core and multi-core tests of Geekbench 5, respectively. The handset is powered by an octa-core SoC that comprises two 2.80GHz CPU cores, two 2.25GGHz CPU cores, and four 1.80GHz CPU cores. The chipset includes the Mali-G76 graphics.

These details confirm that the Pixel 6a will feature the Tensor chip, which fuels the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones. The Geekbench also reveals that the Tensor will be accompanied by 6 GB of RAM. The device will run on Android 12 OS.

It is expected to feature a Sony IMX355 8-megapixel camera for selfies and video calls.

The rear side of the phone will sport a dual-tone design similar to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The horizontal camera strip will be equipped with a Sony IMX363 12.2-megapixel main camera, a SonyIMX386 12-megapixel ultrawide lens, and an LED flash.

The Pixel 6a is said to measure 158.6 x 74.8 x 8.9mm. For security, it will come with an in-screen fingerprint scanner. The other details of the phone are yet to be revealed.

The predecessor Pixel 5a was released in limited markets. It is speculated that the Pixel 6a will be made available in wider markets including India. At present, there is no information on the pricing of the device.

Rumors have it that the search engine giant will be announcing a Tensor powered Pixel phone in the next few months. This device is expected to debut in the market with the Pixel 6A moniker. Now, tipster Max Jambor has tipped the launch timeline of the Pixel 6A.

According to Jambor, the Google Pixel 6A is scheduled for May. To recollect, the Google Pixel 5a 5G was announced in August 2021. Its predecessor Pixel 4a was unveiled in August 2020. The Pixel 3a was made official during the Google I/O event, which was held in May 2019. Hence, it is likely that the upcoming Google I/O event in May could see the arrival of the Pixel 6A.

Google Pixel 6A specifications (rumored)

Recent reports have revealed that the Google Pixel 6A’s rear camera setup will include a 12.2-megapixel Sony IMX363, which was first made available on Pixel phones back in 2018. The main camera will be coupled with a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 ultrawide lens. It will come with an 8-megapixel Sony IMX355 snapper for capturing selfies.

It is speculated that the Google Tensor GS101 chip that powered the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will also power the forthcoming Pixel 6A. Unfortunately, the rumor mill is yet to leak detailed information on the specs of the Pixel 6A.

The CAD renders and dummy unit images of the Pixel 6A have revealed that it will be equipped with an OLED panel with a punch-hole design and an in-screen fingerprint scanner. Its rear side will be fitted with a horizontal camera module for its dual-camera unit.

A fresh report by 9to5 Google has revealed some key information on the chipset and cameras of the Pixel 6a.

The new report states that the Pixel 6a’s rear camera setup will include a 12.2-megapixel Sony IMX363 camera. It is the same camera sensor that was made available on older Pixel phones from Pixel 3 that debuted in 2018 to Pixel 5a from this year.

The 12.2-megapixel Sony IMX363 camera will be accompanied by a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 sensor. The latter may function as an ultrawide camera. For selfies, the device will feature an 8-megapixel Sony IMX355 front-facing camera. These cameras show that its photography prowess will not be as good as Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro.

Google Pixel 6a CAD renders by 91mobiles/Steve Hemmerstoffer

The report further states that the Pixel 6a mid-ranger will be equipped with the Google Tensor GS101 chip, which fuels the Pixel 6 duo flagship phones. The other details of the phone are under wraps.

The Pixel 6a renders showed that it will be featuring a punch-hole display on the front. Its rear shell will feature a dual-tone design and a horizontal camera bar. At present, there is no information on the launch date of the device.

The Pixel 5a was announced in August this year. Hence, there is a possibility that the search giant may announce the Pixel 6a at least six months after the launch of the Pixel 5a. Hence, it appears that the handset may break cover by Q1 2022.

— Snapdragon (@Snapdragon) October 13, 2021

A number of mobile phone manufacturers are developing their own processors to use in their phones. The latest to do so is Google whose upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones will feature the Tensor processor, its first mobile phone chipset. In a way, one can say the Snapdragon tweet is targeted at Google.

Qualcomm is one of the biggest semiconductor companies in the world and its chipsets powers billions of smartphones and tablets. With manufacturers switching to their own processor, it means Qualcomm is losing clients and that is bad for business. However, the advantages of an in-house chip are big.

With its own processors, manufacturers can tune their devices to work better or for improved hardware + software harmony. There is also the advantage of being able to support devices powered by the chip for much longer. It has been reported that the upcoming Pixel 6 series will receive 4 years of software upgrades and 5 years of security patches. This means its last major software upgrade will be Android 16 which should be released in 2025.

In the image, the Oriole model (Pixel 6) is mentioned with two price tags such as 548 euros and 649 euros, which seemingly belongs to the 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage variants. The Raven (Pixel 6 Pro) is listed with a pricing of 899 euros. 9to5Google claims it was able to confirm these prices from a different source in Europe.

Reports have claimed that the Pixel 6 Pro will come in three options such as 12 GB RAM + 128 GB storage, 12 GB RAM + 256 GB storage, and 12 GB RAM + 512 GB storage. Considering that its base model is priced at 899 euros, the remaining two variants may cost 999 euros and 1,099 euros.

There will be five colors like red, green, black, silver, and gold between the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The black model could be called Carbon, whereas the green model could be marketed as Fog.

The search engine giant is expected to announce the Pixel 6 series of flagship phones in October. Ahead of the launch, the Pixel 6 Pro has appeared at the Geekbench benchmarking site. The listing has revealed the configurations of the Tensor chip.

The Pixel 6 Pro’s Geekbench listing reveals the Tensor SoC has a tri-cluster CPU configuration. It has two CPU cores working at 2.84GHz, another two CPU cores clocking at 2.25GHz, and four CPU cores ticking at 1.80GHz. Reports claim that these could be Cortex-X1, Cortex-A78, and Cortex-A55, respectively. It was reported last month that the Tensor SoC could be the unreleased 5nm Samsung Exynos 9855 chip, which is codenamed as Whitechapel. Several reports have also claimed in the past the Tensor chip has the same codename.

Coming back to the Geekbench listing, the Pixel 6 Pro with Tensor is expected to offer flagship performance. The device is equipped with 12 GB of RAM, and it runs on the latest Android 12 OS. With two Cortex-X1 cores onboard, the Tensor chip may outperform the Snapdragon 888/888+ and Exynos 2100 chip.

Google Pixel 6 Pro specifications (Rumored)

Past reports have revealed that the Google Pixel 6 Pro will feature a 6.7-inch OLED panel that offers Quad HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It may feature a front camera of 12-megapixel and its rear shell may house a 50-megapixel main camera, a 48-megapixel telephoto sensor, and a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera.

Just like this year’s flagship chipsets from Qualcomm and Samsung i.e. the Snapdragon 888/Snapdragon 888+ and the Exynos 2100, a leak by the Chinese leaker, Digital Chat Station, has revealed that the Tensor processor will also feature Arm’s Cortex-A1 CPU core. However, it won’t have one but two of these cores. The info was revealed in a Weibo post.

The leaker revealed the processor will have the two Cortex-X1 cores clocked at 2.8GHz along with two high-performance cores clocked at 2.25GHz and four efficiency cores clocked at 1.8GHz. The CPU is paired with the Mali-G78 GPU whose clockspeed wasn’t revealed.

An earlier report disclosed that the Google Tensor chip will be built on Samsung’s 5nm node. The processor will bring key improvements in AI tasks such as translation, captioning, and dictation. Google has also revealed that the phones will feature the most layers of hardware security in any phone.

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will have displays with a punch hole for the front-facing camera. The former will have two rear cameras while the pro model will have three rear cameras that include one with a telephoto lens that provides 4x optical zoom.

Google is yet to announce a date for the release of the phones but multiple sources point to an October release date.

It has been reported that Google plans to announce its own CPUs which will power Chromebooks and Chrome OS-powered tablets. The news comes from Nikkei Asia and they cite three sources with knowledge of the matter. These CPUs are expected to begin rolling out in 2023 though Google has declined to comment on the matter.

Google’s processors will be based on the Arm architecture just like that of other chip companies such as MediaTek and Qualcomm. The advantage of using its own chip includes being able to more easily customize features for the devices they power.

A chief analyst at Isaiah Research, Eric Tsang, who spoke to Nikkei Asia, said that while the use of one’s own chip will result in better software and hardware integration, the business of making your own chip requires a lot of investment and long-term commitments. Peter Hanbury, a partner at Bain & Co., a consulting firm, also shares similar sentiments. He cited the cost associated with developing a chipset which is about $500 million for a 5nm processor and $50 million for a 28nm processor. Mr. Tsang also stated that new players will have to compete with older and more established players for production capacities. Delays in production can result in products arriving later than planned.

The publication also reports that Google has asked its suppliers to prepare 50% more production capacity for the Pixel 6 series compared to that of 2019. It is said that it shipped a total of 7 million Pixel phones in 2019 but that figure fell to 3.7 million last year. Sales have picked up this year, so Google is optimistic sales of the Pixel 6 series should be better.

Samsung‘s Exynos 9855 chipset is codenamed Whitechapel, which is the same codename as Google’s Tensor. The Exynos 9855 is closer to the Exynos 9840 (marketed as Exynos 2100), and the performance of the new Tensor SoC could lie between Exynos 2100 and the yet-to-be-released Exynos 2200. The flagship Exynos 2200 will power Samsung’s premium Galaxy S22 series in 2022.

The upcoming Tensor chipset is Google’s first high-end processor that the company is deploying, obviously in company with Samsung. Previous Google Pixel smartphones were powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. Google has kept the fine details about the Tensor SoC under wraps, with some allusion that it has artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. If indeed the Tensor comes with AI functionality, then the Tensor could be in a class of its own.

Neither Google nor Samsung had officially confirmed the nature of the Tensor processor. Samsung could be currently producing the Tensor on its 5nm LPE fabrication process. If the hype around the Tensor is anything to go by, then it could deliver flagship-level performance on the new Pixel 6 smartphones when they are eventually unveiled later this year.
