vivo X series helps company see tremendous growth in entry-premium smartphone segment

As Chinese smartphone OEMs have now more or less completely dominated the budget segment, the mid to high-end segment is increasingly becoming more important. Not only is the range just another bit waiting to be conquered, but higher-value phones are also more profitable.

The true champ in the entry-premium, however, has been vivo which has made quite the progress in China’s mid to high-end segment (via Counterpoint Research). The company’s market share in the $500-$599 range (at wholesale price) has risen from 10% to 20% in just a year from September 2020 to September 2021. The price band used to be dominated by Huawei.

Much of this was driven by none other than vivo’s flagship X70 Pro offering, and of course, the company’s strides in innovation in camera tech. vivo recently also partnered with optical technology leader ZEISS.

The vivo X series wasn’t always a solely premium offering though. It earlier had blurring boundaries – something that was addressed with the launch of the S series in April 2021, effectively freeing it from the $470 and below segment.

Moving on to China’s smartphone market itself, Counterpoint Research expects it to see flattish growth this year, with a lot of it having to do with the semiconductor shortage. The slow market size growth rate is leading OEMs to move into the game of revenue and average selling price (ASP).

The research firm further says that Chinese OEMs are no longer pleased to be crowned as the “king of affordable” and are hungry to grab more of the $470 and above segment. The price bracket is increasingly becoming a strategic territory for all Chinese OEMs and competition in it is expected to rise next year.

Vivo X70 series launched in India, with 120Hz display, Zeiss Lens, & more

The Vivo X70 series has just been launched in India. While the lineup originally has three models, only the two Pro variants are making it to the Indian market with top notch specs and features.

X70 Pro

Talking about the X70 Pro first, it sports a 6.56 inch FHD+ AMOLED curved display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The front features a centered punch hole for the 32 megapixel selfie camera screen with support for HDR10. Under the hood, a Samsung Exynos 1080 SoC runs the device along with 8GB or 12GB of RAM with 128GB and 256GB of internal storage.

On the rear, the X70 Pro offers a quad camera setup with a 50 megapixel primary camera, two 12 megapixel portrait and ultra wide angle lens, along with an 8 megapixel periscope lens. The primary shooter also features gimbal stabilization while all the lenses feature Zeiss coating. It is powered by a large 4,540mAh battery pack that supports up to 44W Flash Charge.

X70 Pro+

Arriving at the higher end X70 Pro+, the flagship smartphone features a larger 6.78 inch 2K (3200 x 1440) display. The panel is a 10 bit Samsung E5 AMOLED screen, which has a 120Hz variable refresh rate, a maximum brightness of 1500 nits, and 300Hz touch sampling rate (1000Hz max). The display has received an A+ certification rating from DisplayMate. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ runs the device along with LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage. In India, the device will be available in a single storage variant, namely 12GB + 256GB model.

The camera module on the rear features a 50 megapixel primary sensor that uses Samsung’s GN1 sensor, which is paired with a 48 megapixel ultra wide angle lens, 12 megapixel portrait lens, and an 8 megapixel periscope lens. Under the hood, a 4,500mAh battery pack power the device that supports 55W fast charging and 50W wireless Flash Charge as well.

Pricing, Colors, and Availability

The Vivo X70 Pro will be available in two colors, namely Aurora Dawn and Cosmic Black. Meanwhile, the X70 Pro+ is available in single Enigma Black color variant. The X70 Pro models set to go on sale starting from October 7 while the X70 Pro+ model will be available for purchase starting from October 12, although, pre-bookings for all models are currently live, so here are their prices:

X70 Pro (8GB + 128GB) – 46,990 INR (roughly 630 US Dollars)
X70 Pro (8GB + 256GB) – 49,990 INR (roughly 670 US Dollars)

Yesterday, Vivo unveiled the X70 series phones in the Chinese market with the main USP being the cameras. Today, news broke out that the company will be soon launching the phones in several other markets outside China. These markets include India, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, and Thailand. Although the exact launch dates are unknown for most of these markets, we now have learned the launch timings of the Malaysian market.

Vivo has revealed that the Vivo X70 series will launch in Malaysia on September 22. The entire series including the Vivo X70, X70 Pro, and X70 Pro+ is expected to land in the region, however, some specs may differ in comparison to the Chinese editions. Mainly, the Pro model is expected to have some differences.

The Vivo X70 Pro Chinese edition was launched with Exynos 1080 SoC under the hood. But, the device is touted to launch with MediaTek’s Dimensity 1200 SoC in Malaysia. Moreover, it will run on FunTouch OS based on Android 11 instead of the OriginOS seen in the Chinese edition.

The vanilla X70 and the X70 Pro+ are expected to have the same specs as the Chinese editions. The X70 Pro+ will come powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ SoC, whereas, the X70 will have the same Dimensity 1200 SoC.

The phones will come with a 120Hz refresh rate display and multiple cameras at the rear. Additionally, the Pro+ will come with Vivo’s V1 chip and will support ZEISS optics. The X70 will have a 4,400mAh battery with 44W fast charging support. The X70 Pro, on the other hand, will pack a 4,450mAh battery with the same 44W fast charging technology. The X70 Pro+ will house a 4,500mAh battery with support for faster 55W fast charging technology.

Vivo X70 series teased again, features a 2K E5 AMOLED Display

Vivo has just shared another teaser for its upcoming X70 series of smartphones. While the company has teased the rear cameras of the device previously, it has now revealed certain specifications of its display.

As per a new image poster shared online, the Chinese smartphone maker revealed the X70’s front side. The company adds that the new smartphone uses Samsung’s fifth and latest generation of luminous material for the new AMOLED screen panel. The E5 panel offers various improvements over the previous E4 generation of OLED displays and arrives with 25 percent lower power consumption, higher contrast ratio of 8000000:1, and a peak brightness of up to 1500 nits.

Furthermore, the brand also revealed the resolution of this display, which is a 2K panel. Unfortunately, Vivo did not reveal any finer details regarding the new smartphones, although, we had covered key specifications of the X70 Pro+ that were found on a TENAA certification listing. The higher end variant sports a QHD+ 6.78 inch display. Notably, the teaser image also confirmed the center aligned punch hole front facing camera as well, which is expected to be a 32 megapixel selfie camera. Vivo officially confirms the V1 custom Imaging chip developed in 24 months

Vivo has officially confirmed the brand’s first Imaging Chip V1 which is designed to improve the photography prowess of its smartphones. The company issued an official press release which unfortunately did not contain details of the technical feature of the new ISP chip. However, the firm disclosed that the development marks a milestone in the company’s first breakthrough in independent R&D and chip design.

Vivo disclosed that the new V1 ISP chip is the product of 24 months of research and development by an R&D team made up of over 300 persons. The company hopes to approach the new development in four key directions: image system, operating system, industrial design, and performance. It did not state the stage the product is but considering it is tipped to feature on the upcoming Vivo X70 series, we can conclude that it is already in mass production.

Vivo’s Executive VP and COO Hu Baishan also hinted that the V1 chip can better serve user needs by “optimizing smartphone application scenarios such as viewfinder look and video recording”. Earlier on, the Vivo VP it was who confirmed that the chip will feature on the X70 series which is expected to go official on September 9.

Although the X70 series will include the X70, X70 Pro, and X70 Pro+, the topmost Pro+ model is speculated to be the model that will feature the new ISP chip. Recall that the Vivo X70 Pro+ was earlier tipped to feature ZEISS’s original glass lenses.

Vivo X70 series global launch date revealed, will arrive with Origin OS: Tipster

Vivo is gearing up for the launch of its latest X70 series of smartphones. We have already covered some notable leaks and official teasers from the company, but now, a new report suggests that the upcoming lineup global launch is set for September 10.

Earlier today (1st September 2021), we had reported on the Chinese smartphone maker teasing its X70 series camera’s stabilization capabilities. Now, a new tweet from known tipster Abhishek Yadav suggests a global launch, which is set one day after its first announcement in the company’s home country of China. Notably, the tweet from Yadav also added that the new X70 series will be launching with Origin OS kinetic wallpapers as well.

In the social media post, the tipster also shared multiple images that appear to be promotional posters. While the first image highlights the rear camera module of the Vivo X70 Pro+, the second offers us a look at Origin OS Kinetic Wallpaper. Lastly, the final image just says “COMING SOON” along with a countdown that is for nearly nine days for now. In other words, the countdown will hit zero on the 10th of September 2021. Keep in mind that this is still an unconfirmed report so take this news with a pinch of salt for now and stay tuned for more updates regarding this matter.

Vivo X70 series teased, highlights camera’s stabilization capabilities

Earlier this week, Vivo confirmed the launch date for its upcoming X70 series of smartphones. Now, the company has shared a new teaser, which highlights the X70 camera’s image stabilization.

The Chinese smartphone maker shared the teaser earlier today (1st September 2021) on its official Weibo account. Interestingly, we had just covered a new leak yesterday that arrived from a known Chinese tipster who revealed the Vivo X70 Pro+’s camera specification. The device will feature a quad camera setup with the primary lens being a 50 megapixel sensor with OIS support, paired with a 48 megapixel Sony IMX598 ultra wide angle lens with micro gimbal stabilization and a 12 megapixel telephoto and 8 megapixel periscopic zoom lens which also support OIS as well.

In the new promotional image poster, the company showcased the rear of the X70 Pro+, with the large camera module being in clear view along with the Zeiss lens branding and four image sensors. Notably, the new device from the brand is also its first to feature its self developed V1 ISP to enhance the photography experience. In other words, the company is clearing placing an emphasis on the photography aspect of its upcoming smartphone.

Another known Chinese tipster @数码闲聊站 also shared information that was in line with the leak we had covered recently. The leakster added that the device will feature Zeiss G+P glass-plastic hybrid lens 1 micro gimbal stabilization and 3 full OIS modules, along with the V1 chipset. Chinese handset maker vivo is tipped to launch the vivo X70 series in the coming days. The premium smartphones have begun to gain the certifications required for launch. A reliable tipster has now even revealed some of its features.

vivo X60 Pro+

According to Digital Chat Station, one of the models in the vivo X70 series will be powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC coupled with 12GB RAM. It will sport an FHD+ 120Hz display with a centered punch-hole.

Further, this phone will feature a 48MP quad-camera setup, which might include a periscope lens. Whereas, for selfies and video calls, the handset will use a 32MP snapper.

This device will get its juice from a 4,200mAh batty with support for 33W fast charging. Last but not least, the leaker claims that this smartphone will cost over ¥4,000 ($615) in China.

Having said that, vivo is yet to officially start teasing the launch of the vivo X70 series. We can expect the company to announce the arrival of its next-gen premium phones in the coming days.

Because vivo’s sub-brand has already launched the iQOO 8 series as its flagship smartphone lineup for the second half of 2021. Hence, the parent company should also release its own.

There have been multiple vivo X70 series rumors in the past few weeks. The top-end vivo X70 Pro+ is even said to have received 3C certification. All of these clearly suggest that the successor of the vivo X60 series is just around the corner.

Purported Vivo X70 Pro+ with model number V2145A appears on 3C Certification

Vivo is expected to launch new X-series phones in the market dubbed Vivo X70, X70 Pro, and X70 Pro+. The series will succeed the current Vivo X60 smartphones. Previously, the Pro and vanilla variant arrived on Geekbench and now, the Vivo X70 Pro+ has reached the 3C certification.

Earlier, the Vivo X70 was seen with model number V2104, whereas, the X70 Pro carried the model number V2015. Now, as per Digital Chat Station, the V2145 which happened to be seen on China’s 3C is none other than the third device in the series, the Vivo X70 Pro+.

According to its 3C certification, the smartphone has support for 66W fast charging. This is an upgrade over the 55W fast charging seen in the predecessor Vivo X60 Pro+.

Although the specs are scarce for the X70 Pro+, the device’s Indian pricing was tipped. The Vivo X70 Pro+ was touted to come at a price tag of ₹70,000(~$941) in India. We expect the phone to cost similarly in other markets.

The phones arrived on 3C certification recently, which revealed that the X70 and X70 Pro will have 44W fast charging support. On the other hand, the X70 Pro+ will bag a 66W fast charging support.

At the end of last year, vivo debuted the vivo X60 series in China. The three models in the series with some differences made their way to the global markets late last month. Despite being just a few months old, rumors about their successors have started popping up on the internet.

Chinese smartphone makers OPPO and vivo are known for releasing two flagship smartphone series every year. Hence, it is not surprising to learn that the vivo X70 series may go official around June 2021, as per a Weibo user (@馬然熊猫).

This information comes from the same person who tipped the key specs of the upcoming vivo NEX (vivo NEX 5?). Hence, we advise you to consider this leak with a pinch of salt.

According to this tipster, the upcoming vivo X70 series will be backed by a 4,500mAh battery. Unlike the current-gen phones, the forthcoming models will also come with 66W fast charging.

Further, on the front, they will flaunt an FHD+ Samsung E4 AMOLED display with a centered punch-hole. Also, they will come equipped with dual speakers, which are missing on the vivo X60 series.

Lastly, he says that we can expect a 1/1.28-inch primary camera sensor and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC underneath the vivo X70 Pro+. Unfortunately, he is not sure about the chipset in the Pro and vanilla variants.

Last but not least, it is worth noting that the leakster described these features for the ‘vivo X70 series’. He did not clearly specify which model will have these specs. Considering the previous generations, we expect the standard vivo X70 to come with slightly inferior features.
