But is it true? Is it the best phone you can get for that price? We already gave you an idea about it by comparing it to the Redmi 8 and the Infinix Hot 8 actually available in the Indian market, but there are other entry-level devices among its rivals. That is why we made a second comparison: Redmi 8A and Vivo Y91 are the new rivals to beat: go ahead with this post if you want to know which one offers the highest value for money.

Design

If you want an entry-level device, then you have to face several compromises and one of them is the design. These three devices all come with a plastic design and they do not feature premium materials like flagship smartphones. But they are still elegant and well-built. Realme C3 and Redmi 8A are even splash resistant. In each case, you get narrow bezels around the display thanks to a waterdrop notch, but the Redmi 8A is my favorite one since it has a more compact size than Realme C3. Note that in this trio, only the Vivo Y91 sports a fingerprint reader.

Display

Entry-level displays, nothing special. A high brightness, but a below-average resolution, with either 720 x 1520 or 720 x 1560 pixels. You do not get a high level of detail, neither very accurate colors. But they are sufficient displays. What you should be very interested to know is that Realme C3 has a much wider panel than Redmi 8A and Vivo Y91: 6.5 inches vs 6.22 inches. So Realme C3 is a better device for power users and multimedia lovers, despite it has a lower pixel density due to its wider diagonal.

Specs & Software

Both Redmi 8A and Vivo Y91 are equipped with a Snapdragon 439 SoC, while Realme C3 sports a much more powerful Helio G70. It is a toned-down version of the Helio G90 and it is one of the best MediaTek midrange chipsets. It provides higher CPU and GPU performance and it is a good SoC even for gamers. Further, only the Realme C3 comes with Android 10 out of the box. Redmi 8A is based on Android 9 Pie, while Vivo Y91 still comes with the old Android 8.1 Oreo. We think you already got the ranking: Realme C3 wins, then Redmi 8A, then Vivo Y91.

Camera

On the paper, Realme C3 offers the best rear camera setup. It consists of a primary 12 MP lens with a bright f/1.8 focal aperture and a secondary 2 MP depth sensor. Right after, we got the Redmi 8A, even though it has just a single rear camera. Vivo Y91 wins the selfie comparison with a very interesting selfie snapper, while the second place goes to Redmi 8A when it comes to selfies.

Battery

Redmi 8A and Realme C3 feature a mammoth battery: with a 5000 mAh capacity, they are able to last three days with moderate usage. We believe Redmi 8A will last a bit more due to its smaller display and good software optimization. Redmi 8A even offers a faster charging technology, while Realme C3 is the only one who supports reverse charging.

Price

To get Realme C3 in India, you just need Rs.6,999/€90/$99. Redmi 8A sets you Rs.6,499/€83/$90, while Vivo Y91 starts from Rs.8,890/€114/$125. The clear winner of this comparison is Realme C3: it ships with Android 10, it has a way better hardware department, it features a huge battery, a wider display and it even supports an innovative feature such as reverse charging. Redmi 8A comes right after, despite Vivo Y91 is the only sporting a fingerprint reader.

Since the company has already launched the Vivo Y91 phone in Thailand, it appears that the Vivo Y91C is a new variant of the same phone.

The Vivo Y91 smartphone that was launched in countries like Thailand, Malaysia and India are all powered by MediaTek Helio P22 chipset and 3 GB of RAM. It comes with an internal storage of 64 GB. The smartphone had first launched in Philippines in November 2018. The variant that hit the Philippines market was powered by Snapdragon 439 along with 3 GB of RAM. It had landed in Philippines in 32 GB and 64 Gb storage choices.

The Chinese manufacturer had launched the 16 GB storage + 2 GB RAM edition of the same phone as Vivo Y91i smartphone in December 2018 in Philippines. The Vivo Y91iv was also introduced in Thailand with 16 GB storage and 2 GB of RAM. However, it was powered by MediaTek Helio P22 SoC. Hence, the Vivo Y91C that will be releasing in Thailand in the near future could be either the Snapdragon 439 edition of the phone.

The Vivo Y91 and Y91i phones only different in RAM and storage capacities and the rest of their specs are same. The Vivo Y91 features a 6.22-inch waterdrop-style notched screen that produces HD+ resolution of 720 x 1520 pixels. The FunTouch OS 4.4 based Android 8.1 Oreo OS is preloaded on the device.

The backside of the phone features 13-mepagpixel + 2-megapixel dual camera and a fingerprint scanner. The front notch is fitted with an 8-megapixel selfie camera. It receives power from 4,030mAh battery.

Vivo Thailand has also certified Vivo V15 and Vivo V15 Pro smartphones. Hence, there is a possibility that these phones could be soon heading to Thailand. The Vivo V15 series will first go official in India on Feb. 20. The rumored specs of the Vivo V15 Pro include 6.39-inch AMOLED display with in-screen fingerprint reader, Snapdragon 675, 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, Android 9 Pie, 3,700mAh battery, 32-megapixel pop-up selfie shooter and 48-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 5-megapixel triple camera setup.

Vivo, Oppo, and Huawei are the most important manufacturers of affordable smartphones alongside Xiaomi. Vivo Y91 just hitten Indian shelves with a very interesting price tag and it seems to be a unique entry-level device judging from its specifications. Here, we will compare it with other interesting low-end devices launched recently which raised a consistent amount of hype in the last period: Realme C1 from the new Oppo’s sub-brand and the new Honor Play 8A.

Design

It is very rare that a Vivo handset comes with an ugly design: in the last years, the company managed to release incredibly beautiful and innovative devices. Vivo Y91 wins the design comparison with its very high screen-to-body ratio, its waterdrop notch and its gradient colors that you can see on the back cover. It is also the only device of this trio to feature a fingerprint reader, that is placed on the back side of the phone. But some may like the Honor Play 8A more due to its cleaner design and an even smaller notch, but it comes with slightly thicker bezels. Realme C1 is nothing so exciting with its plastic body and its pretty big notch, but it seems to have better build quality.

Display

Oppo Realme C1, Vivo Y91, and Honor Play 8A are all equipped with low-end HD displays, so do not expect a huge image quality. You will not see a noticeable difference in both level of detail and color reproduction, so you can choose by basing on your tastes. Note that Honor Play 8A has a slightly smaller screen that is more comfortable to use with one hand, while Realme C1 has the Gorilla Glass 3 protection that should make it more sturdy.

Specs & Software

Even though it is more affordable than Vivo Y91, the Honor Play 8A is equipped with the most powerful chipset, so it is the handset that will provide the best performance. It comes with the new Helio P35 by Mediatek which can be compared with the Snapdragon 632 by Qualcomm, 3 GB of RAM and up to 64 GB of internal storage that you can furtherly expand with a micro SD. Vivo Y91 and Realme C1 come with low-end Snapdragon 400 series chipsets that can not compete with the Helio P35.

Camera

Despite not being a dual camera setup, I liked a lot the rear camera of the Honor Play 8A because of the high detail captured and decent performance in low light, that is the weakest point of mobile phones, especially entry-level ones. But Vivo Y91 has a better selfie camera and it is also better at capturing depth info thanks to its secondary sensor. Realme C1 has a rear module with similar performances to Vivo Y91, but the front camera is inferior.

Battery

If you want the longest battery life, you should go either for the Vivo Y91 or the Realme C1. The former as a slightly smaller battery but a more efficient chipset, while the latter has a bigger one but an older 14 nm chipset that has a higher consumption. But more or less, they have similar battery life and it is incredibly long given that they have HD+ displays and low-end specs. Honor Play 8A has a much smaller battery so it is not able to compete with these devices and it can last about one day with slightly above-average battery life in every scenario.

Price

In our opinion, Vivo Y91 is slightly better than Honor Play 8A and Realme C1 due to its big battery, good cameras, the fingerprint reader and a slightly more attractive design. But its price is a lot higher: it costs about €200/$227, while its rivals can be found at just €100/$115 more or less. That is why we think Honor Play 8A has the best value for money with its better performance and good cameras.
