Industry Reports Signal India & China Will Lead Global PC Market Recovery in 2024

Just a few years ago, the Covid-19 pandemic changed the world. People stayed home to avoid getting sick, and many countries had lockdowns. With more time at home for work, school, and boredom, people bought a lot of electronics like smartphones, game consoles, and computers. Companies couldn’t even make enough to keep up. But as the pandemic got better and life returned to normal, electronics sales slowed down. The computer market especially saw a drop. Luckily, this slowdown looks temporary, with the PC market in China and India expected to grow in 2024. Here are the details…

India & China Lead PC Market Growth in 2024

The PC market in both China and India is poised for significant growth in the coming years, according to Canalys. The Chinese market is expected to see a rebound in 2024, with growth of 3%. This growth is projected to accelerate to 10% in 2025. This surge is primarily driven by commercial sector demand for PC upgrades. Meanwhile, China’s tablet market is also expected to experience steady growth of 4% in both 2024 and 2025, fueled by deepening digitalization initiatives.

Similarly, in India PC market, including desktops, notebooks, and tablets, is forecast for a robust 14% year-on-year increase in 2024. All segments are expected to contribute to this growth, with tablets leading the charge at an impressive 24% year-on-year rise. Notably, despite the projected overall growth, Q4 2023 shipments saw desktops lead with a 27% increase, followed by notebooks at 3%. Interestingly, tablets in India experienced a 9% decline in shipments during the same period.

The rise of AI-powered PCs and locally manufactured devices are key trends driving this growth in India and China. Different companies will benefit from PC market growth in India and China. In India, Samsung is the biggest winner with 26%, followed by Lenovo (14.8%) and Apple (13.3%). China is different, Lenovo is far ahead with 38%, while Huawei and HP tie for second place with 10% each. The complete breakdown of market shares is as follows:

Baldur’s Gate 3 runs at a smooth 1080p 30fps on Snapdragon X Elite in new demo

Back in October 2023, Qualcomm unveiled the highly anticipated Snapdragon X Elite. This chipset is claimed to be faster than the Apple M2 Max chipset. Now, we have a better idea of its gaming performance as the chip was recently seen running Baldur’s Date 3.

Snapdragon X Elite’s Adreno GPU can run Baldur’s Gate 3

Snapdragon X Elite

To recall, Qualcomm promised that the Snapdragon X Elite won’t require porting of x86-based games since they will run smoothly on the ARM chipset. The new processor will be featured on the next gen laptops and the official announcement confirms that it will support most games that are available on Windows PCs. Developers that want to run their games on the ARM processor can either run natively on ARM64, run hybrid on ARM64EC, or run x64 based emulation.

It is worth noting that only the first two options guarantee a better performance overall. For those unaware, the Snapdragon X Elite’s Adreno GPU is capable of outputting 4.6TFLOPs and supports DX12, DX11, Vulkan, OpenGL, as well as legacy support for DX9 and OpenGL 4.6. As per official notes, the chipset was seen offering an 80 percent performance uplift against the AMD Radeon 780M iGPU.

In a video shared by Devin Arthur, we can see the chipset in action running Baldur’s Gate 3. On 1080p resolution, the game was capable of painting a framerate of around 30 frames per second. Unfortunately, the finer graphics settings are unknown. But this does paint a positive picture for gaming on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon powered laptops. The company isn’t claiming a powerhouse in gaming with this chip, but we can expect to see improvements in the performance over time with optimizations and driver updates.

Apple reportedly considering Baidu AI for iPhone 16 in China

Tech giant Apple is in talks with Chinese internet giant Baidu to integrate Baidu’s Ernie Bot, a large language model (LLM), into its iPhone 16 and other products specifically for the Chinese market, according to a report from Cailian Press. This move comes amid Apple’s efforts to comply with China’s stricter regulations on AI-generated content.

Baidu AI

Baidu Stock Soars on Potential Apple Deal

The report suggests Apple will leverage Ernie Bot for its iOS 18 operating system and Mac OS in China. Apple reportedly discussed with other Chinese firms like Alibaba and a Tsinghua University-affiliated AI company before choosing Baidu.

Apple is likely sticking to its in-house AI model or Google’s Gemini outside of China but opting for a locally developed solution within the mainland to ensure adherence to Chinese regulations.

The news comes on the heels of Apple CEO Tim Cook’s visit to China, where he reaffirmed Apple’s commitment to the market and met with key suppliers. Tim Cook praised Chinese suppliers for their strides towards carbon neutrality.

Cook announced plans to expand Apple‘s research center in Shanghai and establish a new applied research lab in Shenzhen. This focus on China comes as iPhone sales there have dipped 24% year-on-year (Counterpoint Research), likely due to competition primarily from Huawei.

The potential partnership aligns with Samsung’s strategy. Samsung uses Google’s Gemini AI globally but incorporates Baidu’s Ernie into its latest Galaxy S24 series in China for its “Circle to Search” feature.

However, both Apple and Baidu face growing regulatory hurdles. China has established detailed regulations governing domestic generative AI services, ensuring compliance with government-approved content.

The news of a potential Apple-Baidu partnership sent Baidu shares soaring by 6% in Hong Kong. Analysts see this as a potential win for Baidu, not just for branding its Ernie Bot, but for accelerating its AI monetization efforts and gaining an edge over Chinese competitors.

Apple has also officially announced its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 dates, which will take place virtually from June 10th to 14th. The company is expected to announce the iOS 18 with generative AI features. There’s also speculation that Apple may unveil an AI App Store at WWDC 2024, potentially representing a shift in its AI strategy by offering a platform for various AI apps from different developers, including its own upgraded Siri and offerings from competitors like Google and Baidu.

Xiaomi is now entering OLED key component manufacturing

Xiaomi has partnered with Lumilan, a company specializing in the R&D, manufacturing, sales, and service of new OLED materials. As DCS notes, Xiaomi is aiming to polish the underlying technology of display materials by participating in research and development of key OLED materials. So, Xiaomi is not going to manufacture the end product or the display panels themselves, at least for now.

Xiaomi’s joint venture aims to improve the underlying display technology

We are already seeing a number of display manufacturers like BOE crafting great OLED panels that are getting brighter and brighter. An investment in underlying technologies could contribute to overcoming certain limitations and improving the end product even further.

For this purpose, Xiaomi launched “Xiaomi-Lumilan OLED Key Materials and Devices Joint Laboratory” in Ningbo, one of the industrial centers in China.

In the unveiling ceremony of the joint laboratory, Wu Cangzhi, general manager of Xiaomi’s mobile phone display and touch department, said: “Xiaomi’s goal in the new decade is to invest heavily in underlying core technologies and strive to become a global leader in new generation hard-core technology” (machine translation). He expects to consolidate Xiaomi’s underlying technology in the field of display materials with this latest development. He also noted that this joint venture with Lumilan will focus on the pain points of the OLED industry and strive to improve the performance of display products.

Chairman of OLED manufacturer Lumilan noted, “Lumilan will work closely with Xiaomi, starting from the Xiaomi-Lumilan OLED key materials and devices joint laboratory.” They are aiming to overcome the existing technological bottlenecks in the OLED display industry.

Infinix Note 40 Pro 5G series to be Android’s first magnetic wireless charging phones in India

Infinix Note 40 Pro series is scheduled to launch in April in India. Its landing page, available on Flipkart, has already mentioned some of the key specifications that will be available on the upcoming Note 40 Pro 5G and Note 40 Pro+ 5G smartphones. Just as the brand focused on offering versatile and faster charging capabilities on the Note 30 series last year, the Note 40 series is also expected to offer a top-notch charging experience.

Infinix Note 40 series offers 20W magnetic wireless charging

Infinix Note 40 series 20W magCharge wireless charging
Infinix Note 40 series supports 20W magCharge wireless charging

Magnetic wireless charging offers a stable connection, enabling faster and more efficient charging. On the other hand, traditional wireless charging utilizes induction technology, necessitating precise placement of devices on a charging pad to initiate the charging process. While both methods eliminate the need for cables, magnetic wireless charging often provides a more seamless and user-friendly experience due to its secure attachment mechanism and faster charging capabilities.

So far, Apple has been offering magnetic wireless charging with the MagSafe charging branding on its smartphones since the iPhone 12 series, which debuted in 2020. Android phones currently lack this feature, but it appears that the upcoming Infinix Note 40 series will be the first commercially available Android phones to offer support for it.

The Flipkart page indicates that the Note 40 series will feature 20W MagCharge wireless charging. Additionally, the Note 40 models will support reverse wireless charging, allowing users to charge other devices like phones, earbuds, and other compatible devices. In addition, the Note 40 models will come equipped with Cheetah X1, a dedicated chip for power management.

The Note 40 series also includes 4G versions of the Note 40 and Note 40 Pro. It appears that these devices will not make it to the Indian market. Instead, only the Dimensity 7020-powered 5G models, such as the Note 40 Pro and Note 40 Pro+, will be released in the country.

Currently, game developers provide hints and walkthrough videos. As you may have already guessed, “Community Game Help” means hints and clips from fellow creators, that will be labeled as “Community Game Help” The PlayStation blog notes that this new addition to the existing Game Help “will start to become available in select games later this year.”

Community Game Help will be an automatic process

After opting in from the settings, whenever players complete certain activity in a supported game, a video of the same will be automatically captured. It will then be uploaded and a moderator will review the clip and decide if the clip could be helpful in guiding the community. If it proves to be helpful, it will be published as a Game Help hint with the label denoting that it’s from the community. And you will receive a system notification on your console.

Sony notes that only the raw footage will be uploaded. So you don’t have to worry about your audio, webcam footage, or party chat audio. You can check published videos and also remove them if you want.

In addition to the clips or hints from the community, the developer-generated hints that are currently provided will also be there. And when you are accessing hints labeled as Community Game Help, you can also rate them to help the system curate helpful content for the players.

iPhone 16 series may come with bigger batteries

Apple has submitted a new patent revealing that they can increase the battery’s capacity without increasing the size. Android devices are emerging with brand-new fast-charging technologies and high battery capacities recently, to the point that battery capacities exceeding 5000 mAh are quite common now. Apple is also now trying to offer bigger capacity batteries in its phones.

Apple’s new patent on bigger capacity batteries at same size

Apple’s new patent, named “Battery cells with tabs at right angle,” indicates that the capacity of new batteries by Apple can be increased without enlarging the battery size. This patent was filed in September 2021 first and was published on March 26, 2024. Apple has been researching methods such as membranes and foldable battery components to enhance battery life.

Moreover, Apple’s new patent suggests that the battery connector for future iPhones could be something different than we’ve been familiar and different from the conventional battery type. Apple indicates that achieving a high-capacity battery is related to the tab locations in the battery. Apple explains this as follows:

“While one set of connectors may include tabs extending from a surface in a first direction, the other set of connectors may include tabs extending from a surface substantially perpendicular to the first direction. This may not only address issues with space constraints but may also provide improvements in resistance across the cell, which can improve the efficiency of the battery.”

Since Apple has just released this patent, it is not easy to have the new battery tech with iPhone 16 series. However, if things proceed as planned by Apple, the iPhones with large batteries might not be too far off. The Mac Observer also points out that the new battery could be offered in iPhone 16 series.

A previous report revealed that the upcoming Poco F6 has the “period” codename. It also revealed that “N61” is the internal model number of the device. The new report, citing the Mi code as the source, claims that the device will feature the Sony IMX882 50-megapixel primary camera. For those who don’t know, the same camera is also available on phones like the Realme 12 Pro 5G and the iQOO Z9 5G.

The report further states that the Sony IMX355 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens and an OmniVision OV20B40 camera, likely for macro shots, will accompany the main snapper. Sony Xperia 1 VI could be shorter & wider, with 2K display & mainstream aspect ratio

Sony usually unveils its flagship Xperia 1 series smartphones around the second quarter of every year. This year’s Xperia 1 VI, aka Xperia 1 mark 6 is expected to be announced in the next few months. Ahead of the launch, some interesting leaks about the device have come to light.

Sony Xperia 1 V

Tipster Zackbuks previously mentioned that the Xperia 1 VI will feature a 2K display with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, a departure from its 21:9 aspect ratio 4K display. For those unaware, Sony provided this high-resolution tall display on its flagships to match the widescreen format used in many movies, making for an immersive viewing experience.

However, this aspect ratio also comes with its drawbacks, with the most common one being letterboxing in many apps and videos, which means that black bars would appear at the top and bottom edges of the device since most videos and apps are optimized to run on a 19:9 aspect ratio. So the brand is likely trying to make the upcoming Xperia flagship more appealing to the regular users with this switch.

Sony Xperia 1 VI dimensions

The tipster has now added that the phone will overall measure 162 × 74.4 × 8.45mm, with the display measuring 149.6 × 69.4mm. Compared to the 165 x 71 x 8.3 mm dimensions of its predecessor, it Xperia 1 VI will be 3mm shorter, 3.4mm wider, and 1.45mm thicker.

Although the device is transitioning towards a more mainstream design, Sony has suggested that it will retain its 3.5mm jack, a feature that has become rare among modern flagship smartphones.
