‘Nothing Chats’ removed from Play Store over security concerns

Thе Nothing Chats app, an iMеssagе altеrnativе that was launchеd еarliеr this wееk, has bееn rеmovеd from thе Googlе Play Storе. Thе company bеhind thе app, Nothing, initially attributеd thе rеmoval to “sеvеral bugs” that nееdеd to bе fixеd.

However, a comprehensive technical analysis by security researchers suggests that the app’s removal was likely due to significant security concerns.

Nothing Chats’ app pulled from Google Play Store

Kishan Bagaria, Founder of Texts.com, initially raised these concerns on X/Twitter. Later, the Texts.com team also published a detailed blog outlining the app’s vulnerabilities.

Thеir invеstigation rеvеalеd that Sunbird, Nothing’s sеrvicе providеr, had bееn mislеading usеrs about thе еnd-to-еnd еncryption of mеssagеs routеd through its sеrvеrs. Whilе mеssagеs sеnt to Sunbird’s sеrvеrs wеrе еncryptеd, thе JSON Wеb Tokеns (JWT) gеnеratеd by thе sеrvicе wеrе sеnt without any еncryption to anothеr Sunbird sеrvеr, making thеm vulnеrablе to intеrcеption.

Nothing

Additionally, thе mеssagеs wеrе dеcryptеd and storеd on Sunbird sеrvеrs, lеaving thеm suscеptiblе to unauthorizеd accеss.

Tеxts.com dеmonstratеd this by intеrcеpting thе JWTs еxchangеd bеtwееn two dеvicеs, gaining accеss to thе Firеbasе rеal-timе databasе. Rеsеarchеrs thеn wеrе ablе to intеrcеpt JWT tokеns and accеss usеr information and convеrsations with just 23 linеs of codе.

Whilе thе privacy issues arе dirеctly attributablе to Sunbird, Nothing has drawn criticism for choosing to work with thе company and for downplaying thе sеvеrity of thе situation by labеling it as “bugs.”

With Applе’s rеcеnt announcеmеnt of RCS support, thе Nothing Chats app’s appеal has diminishеd furthеr. Usеrs should еxеrcisе caution whеn logging into third-party sеrvicеs using thеir Applе IDs, еvеn if еncryption is promisеd.

It rеmains to bе sееn whеthеr Nothing Chats will bе ablе to addrеss thеsе sеcurity concеrns and makе a succеssful rеturn to thе Play Storе.

Tesla may Deliver only 10 Cybertrucks at the November 30 Event

On November 30, 2023, Tesla is set to unveil its long-awaited Cybertruck. This event, held in Austin, Texas, marks a significant milestone for the electric vehicle (EV) giant. But there’s a twist: only 10 of these futuristic trucks may be handed over to customers, a revelation that might dampen the spirits of the nearly two million reservation holders.

This news might come as a blow to the spirits of millions of customers

Tesla’s global product design director, Javier Verdura, hinted at this limited delivery during a speech in Mexico. Verdura’s words, while exciting, serve as a reminder to manage expectations. It’s a significant point, especially when considering Tesla’s history of delivery patterns. For example, the Model 3′s launch in 2017 involved just 30 cars, all given to employees.

Tesla Cybertruck

This cautious approach isn’t new for Tesla. Elon Musk, the company’s CEO, has openly acknowledged the challenges with the Cybertruck, notably its unique stainless-steel body that’s tough to manufacture at large scale. He has advised stakeholders to temper their hopes, predicting significant, positive cash flow from the Cybertruck could be 18 months away.

Tesla has a reputation for overcoming production hurdles, and this situation may be no different. However, the revelation about the Cybertruck’s limited initial deliveries serves as a reality check. It highlights the often complex and unpredictable nature of launching a new, awaited product.

Leaker spills the beans on Honor Magic 6’s main camera sensor

Just days ago, word broke that the Honor Magic 6 will feature a new camera sensor — the 1-inch OV50K sensor from OmniVision. While specifics about this new sensor remain under wraps, credible leaker Digital Chat Station has shared a few details about it.

According to the leaker, the 1-inch OmniVision OV50K sensor is equipped with a new technology called LOFIC (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor) which will tackle a common challenge in smartphone photography – overexposure in bright scenes.

When you click a picture, the camera sensor captures light which is converted into electrical signals. These signals are then combined to form the final image.

However, in bright scenes, the sensor can be overwhelmed by an excessive amount of light, leading to overexposure and a loss of detail. LOFIC will address this issue by effectively managing the excess light, ensuring that photos retain their integrity even in high-brightness conditions.

DCS added that the OV50K will also be able to compete against Sony’s 1-inch IMX989 sensor.

Honor Magic 6 is also expected to feature satellite communication and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. More details about the Honor Magic 6 series are expected to come out in the coming days.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai Warns Android Users Not to Sideload Apps

App sideloading, which affects both Apple and Google, has become rather popular in recent years. While Android has long accepted third-party programs and app shops, Apple is being compelled to make the shift. Certainly, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai provided testimony on the company’s alleged practice of suppressing competition by charging app developers a premium in the legal dispute with Epic Games.

Later, Sundar Pichai clarified that to safeguard consumers from viruses and jeopardise their security, Google forbids sideloading programs on Android phones. He also highlighted, pointing to Android’s bigger and foldable phone designs, how Google’s principles allow for choice and creativity.

It’s intriguing to hear Pichai discuss sideloading, which Android has always embraced as an open-source platform. It is evident from the fact that he discusses viruses while installing programs from other app shops that the business is attempting to incite fear in the public. In reality, it has only begun to use the Play Protect function to examine Android apps that are sideloaded.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai Warns Android Users Not to Sideload Apps
Google CEO Sundar Pichai Warns Android Users Not to Sideload Apps

Conclusion

It has been noted by many that Google will have more control over the apps that users may download. Although the business asserts that Play Store applications provide the highest level of protection for customers, a recent Kaspersky security study showed that 600 million malicious app downloads were recorded in 2023 alone from Google’s apps store.

Apple has long opposed the ability to sideload programs as it will not have any control over how or from where these apps are loaded on the iPhone, other than Pichai’s plea for safety.

The CEO is now echoing the sentiments which imply that the two digital behemoths are cognizant of the thirty per cent fee that each receives from developers who host their programmes on their own app stores. It makes sense that companies like Epic Games have chosen to host their software on a website instead of distributing it via app stores.

Samsung Galaxy Fit 3 Poster Leaked, Reveals Color Variants, a Bigger Display

Samsung seems to be working on another fitness band that will likely debut in 2024. According to the source, the Galaxy Fit 3 appears to have a bigger display than its previous generation, the Galaxy Fit 2. The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Fit 3 pictures display the whole design of the smart band in addition to the colour variations that will be offered.

The Samsung Galaxy Fit 3 has a big rectangular screen with thin bezels. Because the screen is bigger, we can expect more faces on the upcoming Galaxy Fit 2. On the right edge, there’s a tactile button and a microphone. The button serves as the on/off switch.

The Huawei Watch Fit, which functions as both a smartwatch and fitness tracker, shares a similar appearance. Wearing the fitness tracker for extended periods of time won’t hurt because of its boxy shape and rounded corners.

The silicone straps of the Fit 3 are supposed to be changeable. You may get the option to choose a strap that matches your style. Even though we can’t see it, the smartwatch may have a charging connection at the bottom. Moreover, the Galaxy Fit 3 will be available in Grey, Gold, and Black colors.

Samsung Galaxy Fit 3 Specifications (Rumored)

Samsung has been emphasising the integration of health and fitness into a significant portion of its ecosystem since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Galaxy Watch collection will be expanded with the release of the Galaxy Fit 3. It is said to have blood pressure, sleep, and heart rate monitoring. It cannot make or receive phone calls since it lacks a microphone and a loudspeaker.

The Watch is also reported to feature a 1.1-inch always-on AMOLED display with 5ATM water-resistant rating. Like with its predecessor, we anticipate that you will be able to control the watch using the Galaxy wearables app, which allows you to alter watch faces, set alarms, and access Find My Tracker.

According to reports, the fitness band may feature a 200 mAh battery capacity, which is 41 mAh much more than the previous generation. It is likely to have a 5W charging.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any further information about the specification as of now. But, we would love to see if the fitness band features GPS technology.

Furthermore, the Poco X6 Neo’s codename, ‘gold,’ matches that of the Redmi Note 13 5G, indicating that the three smartphones will share similar specifications. Kacper also asserts that the Poco X6 Neo will boast a 64MP primary camera.

While an official launch date remains unannounced, we can expect to learn more about the Poco X6 Neo in the coming days.

In other Poco news, it is rumored that the Redmi Note 13 Pro (China model) will be rebranded as the Poco X6 5G for the global market. The smartphone has recently received IMDA certification, following BIS certification, suggesting that the Poco X6 series launch is imminent.
