Windows 10 and 11 users facing inconsistent ‘Update and Shut Down’ issue

A common and often overlooked feature on Windows is now causing debates as a significant number of Windows 11 and Windows 10 users are facing an unexpected issue with the “Update and Shut Down” option. Instead of powering down the system after applying updates, the operating system reboots and returns to the login screen, causing confusion and frustration among affected users.

Reports of this behavior have surfaced on various platforms, including Reddit and the Feedback Hub, indicating that the problem is not isolated to a few individuals. This inconsistency is inconvenient, especially for those trying to disconnect devices or save power overnight. The expectation that “Update and Shut Down” should lead to a complete shutdown is logical, but the current behavior leaves systems at the login screen instead.

The Role of Fast Startup Feature in ‘Update and Shut Down’ Misbehavior

A former Microsoft developer offered insights into potential reasons behind this behavior. One possible cause is the Fast Startup feature, which is meant to accelerate boot times. During the shutdown process, Fast Startup stores system data to a file, inadvertently triggering a restart during update installation instead of a full shutdown.

Additionally, if a system hasn’t been updated for a while or a previous update was incomplete, Windows 10 or 11 might require a restart to finalize the installation. Consequently, selecting “Update and Shut Down” may not deliver the expected outcome, leading to a reboot instead.

This issue isn’t exclusive to Windows 11 and 10, as users have also reported encountering it in Windows 7 and 8. While there is no official confirmation from Microsoft regarding future fixes, improvements in the command’s wording could be expected to alleviate the confusion surrounding the feature.

In the meantime, users are advised to be cautious when using the “Update and Shut Down” option and consider manual restarts if a complete shutdown is necessary.

Apple Watch Series 9, Watch Ultra 2 Tipped To Get Significant Performance Upgrade, No Watch SE 3 This Year

Apple’s annual fall event is just a month away. The Cupertino-based tech giant conducts an event in September every year where it launches the latest generation iPhones, Watch Series, iPad Pro’s, and even a MacBook. Leaks and rumors have revealed plenty of information about the iPhone 15 lineup. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shares information about upcoming Apple products in his weekly ‘Power On’ newsletter. This time around he has revealed about the upcoming Apple Watch Series 9.

Apple Watch Series 9 details leaked

In his latest newsletter, Gurman revealed that Apple will launch three smartwatches this year. These include the 41mm and 45mm variants of the Apple Watch Series 9 and the third is the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra. Notably, the company will skip the Watch SE 3 this year. This isn’t surprising considering Apple follows the tradition of launching SE devices every two years. The Watch SE debuted in 2020 with its successor i.e. the second-generation arriving last year. Hence, the third-generation Watch SE is expected to come next year.

As per Gurman, the three upcoming Apple Watch models will reportedly be powered by the new S9 processor. It is said to deliver significant performance upgrades compared to the current-generation Watch Series 8. Gurman adds that this will be the first time since the Series 6 that will offer performance improvement.

As for the Apple Watch Ultra 2, it is tipped to arrive in a dark titanium color option. The company had tested it on the last year’s model but eventually skipped it because the designers did not like the appearance. As per previous report, the second-gen Ultra is tipped to be lighter than its predecessor.

Galaxy S24 Ultra rumored to feature titanium frame

Samsung’s next-generation flagship phone, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, is rumored to embrace cutting-edge technology with the inclusion of a titanium alloy frame. The speculation is sparked by renowned Samsung leaker “Ice Universe,” whose recent tweet features the periodic table with the number “22,” corresponding to titanium’s atomic number.

Cost Considerations: Titanium vs. Aluminum

The possible adoption of a titanium alloy frame by Samsung has garnered attention, especially after reports surfaced about Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro models also considering this premium material. Titanium offers a higher strength-to-weight ratio compared to stainless steel or aluminum alloy frames, making it an appealing choice for flagship devices.

However, it’s essential to note that titanium alloy comes at a significantly higher cost than aluminum alloy. Samsung might be testing the waters by introducing the titanium alloy frame exclusively in the Galaxy S24 Ultra model.

According to Sammobile, it’s possible that Samsung may incorporate “Armor Aluminum” in the Galaxy S24 product lineup while the titanium alloy frame is expected to be reserved for future flagship models.

The move towards using titanium alloy in smartphones mirrors the trend already seen in the smartwatch industry, showcasing the continuous pursuit of innovation and premium materials by tech giants like Samsung and Apple.

Anyway, if the rumors hold true, consumers can look forward to a flagship phone with a titanium alloy frame that promises enhanced durability and a touch of luxury. Samsung is also working on a new battery tech for the upcoming Galaxy S24 series. The battery tech is inspired by electric vehicles and it can significantly increase battery performance.

In the Geekbench test, it achieved remarkable scores, surpassing the 2000 points mark in the single-core test with a score of 2223. Equally impressive, it scored 6661 points in the multi-core test on Geekbench 6.

With this listing, it looks like the brand will be launching the Galaxy S24 lineup with different SoCs for different regions. The US market will obviously get the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered smartphones, however, it remains to be seen which regions get the in-house Exynos 2400 chips.

The Exynos chips have always lagged behind in performance and efficiency compared to their Qualcomm Snapdragon counterparts. So it remains to be seen if the 10-core Exynos 2400 will be any different.

OPPO ends operations in France despite legal victory against Nokia

Chinese smartphone manufacturer OPPO has decided to halt its operations in France, as reported recently. The company’s main distributor in the region, Yang Technology, is discontinuing sales, resulting in OPPO phones becoming unavailable for purchase in France. The move follows OPPO’s recent triumph in a patent litigation against Nokia. Some speculations suggest that OPPO may be strategically withdrawing from the French market to avoid potential legal disputes.

OPPO’s European Future: Uncertainty Reigns Amidst Market Exits

Interestingly, OPPO’s decision to exit France comes shortly after the closure of its German website, sparking rumors about a possible gradual withdrawal from the European market. However, OPPO has assured its existing customers in France that it will continue to provide after-sales service and software updates.

Previously, OPPO and its sister company OnePlus, both owned by BBK, denied rumors of leaving Europe and the UK, pledging to maintain stable operations in the region. But with OPPO’s departure from France, a significant European market for the company, questions about their future in Europe have emerged. OPPO has mentioned that it will not re-enter the French market until it secures a new distributor.

According to Frandroid, OPPO has assured its customers that their existing orders will be fulfilled, and they can continue to purchase OPPO devices through authorized resellers for the time being.

It is worth noting that OPPO recently won a patent dispute against Nokia in France, with the Paris Court of Justice ruling Nokia’s patents as invalid due to a “lack of novelty.” This legal victory reduces immediate legal threats for OPPO, although Nokia may appeal the decision.

Apple AirPods could soon read your biosignals like brain waves with in-ear electrodes

Apple was granted a patent earlier this month, which hints at future AirPods featuring some major hardware upgrades. The new patent has described AirPods with technology that can read biosignals like your brain waves.

Apple working on AirPods that can map your brain

The Cupertino based giant was granted a patent that describes AirPods that feature tiny electrodes all over the earbuds. These electrodes would allow it to read various biosignals. In the patent document, the company showcased the placement of tiny electrodes all over the housing of both its wired and wireless earphones. Furthermore, these future AirPods will also house both active and reference electrodes that might need to be configured individually for a user’s ear.

These biosignal measurement devices might also be placed at the tip of the earpods. The patent shares some images that reveal how the user can tap on the side to start off the electroencephalography or other forms of measurement. It is worth noting that this is still just a patent. In other words, the future AirPods with brain wave reading technology might not be arriving anytime soon.

Apple has a lot of work going forward since putting small electrodes on AirPods isn’t exactly a simple task. The brand could simply be covering all bases and might not actually be working on such a hearable product. Reading biosignals will also need the iPhone maker to receive proper certifications from the proper authorities. But we recently reported on future AirPods soon offering body temperature and hearing health features.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE wireless charging details revealed through certification

After skipping a generation, Samsung is working on a new fan edition smartphone called the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE. Details about the device have been leaking since last month, and we now have an almost complete picture of what the device will feature in terms of hardware. Now, a listing on the Wireless Power Consortium has revealed details about the wireless charging on the device.

According to the Wireless Power Consortium listing, the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE will support 4.4W wireless charging. This is a bit surprising since its predecessor, the Galaxy S21 FE, had support for up to 15W wireless charging. It’s possible that during the testing, the toggle for fast wireless charging wasn’t enabled, which could explain the lower charging rate.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE specs (rumored)

Recent reports suggest that the Galaxy S23 FE will have a 6.4-inch S-AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. As for the processor, there are rumors of an Exynos 2200 chip, but some countries might get a variant with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. The phone will have two RAM options, 6GB and 8GB, along with 256GB storage.
