NFC Technology: A Closer Look at Features & Developments in the New Roadmap

Near Field Communication (NFC) technology has made significant advancements in recent years, and the NFC Forum, the organization that defines the standards for NFC, has recently revealed a roadmap for key research and plans for NFC through 2028. This roadmap lays out the future direction of NFC technology and highlights the exciting developments expected in the coming years.

What is NFC?

NFC is a short-range wireless communication technology that enables secure and contactless communication between devices. It allows for the exchange of data over short distances, typically a few centimeters, by simply bringing two NFC-enabled devices close together. This technology has gained popularity and is widely used in various applications such as mobile payments, access control, transportation, and more.

Over the years, NFC has experienced significant evolution and widespread adoption. It emerged as a relatively new short-range wireless connectivity technology that enabled seamless communication between NFC-enabled devices. Its simplicity and convenience quickly made it popular among users, leading to its incorporation in various applications.

NFC - Payment
Photo by Jonas Leupe on Unsplash

According to market research reports, the NFC market size is expected to reach USD 34.9 billion by 2025, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.2% during the forecast period. This growth can be attributed to the increasing demand for NFC chips from various industries, including healthcare and retail.

One of the key milestones in the evolution of NFC was the introduction of the NFC Forum, a global consortium consisting of leading technology companies. The NFC Forum played a crucial role in promoting the development and standardization of NFC technology, ensuring interoperability and compatibility across devices. The Forum is comprised of Board representatives from the top tech companies like Apple, Google, Huawei, Identiv, Infineon, NXP, Qualcomm, Sony, and STMicroelectronics.

What’s Exciting In The New NFC Roadmap?

The NFC Forum, recently unveiled an exciting roadmap that outlines key research and plans for the future of NFC through 2028. This roadmap promises significant advancements and improvements to NFC, making it faster, easier, and truly contactless.

Here are the proposed upgrades to the NFC technology.

More Power

NFC forum proposes to increase the wireless charging power of the NFC standard from the current 1W to an impressive 3W. Such an upgrade would unlock wireless power possibilities like bringing wireless power and charging to new and smaller form factors, and also paving the way for innovative applications in new industries that were previously not viable.

Extended Range

Additionally, the roadmap aims to make NFC fully contactless thanks to extended range capabilities, eliminating the need for physical contact between devices.

While the older version typically required devices to be extremely close to each other for communication (5mm), the new standard allows for greater distance between devices (four to six times the current operating distance) without compromising the connection quality. This will provide a more seamless and hygienic interaction, particularly in the post-pandemic era, where contactless technologies are increasingly preferred. Also, it opens up possibilities for applications in areas such as asset tracking and smart home automation, where devices can communicate over longer distances.

Support for Multi Purpose Tap

Additionally, the NFC Forum aims to introduce support for multiple purpose tap, expanding the range of applications and possibilities for NFC technology. This means that NFC will soon be able to support several actions with a single tap. This could potentially have very wide applications including point-to-point receipt delivery, loyalty identification, and total-journey ticketing.

Smartphones with NFC can Be POS Devices

This new plan aims to improve how smartphones with NFC (Near Field Communication) can work like a cash register. This means businesses or people can accept payments anywhere using their smartphones.

Improving NFC’s Sharing of Sustainability Data

The plan also includes ways for NFC to share information about what a product is made of and how it can be recycled. This is important to meet new customer needs and government rules, and it helps contribute to a greener economy.

How New NFC Standard Can Bring Exciting Applications

Looking ahead to the future, the new NFC standard expected to roll out by 2028 promises even more exciting applications. One such application is the integration of NFC technology into healthcare systems. With NFC-enabled medical devices, patients can easily monitor their vital signs and share the data with healthcare professionals. This enables remote patient monitoring, reducing the need for frequent hospital visits and enhancing overall healthcare efficiency.

Payment via NFC
Photo by Mika Baumeister on Unsplash

Another industry that could benefit from the new NFC standard would be transportation. By better implementing NFC technology in public transportation systems, passengers can enjoy seamless ticketing (without having to go and tap on the terminal) and fare payment experiences with better security. NFC-enabled smartphones or smart cards can be used to access various modes of transportation, eliminating the need for separate tickets and reducing paper waste.

In conclusion, the latest roadmap of NFC brings significant advancements compared to the older version. With improved charging speeds, extended range capabilities, and multipurpose tap, NFC becomes even more versatile and reliable across various industries.

US Planning for New Restrictions on AI Chip Exports to China

In a move aimed at maintaining dominance in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and addressing concerns about potential military applications, the United States is reportedly considering implementing new restrictions on the export of AI chips to China. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the US Commerce Department may halt shipments of chips made by Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and other chip companies to customers in China as early as July.

The proposed restrictions have caused a decline in share prices for major chip manufacturers. Following the news, shares of Nvidia (NVDA.O) dropped more than 2%, while Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O) experienced a decline of approximately 1.5% in extended trading.

The deliberations within the US government highlight the White House’s concerns about potential technological advancements made by China in the AI field and the subsequent implications for national security. By tightening trade restrictions, the US aims to maintain its lead in AI technology and prevent Beijing from leveraging it for military purposes.

Nvidia, Micron, and AMD find themselves caught in the crossfire between China and the Biden administration as tensions continue to rise. Last September, Nvidia received a request from US officials to cease exporting two top computing chips specifically designed for AI work to China. In response, the company introduced the A800 chip in China to adhere to export control regulations. Additionally, Nvidia modified its flagship H100 chip earlier this year to comply with the evolving regulatory landscape.

However, the new restrictions being considered by the US Commerce Department would go even further, potentially banning the sale of A800 chips without a special US export license. If implemented, these restrictions could significantly impact the operations and revenue of chip manufacturers operating in both the US and Chinese markets.

The ongoing trade tensions between the two nations continue to pose challenges for companies operating within the semiconductor industry. As geopolitical concerns persist, industry stakeholders are closely monitoring developments and preparing for potential disruptions in the global supply chain.

Electric bicycles have established themselves as a prominent mode of transportation worldwide, and their popularity continues to surge as the electric vehicle revolution is slowly spreading over the world. Embracing the advantages of electric bikes not only benefits the economy but also promotes the general well-being of the population. Germany, in particular, has witnessed a remarkable upswing in the e-bike industry, displaying no signs of slowing down despite initial hesitations earlier this year. In May, favourable weather caused the popularity of e-bikes to go up again. By the end of May 2023, Germany had produced over one million electric bikes, marking a significant five-percent growth compared to the same period last year. This growth is particularly impressive considering the challenging economic climate the country has faced.

Good weather boosted the sales of e-bikes, benefitting the industry

Burkhard Stock, the Managing Director of the Zweirad-Industrie-Verband (ZIV), discussed this unexpected turn of events in a report published by German e-bike publication E-Bike News. He mentioned that they had anticipated a slowdown in the market during the first few months, given the ongoing European war, inflation concerns, general reluctance to make purchases, and adverse weather conditions. However, the arrival of good weather promoted more outdoor time, and that led to a positive shift in the industry.

e-bike

ZIV, a prominent organization in the German and international bicycle industries, plays a crucial role as a governing body and major stakeholder in the European e-bike sector. About 90 percent of all electric bikes produced by German companies are manufactured by ZIV member companies. Their presence ensures the industry’s steady growth and development.

In addition to the domestic market, German-made electric bicycles have gained traction in other parts of the world. In the first quarter of 2023, a staggering 190,000 electric bikes were exported, signifying a significant 28-percent increase compared to the previous year. Notably, a majority of these exports were destined for European Union and European Free Trade Association member countries. With such a strong export performance, it is anticipated that the German e-bike market will produce a total of two million electric bicycles by the end of 2023.

Renault Scenic E-Tech EV Spotted on the Roads during Testing Phase

Renault, a renowned automobile brand, is making its mark in Europe once again with the introduction of the Renault Scenic E-Tech, an upcoming electric vehicle (EV) model. The development of this exciting new addition to Renault’s lineup has been captured in these recently leaked spy shots, providing us with our first glimpse into its design.

Few details peer through the camouflage wrapping the Renault vehicle

To keep the Scenic E-Tech’s appearance under wraps, Renault’s engineering team has covered the exterior with a camouflage wrap, employing blocky panels to further obscure the vehicle’s body. However, certain details manage to shine through. The front of the Scenic E-Tech boasts a sleek nose with a tiny inlet positioned in the lower portion of its face, accompanied by slender headlights that gracefully frame the hood.

Renault Scenic

When viewed from the side, the Scenic E-Tech proudly displays its short overhangs at both ends, giving it a compact yet stylish profile. The C-pillar, with its distinctive angle, adds a touch of elegance to the rear, ensuring that it doesn’t appear too boxy. A subtle spoiler gracefully extends over the back window, enhancing its aerodynamic appeal.

Although the heavy camouflage conceals many details at the rear, the taillights manage to peek through, providing a glimpse of their design. Unfortunately, the interior of the Scenic E-Tech remains a mystery as the spy shots do not provide us with a clear view of the cabin.

Drawing inspiration from the 2022 Renault Scenic Vision concept, the Scenic E-Tech exhibits design elements reminiscent of its counterpart. The Scenic Vision concept showcased sharper creases and a crossover-like appearance, setting it apart from previous Scenic models that traditionally belonged to the MPV segment.

The Scenic Vision concept featured a 215-horsepower electric motor borrowed from the Megane E-Tech, coupled with a 40-kilowatt-hour battery. Additionally, it incorporated a 16-kW hydrogen fuel cell beneath the floor for charging the drive battery.

Renault had previously announced plans for a production version of the Scenic Vision concept, scheduled for release in 2024. This production model would utilize the CMF-EV platform, most likely eliminating the hydrogen range extender seen in the concept. All indications point to the vehicle captured in these new spy shots being the much-anticipated realization of the Scenic Vision concept – a car finally come to life.

China’s Sky Eye FAST Telescope Detects & Sees Gravitational Waves

China‘s Sky Eye FAST telescope, the world’s largest and most sensitive radio astronomy telescope, continues to make groundbreaking discoveries in the field of astronomy. Recently, the Chinese pulsar timing array research team, comprised of scientists from the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other institutions, utilized Sky Eye FAST to detect compelling evidence of nanohertz gravitational waves. This remarkable achievement demonstrates that China’s research in this area is on par with international standards and has even reached a leading position.

The data set containing the Research Data spanned over 3 years

The findings were published in China’s prestigious astronomical journal, “Astronomy and Astrophysics Research,” on June 29. The research team analyzed a data set spanning 3 years and 5 months, collected by Sky Eye FAST, and successfully identified key evidence supporting the existence of nanohertz gravitational waves at a confidence level of 4.6 sigma. Such a high level of confidence signifies a false positive rate of less than 1 in 500,000.

China Telescope

Nanohertz gravitational waves are a type of gravitational wave characterized by an extremely low frequency of 10 to the power of minus 9 Hz. Detecting these waves poses significant challenges due to their ultra-low frequency, long periods lasting several years, and wavelengths stretching across several light-years.

Gravitational waves, as predicted by Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity, are ripples in spacetime caused by the acceleration of objects with mass. Analogous to throwing a stone into a pond and observing the resulting ripples on the surface, these waves propagate outward from the source of mass. Their weak interaction with matter during propagation makes them ideal carriers of valuable information from the depths of the universe. Gravitational wave astronomy, a field of observational astronomy, focuses on using gravitational waves to gather information about violent astronomical events such as binary star systems comprising white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes. Supernovae and the Big Bang also serve as sources of these cosmic disturbances.

The groundbreaking discovery of gravitational waves in 2015 by the LIGO scientific team and subsequent observations have opened up an exciting new chapter in our understanding of the universe. In recognition of their pioneering work, Rainer Weiss, Barry Barish, and Kip Thorne were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017.

China’s significant contributions to gravitational wave research, as evidenced by the latest breakthrough utilizing Sky Eye FAST, reaffirm its position as a global leader in astronomy and showcase the nation’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge. With each new discovery, our understanding of the universe deepens, unveiling its secrets and inspiring future generations of astronomers and scientists.
