Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Series Now Receiving Temperature-Based Menstrual Cycle Tracking Update

Samsung launched the Galaxy Watch 5 series in August last year. It arrived with an infrared sensor for skin temperature measurement. Now the South Korean brand is rolling out an update that introduces a new feature on the Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro models. The feature enables skin temperature-based menstrual cycle tracking for women.

Earlier in February this year, Samsung partnered with Natural Cycles to bring the latest feature for its Galaxy Watch 5 series. Now, after getting regulatory approvals, the new feature is rolling out to all Watch 5 series models in South Korea, the US, UK, and 29 other European countries including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. The temperature-based menstrual cycle tracking feature is been progressively released via Samsung Health app updates.

The new feature update enables accurate menstrual cycle tracking by utilizing the infrared temperature sensor on the Galaxy Watch 5 series. Users had to manually track menstrual cycles until now. Samsung explains that basal body temperature (BBT) varies by menstrual phase and it needs to be measured immediately after waking up. This can be inconvenient and also forgotten. Since the Galaxy Watch 5 series is capable of tracking sleep and its infrared temperature sensor, the new cycle tracking feature can work automatically.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 series will also be able to track ovulation and predict the beginning of the user’s next period by adding their own calendar-based cycle tracking entries. Samsung says that this data is securely encrypted and stored on the device. To use these enhanced features, users need to update the Samsung Health app to the latest version, look for Predict period with skin temp’ option in the settings and enable it. Additionally, the cycle tracking feature will also evaluate self-reported symptoms and provide relevant suggestions such as relaxation techniques.

Samsung warns that if a user takes hormonal birth control or is undergoing treatment, the newly updated feature will not be useful for tracking ovulation. Predictions may also vary depending on how the usage of the Galaxy Watch 5 by the user.

Fairphone Leads the Way in Android Updates, Bringing Android 13 to Older Devices

The confusion surrounding Android updates on smartphones regrettably persists at full speed. While there has been significant improvement compared to a few years ago, users are still concerned about the inconsistent update schedules across different manufacturers. Thankfully, companies like Samsung and Xiaomi are making efforts to address this issue. Recently, Fairphone joined the ranks of these companies, bringing Android 13 to older smartphones through a new beta update. Here are the details…

Android 13 Comes to Fairphone 3 and 3+ Models

A Dutch Android phone manufacturer, Fairphone, has been trying to compete in the market with various modular models for some time. Although their achievements have not brought them significant success so far, the company has not given up. In fact, they have an update policy that would put many of their giant competitors to shame when it comes to older phones. According to the announcement, third-generation Fairphone smartphones will soon move from Android 11 to Android 13.

Even though neither model got the Android 12 update, it’s noteworthy that they haven’t been left behind. It’s important to mention that the average Android phone update lifespan is generally between 2-3 years. With that in mind, it’s clear that more manufacturers should follow Fairphone’s lead. Both models are expected to receive updates by the end of June.

Google wins $20 million appeal over patent dispute for its Chrome tech

Earlier this week, Google managed to convince a US court for an appeal worth multi million over a patent infringement dispute regarding the technology on its Chrome browser. The company managed to cancel three anti malware patents infringement case that were worth 20 million US Dollars.

For those unaware, Cioffi and the late Rozman’s daughters filed a lawsuit against the Search Engine giant over anti malware technology that it employed on its popular web browser, Google Chrome. The claimed that the technology that prevents malware from accessing critical files on your computer in the browser infringed on their patents. Thus, a jury decided that Google had infringed on the patents and awarded the plaintiffs a 20 million US Dollar along with ongoing royalties back in 2017.

Google

Their attorney had revealed back then that this expected amount would total to about 7 million US Dollars per year for the next nine years. However, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit stated that Alfonso Cioffi and Allen Rozman’s patents are invalid since they contained technologies that were not originally included in an earlier version of the patent.

The Federal Circuit also added that the all of the patents were invalid since the three patents that were reissued were based on a previous anti malware patent. In other words, federal law required the new patents to cover the same invention. Furthermore, the appeals court added that the new patents were specifically related to the browser technology, which were details not included in the first patent.

India sees smartphone sales drop by 20% in Q1 2023

The smartphone market in India has apparently taken a hit in the first quarter of this year. The country has seen a noticeable fall in shipments over the same period year on year, so here are all the details.

India

This news arrives from the latest report from Canalys. The report claims that the Indian smartphone shipments have dropped by a sizeable 20 percent year on year in Q1 2023. Interestingly, this decline follows after the modest 6 percent drop back in the fourth and final quarter of last year. The report adds that the Indian smartphone market has seen the hit due to issues with market demand and stock build up has also affected various sales channels.

India

But despite the decline, the South Korean tech giant, Samsung, managed to retain its market leader with a notable 21 percent market share by shipping around 6.3 million units in Q1 2023. On the other hand, Oppo and Vivo took the second and third spots respectively, with both companies accounting for around 18 percent market share. Xiaomi came in fourth with a 16 percent market share, while Realme came fifth with a 9 percent market share.

India

The Canalys report noted that consumers in India are more comfortable with spending more on premium smartphone models. This means that brands would have to adapt and make its devices be great value for money. According to Sanyam Chaurasia, Analyst at Canalys, “India’s market struggles but vendors remain optimistic. They invest in retail, manufacturing, local sourcing, and R&D to align with the government and consumers. They aim for long term market success.”

Apple Takes a Cue from Samsung and Huawei, Adds Optical Zoom to iPhone 15 Pro Max

It has been almost six months since the iPhone 14 series entered our lives. Although this is not a very long time, Apple has already started working on the iPhone 15 models. As these efforts continue, some information comes to light. The latest piece of information revealed is about the camera features. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to feature 5-6x optical zoom. Here are the details…

iPhone 15 Pro Max Expected to Feature 5-6x Optical Zoom

iPhones often make headlines for their camera performance. Although the company consistently offers improved quality, it lags behind competitors when it comes to new features. For example, Samsung offers up to 100x zoom with both digital and optical zoom, while Apple introduced 3x optical zoom with the iPhone 14 Pro series. When digital is included, this number goes up to 15x. However, rumors suggest that will change this year. The next-gen iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to feature a “periscope lens” that would allow for up to double the optical zoom.

Apple

It’s no surprise that Apple will be using a periscope lens in the iPhone 15 Pro Max models. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had made similar claims some time ago and stated that the feature would only be available in Pro models. This type of lens will allow for up to 5-6x zoom. As a result, there will be no loss of quality when capturing an object at a distance with the rear camera.

A periscope lens is like a camera that uses mirrors and lenses to zoom in really far without making the device bigger. It’s based on the periscope used in submarines to see above water while staying hidden. In smartphones, a periscope lens helps to take high-quality zoom photos by bending light through mirrors and keeping the camera small. Many manufacturers such as Samsung and Huawei already use this feature on their products.

iPhone 14 users report hardware defects causing daily crashes and reboots

Apple’s iPhone 14 is reportedly facing an issue that has many users complaining about frequent automatic restarts. According to reports from China, some users are experiencing as many as one or two restarts or crashes per day, with many speculating that the issue is related to hardware.

The “Black Cat Complaints” WeChat account received many complaints from users who purchased an iPhone 14 from an Apple-authorized dealer. Some users claim that after a first remote diagnosis and analysis report via the customer service hotline, they were told there were no hardware problems. However, after a second call, they were told it was a software upgrade issue. The issue appears to be widespread, with many users calling for Apple to provide a solution.

iPhone 14 all colors

One user complained that they were only offered a new iPhone 14 without packaging when they took their device to an authorized after-sales dealer. This user is demanding to exchange the device for a new machine that has not been opened, in accordance with the three guarantee requirements. Another user had their iPhone 14 repaired at an authorized dealer, only to find a small crack in the lower right corner of the back screen that the dealer refused to repair.

It remains to be seen how Apple will respond to the complaints and whether it will provide a solution to affected users. If the issue is related to hardware, it could be an expensive and time-consuming problem for Apple, potentially requiring recalls or widespread repairs. Apple has a reputation for producing reliable devices, so any setback related to the iPhone 14 would be a significant one for the company. As of now, Apple and its authorized stores have yet to respond to the matter.

The Realme 11 series is set to launch sometime next month. The company has been teasing these upcoming devices ahead of the China announcement, but prior to the launch, the design of the base model has been revealed via a TENAA sighting.

Just earlier this week, we had reported on the Realme 11 Pro+ model being spotted on the same certification website. The listing revealed its design as well as some of its key specifications. This includes a Dimensity 7 series chipset that clocks in at 2.6GHz. So now, we also have a proper look at the base Realme 11 model. Looking at the TENAA sighting, the device carries the model number RMX3751.

Looking at the images on TENAA, the Realme 11 5G model sports a flat display with rounded corners. The front also houses a punch hole selfie camera on the top left corner. On the other hand, the rear features a large circular camera island, similar to the higher end Realme 11 Pro+ model as well. As of right now, finer details regarding this device like its specifications and pricing. Although, the various teasers have revealed its official launch timeline.

The Chinese smartphone maker is gearing up to unveil the new Realme 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro+ model in May in its home market. Based on what we know so far, the vanilla model is believed to feature a 64 megapixel triple camera setup on the rear, while the front could sport a 6.6 inch AMOLED display.
