Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Narrowly Wins Drop Test Against iPhone 14 Pro Max

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S23 Ultra last month. It is the brand’s strongest smartphone equipped with an armour aluminium frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both the front and rear. A comprehensive durability test by JerryRigEverything rendered the smartphone structurally sound. Now, another YouTuber PhoneBuff has stacked the Galaxy S23 Ultra against the iPhone 14 Pro Max in a drop test. For those unaware, the latter features a ceramic shield glass and stainless steel frame.

The test by PhoneBuff has four rounds of drop tests. In the first round both the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro Max were dropped flat on their backs. It shattered the rear glass of the back panel completely and a dent was also seen on its rear camera lens. Meanwhile, the S23 Ultra suffered slight cracks around two corners. In round two’s corner drop test, the iPhone 14 Pro Max performed better as the stainless steel frame received minor scratches. In comparison, the S23 Ultra’s aluminium frame suffered more damage. The third round included both phones falling on the concrete floor flat on their front. The screens on both devices were shattered but we could notice it to be more on the S23 Ultra. The Face ID on iPhone and the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner on the Ultra were working perfectly fine.

In the fourth and final bonus test, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro Max were dropped face-down on a metal surface and that too from a higher height than the previous rounds. The iPhone 14 Pro Max suffered significant damage with parts of its protective glass missing. Additionally, both the front and rear cameras showed some light flares.

After grading across all four rounds the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra scored 38 points, two more than the iPhone 14 Pro winning the test by a narrow margin.

Apple, Samsung, and Other Tech Giants Experience Decline in Wearables Shipments During Q4 2022

The wearables market has been experiencing a steady rise for a few years with tech giants like Apple, Xiaomi, Huawei, Samsung, and Google pushing the boundaries of what these devices can do. However, Canalys’ report reveals a significant decline in wearables shipments during Q4 of 2022, which is the largest since data has been analyzed. Here are the details…

Basic Bands Sales Decline Affects Total Wearables Market Despite Smartwatches Growth

Canalys reports that only 50 million wearables units were shipped between October and December 2022, marking an 18% decline from the previous year. This decline affected all five major companies. Though Apple saw annual growth for the full calendar year, it was not immune to the Q4 slump. The report attributes the decline to a challenging macroeconomic environment in Q4, which could be attributed to several factors like supply chain disruptions, inflation, and consumer spending habits.

Apple retained its position as the market leader due to its popularity among iPhone users. Google took second place with the Pixel Watch despite a 25% decline in Fitbit devices. Xiaomi, Huawei, and Samsung all experienced YoY declines in shipments during the holiday period. Canalys categorizes wearables into basic bands, basic watches, and smartwatches. However, the differences between these categories are becoming increasingly blurry with every new device release.

Canalys predicts that smartwatches will continue to grow at around 10%, but the decline in interest for basic bands will set the total wearables market at a modest 2% rise. The wearables market has been a hotly contested space in the tech industry, with major players constantly vying for dominance. However, the Q4 slump shows that even the biggest players are not immune to market fluctuations. It will be interesting to see how these companies adapt to the changing market conditions and continue to innovate in the coming years.

Huawei’s Upcoming Folding Phone Will Have a Major Battery Tech Upgrade

Huawei may have done a technological breakthrough in the battery field, revealing that it will be upgrading the battery of its upcoming foldable smartphone, which is rumored to be the Mate X3. According to Digital Chat Station, a well-known tipster, Huawei will use high-silicon anode material to enhance the battery capacity to 5060mAh (typical value).

The new foldable smartphone will feature a larger screen, which will require a better battery life. Currently, the industry is facing limitations in terms of improving the cathode material energy density of mobile phone batteries. Huawei’s breakthrough in the battery field will offer better energy density and a larger battery capacity.

Huawei Mate X2
Huawei Mate X2

However, the high-silicon anode batteries used in Huawei’s new mobile phone presented some technical difficulties. They have a large volume expansion coefficient, low first charge and discharge efficiency, and high resistivity. Huawei has overcome these challenges by using carbon-coated structures and innovative flexible polymer binders to inhibit expansion and shedding.

In addition, Huawei has incorporated the use of lithium foil to supplement lithium, which has increased the efficiency of the first charge and discharge by 26%. The company has also utilized carbon nanotube technology in silicon anode batteries, which has improved the conductivity by four times and enhanced the performance of the silicon anode batteries.

The use of high-silicon anode batteries in the upcoming folding screen mobile phone will result in higher energy density, larger battery capacity, and a 21% increase in energy density compared to traditional graphite anode materials. Huawei has also incorporated AI parallel power management, 15-layer security protection, and intelligent charging management to ensure higher charging efficiency and safer charging.

Microsoft Bing Has Hit the 100 Million Daily Active Users Milestone

Microsoft has just announced that it has achieved a notable milestone with its proprietary web search engine, Bing. The company revealed that its daily active users number on Bing has crossed 100 million.

According to Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s VP for Modern Life, Search and Devices, the news arrives just a month after the company had rolled out its AI Chatbot. The senior official stated that the brand is aware that is still a “small, low, single digit share player” but it is still a big deal considering that Bing wasn’t even a notable player in the market. However, following the release of the latest build, the company saw its one third of its daily active users being new to the search engine.

Microsoft

According to the Vice President, “We see this appeal of the new Bing as a validation of our view that search is due for a reinvention and of the unique value proposition of combining Search + Answers + Chat + Creation in one experience.” Interestingly enough, the new boost in users also include a number of people that used the platform but not for its search engine.

In other words, a third of Bing’s daily preview users have been using its chat AI for their queries everyday. Furthermore, Microsoft is seeing three chats per session with over 45 million chats. Out of these, 15 percent of all chats include users that have been using it to create new content. Notably, a big part of the boost is also likely thanks to the launch of Bing’s AI Chatbot on mobile.

China Sees Sharp Fall in Semiconductor Imports: US Sanctions Taking a Toll on the Industry

China saw a sharp fall in its semiconductor imports in the first two months of 2023. According to the data published by the Chinese customs department, the country’s chip imports fell by 27% in January and February 2023. It is unsurprising that imports have declined, considering that China experienced a 15% decrease in semiconductor imports last year, the first drop of this magnitude in two decades.

According to data published by the General Administration of customs, China imported 67.6 billion Integrated Circuits (IC) in the last two months which is 26.5% less than the imports for the same period in the previous year.  The total value of imports also fell from $68.8 billion to $47.8 billion, which is a 30.5 % fall. Even though the global chip prices are falling, China is not able to take the advantage of the competitive pricing as it is facing major restrictions on trade from the US.

The ongoing US-China Trade War:

Last year the US banned the sale of advanced chips used for artificial intelligence and cloud computing to China. The Biden administration not only banned the sale of chips but also the sale of semiconductor technology, manufacturing equipment, and personnel. The US has not only banned its companies from exporting semiconductors and related technology to China but also roped in allies like Japan, Netherlands, Taiwan, and South Korea to stop their companies from exporting semiconductors to China.

The sanctions and curbs have limited China’s options for import as major semiconductor companies like Nvidia, ASML, Tokyo Electronics, and more are now barred from selling their advanced technology and products to China. To make matters worse, Washington is now planning to limit the use of semiconductors manufactured within China by foreign companies that use US technology. This means companies like Samsung and SK Hynix which have their fabrication units in China may not be allowed to manufacture and sell chips made in China.

Effects of US sanctions on the Chinese Semiconductor Industry:

The US-China trade war started in 2018 when then-president Donald Trump imposed sanctions and tariffs on exports to China in order to stop alleged unfair trade practices and intellectual property thefts.

The US has already added Chinese tech giants Huawei and ZTE to the infamous entity list.  The list has more than 639 Chinese or China-related businesses and individuals on the trade blacklist. Companies on the entity list are banned from receiving  US-origin goods, services, and technology.

China’s biggest chipmaker SMIC is also on the entity list. This has hindered the expansion plans of SMIC as the mass production at SMIC Jingcheng is postponed by a couple of quarters due to a delay in getting bottleneck equipment from foreign companies.

China is the world’s largest semiconductor market and accounts for almost one-third of global sales. The semiconductor industry plays a vital role in the country’s technology sector and accounts for almost 30% of the GDP.  However, the country is not self-sufficient in this field, as it is heavily dependent on foreign nations for advanced technology and equipment.

Though the semiconductor imports have declined in 2023, other manufacturing industries have revived and grown in the last two months after China withdrew its zero-covid policy in December 2023.

Facebook Is Finally Integrating Messenger Back into the App

Facebook just announced earlier today (9th March 2023) that it will be utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance user experience and create more opportunities for its creators. But apart from this, a major new change is that it is finally bringing back Messenger back into its original application.

The social media giant had recently announced that it had hit the 2 billion daily active user milestone and that it was planning on releasing new ‘Creative Expression’ tools for Facebook users to create 90 second reels. While all of this gives more options to the creators, the news that I personally look forward to is the reintegration of the Messenger app into Facebook. For those unaware, the tech giant had spun off its messaging inbox section into a dedicated app on the side years ago.

Facebook

This decision had a fair share of criticism. But now, Facebook is planning on making the experience more intuitive by letting users access their Messenger inbox within the app. Based on official notes, more than 140 billion messages are sent across the Facebook’s apps every day. The number of people sharing Reels has also cross the 1 billion mark on Instagram DMs and are also growing rapidly on Facebook.

Thus, the company is testing the ability for people to access their Messenger inbox within the app and plans to expand this testing phase. In other words, the social media platform is planning on offering more ways to integrate the messaging features in the platform to make it easier for users to connect and share with one another.

DuckDuckGo Introduces ChatGPT-Powered Search Tool, DuckAssist

ChatGPT taking internet by storm, as the artificial intelligence is being used in many different services. Recently, it was integrated into Bing and other Microsoft services, which brought great success to the company and caused a rise in the search engine’s popularity. Now, DuckDuckGo, another search engine, is following suit by releasing its own ChatGPT-powered search tool, DuckAssist. Here are the details…

DuckAssist: DuckDuckGo’s New ChatGPT Based AI Search Feature

DuckDuckGo has released a new tool called DuckAssist. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology called ChatGPT to give users quick and accurate answers to their search queries. The answers are gathered from websites like Wikipedia and presented in a way that looks similar to regular search results.

DuckDuckGo DuckAssist

First of all, we must warn that DuckAssist isn’t a chatbot, so users don’t need to talk to it. Instead, it shows users an automatic answer when it recognizes a question it can answer. This feature will be especially useful for straightforward questions like “What is a search engine index?” and others that have simple, factual answers. The ChatGPT-powered tool is currently in beta and is free to use on the DuckDuckGo app and browser extension.

DuckDuckGo is committed to keeping users’ data private, and DuckAssist is no exception. It won’t collect any personal information or require users to log in. The company also plans to keep users’ search and browsing history anonymous when sharing data with its partners, OpenAI and Anthropic, who helped develop the ChatGPT technology.

If DuckAssist proves to be popular, DuckDuckGo plans to roll it out to everyone using the search tool on its website. Users can also provide feedback on the AI-generated answers anonymously, which will help the company improve the tool.

Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1

Digital Chat Station claims that the CPU configuration will be identical, however, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 will have lower clock speeds and an Adreno 725 GPU running at 580 MHz, compared to the Adreno 730 running at an 800 MHz base clock found in the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Despite the lower clock speeds, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 is expected to outperform MediaTek’s Dimensity 8200. Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 will be manufactured on TSMC’s 4nm fabrication node.

According to Digital Chat Station, multiple smartphone brands are lined up to launch their smartphones with the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 chipset, and we could see the launch of the first smartphone powered by the SM7475 chipset by the end of this month.

WHYLAB, a well-known tech influencer, has shared on Weibo that the upcoming Redmi Note 12 Turbo smartphone could be powered by this SoC. The device is expected to launch globally as the POCO F5.

Xiaomi, Realme, OPPO, Vivo, and other smartphone makers are expected to adopt the new chipset. Qualcomm and Xiaomi are both known for their innovation and partnership in the smartphone business, and the new products from both companies are expected to provide higher performance, efficiency, and connectivity for users looking for high-end gadgets at low rates.

Lenovo Launches 140W Power Adapter for Its Legion Y9000P 2023 Gaming Laptop

Earlier today (9th March 2023), Lenovo launched a new power adapter for one of its Legion gaming laptops. The new adapter in question is the C140 Power Adapter model that is built fort the 2023 Legion Y900P gaming notebook.

The Chinese PC maker has released the new power adapter to be an alternative for the original adapter that the Y9000P ships with. C140 model basically comes in a more compact and portable form factor, meaning it is smaller than the original adapter and is better suited for those that travel often or work/game on the go. As the name suggests, the new GaN adapter offers 140W power output with a single USB Type C port.

This is quite impressive considering this marks a rise from the 135W charging prowess over its predecessors, despite having a compact design. Furthermore, the company is offering the new C140 power adapter in two color options, namely White and Black. According to official notes, Lenovo’s new Legion Y9000P 2023 series gaming laptops support 140W portable fast charging.

Thanks to this, it can reach 92 percent of the actual game frame rate that it could achieve with the original adapter. For those unaware, the Legion laptops are equipped with beefy components that are quite power hungry. Thus, the Legion Y9000P 2023 edition’s top end model features a 330W GaN adapter, which can run the gaming laptop that has a total power draw of 250W.
