Flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Dimensity 9100 SoCs Manufactured by TSMC, Alongside Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 and Dimensity 8200 as well – Report

After switching over from Samsung’s 4nm foundry to TSMC’s 4nm semiconductor production foundry, the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC manufactured on TSMC’s 4nm advanced node process showed significantly better CPU performance, better GPU performance alongside much-improved power efficiency, and thermals compared its peers, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Snapdragon 888+ and Snapdragon 888 SoCs that were manufactured on Samsung’s 4nm and 5nm node process.

Thus, after getting flak and bad press coverage of the overheating and quality control issues for its previous flagship SoCs, Qualcomm did announce that it will be ditching Samsung and moving forward with TSMC only for its flagship SoCs, specifically the Snapdragon 8 series of SoCs.

And in a recent report by Chinese technology leakster, Digital Chat Station on Weibo, they shared the news that Qualcomm and MediaTek’s upcoming next-generation smartphone SoCs will be manufactured via TSMC’s foundry.

DCS Weibo Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Dimensity 9100 TSMC
Source: Weibo

The Weibo post states that there will be 4 upcoming smartphone SoCs that will be manufactured by TSMC, which are respectively the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, MediaTek Dimensity 9100, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 2, and the MediaTek Dimensity 8200.

Dimensity-Snapdragon-logo

According to industry insiders, the development of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is faster than the MediaTek Dimensity 9100 within TSMC, whilst the development of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 is faster than the MediaTek Dimensity 8200 within TSMC.

Both the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Dimensity 9100 SoC are said to present in many Android flagships that are to be announced in 2023, while the Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 and MediaTek Dimensity 8200 SoCs will be catered to the mid-range Android market.

The report also states that the Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 is to be an iterative upgrade over the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, with little to no changes to the core layout nor ISPs, and the major difference would be the switch from Samsung’s 4nm process on the 7 Gen 1, to TSMC’s 4nm process on the 7 Gen 2. And due to the fact that the next-generation Snapdragon 7 is an iterative upgrade, it could be instead called the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 instead of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 2.

As for the popularity of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, it is only featured on one smartphone in the market, which is the Oppo Reno 8 Pro mid-range smartphone that is exclusive to China. Presumably because of the bad reputation of Qualcomm’s SoCs that are manufactured by Samsung, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 isn’t garnering a lot of customers among Android smartphone manufacturers, whilst the Snapdragon 778G and 778G+ which are under TSMC’s 6nm foundry seem to be the more prevalent choice for Android smartphone makers instead.

If you fancy picking up a power-efficient Snapdragon 778G+ smartphone yourself, there are 3 options you should consider: the Honor 70 which was launched in IFA Berlin 2022 last week, the Nothing Phone (1) announced by OnePlus founder Carl Pei, and the Motorola Edge 30 which has stock Android software with minimal bloatware for users.

Realme GT 2 vs Motorola S30 Pro: Specs Comparison

Last month Motorola announced two amazing flagship phones: the Motorola X30 Pro and the Motorola S30 Pro. While the former is the top-tier flagship, the latter is a flagship killer more focused on the quality price ratio. That is the reason why it is definitely one of the most interesting phones of this year for those who search for the max performance at an affordable price. But in order to understand whether or not this is the best flagship killer you can buy, it is worth comparing it to its most important rivals in the current market. Among these, we got the Realme GT 2 released earlier this year: we chose this device because it is currently available at very interesting street prices, so it is a perfect rival for the new Lenovo handset. So, here is a comparison between the main specifications of the Realme GT 2 and the Motorola X30 Pro.

Design

The design of the Motorola Moto S30 Pro is more premium and curated than the Realme GT 2. First of all, this device is thinner, lighter, and more compact than its rival. Further, it comes with a curved screen at the sides, just like the most beautiful flagships. Last but not least, it has a glass back protected by Gorilla Glass 5 and it is splash and dust resistant. You can not find any of these pros on the Relame GT 2, but it is still an interesting device because two of its three color options are made with a special bio-polymer resembling the touch and feel of real paper. You can even draw on the phone with a pencil and erase with a rubber. However, this is not enough for it to win the design comparison as we prefer the elegance of the Motorola S30 Pro. Do you agree with us?

Display

The display of the Motorola Moto S30 Pro looks better than the one found on the Realme GT 2. It is a P-OLED panel manufactured by LG which is able to show up to one billion colors. It has a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a great 144 Hz refresh rate, and the HDR10+ certification. It comes with a diagonal of 6.55 inches, curved edges, and an in-display fingerprint reader. The Realme GT 2 has an OLED display with a Full HD+ resolution and HDR10+ as well, but its refresh rate is lower at just 120 Hz and it is not able to show one billion colors. On the other hand, it is the only one featuring stereo speakers, even though it does not provide a 3.5 mm audio jack. Do you prefer having a better display or better audio on a phone?

Specs & Software

Even though these devices are very similar in terms of performance, the Motorola Moto S30 Pro is slightly better. First of all, it has a superior chipset: the Snapdragon 888+ is actually an upgrade of the Snapdragon 888 found on the Realme GT 2. It is a chipset built with a 5 nm production process coming with an octa-core architecture composed of a Cortex X1 CPU running at a max frequency of 2.99 GHz, three Cortex A78 CPUs running at 2.42 GHz, and four Cortex A55 CPUs running at 1.8 GHz, as well as an Adreno 660 GPU. The chipset is paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage, while the Realme GT 2 stops at 256 GB of internal storage in its most expensive configuration. Both handsets run Android 12 out of the box, customized by Realme UI 3.0 and MYUI 4.0, respectively. Note that the GT 2 will get three major Android updates and four years of security patches as per the latest Realme update policies.

Camera

The Realme GT 2 and the Motorola S30 Pro come with the same main camera: a 50 MP Sony IMX766 sensor with a 50 MP resolution, an f/1.8 focal aperture, and OIS. The Motorola actually sports a better ultrawide camera with a 13 MP resolution (against just 8 MP), as well as a better front camera with a 32 MP resolution (against 16 MP). So, we can definitely say that the Motorola S30 Pro has a better camera setup.

Battery

The most important advantage of the Realme GT 2 over its rival is definitely the battery capacity. Thanks to a 5000 mAh battery, it lasts a lot longer on a single charge and its rival is not able to compete in any way, especially if we consider that it has similar specifications but a 4400 mAh battery. The charging technologies are very similar, so expect similar charging speeds, but the Motorola will obviously be quicker to reach full charge due to its smaller battery.

Price

The Motorola S30 Pro starts from €330/$330 in the Chinese market, while the Realme GT 2 can easily be found for less than €400/$400 in the global market. Overall, the Motorola S30 Pro is superior, if we exclude the battery.

Xiaomi Electric Scooter 3 Lite launched in Europe starting at €446

Since the launch of the MIJIA M365 electric scooter in 2017, Xiaomi has continued to improve on the model with subsequent releases due to the popularity of the e-scooter. Earlier this year, the company unveiled the MIJIA Electric Scooter 3 Lite in China. The tech giant has now quietly launched the same model but named Xiaomi Scooter 3 Lite in Europe.  Xiaomi Electric Scooter 3 Lite

The Xiaomi Electric Scooter 3 Lite is currently accessible in several countries on the continent through Amazon. The scooter, for example, costs €446.27 ($444.07) in France, €449.99 ($447.77) in Spain, €453.71 ($451.47) in Italy, and €495.88 (US$493.43) in the Netherlands. While most countries only offer the e-scooter in white at the moment, a black variant of the scooter is available in Spain. The scooter retailed at 1,899 yuan (~$298) in China and so, is selling at almost twice the price in Xiaomi’s home market.

As a reminder, the Xiaomi Electric Scooter 3 Lite’s frame is said to be 10mm thinner than that of the MIJIA Electric Scooter 1s which was launched in 2020. The reduced frame size is said to offer the scooter a lower center of gravity and a more stable ride. The body is made of high-strength aluminum alloy material, which makes the body lighter and easier, and more convenient to carry.Xiaomi Electric Scooter 3 Lite

In terms of design, the Xiaomi Electric Scooter 3 Lite removes the complicated design of the forehead to create a visual minimalist and light feeling. At the same time, the light is moved down to “reduce the burden” on the forehead. The screen ratio of the instrument cluster is also increased and you get an optimized screen control experience.

Furthermore, the new electric scooter has a 13% increase in climbing ability, a maximum speed of 25km/h, and a rated power of 250W. The scooter’s range is just 20km making it suitable for short commutes. Also, the front hub cover is set to add retro elements.

In recent years, more and more companies have started to focus AI and Robots. Recently, Xiaomi unveiled its bionic robot called CyberOne, which looked quite interesting and advanced. And Last week, during the China International Service Trade Fair, Lenovo unveiled its first self-developed “remote stand-in” robot called the Lenovo Morningstar Robot S1.

As a “remote stand-in” robot, Morningstar S1 innovatively integrates the metaverse and industrial robots, says Lenovo. The robot is claimed to be used for remote inspections. It can be widely used in ordinary manual assembly lines, spraying workshops, radioactive laboratories, and other environments according to the needs of different production scenarios.

Morningstar S1 comes with a pair of AR glasses that can be used to view all the images and videos the robot captures in real-time. As per the company, the Robot’s body is made up of recycled plastic and low-carbon aluminum, which improves performance and durability while also leaving fewer carbon footprints, hence being more environment friendly.

Lenovo Morningstar Robot is said to have a height of 142cm, which is somewhat similar to the height of human vision.
