OPPO Reno3, K7x ColorOS 12 open beta recruitment starts

ColorOS 12 open beta recruitment for the OPPO Reno3 5G and K7x has started in China, kicking off on April 7th and will last until April 8th. Applications will be reviewed within 5 working days following which selected applicants will get an OTA for the update after another 3 days.

OPPO K7x users need to ensure that they’re on firmware version C.08 while OPPO Reno3 5G users need to check they’re updated to firmware C.14, in order to receive the OTA. This can be done by heading over to Settings > About Phone > Version Information > Version Number.

oppo reno3 5g featured

It should be noted here that the ColorOS 12 update that will be rolled out will be a beta, meaning it’s not guaranteed to provide a stable experience. It’s true that the builds will have passed internal testing, but they’ll likely be rough around the edges, so expect bugs and abnormal power consumption. Therefore, it’s not recommended to apply for the beta unless you’re sure of what you’re doing.

OPPO also warns that since ColorOS 12 is based on Android 12, some third-party applications may run into compatibility issues — although the version has been out for months now so you should be just fine. Also recommended is backing up the data prior to the update process.

To apply for the open beta, head over to Settings > Software Update > Click the settings icon on the screen > Apply for Beta Version > Update Beta Version.

Do keep in mind that you’ll only be able to apply if you reside in China. There’s no word yet on the open beta recruitment for the global variants of these devices so you’d wanna wait a bit for that.

realme Smart TV Stick launched: 1080p streaming, Android TV 11, and more

Late last year, realme entered the streaming device category with the launch of the realme 4K Smart Google TV Stick. A few months later, the brand has now debuted its second product in the segment at the realme GT2 Pro launch event in India. The latest streaming device by the company is officially called ‘realme Smart TV Stick’. Let’s check out how it differs from the previous model.

realme Smart TV Stick

realme Smart TV Stick Specifications and Features

The realme Smart TV Stick looks identical to the realme 4K Smart Google TV Stick. But it comes with watered-down features.

The latest streaming stick from realme is limited to 1080p (FHD) streaming at 60fps. For comparison, the original stick can output up to 4K 60fps. Anyway, just like the old model, the new one also has support for HDR10+.

Going by the supported resolution and HDMI 1.4 connector on the new streaming device, we believe that realme is targeting consumers who want to turn their old HD/FHD non-smart televisions into smart.

Further, both the realme-branded streaming sticks are powered by the same chipset. Although the company does not tell the name, it does mention the CPU configuration. This mysterious chip has a quad-core ARM Cortex-A35 CPU. However, the latest product has only 1GB RAM compared to 2GB on the older one.

realme Smart TV Stick

Another notable difference between the two is software. As the name suggests, the original realme TV Stick comes with the Google TV interface on top of Android TV 11 operating system. On other hand, the new model lacks Google TV UI but it does have support for all the popular streaming platforms, Chromecast Built-in, and Google Assistant.

Finally, the new streaming stick comes with a MicroUSB port for power input, dual-band WiFi, and Bluetooth 5.0.

realme Smart TV Stick Price and Availability

The realme Smart TV Stick is priced at ₹2,999 in India. In other words, it is ₹1,000 cheaper than the realme 4K Smart Google TV Stick, which retails at ₹3,999.

The streaming device will go on sale starting at 12 PM on April 13. It can be purchased from realme.com, Flipkart, and partner retail stores across the country.

DESIGN

Foxin FMS 4040 speaker review 11

The 4.1 channel Foxin 4040 speaker system comes with a pretty simple design. You won’t find anything fancy about these speakers, but the design is subtle, with a texture in the lower half that’s common across the five units. One thing I noticed is that the speaker’s surface is prone to scratches, so take extra care when cleaning them.Foxin FMS 4040 speaker review 03

On the subwoofer, you’ll find a bunch of physical buttons for things like adjusting volume, Play/Pause, FM scanning, and changing modes.Foxin FMS 4040 speaker review 02 On the front, you also get an LED display that shows the volume levels and functions. The overall design is pretty uncomplicated and should blend in with your existing furniture.

Also, note that the four satellite speakers come with a wall mount.

Foxin FMS 4040 speaker review 10

Coming to the back, the Foxin 4040 speaker system supports RCA connectors for AUX input. You can also connect to these speakers via Bluetooth. So they can connect to your smartphone, desktop, or laptop systems. However, you’ll have a hard time getting these speakers to work with your TV. You’ll have to get an adapter that converts RCA to optical in order to achieve this.

Foxin FMS 4040 speaker review 06

You’ll also find a physical switch at the back to turn on the speakers. Above the physical switch, there’s a knob for adjusting the bass levels. But there’s a good chance that you’ll miss this button behind the FM Cable antenna.

It does a pretty decent job at controlling the overall bass of the system.

Foxin FMS 4040 speaker review 05

Finally, the speaker also comes with a remote. It has a very traditional design and the range is short (5 meters). But the remote works as you would expect and includes a button for the equalizer which switches between preset menus like pop, jazz, rock, etc.

Foxin 4040 Sound PerformanceFoxin FMS 4040 speaker review 14

The Foxin 4040 supports Bluetooth, Aux, and FM radio modes. The speaker also features a USB-A port on the side.

Foxin FMS 4040 speaker review USB 01

As for the sound performance, the Foxin 4040 outputs pretty good sound for its price. The subwoofer does a good job of producing low-end bass. The best part about the speaker is that you can control the bass output separately using the knob at the back, and at no point will it overpower the mids or the highs.

The speaker even outputs good mids and the vocals are clear. However, the highs are a bit shrill and if there are a lot of instruments involved, the sound output can get a bit messy.

Foxin FMS 4040 speaker review 07
FM mode

As you can imagine, this makes the Foxin 4040 good for playing music with strong lows and mids. It was fun listening to songs like Go Down Deh, and Jalebi Baby. But when I tried a few Bollywood songs with a lot of instruments and a lot of highs, the experience wasn’t as good.

That said, if you tweak the equalizer, you should be able to squeeze out decent output even for the highs.

While watching movies or YouTube videos, the speaker produced clear vocals and decent low-end grunt, so the experience was fairly immersive.

In short, these speakers offer pretty decent low-end and mid-range output but struggle with the highs. However, I feel this kind of sound signature is acceptable. They offer a reasonably good output for the asking price.

Foxin FMS 4040 speaker review 04

After all, for INR 2500, the Foxin 4040 is one of the cheapest 4.1 speaker systems that you can find in the market right now. This makes it a good choice for people who are a little tight on budget.

AnkerMake M5 3D Printer launched on Kickstarter starting at $499

Phone accessories and audio products manufacturer Anker is expanding its business to include the manufacture of 3D printers. The AnkerMake M5 3D printer which has just been launched on Kickstarter is Anker’s first-ever 3D printer – and it packs some exciting features with it. The AnkerMake M5 is primed to challenge the leading 3D printing brands for the top spot in the field.AnkerMake M5 3D Printer

Anker has a rich vein of trusted products from phone chargers to audio products. It hopes to leverage the excellent capabilities of the AnkerMake M5 to break into the 3D printing market. The AnkerMake M5 is priced at $499 as an introductory offer but the original price is $759, according to the company. Some of the innovations that come with the printer include a smart webcam that provides video and control services during the printing process. The webcam can automatically pause a print job when it observes deviation from the printing quality expected. It will also notify the user about the problem.AnkerMake M5 3D Printer

The AnkerMake M5 is claimed to print faster than any of the current brands in the market. Anker even claims that the printer is five times faster than any of the competing brands in the market. Anker also says that the 3D printer can easily be set up from the box and straightaway proceed to 250mm/sec printing. The implications of this fast printing model can be outstanding in the field. Most of the current 3D printers can only boast 50mm/sec speeds or less and the AnkerMake M5 could change all that.

While it is not clearly stated the mechanism that accounts for the enhanced speed of the printer, Anker points to some innovative measures that could have enhanced the printing speed. It says the Y-axis build plate is being moved by a fancy stepper motor with high subdivision drivers and two belts. In addition, advanced algorithms for a seamless process are also part of the innovations.AnkerMake M5 3D Printer

It is unclear how durable the AnkerMake M5 is and how the expectations will be matched by the product itself. The Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign is aimed at providing the needed investment to drive the delivery of the product. A September date has been set for the first deliveries and we hope that Anker will follow the timeline.

Samsung to reportedly develop processors specifically for Galaxy smartphones

Samsung is one of the handfuls of smartphone companies that also develops its own processors or chips. The Exynos chips from the South Korean giant haven’t been able to match up to the offerings from Apple and Qualcomm.

Even though Samsung manufacturers chips, the company doesn’t have an exclusive lineup of processors for its own smartphones. But if the latest report is to be believed, then that is about the change soon.

Samsung Exynos

As per the latest report, Samsung is planning to develop chipsets exclusively for its own smartphones. This is a major step from the South Korean giant as reports indicate the System LSI division which makes chips and the Mobile eXperience (MX) division for mobile phones do not have a very close relationship.

It is being claimed that for Samsung’s System LSI division, the MX unit of the company is just like other customers who procure chips. The mobile processors manufactured by Samsung are also used in phones from other brands, including Vivo.

The report adds that TM Roh, President and Head of Samsung MX Business said during a town hall meeting that Samsung will now make processors specifically for the Galaxy lineup of smartphones. It is also said that Samsung has internally acknowledged that its employees “have insufficient AP capabilities” and that’s not necessarily because they are lacking in talent, but also because of insufficient manpower.

Samsung has been trying to make its Exynos chips stand out from others and be on par with the premium offerings from Apple and Qualcomm. In line with that, the company switched from its Mongoose cores to ARM’s design, and the newly launched Exynos 2200 features GPU made in collaboration with AMD.

Tata’s new Curvv design will deliver EVs with up to 500km range

India’s leading electric vehicles manufacturer Tata Motors has unveiled its new Curvv design to help it produce longer-range EVs. The company plans to deploy this new platform and the first EVs will be out by 2024 with bigger batteries and range up to 500km.

Tata Motors has seen a surge in the number of electric vehicles it has sold in India in the last two years and it is the leading local manufacturer of EVs in the subcontinent. The gradual growth in demand has been fueled by an incentive regime for manufacturers that cut across the central and regional governments. However, despite the incentives, EVs currently account for about 1% of vehicle sales in India, due mainly to their cost and lack of sufficient EV infrastructure.

The Curvv design will see Tata Motors manufacturing cars with bigger batteries and more efficient and shorter charging times for the batteries. The budding Indian EV market is still grappling with the high prices of EVs together with a dearth of charging infrastructure in several parts of the country. The new design will be based on a new architecture for electric models.

Tata Motors has made a huge investment in EV technology to deliver clean cars to the Indian market. It plans to raise more than $2 billion in equity funding focused on its EV unit research and development efforts. It has also had to grapple with the rising cost of battery cells and other components of EVs.

Renders of the Garmin Vivosmart 5 with a larger non-color touchscreen leak

The renders of Garmin’s next big smart wearable have leaked and it will come with a non-color touchscreen among other features. This year has seen much activity from Garmin as it seeks to rise in the pecking order of leading smartwatch brands like Apple and Samsung. Some of the Garmin 2022 offerings are innovative timepieces on their own but the company is not resting on its oars. Garmin is preparing to launch the Vivosmart 5 which could be one of the best fitness trackers in the market. New details relating to the Vivosmart 5 have leaked and the smart wearable could come well-kitted in its segment.

The Vivosmart 5 is the successor to the Vivosmart 4 which was launched in 2018. The authoritative leak is coming from Roland Quandt and indicates an improved display with a non-color touchscreen. The new screen is about 66% larger than that of the Vivosmart 4. This means that the user can easily read all health and fitness data and notifications without hassles. There are however no observed major improvements in terms of the sensors and fitness tracking options.

The Vivosmart 5 is rumored to have seven-day battery life and it offers an excellent option to monitor a wide variety of health and fitness activities. Multiple sports modes, GPS, and several sensors assure excellent monitoring of body functions. There are no indications yet on the pricing of the Garmin Vivosmart 5 but it could be priced lower than the Fitbit Charge 5 which is a leader in that segment. We expect some official confirmation or rebuttal of the claims relating to the Vivosmart 5.
