Zomato’s 10 minutes food delivery service to start soon

Zomato is aiming to deliver food to its customers in 10 minutes. This new model of instant delivery will be first tested in Gurugram from April.

Deepinder Goyal, Co-founder, Zomato said in a blog post, “After becoming a frequent customer of Blinkit (backed by Zomato), I started feeling that the 30-minute average delivery time by Zomato is too slow, and will soon have to become obsolete.

The company announced “Zomato instant” which will guarantee 10 minute delivery of 20-30 bestseller dishes from restaurants around your area. The delivery system will work by relying on a dense network of finishing stations (delivery hubs). The model follows in the footsteps of the dark store model implemented by quick commerce startups such as Zepto, Blinkit, and even Swiggy.

Each finishing station will have approximately 20-30 dishes based on the demand and preferences of customers in the area. Zomato will be using the existing data of 1.35 billion orders to help figure out the bestseller dishes in a particular area. Zomato will use sophisticated dish-level demand prediction algorithms and in-station robotics at each warehouse to ensure quick deliveries.

Goyal said that “The fulfillment of our quick delivery promise relies on a dense finishing stations’ network, which is located in close proximity to high-demand customer neighborhoods. Sophisticated dish-level demand prediction algorithms and future-ready in-station robotics are employed to ensure that your food is sterile, fresh, and hot at the time it is picked by the delivery partner.”

On the question of safety of its delivery partners, Deepinder Goyal said, “That Zomato would not compromise the safety of delivery partners, and partners won’t be pressurized to fulfill Zomato’s 10-minute delivery promise.”

Goyal also added, “Before we even talk about this, we will start with a clarification – to fulfill our quick delivery promise, we do not put any pressure on delivery partners to deliver food faster. Nor do we penalize delivery partners for late deliveries. The delivery partners are not informed of the promised time of delivery. Time optimization does not happen on the road, and does not put any lives at risk.”

This new delivery system will be a revolutionary change and would reduce the price for the customers by almost 50 percent.

OPPO unveils 3D ray tracing wallpapers for the Find X5 Pro

OPPO showcased ray tracing on its phones last year. But aside from a few demos available on the Play Store to test the rendering technique, ray tracing has remained largely unutilized — at least until now.

Yesterday, at the Game Developers Conference 2022 (GDC), OPPO unveiled the industry’s first ray tracing application for smartphones in the form of the “ColorOS Ray Tracing 3D Wallpaper.” Visitors at the event got to check out the wallpapers on the OPPO Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition.

Ray tracing is a graphics rendering technology that simulates the behavior of light as it would in the real world, allowing for more vivid and life-like virtual objects. OPPO first started developing its own ray tracing solution early in 2018. For the 3D live wallpaper, the brand adopted a hybrid architecture and dedicated hardware cores on the Find X5 Pro, putting the super-powerful Dimensity 9000 chip under the hood to good use.

OPPO says that the 3D ray tracing wallpaper will serve as a starting point for using the tech to explore future applications.

The ColorOS Ray Tracing 3D Wallpapers are also highly interactive, allowing a series of hand gestures such as rotation, taps, and waves to demonstrate animations. They’ll be presented to users of the Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition as an APK later this year, as well as to developers in an SDK package.

Samsung rumored to launch a MediaTek Dimensity 9000-powered smartphone

More Samsung Galaxy-branded smartphones now use MediaTek chipsets than ever before. However, these chips are either entry-level or mid-range models. This is going to change soon as a rumor now says that the South Korean electronics giant is gearing up to launch a handset powered by MediaTek’s latest flagship mobile SoC.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE Graphite White
Samsung Galaxy S21 FE

According to a Chinese tipster on Weibo (via SamMobile), Samsung is working on a smartphone powered by MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC. This phone will be backed by a 4,500mAh battery.

He does not know the market name of the device. But he does say that the handset could be either Galaxy A53 Pro or Galaxy S22 FE. The former sounds unbelievable as there would be a huge performance between the Pro and the vanilla model. But the latter could be a possibility.

Also, it is worth noting that usually Samsung experiments with new features on its Galaxy A series. Hence, this phone could be some high-end Galaxy A lineup model instead of Galaxy S22 FE.

That said, If this rumor is true, then we are looking forward to learning more about the Dimensity 9000-powered Samsung Galaxy smartphone in the coming days. But ahead of that, the company will be debuting its first Dimesnity 900 phone called Galaxy M53 5G on March 27.

Xiaomi files patent for improved side-mounted fingerprint with greater surface area

Xiaomi Mobile Software has acquired a utility model patent for an improved version of the side-mounted fingerprint sensor that will cover the frame and angular areas of the phone (via IT Home).

Side-mounted fingerprint scanners are typically limited to the power button of devices, which are usually quite tiny. Compared to rear-mounted fingerprints, the surface is area is significantly smaller, meaning accuracy may be reduced and chances of misreads are higher.

xiaomi side mounted fingerprint patent

The patented fingerprint tech looks to be aiming at addressing this shortcoming by extending the sensor’s width, thereby improving efficiency. A smaller surface area also meant the sensor only captured a small portion of the finger during authentication, increasing the chances of false positives. This too should get better once the patent turns into reality.

The need for such a solution has become greater as phones turn slimmer each year, leaving less and less space on the edge. One can argue that OEMs could simply switch to the under-display fingerprints instead, but the tech is generally much more expensive and is thus not a viable enough option for cheaper offerings.

Or the trusty rear fingerprint scanner could simply be resurrected. But that unfortunately doesn’t seem to be an option anymore as smartphone OEMs have silently declared it out of date.

Sony PlayStation 5 to go on pre-orders again on March 24 in India

The Sony PlayStation 5 launched back in November 2020, however, it has been difficult to grab one even in 2022. This is largely due to the ongoing global chip shortage resulting in limited production. And what little stock is made available for sale is usually bought up by scalpers who in turn resell the console at huge markups.

Sony PlayStation 5

However, you do not need to pay these outrageous prices as the PlayStation 5 is getting a restock in India where it will be available to purchase on MRP. The console will be back in stock in the country on March 24th.

OnePlus warns of a couple of bugs too here, although they’re UI-related and shouldn’t be too big a cause of bother. The clock widget displays a bit bigger than it should and the Phone app may be replaced by Contacts in the dock following the update.

The builds are currently only rolling out in the OBT (open beta test) branch as part of a staged rollout but they should be released in the stable branch too, soon enough.

While the OnePlus 8T and the OnePlus 8 series have bagged OxygenOS 12 in India and North America both, the OnePlus 9R is only getting the same in India. OnePlus says the builds for Europe will take a while since it requires “additional validation steps.”

Apple accused of holding an illegal monopoly on heart rate apps for Apple Watch

Earlier this week, a federal judge in the US said that Apple is facing a claim that states that it is illegally holding a monopoly over its heart rate monitoring apps on its Apple Watch in the United States market.

According to a Reuters report, US District Judge Jeffrey White stated that AliveCor Inc has claimed that it can prove that the Cupertino based giant has violated federal antitrust law. As per the claim, the iPhone maker allegedly has “complete control” on the market over similar apps. For those unaware, AliveCor Inc is behind the SmartRythm app that alerts the users to irregular heartbeats.

The judge added that “AliveCor alleges that Apple made changes to the heart rate algorithm that made it effectively impossible for third parties to inform a user when to take an ECG. Plaintiff’s allegations plausibly establish that Apple’s conduct was anticompetitive.” At the same time, Judge White also dismissed a separate claim for AliveCor, which claimed that Apple maintained an illegal monopoly over its ECG enabled smartwatches. Unfortunately, Apple has yet to provide any comments regarding this matter. Although, this isn’t the first time AliveCor has filed a complaint against the brand.

Back in 2020, the company had accused Apple for infringing on its patents based on its ECG features. In 2021, it also claimed that AliveCor was accused of changing the heart rate algorithm, which gave its proprietary system an “unfair competitive edge” over its competitors or possibly even putting “countless AliveCor users’ lives in danger” since they rely on their systems to offer them alerts. However, the American brand had countered this claim by saying that it was an “uncontroversial proposition that product improvement by itself” and did not violate the federal Sherman antitrust law.
