iPhone SE Plus to debut in 2022, iPhone SE 3 arrives 2023: Report

Back in October 2021, rumors surfaced that Apple had postponed the iPhone SE 3 and would instead release the iPhone SE Plus in 2022. Now, DSCC analyst Ross Young who initially broke the news in October is back with more details regarding the upcoming iPhone SE models.

iPhone SE 2020

The iPhone SE series is a line of affordable small-screen iPhones that was first introduced in 2016. The second phone in the series didn’t launch till 2020 and a successor is expected to arrive in 2022.

According to the latest tweet by DSCC analyst Ross Young the next iPhone SE model will indeed be called the iPhone SE Plus. The SE Plus will be the first device in the SE lineup to offer 5G support and is expected to house a 4.7-inch  LCD display. The device is also expected to retain the same design with thick top and bottom bezzles and have a Touch ID button.

The iPhone SE Plus is expected to debut in the next few months with the A15 Bionic chip, improved rear camera sensor, and 5G support.

Ross Young also states that the iPhone SE 3 might launch in 2023 rather than the previously predicted 2024 timeline and will have a 5.7-inch display.

Image via TenTechReview

Going by recent CAD renders, the iPhone SE 3 will retain the same rear design and have the same dimensions as the current iPhone SE. However, on the front, the device will offer a bigger screen by getting rid of the massive forehead chin, and touch ID button found in current-gen SE models. The SE 3 is also expected to house the A15 Bionic chipset and support 5G bands.

OnePlus announces end of software support for the OnePlus 6 and 6T

OnePlus has finally pulled the plug in the form of software support for two of its older models, the OnePlus 6 and the OnePlus 6T. The move comes after the upgrade of some newer models in July last year when it released its Updated Software Maintenance Schedule. The schedule promised three major Android upgrades and four years of security upgrades for flagship devices in the OnePlus lineup. However, the new schedule did not affect some older models which were primed for two major OS upgrades and three years of security updates, like the OnePlus 7 series.

OnePlus
OnePlus’ latest flagship – OnePlus 10 Pro

Security updates were last provided for the OnePlus 6 and 6T in November 2021that featured the Android Security patches for November 2021. The November 2021 update seems to have been the final update for the devices, as OnePlus has now confirmed. This marks the end of official software support for the two devices. The two models have enjoyed three major updates and more than three years of software updates, with tens of Closed and Open Beta builds, and the company feels that should be sufficient for the model.OnePlus 6

The implication of the discontinuation of official software support for the two models should not be seen as the end of the two devices. There is a strong community of third-party developers that will provide the needed support for the devices. That way, a couple of years or more could be gotten from the devices, rather than throwing them off.

India’s first electric cruiser motorcycle Mazout e-bike with a range of 350 km unveiled

India is in the midst of a revolution in transiting from combustion-powered two-wheelers to electric motorcycles and other two-wheel electric vehicles. There are several incentives both within the Federal and regional structure of the country that is at the heart of the rapid development in the segment. A lot of traditional automakers have also delved into the production of electric vehicles, while the electric two-wheeler industry’s growth is being propelled by some strong performances by TVS, Okinawa, Hero, Ola, and a host of other manufacturers. Mazout Electric is priming itself to be a highly successful startup in the Indian electric motorcycle industry. The company has now developed an electric cruiser motorcycle that could ride for 350 km on a single charge, according to the company. The bike has a top speed of 120km/h.Mazout Electric Bike

The Mazout electric cruiser motorcycle was actually developed by a team of engineering students at Delhi Technical University. A YouTube video that showcased the electric cruiser motorcycle provides some details about the technical and hardware specifications of the model, which is their second prototype. The students are the owners of the Mazout Electric startup and are also working on the software part of the electric cruiser motorcycle. The model, when unveiled to the Indian market, could mark a significant improvement on the range of current electric motorcycles. In fact, the Indian market lacks the presence of an electric cruiser motorcycle and the Mazout could change the narrative.

The design concept for the Mazout EV is based on the conventional cruiser motorbikes. The model will have a 25kWh battery pack to deliver the specified driving range. It remains to be seen, however, how the company evolves the Mazout electric cruiser motorcycle until it becomes a commercially sold product. The pricing component and overall features in the Mazout could determine the reception it receives in the market.

Netflix is hiking its prices in the US after prices went south in India last month

Video streaming service Netflix is increasing its prices in the United States amidst increasing competition in the field. This is coming barely a month after Netflix reduced prices in its India operations. Netflix remains the dominant force in the highly competitive video streaming market and the pandemic had seen a surge in demand for streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, Disney Plus, among others. The marginal increase in the various paid plans is an indication of a growing trend over the years.Netflix Logo

Specifically, a $1 increase means that subscribers in the US will pay $9.99 for the basic plan, while the HD plan chalked up an additional $1.50 at the new price of $15.49. The 4K plan which is the premium Netflix offering added $2 to its current price of $19.99. For existing subscribers, there is a period of grace within which they will be reminded of the new rates and subsequently charged. Netflix says it will send emails to existing subscribers when it is 30 days to the new measure. Netflix Canada is also affected by the new price regime.

On the other hand, Netflix India had seen a decline in its prices across all packages. The reductions from the basic to the premium package were between Rs. 50 (~$1) and Rs. 200 (~$3). The new prices became effective on December 14 and was seen as a promo offer for the New Year. Netflix monthly fees are however slightly higher than that of its competitors in the market like Amazon Prime and Disney+Hotstar.

Safari bug lets nefarious sites scoop your browsing history and Google account info

A bug in Safari found by security company FingerprintJS (via 9to5Mac) can let any website track your browsing history and even some information pertaining to the logged-in Google account.

It is present in Safari’s IndexedDB implementation on Mac and iOS and lets websites see names of databases for any domain and not just its own. IndexedDB is a Javascript API that according to the report holds “a significant amount of data.”

apple safari featured

These database names can then be used to extract identifying information from a lookup table. Google services, for example, store an IndexedDB instance for each of your logged-in accounts. This can be accessed by malicious sites to unearth other information about you, such as your Google account profile picture.

While the proof-of-concept demo by FingerprintJS only keeps an index of about 30 sites, there’s quite a chance of the exploit being applied to a much larger set. Almost every site that uses the IndexedDB JavaScript API could be vulnerable to such data scraping.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much that can be done from the user’s end to fix the Safari bug other than blocking Javascript completely on untrusted sites, which isn’t too feasible as doing so will likely be breaking stuff on web pages.

The only proper fix can obviously be applied by Apple alone. Browsers like Chrome only let websites access databases on IndexedDB created by the same domain name as their own, and it’s time Apple heads the same way with Safari.

FingerprintJS says that it has already reported the bug to Apple on November 28 but a fix still remains to be seen.

Sony PlayStation 5 may soon be able to run older PlayStation 3 games

Recently, there have been PlayStation 3 games that have surfaced on the PlayStation 5‘s store. This has raised rumors of Sony possibly planning on rolling out backwards compatibility for older games for the current gen consoles.

Sony PlayStation 5

According to a VideoGamesChronicles report, certain PS3 games have been spotted on the PS5’s store. Usually, searching up PlayStation 3 games on the PlayStation’s 5 store would direct users to their listings towards the PlayStation Now. However, looking up Dead or Alive 5 brings users to a 7.99 Pound listing. Similarly, users have taken to social media after spotting other similar listings.

This includes the PS3’s Bejeweled and Prince of Persia series’ The Forgotten Sands and The Two Thrones. All of these games are listed with their respective price tag. However, users are not able to purchase these PS3 titles from the PS5 store at the moment. In other words, there is still a possibility that the listings might be an error. But, Dead or Alive 5 for PS3 isn’t available on PlayStation Now in Europe.

Sony

Notably, the listings also arrive after a Sony patent had recently surfaced which is titled “backward compatibility through the use of spoof clock and fine grain frequency control.” This means that the Japanese tech giant is basically working on a solution to allow users to play older games on the latest PS5 game console. Keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed report so take it with a pinch of salt for now.

Apple iPad Air 5 may launch later this year, with A15 chip & Center Stage selfie tech

A new report has suggested that Apple might be planning on launching the new iPad Air 5 later this year. The tablet will feature the latest A15 Bionic chipset and will even feature an enhanced selfie camera with Center Stage technology.

Apple
2020 iPad Air

According to Mac Otakara’s sources (Via NotebookCheck), the Cupertino based giant is gearing up for an iPad Air 5 launch later this year. While its chipset and other features are in line with current gen standards, its display and design will reportedly remain the same as the 2020 iPad Air. Furthermore, this information is also similar to earlier reports that hinted at Apple hosting a virtual event sometime between March and April 2022.

During this conference, the brand is expected to announce its latest lineup of products, which would likely include the highly anticipated iPhone SE 3, which unlike the iPad Air, is expected to arrive with a major overhaul. The model is now expected to feature a notched LCD screen, similar to the one found on the iPhone XR.

Apple

On the other hand, the iPad Air 5 won’t feature any notable changes in design. However, the addition of the A15 Bionic chipset means that the upcoming mid range iPad will feature 5G support. In other words, it might be a worthy upgrade for those looking for an iPad upgrade. With the current gen iPad Air models retailing for around 600 US Dollars, we can expect the new iPad Air 5 to also arrive with a similar price tag as well.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE gets January security patch as its first-ever update

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE was finally announced earlier this month at CES 2022 after months of delays, defying various rumors of its cancelation. As customary for Samsung, the device quickly received the January security patch not long after in some Asian markets. And now, it has begun to get the same in the US too, as its very first update.

The update is for the unlocked variant of the Galaxy S21 FE and carries firmware version G990U1UEU2BUL8 (via SamMobile). It doesn’t bring anything new to the table other than the January security patch, but that’s unsurprising considering the device already runs the latest from Samsung out of the box—One UI 4 based on Android 12.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE White

Among the various vulnerabilities and security holes patched by the January patch is the bug that allowed Microsoft Teams to break emergency calling. It also fixes a loophole in Android 12 that allowed third-party applications with shell access to change the colors and dimensions of certain system elements.

The update is rolling out to almost all carrier networks including AT&T, Bluegrass Cellular, Comcast, C-Spire, Tracfone, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Xfinity Mobile.

It is one of the dozens that the device will be getting, thanks to the promised three years of Android OS upgrades and four years of security patch updates.

If you reside in the US and wish to update your Galaxy S21 FE to the latest build, then you can do so by heading over to Settings > Software update and tapping on “Download and install” if anything shows up.

Xiaomi may launch a clamshell folding phone, with an aggressive price tag

Earlier today (17th January 2022), a known tipster on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging website) revealed interesting information regarding the next generation of foldable smartphone from Xiaomi. Apparently, the company has already started work on this device, which will feature a clamshell folding design.

Xiaomi

Back in 2021, the Chinese tech giant had released its first ever foldable handset, which was the MIX Fold. It featured a vertical hinge, which meant that it folded horizontally similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3. Furthermore, it launched with a price tag of 9,999 Yuan (roughly 1,575 US Dollars), which almost as expensive as its Samsung counterpart. Although, the device was still one of the more affordable foldable devices in the market.

Now, known tipster Digital Chat Station has revealed that the company is working on a new foldable phone, which features a vertically folding horizontal display. However, its most notable aspect would be its price, as the tipster claims that the company might launch it closer to a mainstream flagship price. This would be a big deal considering, the cheapest foldable phone still costs over 1,000 US Dollars. We had previously even reported on a Xiaomi patent that showcased such a vertically folding phone.

Xiaomi

In the social media post, the tipster also revealed one key details regarding the upcoming Xiaomi foldable phone. Reportedly, this device will feature a FHD+ resolution and 120Hz high refresh rate. Under the hood, the phone will apparently houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen series processor. Keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed report so take it with a pinch of salt for now and stay tuned for more updates.
