When the company unveiled ColorOS 12 based on Android 12, it revealed that the latest version of its mobile software is compatible with different form factors, including tablets and foldables, thanks to a new responsive device. Today, one of the top executives of the firm officially confirmed the arrival of tablets and multi-form smartphone products.

At a partner summit, Liu Bo, Vice President of OPPO and President of OPPO China, disclosed the company’s plans for high-end products, IoT products, and eCommerce strategy.

According to a report by Sina Technology, the OPPO exec confirmed that his company will launch its first tablet in the first half of 2022. In case you missed it, vivo is also set to release its first tablet around the same time.

The exec also revealed that OPPO will be also debuting ‘multi-form smartphone products’. In other words, the firm will be launching foldables and similar unique devices. But unfortunately, he did not give a specific timeline for their release.

Last year, the tech giant showcased a rollable concept smartphone called OPPO X 2021. It even announced a tri-fold concept smartphone design in partnership with a Japanese design firm called ‘nendo’. Hence, we can expect a commercial version of these products.

Talking about high-end devices (¥4,000+), Liu Bo disclosed that OPPO is currently the third-largest premium Android OEM in the overall Chinese smartphone market and the second-largest in the Chinese offline smartphone market. He also said that the awareness of the OPPO Find X3 series has increased from 46% to 60%.

Further, with OnePlus becoming a sub-brand of OPPO after the merger, the company’s eCommerce business is also growing strong with a presence on popular retailers like JD, Suning, GOME, Pinduoduo, and others, in addition to its own Huantai Mall.

Lastly, OPPO will continue to release new products across different IoT product categories like truly wireless earphones, fitness trackers, smartwatches, smart TVs, and more.

Russia threatens to ban YouTube, calls for “zero tolerance”

Earlier this week, Russia threatened to ban YouTube as the popular video sharing platform removed the Russian state backed broadcaster RT’s German language channels from its website. This urged the Kremlin to call for ‘zero tolerance’ towards the online platform.

Russia

According to a Reuters report, the online video streaming platform, owned by Alphabet Inc, has deleted the state backed broadcaster RT’s channels on Tuesday. YouTube stated that the channel was removed from its website as it breached its COVID-19 misinformation policy. Furthermore, the company also added that it would block all anti vaccine content from its platform as well. This marks its expansion outside of just Coronavirus, and includes content that alleges vaccines cause chronic health effects or other form of misinformation regarding the vaccines.

On the other hand, Russia stated that it was considering retaliating against German media and also accused YouTube of “unprecedented information aggression” over the deletion of the RT channels. This also marks the spark of new friction between the Russian government and a tech giant. Russian state communications regulator Roskomnadzor stated that it has written to Google and demanded that YouTube should lift the restrictions on RT channels.

Russia

If the company fails to comply, then the government could partially or fully restrict access to YouTube in the region. As of right now, Google has declined to comment on the matter. Additionally, the government could also impose other measures to ensure YouTube complies with its laws, as per Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. He further added that “There should certainly be zero tolerance for this kind of breaking of the law.”

Some iPhone 13 users report intermittent touch issues, older models affected too following iOS 15

Several Apple iPhone 13 series users are reporting intermittent touch screen issues on iOS 15 wherein their device doesn’t respond to touch inputs on certain parts of the display or even the entire panel. Users say that the only way to temporarily work around the problem when it strikes is by rebooting the device.

Posts on Reddit, Twitter, and Apple forums related to the issue all more or less say the same thing – the iPhone 13 touch sensitivity is screwed, requiring repeated taps for touches to register (via: MacRumors).

The problem seems to vary from user to user. While some say that it occurs with all apps and the entire screen, others have observed that certain sections of the touch – particularly the upper corners – are more affected. The entire lineup seems to be plagued by touch screen issues, or at least the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The cause is unknown at the moment, although isolated cases could be narrowed down to possible hardware malfunctions. However, a few reports following the iOS 15 update on older models point towards the possibility of something being wrong with the update itself.

After all, bugs on iOS 15 aren’t exactly a rare occurrence. MacRumors reports that the update has been tormented with problems, including bugs related to the ‌iPhone 13‌ and the Apple Watch, device storage, Apple Music, and widgets, on top of possible security vulnerabilities. Apple has promised to release an update to address some of the problems affecting iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 devices though.

The fixes may be brought along with an iOS 15.0.1 update, but there are chances that Apple may instead directly release iOS 15.1 when it clears beta testing next month.

That said, it is worth mentioning here that YouTuber and Apple beta specialist Zollotech in his latest video observed that the iPhone 13 touch issues seem to have been fixed on iOS 15.1 beta, according to his limited time with the build. Those affected can thus take a sigh of relief.

iPhone 14 Mini to get replaced by a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, Four models incoming

Recently, there were rumours that the iPhone 14 series will have a complete redesign and it may have four iPhone models. Followed by this news, there was a piece of information that revealed that last year’s iPhone 12 mini didn’t have great sales in comparison to the iPhone 12 Pro Max model. It purported tipsters to suggest that Apple may ditch the mini in favour of a large-sized model. Well, now, the notorious Apple leaker Jon Prosser reveals the same information in addition to some other specs of the iPhone 14 series.

According to Prosser, next year, the iPhone 14 series will have four different models and all of them will have a redesign. Prosser had already shared creative renders of the redesigned 14 series ahead of iPhone 13 launch. The leaker is now back to suggest that it is indeed happening and the Mini is getting away.

iPhone 14

Apple is touted to bring the iPhone 14 Max model with a large 6.7-inch display. For starters, it will be the same screen size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max model. The other two phones in the middle would be the base model iPhone 14 with a 6.1-inch screen and a Pro model with again the same screen size. Hence, there won’t be any Mini model.

The major reason for killing the Mini would be the inferior sales of the iPhone 12 Mini. In fact, a report revealed that iPhone 12 Pro Max outsold the other models, thanks to the larger screen size. That said, Apple may take the reports into consideration and offer a large-sized iPhone in the non-Pro series.

Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max supports up to 27W charging speed

Before the Apple iPhone 13 series smartphones were launched, it was reported that this time, the technology giant will be adding support for faster charging. While the company has not advertised this, a test conducted by ChargerLAB reveals that the iPhone 13 Pro Max is capable of charging at up to 27W speed.

As per the test, the Apple iPhone 13 Pro, when charged with a 30W or higher USB-C power adopter, can be charged at up to 27W speed. For comparison, the last year’s iPhone 12 Pro Max has a top charging speed of 21W to 22W.

Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max Display

However, it’s noteworthy that the iPhone 13 Pro Max doesn’t sustain peak 27W power for the entire charging cycle due to heat considerations but the interesting part is that the device is able to get charged at a slightly faster rate than its predecessor.

The charging test was conducted on the Pro Max model only so we are not sure if the iPhone 13 Pro also supports up to 27W charging. Whatever be the case, it practically doesn’t make any significant difference.

Apple is no longer offering a charger in the retail box when a customer purchases the new iPhone but the company is selling a 30W USB-C power adapter at a price of $49 for anyone who doesn’t have an existing USB-C charger.

The 27W charging speed for the latest iPhone series is still no match when compared to the 65W fast charging support offered by several Android smartphone manufacturers. Some companies are also offering 120W charging and the 200W charging, which has already been unveiled by a couple of brands, is set to debut commercially next year.

iPad mini 6 “Jelly Scrolling” issue investigation by iFixit corroborates Apple’s argument

Known for its teardown of smartphones, iFixit now brought iPad mini 6 under their radar and tore the life out of it to find out what’s actually inside it. Other than getting to know more about the processor, battery, Type-C connector, the most awaited bit, from the eyes of the affected lot, is iFixit’s take on the ongoing “Jelly Scrolling” fuss. While the teardown experts suggest this effect is normal, the wobbling is surprisingly much more noticeable on iPad mini 6.

ipad-mini-6-featured

iFixit notes that it is a natural behavior for LCD and OLED displays to exhibit similar display wobbling but it also appears that the jelly scrolling on iPad mini 6 isn’t as minimal as others and is indeed a pain. However, it still remains unclear as to what could be the reason behind its occurrence but it is highly likely to be because of a specific board placement. This means, that there’s no imminent solution to this problem and iPad mini 6 users will have to continue facing the jelly scrolling issue.

The short video of iPad mini 6 disassemblies by iFixit suggests that A15 SoC used is downclocked a bit when compared to what it is in the iPhone 13 series. It is easier to remove the USB-C connector on the new iPad mini when compared to the previous generations. The battery still being adhered to the chassis indicates that early rumors pointing towards Apple mulling a similar move with the device’s battery were void.

iFixit gives the device a 3 out of 10 and claims that the new device is slightly more repairable. The preliminary video doesn’t dive into much detail but a full teardown can be expected in the coming days.

Huawei Mate V foldable reported to be scheduled for a Q4 release

Huawei was one of the first manufacturers to announce a commercially available foldable smartphone. Earlier this year, it launched its third foldable phone, the Mate X2, which dropped the outward folding design of its predecessors for the inward folding design made popular by the Galaxy Fold series. A new leak says Huawei has another foldable set for a launch next quarter and it will launch as the Mate V.

If all was well in Huawei-land, the Mate 50 series should be the flagship launching next quarter but that won’t be happening as a result of its struggling mobile phone business which has taken a big hit due to the U.S. ban. Its P-series flagship for this year which should have been unveiled in the first quarter of the year wasn’t announced until late July. Even the base model Huawei P50 just became available for purchase this month.

While the Mate 50 series won’t launch this year, the reliable leaker who goes by @RODENT950 on Twitter has revealed that the manufacturer will announce a new foldable smartphone called the Mate V next quarter. The leaker had initially teased the arrival of the foldable about a month ago.

The specifications of the Mate V as well as details of its design are currently unknown. Earlier, it was reported that Huawei is working on a foldable phone with a clamshell design similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3. However, there is no link connecting this clamshell foldable to the Mate V expected to launch next quarter. Time will tell if they are one and the same or two different devices. Regardless, one more foldable phone from Huawei this year is good news, not only for Huawei fans but for the foldable smartphone market at large.

Both of these devices come with amazing aesthetics and top-notch performance in every department. Through this comparison, we hope to clear your ideas about the differences between their specifications.

Design

As already mentioned, OPPO Find X3 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max come with stunning designs. I personally like the aesthetics of the OPPO Find X3 Pro more because of its rear design full of curves and with no interruptions. But on the other hand, there is to admit that iPhone 13 Pro Max has a better build quality. Instead of simple glass, its rear side is made of Ceramic Shield coating and the frame is made of stainless steel. Further, the iPhone 13 Pro Max offers more water resistance since it can withstand up to 6 meters of depth with its IP68 certification. It has that big notch, but it is a thinner phone.

Display

OPPO Find X3 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are equipped with astonishing displays, but the iPhone 13 Pro Max looks like the best one due to better image quality. The OPPO Find X3 Pro has all the most advanced technologies: LTPO for adaptive refresh rate up to 120 Hz, HDR10+ certification, BT.2020 standard, one billion colors, and even a Quad HD+ resolution. The iPhone 13 Pro Max offers HDR10 and a 120 Hz refresh rate, as well as Dolby Vision support. Despite it may look inferior on the paper, its image quality is so amazing that DisplayMate gave it the Best Display Award. iPhone 13 Pro Max has an OLED panel but, unlike the Find X3 Pro, it does not have a fingerprint reader: it relies on 3D facial recognition for authentication.

Specs & Software

Thanks to the iOS operating system which is optimized better and thanks to a superior processor (the Apple A15 Bionic built at 5 nm with a max frequency of 3.22 GHz), the iPhone 13 Pro Max is able to achieve better performance, even though it has only a half of the RAM of the Find X3 Pro by OPPO. However, both of these devices are flagships able to execute every task with blazing speeds and great stability, so you would not notice a big difference between them. Note that OPPO Find X3 Pro only comes with 256 GB of internal storage, while you can get up to 1 TB of native storage with the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Camera

Each of these handsets has its pro and cons when it comes to the cameras. The OPPO Find X3 Pro can achieve a better photo quality in various scenarios, such as ultrawide shots and macro, thanks to its microscope sensor sporting 60x magnification (30x optical magnification). The iPhone 13 Pro Max is able to record better videos and amazing normal photos. Further, it has a 3D LiDAR scanner for AR appliances.

Battery

The battery of the iPhone 13 Pro Max is slightly smaller if compared to the OPPO Find X3 Pro, but it still provides a longer battery life due to the better optimization of iOS. The Find X3 Pro wins when it comes to charging speeds as it features 65W fast wired charging and 30W wireless charging. But the Apple flagship has MagSafe which allows for a more comfortable wireless charging experience and it also allows to connect interesting external accessories such as wallets and battery packs.

Price

In the European market, the iPhone 13 Pro Max carries a starting price of about €1200, while it costs $1100 in the U.S. The OPPO Find X3 Pro was launched in Europe with a listing price of €1149/$1130, but currently, it is easy to find it for less than €1000 and sometimes even for less than €900/$1044. It is not possible to choose a winner of this comparison that is valid for everyone, but overall, the iPhone 13 Pro Max has some more pros, such as its build quality, and battery life.

Xiaomi launches the MIJIA Smart Rechargeable Desk Lamp & MIJIA Electric Kettle 2

Xiaomi has launched a new desk lamp dubbed MIJIA Smart Rechargeable Desk Lamp in China. The smart lamp comes with several features that allow for eye comfort and seamless usage. It is priced at 129 yuan (~$20) which is pretty affordable. MIJIA Smart Rechargeable Desk Lamp The MIJIA Smart Rechargeable Desk Lamp is equipped with a built-in 2000mAh high-capacity lithium battery that can last for 120 hours with 100% brightness touted to last for more than 4 hours. Also, 10% brightness can last for more than 40 hours while 1% brightness turns into a night light, and it can stay on for up to 120 hours.

The product retains the same settings of three-speed color temperature and brightness levels used on the previous generation desk lamp. However, on this model, you can customize the color temperature and brightness via the MIJIA app according to your personal preference. There is also a preset scene mode.

The device is equipped with 12 built-in 0.25W LED modules with a total rated power of only 5W. The color temperature can be adjusted between 2700K-6000K, suitable for a variety of home scenes.

As a smart desk lamp, when the doorbell rings, the desk lamp flashes to notify the homeowner. When the bedside lamp is turned off at bedtime, it will automatically turn off the lights in other rooms. At night, when the smart body sensor detects movements, it will also help you automatically light up the night mode.

MIJIA Electric Kettle 2

Xiaomi also launched the MIJIA Electric Kettle 2 with an upgraded capacity but the price is still 99 yuan (~$15).

In terms of appearance, the new product adopts an open 7-shaped handle design, which shortens the distance from lowering the kettle to pressing the switch, making the operation more convenient. The handle adopts a rounded line design, which makes the hand feel more comfortable, and it saves effort to pour water.

Compared with the previous MIJIA Electric Kettle, the capacity of MIJIA Electric Kettle 2 is upgraded from 1.5L to 1.7L, which can boil 8 cups of water at a time. This can easily meet the drinking needs of the whole family without frequent boiling.MIJIA Electric Kettle 2

The new product adopts a double-layer structure inside and outside to form a middle insulation layer to prevent accidental burns. The inner tank is made of food contact-grade 304 stainless steel. It has an integrated structure, is corrosion-resistant, oxidation-resistant, and is more convenient to clean.

The MIJIA Electric Kettle 2 is equipped with a 1800W high-power energy-gathering heating chassis, which can shorten the boiling time of 1500W electric kettles by 2 minutes. The thick aluminum plate heating chassis is used to make the heat load more uniform and make the water fully boil.

In terms of safety, the electric kettle uses the British brand STRIX thermostat which allows the power supply to accurately trip and stop heating when the water reaches the boiling point. It also has four-fold power protection, including automatic power off when water is turned off, and automatic power-off when it is dry. There is also high-temperature fuse protection and an anti-shock design which ensures it is safe for use.

Amazon Smart Thermostat & the child-centered Amazon Glow video-chat device official

Amazon yesterday held an event where it revealed a deluge of smart home products. One of the smart home devices designed to take on the Nest is the Amazon Smart Thermostat. Just like the Nest, the smart thermostat will automatically adjust your indoor environment when it detects that you’re home and based on other learned preferences.Amazon Thermostat

Amazon has built up Alexa’s ability to act on “Hunches” over the last few years, and it appears the thermostat relies on a deep connection with the AI assistant’s smarts to understand what it should do and when.

Integrating smart features like Alexa routines and presence detection at its price means that it’s not only poised to undercut more expensive products like the $130 Nest or Ecobee’s $250 option. It’s even cheaper than value-priced smart thermostats like this Wyze thermostat that is generally available for about $80. And it may be even cheaper in some cases, as Amazon claims that “After applying utility-provider rebates, eligible customers can get Amazon Smart Thermostat for $10, and sometimes, for nothing at all.”

The company says it developed the new device in partnership with the makers of Honeywell Home smart thermostats and confirmed it’s ready to work with most existing 24V HVAC systems.Amazon Glow

The Amazon Smart Thermostat is priced at $59.99 and is already open for preorders in the US.

Amazon Glow video-chat device

Amazon also launched a video-chat device specifically designed for kids. The product dubbed Amazon Glow video-chat device beams computer images onto a table, where kids can interact with them.

The gadget features an 8-inch LCD display which allows the kids to clearly see their loved ones. The device can be paired with a smartphone or tablet which can then be used to remotely determine what the child views in terms of books, drawings, play puzzles, and more. Amazon Glow

Some of the resources available to users of the Glow products launched in partnership with Disney, Mattel, Sesame Street, and Nickelodeon for interactive books, puzzles, and all sorts of other items.

The device also comes with a privacy shutter to protect the kids. Also, kids can only call people that have been approved previously by their parents.
