A couple of months back, Vivo unveiled the Vivo Y21 smartphone in India. Today, the company has officially brought it to Kenya at an entry-level price. The major highlights of the smartphone are dual-rear cameras, Helio P35 SoC, and a 5,000mAh battery.
The Vivo Y21 is priced at 16,999 KsH(roughly $154) and comes in two colour options – Diamond Glow and Midnight Blue. The smartphone will be available for purchase across Kenya via authorised channels.
Vivo Y21 Specifications
The Vivo Y21 comes with a 6.51-inch water-drop notch display. It is an LCD panel with 1600 x 720-pixel resolution. The device has an 8MP front camera for selfies and a dual-camera system at the rear. It has a 13MP main sensor and a 2MP macro lens. The rear camera island also has an LED flash.
Under the hood, it comes powered by the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Interestingly, the RAM memory has an additional 1GB expansion option. There’s also a microSD card slot for storage expansion. The smartphone packs a 5,000mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. According to Vivo, it will go from 0% to 34% with just 30 minutes of charge.
The Vivo Y21 boots on Android 11 out of the box and has Vivo’s FunTouch OS 11.1 on top of it. It has a USB Type-C port at the bottom for charging and also features a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Amazon has unveiled its latest innovative home assistant robot on wheels, named Astro. The Amazon Astro will cost $1,000 and Amazon is offering an opportunity for potential buyers to request an invitation to buy it because it is a limited-version product.
The Amazon Astro bears a similar name to a futuristic pet dog in the Jetsons TV series of the 1960s. The Amazon Astro seems to be the culmination of different technological inputs from robotics, artificial intelligence, home monitoring, and cloud services. It seems to be Amazon’s most ambitious home system product so far. Amazon’s Astro may just signal the beginning of a vigorous stage of in-home product development for the ultimate home robot, capable of doing virtually everything that could be thought of.
It looks a bit futuristic that an ultimate home robot will become a reality but the development in this area is rapid. The Astro, according to Amazon is capable of a variety of activities that could be expected from a home robot. It can map the home, obey commands to go to specific rooms, has face recognition capabilities that enable it to deliver items to specific persons. Amazon’s Astro also offers the functionality in Alexa by providing tons of details and information from the weather, and can also be used for a video call. Amazon’s Astro will follow you wherever you go, thus keeping you in the frame all through the video call.
Amazon’s Astro can also provide safety and security cover in your home when you are not around. It can roam around the house to make sure nothing is amiss in the house. It can also deploy third-party apps and accessories to record key body functions like your blood pressure.
As pointed earlier, the Astro is possibly the first step in the evolution of the perfect home robot. There are several things it cannot do which are basic functionalities expected of what could be seen as the ultimate home robot. For a start, Astro does not have arms, cannot move on stairs, and has a whole lot of basic skills. We are sure that Astro would not be the last in-home robot from Amazon.

The Elite 3 earbuds are powered by 6mm drivers for a pretty standard audio output. The Elite 3 has Qualcomm aptX audio support, as well as a 4-microphone system. It offers 7 hours of battery life which is extended to about 28 hours with the charging case attached.
The Jabra Elite 7 Active features Jabra’s ShakeGrip technology, four microphones for an effective call experience, and adjustable ANC. There are two additional microphones for greater personalization.
The Jabra Elite 7 Pro is a more compact truly wireless earbuds. It has Jabra’s in-house MultiSensor Voice technology driven by a complex algorithm that combines with four microphones and a bone conduction sensor. The Jabra Elite Pro 7 has a smaller size (up to 16 percent smaller) than the Elite 75 earbuds. The adjustable ANC feature in the device means that users can customize the audio experience to suit their needs in line with the environment. Audio personalization is also possible with the Jabra MySound technology. The battery is up to 30 hours with the charging case. However, you can only get 8 hours when ANC is active and the charging case is not connected.
As per pricing, the Elite 2 is priced at Rs. 5,999 (~$82), the Elite 3 will cost Rs. 6,999 (~$95), while the Elite 7 Active is priced at Rs. 15,999 (~$217). The pick of the lot is the Elite 7 Pro and it will cost Rs. 18,999 (~$258).
The Elite 2 and Elite 3 earbuds will be available from October 1, while the Elite 7 Pro and Elite 7 Active will be available by the end of October 2021.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max finally went on sale with a similar design to its predecessor but several improvements in terms of specifications. It has a smaller notch, a bigger battery, a much better hardware department, and more. But is it even better than other Android top-tier flagships under every aspect? After comparing it to the most advanced Samsung flagship (the Galaxy S21 Ultra), it is time for Xiaomi to compete with Apple. Here is a comparison between the specifications of the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra.
Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra vs Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max
Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra
Apple iPhone 13 Max
DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHT
164.3 x 74.6 x 8.4 mm,
234 g
160.8 x 78.1 x 7.7 mm,
240 g
DISPLAY
6.81 inches, 1440 x 3200 pixels (Quad HD+), AMOLED
6.7 inches, 1284 x 2778p (Full HD+), Super Retina XDR OLED
The huge camera module of the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra does not make it very elegant. If you add that it comes with big dimensions, you will understand that it is definitely not the best phone to keep with you while you travel. The iPhone 13 Pro Max has that bigger notch, but its overall design is more stylish compared to its rival. Further, it comes with better water resistance: it has the IP68 certification which allows putting it underwater up to 6 meters deep without damages, while the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra can only withstand 1.5 meters of depth. The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is built with a ceramic back and an aluminum frame, while iPhone 13 Pro Max comes with a Ceramic Shield back and a stainless steel frame: its build quality is higher and it is also more compact.
Display
If we talk about the displays, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is more interesting. Besides an amazing AMOLED panel with one billion colors, 120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ certification, and Dolby Vision, it also comes with an additional mini display on the rear side which can be used instead of the main display and allows shooting selfies with the rear cameras. Both the phones are stunning when it comes to image quality, so whatever you choose, you will get a great display. Note that Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra has an in-display fingerprint reader, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max comes with 3D facial recognition instead of a fingerprint scanner.
Specs & Software
On the paper, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra looks more powerful as it comes with up to 12 GB of RAM, but the reality is that iPhone 13 Pro Max can achieve better performance due to its stronger Apple A15 Bionic chip and the better optimization of the iOS operating system. Despite it has just 6 GB of RAM, the iPhone 13 Pro Max can be faster and more powerful. Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra runs Android 11 out of the box and it will be among the first Xiaomi phones to get the Android 12 update, while iPhone 13 Pro Max runs iOS 15.
Camera
The camera department of the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is more complete and versatile than iPhone 13 Pro Max. Despite Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is able to record 8K videos, the iPhone 13 Pro Max actually records better videos in most of the conditions, but the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is way better when it comes to photo quality. It has a 50 MP main sensor with laser autofocus, a 48 MP periscope sensor with 5x optical zoom, and a 48 MP ultrawide camera against three inferior 12 MP sensors provided by the iPhone.
Despite Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra has a bigger 5000 mAh battery, the iPhone 13 Pro Max is able to provide a longer battery life on a single charge because it has better software optimization. On the other hand, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra has faster charging speeds thanks to a power of 65W for both wired charging and wireless charging.
Price
The original price of the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra for the European market is about €1200/$1400, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max starts from €119 in Europe and $1099 in the U.S. If you are searching for a clear winner of this comparison, you are in the wrong place. Each of these devices has its pro and cons: which one should you buy? It depends on your actual needs. Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra may be very useful for you with its dual display and a better camera to shoot photos, but the iPhone 13 Pro Max is all but an inferior device and it offers better build quality, as well as longer battery life, similar camera performance, and more.
Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra vs Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max: PRO and CONS
Smart wearables have grown amazingly in importance within the past couple of years. They continue to offer a fast-expanding array of functions and services that helps to sustain healthy living and a decent fitness regimen. The fall detection feature of some current models has proven to be the difference between life and death for quite a growing number of users of these devices.
Amazon is gradually making inroads into the wearables space with its latest offerings of several fitness devices. The company has announced a new fitness band to go with several health services it will be offering its clientele who buy any of the devices. The new Halo View will square off with some current fitness models and is priced at $79.99. The Amazon Halo View comes with one-year free membership of Amazon Halo to enjoy the full width of fitness services available with the Halo View.
Amazon is also launching the fitness service which will provide workout videos and a nutrition service called Halo Nutrition. Some of the new service offerings are not unique, as some established heavy hitters in the segment like Apple have similar services.
The Halo View has a color AMOLED display and offers an array of several sensors for measuring various body functions including heart rate, blood oxygen level, sleep tracking, skin temperature, but will not come with a microphone system to gather voice data. Three color variants are available for the Halo View: black, green, and purple, with a variety of additional bands available in different colors and textures. The Halo View also offers up to 7 days of battery life and fast charging capability.
The Halo View and the accompanying services will be available from next quarter until early 2022, and there is a token fee for the membership of the Amazon Halo Nutrition service.
Zepp Health (formerly known as Huami) has announced that it will unveil new products next month. The global launch event is expected to be for new smartwatches under the Amazfit GTR and Amazfit GTS line. While not yet confirmed, the new wearable should launch as the Amazfit GTR 3 and Amazfit GTS 3 respectively.
The announcement was made on Twitter by the Amazfit Global account and the tweet says the global event is scheduled for October 11, a day before the China launch that was reported earlier today.
Mark your calendar! You're not going to want to miss this. 😉At 5pm (GMT+1) on October 11, we invite you to join us for the Amazfit Global Launch Event! 🎦Witness a new era of smart health & get ready to Up Your Game. See you on the next level… #Amazfit#UpYourGame#NewArrivalpic.twitter.com/3TJSzuM44C
There is a lot of anticipation for the new Amazfit smartwatches as they are expected to run the new operating system unveiled in July. Called Zepp OS, the new operating system comes with lots of new features that will provide a better experience for users. The OS is not only light, coming in at just 55MB, a small fraction when compared to the current Amazfit OS or even Apple’s watchOS 8, but also brings an improvement in performance and battery life. The manufacturer also promises an increase of 190% in battery life with the new OS, and support for internet cloud service applications a.k.a. web apps among other upgrades.
In related news, we have spotted a new Amazfit Smartwatch at the FCC. The smartwatch, which has the model number A2040, was certified on September 23 and from one of the documents, we can tell it has a round display.
We were also spotted new features such as a different UI with new options in the menu. As shown in the image above, the menu appears to have been redesigned. There is now a menu option that reads “Card Package”, above it is ”Calendar” and there is also a “Tools” menu option. The Settings menu also has some new additions such as Apps which points at app support. The System sub-menu also has a new option tagged “Bind New Phone” along with the other familiar ones.
This is definitely a new UI that will appear on the upcoming smartwatches and we can’t wait to try it out.
Amazon today held an invite-only event where it unveiled a couple of products. The star product is undoubtedly the Echo SHow 15, Amazon’s largest smart display yet. The device carries a price tag of $249.99.
The Echo Show 15 just as the name implies, features a 15-inch display with a 1080p HD resolution. The design is also markedly different from those of the previous Echo Show models. It doesn’t include a bulky speaker attached to the back of the screen. Instead, it features a flat panel, making it possible to mount the display on a wall.
The Echo Show 15 is designed to be a shared hub like a notice board where family members can check upcoming calendar appointments, to-do lists, reminders and shopping lists, etc. Thus, it can be mounted in the kitchen, hallway, or living room.
Aside from the massive display and thin design, the Echo Show 15 features similar functions as the regular Echo Show such as playing music, beaming weather reports, video streaming, controlling smart home gadgets, and other tasks that can be activated via Alexa.
In addition, the large display allows the screen to display several important widgets permanently but they can be customized to suit the users’ preference. The screen also adds to the aesthetics of the home as it looks like a picture frame. Further, the display comes with a picture-in-picture feature, giving users access to view their security camera feed or video doorbell without obstructing what is being viewed previously. It also arrives with support for full HD resolution streaming from Netflix, Amazon’s Prime Video, Hulu, and others. Amazon also announced that TikTok and Sling TV support is coming to its entire line of smart displays.

Short video sharing platform TikTok has achieved another milestone in its meteoric rise within the past year. The platform has reached 1 billion users that use it every month for the past few months. The coronavirus pandemic that virtually shut the global space in 2020 was a proximate driver of the massive growth of TikTok. With most parts of the world on lockdown last year, social platforms like TikTok, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Twitter, provided the avenue for a wide array of professionals and individuals to express themselves.
TikTok has been able to catch the attention of millions of smartphone users worldwide even with some very stringent censoring and other political roadblocks across several countries. The United States and India are among some of the more popular cases of moves to stymie the growth and expansion of the platform. That notwithstanding, TikTok has just announced that it now has more than 1 billion active users worldwide. This comes barely a month after it dethroned Facebook as the world’s most downloaded social media app.
TikTok has drawn some stringent flak from Washington on suspicion of its strong links to the Chinese government. There have been some strong concerns about the data protection and privacy of users within the platform. The US government suspects that TikTok could be a conduit through which Beijing spies on American citizens in particular. The tensions however thawed with the arrival of the Biden administration, thus providing fodder for the rapid expansion of TikTok in the US. TikTok remains the flagship platform for short, incisive videos. Instagram, YouTube, and several other platforms have also tried to incorporate the short video model in their operations with varying degrees of success.
The growth of these platforms can really be a fluid process of ups and downs. Instagram achieved the 1 billion users milestone back in 2018 but has struggled to maintain such high standards in recent times. TikTok, therefore, has its job well cut out as it continues to push the bar higher in terms of active users. Whether it continues on the upward trajectory or goes south, time will tell.
The Face ID feature is one of the highlights of the recently unveiled iPhone 13. When activated, Face ID grants access to the iPhone 13 when the phone is brought to a clear view of the owner’s face. It is therefore one of the many options available to unlock the iPhone 13.
An Apple iPhone 13 screen decoupling video in circulation indicates that the Face ID feature will not work if the original screen of the device is replaced by an authorized technician. The video showed the removal of the screen of an iPhone 13 and replacing it with another iPhone 13 model’s screen. The face recognition feature did not work when this was done. The decoupler established a correct connection by reconnecting the original screen, which also allowed the Face ID feature to function again. This seemingly confirms that Face ID on the iPhone 13 will stop working if the screen is swapped with another original iPhone 13 screen.
There could be some protocols needed to make the Face ID feature to be operative in a new iPhone replacement screen. It is also likely that this procedure could only be successfully done in authorized Apple repair stores. Apple uses the Independent Repair Program to license affiliated stores which qualify them to offer the needed repair services. Apple will continue to take some flak for its measures put in place to deter third-party repairs of its products. There are prompts that notify users that their display or camera, or any other key feature is non-genuine when such components are replaced by unaffiliated outlets.
Apple has further deepened the difficulty of getting replacement components outside its approved outlets to work on the iPhone 13. The key component of the Face ID feature, the TrueDepth system is fully housed inside the iPhone and not with the screen itself. Indeed, Apple has an independent iPhone repair program but the reach of this program is still quite limited, even with rapid expansion efforts by the company. It has also been noted that the authorized outlets could offer significantly higher prices for repairs than independent and sometimes small-holding repair outlets. The waiting period could also be higher with the Apple-licensed outlets.
It is unclear whether the issue preventing the working of the Face ID feature when the screen is replaced is a bug or deliberate. Apple has had to provide a quick update for the iPhone 13 relating to Apple Music issues.
It has been a long wait for global fans of Honor who have been expecting the Chinese manufacturer to announce its new phones with Google Mobile Services. Now, that wait will come to an end next month as the Honor 50 series makes its way to Europe.

Buyers will be able to purchase the phone in Midnight Black, Frost Crystal, Emerald Green, and the recently announced HONOR Code colorway. Unfortunately, the prices were not included.

When it launches in Europe, it should still run Android 11 but come with Google Mobile Services.

OnePlus Nord 2 has not had a smooth sail in the Indian market since it was launched in July. It has been one controversy to the other. Not too long ago, an Indian lawyer alleged that the Nord 2 exploded in his pocket. Right now, a story has emerged of a Nord 2 Warp charger that exploded after it was plugged into a socket and left to charge a Nord 2 smartphone.
The incident reportedly happened in the city of Kerala and was shared by the victim Jimmy Jose (@The Glitchhhh). The incident seems to have happened during a rainstorm and resulted in the damage of the charger and also the socket. Thankfully, the smartphone wasn’t affected.
I wanted to get this to your immediate attention. My OnePlus Nord 2 warp charger blasted with a huge sound and it blew up the socket. Luckily I'm alive to make this tweet. The Nord 2 is working. but this is scary af. I'm still in shock😐@OnePlus_IN@oneplus@OnePlus_Supportpic.twitter.com/K3fXCyGzNp
The post drew the attention of the OnePlus Support team who directed the owner to visit a customer care center. At the care center, the technicians examined the charger and reached a conclusion that the explosion occurred as a result of voltage fluctuation. The company also offered a replacement which was delivered to the user.
In a statement emailed to Gadgets 360, OnePlus India stated that “We take any claim like this very seriously. The user has handed over the damaged OnePlus Charger to our service center and has been offered a replacement. OnePlus chargers contain built-in capacitors which control and store energy. In this case, after a thorough analysis, the capacitors have remained intact concluding that the blast has been caused by external factors such as voltage fluctuations.”
The statement also advised users to adhere to safety precautions and warnings specified in its products’ user manuals.

The Huawei Watch Fit New and the OPPO Watch Free are two new fitness trackers that were announced recently in China. Both wearables share a similar design, one that was actually pioneered by the Huawei Watch Fit released in 2020. Apart from looking alike, the two devices also have identical features but try to differ in their own unique ways.
If you are planning to pick up a fitness tracker, there is a chance these two are on your shortlist. To know which one is better, here is a comparison pitting them against each other.
Design
The two smartwatches are very similar in their appearance with subtle differences. For instance, the Huawei Watch Fit New has a physical button on the side of its frame for operation alongside support for touch input. While both are made from similar materials – a plastic frame and silicone straps – Huawei’s watch has the advantage of being available in more colors than the OPPO Watch Free. However, the latter’s leather-like silicone strap may be more appealing to buyers.

Another factor to be considered under design is weight. Both are pretty light but the OPPO Watch Free is the lighter one at 32.6 grams (NFC version is 33 grams) while the Huawei Watch Fit New weighs 34 grams. Most people will not be able to tell the difference seeing as the difference is very minute.
Technically, this category should be a tie, but Huawei gets an extra point for coming up with the design.
Display
Both fitness trackers have the same 1.64-inch 280 x 456 AMOLED display with 2.5D glass on top. Neither of the two fitness trackers mentions having protection for the display but we believe there should be a degree of protection against scratches.
OPPO Watch Free AI Watch Face feature gives you a watch face that matches your outfit
Users will be able to choose from more than 300 different dials on the Huawei Watch Fit New while OPPO says there are more than 100 dials to choose from. While that is fewer than what Huawei offers, OPPO adds the option to generate a custom dial for your watch using a photo of your outfit.
Activity Tracking
The Huawei Watch Fit New has 97 sports modes while OPPO says the Watch Free can track more than 100 different physical activities with support for automatic detection when running, walking, or working out using a rowing machine or elliptical bike. OPPO’s fitness tracker can also track jump rope workout, a mode Huawei plans to add to its wearable via an OTA update.

Both fitness trackers have built-in running coaches but the Huawei Watch Fit New has the upper hand with its built-in GPS and animated workouts that show you how to perform certain exercises.
Health Tracking
The two fitness trackers have a heart rate sensor for 24 hours heart rate monitoring, a SpO2 sensor for blood-oxygen-level monitoring, and sleep tracking. OPPO also adds snoring detection which is an important metric to determine how well a user sleeps. Huawei, on the other hand, includes stress tracking along with guided breathing exercises to help you relax. There is also a menstrual cycle reminder on the Huawei Watch Fit New that will estimate menstruation and ovulation dates.
Other Features
The Huawei Watch Fit New has NFC and thus can be used to make payments and also for commuting (bus and subway pass). There is also a built-in AI assistant for controlling compatible smart home appliances.
The standard version of the OPPO Watch Free doesn’t have NFC but has support for Alipay and WeChat payment. There is a version with NFC that will let you add your bank, bus, and subway cards for contactless payments. It also has the Breeno AI assistant built-in with support for an offline mode.
Both fitness trackers support app alerts, music playback control, call and message alerts, and have a find-my-phone feature. OPPO adds a special eSports Mode that automatically redirects notifications to the wearable when playing a game on compatible phones such as the Find X3 series and Reno6 series.
Huawei Watch Fit has a 10-day battery life
Battery life
The OPPO Watch Free has a 230mAh battery capacity that OPPO claims will last up to 14 days depending on the usage. Huawei’s fitness tracker has a 180mAh battery capacity of and its battery life is stated to be 10 days in typical usage mode.
Price
The Huawei Watch Fit New is priced at ¥799 (~$124) while the OPPO Watch Free is priced at ¥549 (~$85) for the standard version and ¥599 (~$93) for the NFC version.
Conclusion
The two fitness trackers are not only similar in terms of design but also have corresponding features. However, differentiating ones such as the eSports mode on the OPPO Watch Free and the animated workouts as well as built-in GPS on the Huawei Watch Fit New can sway buyers to choose one over the other.
Another major difference is the price tag. The Huawei Watch Fit New costs about $30 more than the OPPO Watch Free NFC version, and for folks who are on a tight budget, they will prefer to pick up OPPO’s fitness tracker.
One advantage Huawei has is experience in the wearable space, an area OPPO can still be considered a greenhorn. Huawei has been making smartwatches and fitness trackers for years and has been able to fine-tune features across models. We should expect better tracking on the Huawei Watch Fit New in addition to having a companion app that is well put together. Bearing this in mind, only a usage-based comparison can tell which fitness tracker provides the better experience.
