Earlier this year, we had reported on LG Innotek and Corning working on Liquid Lens technology that could seemingly benefit the smartphone photography. Now, an from the latter firm had touted the various benefits of this new lens technology.
In an interview with TheElec, Frederic Laune, business manager at Corning Varioptic Lenses stated that liquid lens can help with changing local lengths in cameras. The manager also added that the company is looking to expand the applications of this technology in various other industries like the medical and industrial fields. For those unaware, liquid lens is basically filled with liquid materials inside the physical lens that can change the curvature of the lens by using currents and voltages to control the focal length of the camera.
Laune stated that liquid lens can be used to solve the focal length changing issue, which is when the distance between the camera and subject is constantly changing. He said that the new lens technology can basically focus on a particular object even if there were varying distances in between. Conventional lens technology usually had the lens being placed close to the image sensor or further away from it to maintain the focus on the object. However, these mechanical solutions are vulnerable to external shock and increase the power consumption of devices while being slow.
So, liquid lens technology aims to be a power efficient alternative, which is more effective and quicker as well. Furthermore, this is the reason why industrial cameras rarely use these lens solutions, as per the Manager. Liquid lens is also durable against shakes external shocks, making it practical in various fields like augmented reality.

Galaxy Buds Pro is Samsung’s latest flagship TWS product. This pair of truly wireless earphones was unveiled alongside the Galaxy S21 series earlier this year. Recently, Samsung launched slightly cheaper earbuds called Galaxy Buds2. The new pair comes with some interesting features. These features are being now rolled out to the Galaxy Buds Pro.
Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro
Samsung has started rolling out a new firmware update for the Galaxy Buds Pro worldwide. The new update arrives with firmware version R190XXUA0UH5. In order to download and install this update, users need to be on the latest version of Galaxy Buds Pro plugin app and Galaxy Wearable app.
According to the official changelog, the latest firmware update adds ‘Ambient Sound’ support for calls and an option to customize ‘Ambient Sound’. Additionally, the update also brings support for ANC using a single earbud and a new ‘Noise Control’ feature.
The new firmware update for the Galaxy Buds Pro is said to be rolled out in batches across the globe. Hence, some users might receive it earlier, while others will have to wait a little bit longer.
Having said that, the newly released Galaxy Buds2 offers almost all the features of the Galaxy Buds Pro at a cheaper price tag. But it does not come with certain features like 360 Audio and ‘Intelligent ANC’. The latter feature enables automatic switching between ANC and ambient mode based on environment.
Apple announced lossless audio for Apple Music this year. However, the feature only works with wired earphones. For those who want to listen to lossless audio over Bluetooth, then you will be interested in Qualcomm’s new aptX Lossless audio technology which will provide lossless audio quality over Bluetooth.
Qualcomm says that aptX Lossless is a new technology under Snapdragon Sound which it announced in May. The new audio technology will bring CD-quality 16-bit 44.1kHz lossless audio quality over Bluetooth wireless technology, and it works by using aptX Adaptive in conjunction with Qualcomm Bluetooth High Speed Link technology to deliver the required sustainable data throughput. Even though they are designed to deliver rates beyond 1Mbit/s, Qualcomm states they are able to smoothly scale down to 140kbits/s even in congested RF environments to prevent glitches.
aptX lossless features and specifications
Supports 44.1kHz, 16-bit CD lossless audio quality
Designed to scale up to CD lossless audio based on Bluetooth link quality
Users can select between CD lossless audio 44.1kHz and 24-bit 96kHz lossy
Auto-detects to enable CD lossless audio when the source is lossless audio
Mathematically bit-for-bit exact
Bit-rate – ~1Mbps
Qualcomm’s aptX Lossless will be available in late 2021 via Bluetooth earbuds and headsets. This means that to enjoy the technology, you will have to purchase a new pair of headphones or earbuds that supports aptX Lossless. Of course, your phone will also have to support Snapdragon Sound which brings aptX Adaptive Audio technology that aptX Lossless makes use of. The Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra are two phones with support for Snapdragon Sound.
Huawei has launched a new version of the highly popular AX3 Pro router. The router was first launched in March last year alongside the AX3 router in March last year and has been a hot-selling product. The new version utilizes a Qualcomm chipset instead of the Kirin chipset on last year’s model.
The Huawei AX3 Pro wireless router from last year featured a 1.4GHz quad-core Kirin W650 chip but this new version will be powered by a dual-core Qualcomm chip with a 1GHz clock frequency. Whereas last year’s version has the model number WS7200, this version comes with the model number WS7206.
Apart from the new Qualcomm processor onboard, the new AX3 Pro still retains the design and specifications of the previous model. This includes a four-antenna design with an independent amplifying chip. The 2.4GHz chip has an amplifying parameter of 27dB, and the 5GHz band parameter is 23.5dB.
In terms of the specs, the router supports 1024QAM modulation, 160MHz bandwidth, 2.5GHz rate 574Mbps, and 5GHz rate 2402Mbps. The product supports NFC function and features Huawei’s HarmonyOS 2. A mobile phone equipped with HarmonyOS or Android OS can automatically connect to Wi-Fi without entering a password by touching the NFC area of the router.
The Huawei AX3 Pro router supports Huawei’s one-touch networking, mobile acceleration, online lesson acceleration, remote office acceleration, and child online protection.
The new AX3 Pro router is presently on sale on Jingdong in China for 379 yuan (~$59).
Logitech is planning to launch a number of new mice and keyboards, but to better appeal to businesses, the company is placing an emphasis on privacy and encryption for these products. So, the brand is also launching the new Logi Bolt USB A dongle that will aim to reduce latency in crowded places while also improving security as well.
The new accessories from the consumer electronics maker will securely connect to computers and mobile devices via Bluetooth Low Energy without any dongle. Although, the Bolt dongle is also based on Bluetooth connectivity but will arrive with a more secure tether (security mode 1, level 4). To put things simply, the use of Bluetooth in the Bolt USB dongle is far less prone to hacking than Logitech’s Unifying 2.4GHz receiver, which is vulnerable to the “MouseJack” exploit.
In a new white paper from the company, the Bolt will feature security mode 1, level 4 that utilizes Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman P-256 (ECDH) and AES-CCM encryption. As per the company, these features would ensure that “a Logi Bolt wireless product and its Logi Bolt receiver can only communicate with each other.” The company also added that its direct Bolt wireless connections are Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) compliant. The Logi Bolt USB dongle offers an improved range that can reach up to 33 feet or about 10 meters even in congested areas.
Notably, one Bolt dongle can connect up to six accessories to your computer. It is also compatible with multiple operating systems like Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, ChromeOS, and AndroidOS. The company has yet to announce an official launch date but stated that it will arrive soon and will cost 14.99 US Dollars. The devices that are compatible with Logi Bolt will sport a Bolt logo on their underside.

OnePlus now uses ColorOS on its smartphones in China. Even in global markets, the company has started shipping the same software but continues to call it OxygenOS. Earlier this year, the brand announced that its older flagship phones will be upgraded to ColorOS in its home country. These devices are scheduled to receive the update in 2022. Ahead of that, the firm has now shared a rough timeline for Open Beta and Stable releases.
OnePlus 8 Pro
According to an official announcement post on OnePlus Community China, all the OnePlus flagship smartphones released in China in the last two years will be updated to ColorOS by the end of 2022.
OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and OnePlus 8T will be the first to receive the ColorOS Open Beta update in early 2022. The ColorOS Stable update for these handsets will be released in the first half of 2022.
On the other hand, the ColorOS Open Beta update for OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus 7T, and OnePlus 7T Pro will be delivered in mid-2022. Whereas, the ColorOS Stable update will be made available in the second half of 2022.
OnePlus previously said that it could not upgrade these phones sooner because of various bugs. Hopefully, the company does not roll out a broken software next year.
Having said that, OnePlus does not mention the version of ColorOS these handsets will be receiving. Anyway, we believe that they will most likely get the upcoming ColorOS 12 based on Android 12.
1More announced the update to its ComfoBuds TWS Bluetooth earbuds dubbed ComfoBuds 2.0. The earbuds come with a semi-in-ear design and will be available in black and white for 269 yuan (around $42).
1More ComfoBuds 2.0 Specifications and Features
The 1More ComfoBuds 2.0 brings a semi-in-ear design with a conical handle design and a gradually narrowing stem. The earbuds are quite lightweight, with a single earbud just weighing in at 4.3 grams. Both the earbuds and case weighs a total of 36.5 grams.
The ComfoBuds 2.0 comes with upgraded 13.4mm large-diameter dynamic drivers with liquid crystal molecules (LCP) and PU composite diaphragm. The earbuds support both AAC and SBC audio codecs. The smart call noise reduction feature uses a digital signal processing algorithm to weaken the environmental noise during a call, making human voices clearer.
The earbuds offer a battery life of 6 hours of continuous playback and 24 hours with the case. 1More claims that 15 minutes of charge would last you for 3 hours. The company says that TWS earbuds can play 480 songs or 16 movies continuously on a single charge, and these earbuds would last you through a 7200KM of high-speed rail travel.
The 1More ComfoBuds 2.0 can be purchased from JD.com for 269 yuan (~$42).
Apple is apparently planning on bringing a series of new health related features to its Apple Watch. A new report has revealed that the company is working on blood pressure and temperature tracking feature for its popular wearable.
The news arrives from Wall Street Journal (Via MacRumors), the Cupertino based giant is working on a number of health based features like a thermometer for fertility and sleep tracking, sleep apnea detection, and diabetes detection as well. Furthermore, it is even planning on bringing updates for existing modes. According to sources close to the matter, internal documents have revealed that the brand is working on these new health features that are expected arrive sometime in 2022 or maybe even later.
The report adds that the iPhone maker might be considering to roll out the thermometer feature to the Apple Watch as early as next year. This feature is reportedly based around fertility planning, offering women insights into their ovulation cycle alongside improved detection of patterns for sleep tracking. The feature might even be able to detect when the user has fever in the future. Meanwhile, the blood pressure monitoring system could help detect hypertension by mapping rising pressure.
Similar to the temperature tracking feature, the company plans on releasing the blood pressure monitoring technology in 2022 as well. Although, the reports add that it is facing difficulties in perfecting the technology. This is also reflected with the sleep apnea detection feature as well as the company is struggling to make the readings more often without draining the Apple Watch’s battery life. Keep in mind that these features are still under study and development could be delayed or even canceled.

Samsung is reportedly projected to ship 7.2 million units of foldable smartphones in this year. The news arrives as the company saw higher than expected demand for its two new foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3.
According to TheElecreport, the projection is from an analyst firm Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC). As per this report, the firm forecasts that the South Korean tech giant will ship more than 7 million units of its foldable smartphones at the higher end estimate. This marks a significant rise in shipments over last year, in which the company shipped just 2.5 million units. With the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3, the brand saw pre orders reaching 920,000 units.
Notably, the pre orders for these two devices is even higher than its mainstream flagship Galaxy S21 and the previously launched Galaxy Note 20. Although, DSCC added that most of these orders for the foldable smartphone is from the company’s home country, South Korea. The report adds that Samsung is spending an exorbitant amount on the marketing and promotion of the new smartphones.
DSCC believes that the company is planning on spending 2 billion US Dollars to promote the new devices, which is equal to about 53 percent of the company’s mobile unit’s operating income in the third quarter and 69 percent of its operating income in the second quarter. It remains to be seen whether the massive high budget marketing strategy will effect the Samsung Mobile’s operating income for the second half of this year.
A new report has revealed the global application processor market for smartphones in the second quarter of this year. This report reveals that MediaTek has managed to retain its top spot with a sizeable 38 percent market share.
According to a CounterPoint Research report, the Taiwanese chipmaking giant continued to lead the global AP market in this quarter, with its Dimensity 700 series dominating the 5G market. On the other hand, the Helio P35 and Helio G80 were quite popular in the 4G LTE segment. This report also marks the sizeable growth of MediaTek in recent times as the company’s latest Dimensity chipsets have become increasingly more popular across both mid range and entry level smartphones.
Meanwhile, its rival Qualcomm arrived second with a market share of 32 percent. The company saw a notable market share due to its processor’s popularity in the high end 5G market. Furthermore, Apple managed to capture the third spot with 15 percent market share thanks to the strong demand for its iPhone 12 and continued sales momentum. Samsung and UNISOC took the fourth and fifth spot with a 7 percent and 5 percent respectively. The latter saw a strong first half performance as it gained design wins with Honor and Realme in the 4G LTE smartphone market.

Vivo is gearing up for the September 9 launch of its upcoming X70 series. We have already reported on certain notable leaks and official teasers. Now, a new leak has revealed that the higher end X70 Pro+ model will also arrive in a blue color variant as well.
The leaks arrives from a known tipster @熊猫很禿然 on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging website. In the social media post, the leak also arrived with an image. This image reveals various smartphones and the new Vivo TWS 2. Notably, the X70 and X70 Pro can also be observed in various color versions, while the X70 Pro+ can be seen in three colors as well. While we already known that the high end model will be available in an orange and black variant, this poster reveals a blue variant as well.
The tipster called this version of the device as “Plain Blue.” Furthermore, we can also see the X70 series’ front side, which sports a narrow bezels an a center aligned punch hole selfie camera. Earlier today (2nd September 2021), we even covered a TENAA certification listing that revealed certain key specifications of the X70 Pro. We can expect to see more leaks and teasers surfacing as we get closer to the September 9 launch date. So stay tuned for ore updates.
In the past few weeks, we reviewed the Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2021 (review here) as well as the Mi Pad 5 Pro (review here). And I’m sure there are some people who would be interested to see how these two tablets compare with each other.
So today, let’s look deeper into these two tablets and find out whether the Mi Pad 5 Pro is worthy of its title as the ultimate value for money tablet, or whether the Xiaoxin Pad Pro can withstand the challenge.
Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2021 vs Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro: Design
Let’s start with their designs. If you just look at the pictures on your screen, you may prefer the minimal design of the Mi Pad 5 Pro rather than the splicing back design of the Xiaoxin Pad.
However, if you look closer and, in fact, use them for a while, you would come to the opposite conclusion. The Xiaoxin Pad Pro uses a metal unibody design which not just looks premium but significantly improves the holding experience. And strangely, although the Mi Pad 5 Pro features an 11-inch display which is slightly smaller than the size of the 11.5-inch Xiaoxin Pad Pro, the Xiaoxin Pad Pro is still thinner and lighter. And the Xiaoxin Pad Pro is also one of the thinnest tablets that you can have on the market.
Black – Mi Pad 5 Pro / Silver – Xiaoxin Pad Pro
As for the Mi Pad Pro, its back cover is made of plastic with matte finish, which is slightly inferior to the Xiaoxin Pad in terms of the built quality. And its edges of the side frame are really sharp, which also causes slight discomfort when holding it.
So in terms of the body design and build quality, we think the Xiaoxin Pad Pro is the better option.
Displays
Let’s now look at their large displays, which is probably the most important part of this comparison. The Xiaoxin Pad Pro features an OLED screen with a 2.5K resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate, while the Mi Pad 5 Pro comes with an LCD panel featuring the same resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. One of the most intuitive differences is that the OLED display of the Xiaoxin Pad supports Always on Display while the Mi Pad doesn’t. By far, Xiaoxin Pad Pro is still the only Android tablet at its price point that comes with an OLED screen.
In terms of color performance, the Mi Pad Pro supports Dolby vision and HDR with a peak brightness of 485nits. But looking back to the OLED panel of the Xiaoxin Pad, it brings a much better color presentation with higher contrast, and the brightness can reach at 589 nits. And it also has the wide support of Dolby Vision and HDR contents, with a slightly higher peak brightness. Even in our video, here, you can see the gap between the two displays. The Xiaoxin Pad Pro did look a little better during video playback.
Text sharpness
However, when it comes to text display, the OLED panel of the Xiaoxin Pad loses out due to its pixel arrangement. When we zoom into the display, it’s not difficult to find that the text edges are not as clear as the LCD display of the Mi Pad Pro. But in actual use, I believe most users would not perceive this difference. Still, if you are going to enjoy a lot of reading on a tablet, the Mi Pad will be a slightly better option for you.
Black Levels
After two weeks of using these two tablets, I must admit that I spent more time on the Xiaoxin Pad’s OLED display. In addition to its excellent display quality, the screen experience is pretty assuring as I didn’t feel discomfort like I do on using some OLED screens when using for a long time.
On the other hand, the Mi Pad 5 Pro has a better audio department, thanks to the presence of 8 speakers tuned by Harman Kardon, while the Xiaoxin Pad Pro has 4 speakers tuned by JBL Audio. About their audio performance, you can check it here.
Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2021 vs Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro: Performance, Gaming
Both of them are powered by the same chipset: the Snapdragon 870, which is also the best processor that you can get in the market for Android tablets. And the Mi Pad Pro offers three optional memory configurations with up to 8GB RAM and up to 256GB ROM, while the Xiaoxin Pad Pro only has one version with 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM. But the good news is that the Xiaoxin Pad Pro supports MicroSD-card extension of up to 512GB.
Benchmarks
We’ve actually used the Xiaoxin Pad Pro for over a month. In the past one month, due to the limit of 6GB RAM, the tablet experienced a few minor lags when we opened too many apps. But fortunately, it was only for a few seconds. On the other hand, we have only used the Mi Pad Pro for over a week. There’s no such issue that we experienced with the Mi Pad during this time.
Apart from that, the tablets both could perform well in daily use, including light office work. And honestly, I can’t really pick which one has smoother performance. Even in benchmarks, their results are almost the same.
Gaming Performance
In actual gaming test, it seems that the Xiaoxin Pad’s metal unibody brings a better thermal performance. In games like Genshin Impact and Nimian Legends, the Xiaoxin Pad Pro could maintain a higher framerate stably without much fluctuation or any performance throttling. The Mi Pad Pro’s gaming performance was not bad though, but it’s more likely to meet the threshold in long-time gaming.
Like we said in the review of the Mi Pad Pro, the USB-C port is only compatible with USB-2 standard, which neither supports video output, nor high-speed data transfer. On the other hand, the Xiaoxin Pad Pro has a much more user-friendly USB port with support for USB3.1 and video output. So it’s unsurprising that the Xiaoxin Pad Pro completes our file transfer test much faster than the Mi Pad.
Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2021 vs Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro: Keyboard, Stylus
Now let’s talk about their official accessories – the keyboard and the stylus. The leather-like keyboard case of Mi Pad feels more premium than the woven case of the Xiaoxin Pad. And it’s also a bit lighter. If you are going to carry the tablet with the keyboard case, the compact size of Mi Pad would be a bit more convenient.
Both of them only support contact connection and has no Bluetooth wireless connection.
There’s only one way to use the Mi Pad’s keyboard, which is to put them together under a fixed angle. And the back attachment of the keyboard case is so weak that the back cover often came off the tablet when packing up.
But for the Xiaoxin Pad Pro, things were better. The back protection can be used as a stand for the tablet, and it can achieve almost any placement angle that you want on the table. By the way, the back protection is removable, so if you don’t like to work with the keyboard, it still a great Tablet Stand for you.
In addition, when compared to the Mi Pad’s keyboard, the Xiaoxin Pad’s has 12 more shortcut keys and a touchpad. With the Keyboard, the Xiaoxin Pad can work much more like a laptop under the PC Mode. On the other hand, the Mi Pad Pro doesn’t yet support the PC mode as they claimed at the launch event.
Although in terms of drawing latency, almost all the Android tablets’ styluses we experienced don’t compare to the Apple Pencil for iPad, we still could see the improvement on the Xiaoxin Pad Pro and the Mi Pad Pro. The gap has been reduced greatly. However, it’s strange that the Mi Pad Pro’s stylus has slightly lower latency in third-party apps than its performance in the official note app. Emmm… does it have something to do with MIUI? During our limited experience, we only found the WPS Office app and the official note app supporting a 120Hz refresh rate on the Mi Pad Pro.
stylus performance
On the other hand, the Xiaoxin Pad Pro actually has a very close performance overdrawing latency to the Mi Pad’s stylus under most scenarios. And when it comes to writing experience, both feel good and are very close to each other. But thanks to the higher refresh rate, it was a close win for the Mi Pad Pro in this round.
What’s a bit disappointing is that the Xiaoxin Pad’s stylus doesn’t support magnetic charging and is not able to attach on the side of the tablet like the Mi Pad’s stylus. As a result, to charge the stylus, you have to open the flap at the end of the pen, and connect to a USB-C cable, which is really inconvenient.
Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2021 vs Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro: Software
Now let’s talk about their software. Well, as we mentioned in the review video of the Mi Pad Pro, MIUI is still the main issue that confuses us. Until now, Xiaomi hasn’t pushed any significant updates to fix the issues we mentioned, such as no PC Mode and unoptimized multi-app experience. There were also some other details that often annoyed me, such as the gesture of going back to home-screen. You need to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to achieve the gesture. But when we horizontally hold the tablet with single hand, it’s almost impossible to do it without the help of the other hand.
On Android tablets, the optimization of horizontal display for some apps is still a problem. These apps didn’t originally support landscape mode, and the tablet would still display the apps vertically even when you use it horizontally. But the PC Mode somehow can reduce this discomfort with its window mode for apps, and this is also the most significant advantage when compared with the Mi Pad Pro, even though it’s not perfect. More importantly, the touchpad of the keyboard is really a big plus, no matter for the Pad mode or the PC mode. We also found that there were a few complaints on the internet about crashes on the Xiaoxin Pad Pro. But so far it only happened once on our model.
Xiaoxin Pad PRo PC Mode
For software experience, we want to mention another competitor, the HUAWEI MatePad 11 (review here). By far it has the best software performance that we’ve experienced, no matter for its powerful multi-device collaboration or Multi-tasking capability. But if we are to bring in all the three tablets for a comparison, I will still choose the Xiaoxin Pad Pro.
Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2021 vs Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro: Battery & Charging
After a few software updates, the Xiaoxin Pad Pro’s battery performance has got improved. So we re-tested its battery performance in this comparison. The new result shows that they both took great advantage of the 8600mAh big battery. But pay attention that the Mi Pad Pro comes with 67W fast charge. It only took 1 hour to fully charge the big battery, while we spent over 2 hours to finish the test on the Xiaoxin Pad Pro with its 20W charging efficiency.
Verdict
To be honest, we’re pretty surprised by this comparison. The Mi Pad 5 Pro didn’t crush its rival in this competition. On the contrary, the Xiaoxin Pad Pro showed a more balanced performance. It’s also worth mentioning that the Xiaoxin Pad Pro has been in the market for over 2 months.
But anyway, both of them are still the top options in the Android tablet market. Although we mentioned a few differences between them, honestly we think that the experience gap is not that obvious. After all, most issues that we experienced in these two tablets stems from the nature of the Android platform.
So that’s all for today’s comparison. How do you like these two tablets?
