Huami to announce a new OS and chip for smartwatches

If you have been wondering why Huami has been slow with announcing new products this year, we think we know why. It turns out the Chinese manufacturer that owns the Amazfit and Zepp brands has been developing a new operating system for its smartwatches.

A few days ago, Huami, announced that it has an event scheduled for July 13. It turns out that the manufacturer will be announcing its new operating system and a new chipset too at the event dubbed “The Future of Health”.

A Weibo post by Huang Wang, the founder, and CEO of Huami Technology, revealed that its new self-developed operating system is better suited for watches and can better take advantage of the health features present in wearables. The CEO also shared a video of what appears to be a redesigned interface for heart rate measurement.

We do not know if the operating system is still based on RTOS or it is entirely new from scratch. However, one feature we know it will have is a dynamic watch face as seen in the video below courtesy of Digital Chat Station. The Chinese leaker who has had hands-on experience with the new operating system praises the UI and user experience.

More details about its upcoming Huangshan chipset were also revealed. According to Mr. Huang, the new processor, which should launch as the Huangshan 2S, will have an independent GPU. It will be a dual-core chipset based on the RISC-V architecture, and it will not only be more powerful but also have lower power consumption.

The Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders (or Snapdragon Insiders Phone) sold in India and China will have the same specifications as the models sold in other regions, so buyers will also get 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

According to the listings, the phone will sell for ₹111,990 in India which converts to about $1500, the same price the device will go for in the U.S. For those in China, the price tag is ¥9,999 (~$1543). While it is interesting to see that those in India won’t be paying more, the fact is that they will be getting less than the other regions.

For starters, the phone will ship with a slower 30W charger (Qualcomm’s site says it is a 35W charger) compared to the Quick Charge 5 65W charger other regions will be getting. Also, the ASUS store listing doesn’t mention the pair of premium earbuds among the items in the box which means it won’t be included.

The Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders has a 6.78-inch FHD+ AMOLED screen with a 144Hz refresh rate. It is powered by the Snapdragon 888 processor and packs a 4000mAh battery capacity that can charge at up to 65W. The phone has a 64MP + 13MP + 8MP triple camera setup on the rear and a 24MP camera in front. It also has stereo speakers, Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and dual SIM support. Samsung could reintroduce vapor chamber cooling for the Galaxy S22 lineup

A recent report from Taiwan claims that Samsung’s supply chain partners and suppliers are preparing to develop vapor chamber cooling solutions for Samsung’s lineup of smartphones from 2022. Specifically, the vapor chamber cooling solution could be deployed in the Galaxy S22 scheduled for unveiling in 2022.galaxy s21 vs s21 ultra

As smartphones become thinner and lightweight, with lots of internal components and features that ramp up the temperature of the devices while in operation, the need for robust cooling solutions cannot be glossed over. While throttling the smartphone processor is bound to reduce overall temperature, the flipside implies that the device will not operate optimally, performance-wise. Since device overheating is a serious operational challenge for smartphone manufacturers, it is always a priority to evolve solutions to the challenge that will provide smartphone peak performance while also extending battery life.

The vapor chamber cooling solution in smartphones has been deployed previously in some Samsung products like the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20. It seems to be a better cooling solution than the traditional method prevalent in most smartphones. The vacuum chamber approach entails placing a flat vacuum-sealed metal canister dissipating chamber within the smartphone that efficiently transforms the generated heat through a vaporization mechanism. The vapor chamber cooling solution effectively lowers the device temperature faster than a heat sink or even the graphite thermal pad used in some models.

With a more efficient cooling mechanism, you are guaranteed an optimal performance of the smartphone’s chipset even under situations that could ramp up the heat generation like gaming and other processor-intensive applications. Battery life is also optimized with a better cooling mechanism.

There has been no formal indication from Samsung about its plans to reintroduce the vapor chamber cooling solution to its 2022 lineup. So at best, this remains speculation for now.

Additionally, he also shared 360° renders of all color variants of the upcoming Samsung products, namely Galaxy Z Fold3, Galaxy Z Flip3, Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy Watch4, Galaxy Watch Active4, and Galaxy Buds2.

The Galaxy Z Fold3, for instance, will not only have under-display cameras but will also support S Pen stylus. Further, the Galaxy Watch4 and the Galaxy Watch Active4 will be the first smartwatches to ship with the new Wear OS. Lastly, the Galaxy Buds2 will be cheaper than the Galaxy Buds Pro, however, it will still offer ANC (Active Noise Cancellation).

The listing had further revealed that it has 4 GB of RAM, and it runs on Android 11 OS, which will be overlaid with ColorOS UI.

ASUS confirms the Zenfone 8 compact flagship will be launched in India soon

Taiwanese tech giant ASUS has confirmed via a tweet by Dinesh Sharma, Business Head, Commercial PC and Smartphone, ASUS India that the sleek Zenfone 8 smartphone will be launched in India soon. The tweet didn’t reveal the exact date the product will be launched but it states that it is coming soon. ASUS Zenfone 8The Zenfone 8 was launched alongside the ZenFone 8 Flip in Europe this year in the month of May. The Zenfone 8 was later launched in the U.S not too long ago. The company hasn’t talked about the India launch until now but ASUS India’s head did disclose that the smartphone will definitely be released in the country. The delay is likely due to the COVID 19 pandemic that gripped India around the period it was launched in Europe.

Considering the court order issued over a trademark dispute about the use of the ‘Zen’ or ‘ZenFone’ moniker, the Zenfone 8 will be launched in India as ASUS 8Z. The device was spotted on Google’s website under the ASUS 8Z moniker.

As a reminder, the Zenfone 8 features a 5.92-inch AMOLED screen with a punch hole at the top left corner and FHD+ resolution. The display has a 120Hz refresh rate, a Pixelworks chip, HDR10+, and is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus. Powering the device is a Snapdragon 888 processor paired with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.

The compact flagship sports a dual-camera setup at the rear of which the main camera is a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor teaming up with a 12MP ultrawide angle camera that can also shoot macro pictures. For selfies, there is a 12MP Sony IMX363 camera.

The Zenfone 8 packs a 4000mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging. There is an audio jack at the top of the device, stereo speakers, Cirrus Logic amplifiers, and Dirac HD sound technology. The phone also comes with NFC, Wi-Fi 6E, dual SIM support, and an in-display fingerprint scanner. The Zenfone 8 runs Android 11 out of the box and has an IP68 rating
