Vivo NEX Fold is coming this year but no NEX 5

Mi MIX is to Xiaomi Vivo’s NEX is to Vivo. Last week, we reported that Vivo has applied for trademarks for a number of NEX devices, one of which is the NEX Fold. Now, it has been revealed that the foldable device will be launched this year.

Vivo Logo Featured

According to Ice Universe, the next Vivo NEX phone won’t be the NEX 5, the expected successor to the 2019 NEX 3/NEX 3 5G. Instead, we will get the NEX Fold this year, the manufacturer’s first foldable device. He isn’t the only one that has confirmed the NEX Fold is coming.

https://twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/141129971889059020

Ross Young, the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) replied under Ice Universe’s tweet with more details. He revealed that the device will be the largest in-folding foldable device in terms of panel size. This means its inner display will be larger than that of the Mi MIX Fold and Huawei Mate X2 which measure 8.01-inches and 8.0-inches respectively.

He also stated that the device is expected in January. Does it mean that Ice Universe is wrong about the launch date?

The NEX Fold may actually launch this year but won’t be available for purchase until January. There is also the possibility that it will launch first in China this year before a global launch in January, most likely at CES 2022.

Save for having an in-folding design, there is not much we know about the NEX Fold. However, we expect more details will surface as its launch draws closer.

Netflix launches mobile-only plan in Nigeria and other sub-Saharan countries

Netflix has announced a new plan for sub-Saharan African countries including Nigeria. The new plan is a mobile-only plan and is now the cheapest one the streaming service offers in the region.

Netflix Logo Featured

Prior to the announcement, Netflix offered three plans in Nigeria – a Basic Plan that cost ₦2,900 (~$7) per month and was available to watch on a phone, tablet, computer, or TV in SD (480p) resolution; a Standard Plan priced at ₦3,600 (~$9) per month that bumped the resolution to FHD; and a Premium Plan priced at ₦4,400 (~$11) that allowed users to stream in Ultra HD (4K) and HDR.

The new mobile plan costs ₦1,200 (~$3) per month, about the same price as the cheapest monthly data plans offered by mobile network operators in the country. However, we expect some or all of these operators to announce special data plans that are designed around the new Netflix plan.

The Netflix Mobile Plan works only on phones and tablets and the resolution is capped at 480p. Users will also be able to download movies offline and enjoy the new Play Partial Download feature that allows them to begin to watch a movie or episode before the download is complete.

DJI Mini SE goes official but will only be available in selected markets

DJI is the world’s largest drone maker and has a wide array of drones for different segments of its growing global clientele. Last month Walmart leaked the DJI Mini SE drone to the US market, indicating an impending release in the US. However, subsequent events have now shown that a US release of the latest portable drone by DJI would not be happening – at least for now. The US and other established markets will make do with DJI’s flagship entry-level model, the Mini 2. DJI has now unveiled the DJI Mini SE, and it will be available in selected markets outside the US and Europe. The mini drone has already appeared on some DJI websites like DJI Brazil, while sales have begun in Malaysia.DJI Mini SE

The DJI Mini SE is a specialized drone tailored to suit the needs of entry-level users in emerging markets for consumer drones. It provides some basic drone functionalities and is affordable. The DJI Mini SE seems to be a reworked predecessor of the DJI Mini 2, called the DJI Mavic Mini, although it comes with a cheaper price tag. In fact, the Mini SE uses the internal components of the Mavic Mini and the shell of the Mini 2, and this generates a higher wind resistance.DJI Mini SE

Still, it has a significantly higher performance than the Mavic Mini and comes with more attractive pricing. Essentially, the DJI Mini SE has the same important features as the Mavic Mini including 2.7K video capability, 20 minutes of flying time, 2.5-mile wireless range, 12MP photos capacity, and 3-axis gimbal setup. The DJI Mini SE weighs about 250g.DJI Mini SE

The price of the DJI Mini SE in Malaysia is RM 1,349 ($325), which is higher than the $299 price tag Walmart put out for the device last month. The DJI Mini SE will also be available in Russia, according to the company, while other European countries including the United Kingdom, will not have the product.

Leak says OnePlus and Find X series will be OPPO’s flagship lines

With each passing week comes more details about OnePlus’s future as a sub-brand of OPPO. Yesterday, we learned that the codebase for OyxgenOS will now be integrated with that of ColorOS. That’s the software part. For the hardware part, we have more juicy details.

OPPO + OnePlus logo

A Chinese leaker revealed on Weibo details about OPPO’s hardware plans. The leaker who goes by “Arsenal” on the social media platform and has provided reliable information in the past is the source of the information. In a Weibo post dated yesterday, he disclosed that OnePlus will become OPPO’s new high-end product line! He goes on to say that OnePlus phones will be positioned in a fashion similar to Huawei’s P series and their selling point will be camera performance.

The leaker also revealed that OPPO’s Find X series will be the manufacturer’s second flagship line. The post says that the Find X series will be the first to debut newly developed features and be positioned in a similar way to Huawei’s Mate series.

OPPO + OnePlus Weibo

While we expected there will be changes to how both companies operate, the aforementioned ones are astonishing. Nevertheless, it does sound like a sensible decision and one that will most likely take effect next year. OnePlus fans will be particularly pleased to learn that future models will pack better cameras.

It is important to state that while the info comes from a reliable leaker, we should still take it with a pinch of salt until evidence surfaces or there is an official statement.

Sketches show off the canceled Xiaomi Mi 11 series designs

The Mi 11 series is Xiaomi’s flagship smartphone lineup for the year 2021. Originally, the series includes four models. Out of them, the regular, the Pro, and the Lite feature an identical rear design. The same design can be also found on the Redmi K40 series. Now, months after the launch of these devices, a couple of sketches reveal a design of the series during their development stage.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro Mi 11 Ultra Featured A
Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra

The vanilla Mi 11 was announced in late December 2020 as the world’s first Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 phone. The device was followed by Mi 11 Pro, Mi 11 Lite, and Mi 11 Ultra in late March. In February, Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi also unveiled the Redmi K40 series.

All these phones apart from the Mi 11 Ultra sport a unique camera layout, which stands out among the crowd. For the first time in a while, one could easily identify them as a Xiaomi smartphone.

Thankfully, Xiaomi chose this design over a couple of generic designs whose sketches have been shared by Digital Chat Station recently on Weibo. The now-canceled designs during the development stage of the Mi 11 series are too common.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Series Development Stage Canceled Design
Xiaomi Mi 11 series designs during the development stage | Via: Digital Chat Station

As you can see from the sketches, the first one resembles the OPPO Reno series. On the other hand, the second design is similar to that of the vivo X series. Anyway, it is worth noting that Xiaomi had already used the latter design on the Mi 10T series last year.

For years, Xiaomi has been known for copying Apple’s designs. It’s good that the company has now established a unique identity in 2021 with its new design language. We hope that the firm continues to follow this in the future.

What are your thoughts on Xiaomi’s current design language? Do you think the company should continue using it in the next generation with some tweaks? Do let us know in the comment section below.

Vivo V21 5G with 44MP Selfie camera Lands in the UK fo £399

Vivo unveiled the V21 5G smartphone back in April in the Indian market with impressive specs like a 44MP selfie camera, 33W fast charging, and Dimensity 800U SoC. Later the smartphone made it to the Malaysian market and today, it has landed in the UK at an attractive price.

vivo v21 5g

The Vivo V21 5G is available from Clove for £399 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant. Notably, this is slightly higher than the Indian and Malaysian pricing. The Indian audience has received the 5G phone for ~£338, while the Malaysian unit’s price is ~£323.

It can be picked up in two color variants – Sunset Dazzle and Dusk Blue. It is available in an unlocked variant with 2 years of warranty.

Vivo V21 5G Smartphone Specifications

The smartphone comes with a dewdrop notch display sporting a 6.44-inch screen. It is an AMOLED panel with a Full-HD+ resolution and 90Hz refresh rate. The screen also doubles up as an in-display fingerprint scanner for added security.

One of the major highlights of the device is the camera. The phone has a triple camera setup with a 64MP primary lens, an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 2MP macro lens. Moving to the front, it has a 44MP single selfie camera. Interestingly, there’s OIS support in both the front camera and the primary rear sensor.

At the helm, the device comes powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 800U SoC paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. We are not sure if the UK variant has 3GB of virtual RAM as the Indian model. As far as expandability is concerned, the phone has a dedicated microSD card slot for additional storage.

The phone packs a 4,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging support. It has a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer but unfortunately, it misses out on a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Redmi Note 9 Pro Max finally receives Android 11 update in India

The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max launched in early 2020 as the first-ever Redmi Note Pro Max model. The handset debuted with MIUI 11 based on Android 10. The device was updated to MIUI 12 last year. Now, it has finally started receiving the Android 11 update a year after its release.

Redmi Note 9 Pro Max Featured A
Redmi Note 9 Pro Max

The Redmi Note 9 Pro Max is only sold in India. Hence, there’s only a single regional MIUI build for this smartphone. The device’s Android 11 update arrives with build number V12.0.1.0.RJXINXM.

The above-mentioned software build is labeled as ‘Stable Beta’ right now. This means the update is being rolled out in batches. In simpler words, it is only available for a select few users at the moment. But it should reach all the users in the coming days.

As of now, the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max has only received a single MIUI as well as an Android update. Usually, the Redmi Note series handsets get two Android updates and three MIUI updates. Hence, we can expect Xiaomi to deliver both MIUI 13 and Android 12 in the future.

Before that, the smartphone should get the MIUI 12.5 update, which is currently being seeded out to a bunch of eligible Mi, Redmi, and POCO-branded phones worldwide.

Nokia Clarity Solo Buds+ and Nokia Go Earbuds+ spotted on FCC

While Nokia might not be having its best days in the smartphone market, the company is all set to release a few audio products in the next few months. Two new TWS earbuds, Nokia Clarity Solo Buds+ and Nokia Go Earbuds+ have made it to the FCC listing revealing key details and design.

According to the FCC listing, the Nokia Clarity Solo Buds+ has an unusual design for TWS earphones. It has a single Bluetooth receiver-like built that looks too old school for its looks. It has a stretched-out stem for the exterior built and an in-ear design.

The stem has multifunction buttons which can be used for performing different tasks. With just a touch, one can play/pause, answer, and reject calls. Long pressing the stem will toggle the voice assistant for performing quick tasks.

The earbud also has an indicator light that shows the pairing and battery status of the device. It also has a USB Type-C port for charging.

Moving to the Nokia Go Earbuds+, the TWS earbuds seem to be inspired by the Apple AirPods Pro. According to the schematics, these come with almost the same design as the AirPods Pro. The buds have an in-ear design with a slim stem. These too have touch controls similar to the Nokia Clarity Solo Buds+.

Interestingly, the Go Earbuds+ has a volume control on the earbuds themselves. Double tapping the buds will increase and decrease the volume. The buds also have a charging case that has Nokia branding at the front and a USB Type-C port at the bottom.

Both the Nokia Clarity Solo Buds+ and Nokia Go Earbuds+ will come with different size ear tips, starting from small to large. Since these are already on the FCC listing, we can expect Nokia to announce them soon.

OnePlus 9T with ColorOS 11, 108MP Hasselblad quad cameras may arrive in Q3

OnePlus is reportedly working on the OnePlus 9T flagship. Recently, a leaker claimed that the company will not be launching the OnePlus 9T Pro alongside the 9T handset. Fresh information shared by another tipster reveals that the OnePlus 9T may ship with ColorOS 11.

According to the tipster, the OnePlus 9T 5G will be launching in Q3 and it will be running on ColorOS 11. He added that the phone will be sporting a 108-megapixel Hasselblad quad-camera system. He also claimed that there will not be a Pro model for the 9T. While the OP9T may arrive with ColorOS 11 in China, it is not clear whether the global edition will also feature the OPPO’s custom skin. Hence, it is advised to digest the new leak with a pinch of salt.

A recent leak claimed that the OnePlus 9T will be sporting an LTPO Samsung E4 flexible AMOLED screen that offers a Full HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Qualcomm recently announced the Snapdragon 888+ chip that offers faster clocking speeds than the Snapdragon 888. It was also revealed that the SD888+ will be used by brands like ROG (ASUS), Honor, Motorola, Vivo, and Xiaomi in the future. Since OnePlus was not mentioned, it is likely that it will settle for the Snapdragon 888 SoC for the 9T.

Design

The design of the Samsung Galaxy M32 is uglier compared to the Redmi Note 10 and the Realme 8. Instead of those cool punch-hole displays, it still comes with a waterdrop notch, also known as the Infinity-U display. Further, the phone is thicker and heavier than its two rivals because it packs a way bigger battery. The Realme 8 is the most compact, the thinnest, and the most lightweight phone of the trio, but on the other hand, the Redmi Note 10 has the IP53 certification making it dust resistant and splash resistant.

Display

The most interesting display belongs to Realme 8. Despite it does not come with a high refresh rate, it has a great AMOLED panel with the HDR10 certification which can guarantee bright colors and rich image quality even on streaming platforms. Further, it has a high 1000 nits peak brightness. Last but not least, it is the only one to come with an in-display fingerprint reader. However, the Samsung Galaxy M32 remains very interesting because its AMOLED display has a 90 Hz refresh rate. The Redmi Note 10 is definitely less impressive.

Hardware/Software

With its powerful Helio G95 mobile platform, Realme 8 wins the hardware comparison. Besides having the most powerful chipset, it also comes with the strongest memory configuration as it offers up to 8 GB of RAM and up to 128 GB of internal storage. Right after, we got the Redmi Note 10 with a Snapdragon 678 chipset and up to 6 GB of RAM, as well as up to 128 GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage. The phones all run Android 11 out of the box.

Camera

Noone of these devices is a camera phone, but Redmi Note 10 is the most disappointing as it is equipped with an inferior 48 MP main camera. With the Realme 8 and Samsung Galaxy M32, you get better 64 MP cameras and the Samsung Galaxy M32 wins the comparison because it also provides a better selfie camera with a 20 MP resolution.

Battery

Samsung Galaxy M32 is the king of battery life because it packs a bigger 6000 mAh battery. The Redmi Note 10 wins the fast charging comparison with a power of 33W.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 vs Realme 8 vs Samsung Galaxy M32: Price

Redmi Note 10 and Realme 8 are priced less than €200/$240 globally, while you need a bit more than €200/$240 to purchase the Samsung Galaxy M32. The Realme 8 wins this comparison unless the battery life isn’t your main concern (in that case you should go for Galaxy M32). On the other hand, the Redmi Note 10 has better street prices.

Xiaomi Youpin launches the UREVO Umbrella with a reverse folding design, turnable LED light

Xiaomi has for long released several non-electronics-related products that are also designed to make like easy. One of such is the UREVO line of portable umbrellas manufactured by its eco-chain company UREVO. Xiaomi Youpin has now played host to a new UREVO Umbrella equipped with features such as turnable LED lights, reverse folding and non-wetting, and a one-second opening mechanism. The product carries a price tag of 69 yuan (~$11).

The UREVO portable Umbrella contains three high-brightness LED lamp beads with an illumination distance of up to 10m. The angulation of the lamp can also be easily adjusted so as to illuminate the user’s path at night in other to avoid stumbling on obstacles such as steps, puddles, and manhole covers. It also serves to make the owner visible to on-coming vehicles at night.

There is no dedicated switch on the handlebar to turn on the light. Instead, when the handle is rotated, the LED lamp turns on. The light also provides a superb battery life.

Further, the UREVO umbrella features a fully automated one-key opening and closing. In other words, you press a button to automatically open the umbrella, a standard feature on most umbrellas but in this case, you also press the same button to automatically close the umbrella, making it easy to operate with one hand.

Also, the inside of the umbrella handle is designed with an explosion-proof punching mechanism, which automatically locks the position and stops at various times to prevent rebounding during the process of retracting the umbrella. This design protects both hands from being pinched and makes it easy to close the umbrella without applying any effort.

Another impressive design element of the new UREVO Umbrella is that the surface folds in reverse, with the rain surface inside and the umbrella bone surface outside. This prevents rain splashes when closing the umbrella, and prevents hands and car seats from getting wet when storing.

In addition, the umbrella uses the 210T high-density impact cloth material with a hydrophobic coating outside. Thus, rainwater falling on the umbrella surface can instantly form water droplets and slip off. The umbrella cloth also has an anti-UV layer with a sun protection factor of up to UPF50+, effectively blocking 99% of ultraviolet rays. There is also an inner layer of vinyl coating that blocks light and heat, keeping the body cool in hot weather.UREVO Umbrella

The umbrella frame is manufactured from fiberglass and it is firm and strong, and won’t easily deform. Eight fiberglass umbrella ribs form the umbrella frame. The arched arc provides mechanical support for wind resistance and can easily cope with strong winds and heavy rains.

OnePlus integrates OxygenOS with ColorOS: To provide three Android updates for its flagships

Recently, OnePlus announced the full integration of its smartphone brand with OPPO. The company will now function as a brand under OPPO but it still retains its independence. The announcement gave rise to several questions for which the company has tried to provide answers. One of such persistent questions pertains to what happens to the much-loved OxygenOS. There were rumors that OnePlus smartphones will now run ColorOS. OnePlus later clarified that it will be retaining the OxygenOS. Poll- OxygenOS or ColorOS

However, in a new twist, the Chinese brand has now announced the integration of OyygenOS with ColorOS. According to the press release, the move is aimed at leveraging the resources available due to the merger with OPPO. Obviously, OPPO has significantly more resources and a larger technology platform, tools OnePlus hopes to utilize in a bid to ensure each of its products can receive stable and timely software updates, while still retaining the world-class user experience for which OPPO’s software is known.

Make no mistake, the integration of the two top-notch OS may likely go unnoticed by OxygenOS users as it won’t affect the overall usage and interface. Instead, it is the codebase of OxygenOS that is integrated with ColorOS. OnePlus says that the move will provide a more capable team of developers and a treasure trove of R&D resources.

The company insists the global OnePlus smartphones will still run OxygenOS and assures that the build will now be on a more stable and stronger platform. Upcoming OnePlus phones will run OxygenOS built on the new platform while existing models that are still within the maintenance schedule will receive the update via OTA alongside the Android 12 update.

In addition, OnePlus also announced a huge improvement in its software maintenance schedule relating to the lifecycle of its smartphones. In this regard, flagship models from the OnePlus 8, including the T/R variants, will receive three major Android updates and 4 years of security updates. This means the OnePlus 8 series launched in 2020 with Android 10 will also get updated to Android 12 and 13 whenever they roll out while the OnePlus 9 series will get updated up to Android 14.

The company also disclosed that the first-gen Nord and Nord CE models as well as newer models will receive two major Android updates and three years of security updates. Unfortunately, the Nord N series, from the first-gen N10 and N100 will only get one major Android update and three years of security updates.

All other flagship models before the OnePlus 8 series will still retain the previous update schedule of two major Android updates and three years of security updates.
