Ever improving Smartphone cameras force Nikon to shift its production out of Japan

Nikon Corp is set to end the production of camera bodies in Japan by the end of this year, as per officials. The news arrives as the company is seeing a decline in sales caused by the improving capabilities of smartphones in photography.

Nikon

The camera making giant will be transferring production from its plant in Miyagi Prefecture, which is a part of its new structural reform. Its camera body production will then shift from its sole domestic camera production site to a major factory in Thailand. As per a company official, “The quality level of our products can be sustained even if they are made overseas.”

For those unaware, Nikon has been leading the camera industry since the launch of its first camera back in 1948. But since then, the company has been struggling due to intensifying competition in recent years. Especially with the entry of smartphones that have played a major role in the decline of the digital camera market, with improvements in smartphone camera technology shortening the gap in performance with digital cameras.

Nikon

The company added that it will maintain employment at the factory by continuing the production of certain camera components and distributing the works to growth sectors such as health care and sensors. Similarly, the camera maker is also planning on shutting down two factories in Yamagata and Fukushima prefectures as well, which are responsible for the processing of removable lens parts for digital cameras.

Apple will not launch Privacy Relay in China due to local regulations

At WWDC 2021, Apple announced a new privacy feature that would better protect the users’ data when browsing on the internet. However, the Privacy Relay feature will not be available in China, which is a major market for the company.

Apple

For those unaware, the Cupertino based giant has just held its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday (7th June 2021) where it revealed “Privacy Relay.” This feature lets one browse the internet through Safari while their data being sent through two separate servers to better hide the users’ identity and prevent tracking of their online activity like which sites they are visiting. In other words, even the iPhone maker or the users’ network provider cannot see that data.

Essentially, this feature is a bit similar in function to a VPN (virtual private network), which is something used quite often in China to get around the Great Firewall in the region that lets the government block various websites from being accessed. But now, an Apple spokesperson told CNBC that the Private Relay feature will not be arriving in users in China. Furthermore, the feature will also skip certain other regions like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Belarus, and even Uganda.

Apple

The company stated that the reason it is not launching the feature in the aforementioned countries is due to local laws. At the moment, the use of VPN to access blocked websites in China is illegal. Since the new Privacy Relay feature works in a similar manner, the brand could face trouble with the local authorities. Back in 2017, Apple even removed a number of VPN apps from its App Store to comply with the laws in the region.

Samsung Display to start supplying foldable OLED panels to Google, Xiaomi and Vivo from October

Samsung Display, which has been exclusively shipping its foldable OLED panels to Samsung Electronics so far, is now gearing up to supply display panels for foldable smartphones to other brands as the firm is looking to expand its business.

Recently, it was reported that Samsung could start supplying in-fold design OLED panels to Google, Xiaomi, and OPPO among others. Now, a new report coming from Korean media The Elec confirms that foldable OLED screens will be shipped to Google, Xiaomi, and Vivo from October this year.

This means that the foldable smartphones from Google, Xiaomi, and Vivo could get launched by the end of this year, in the fourth quarter. It’s noteworthy that Xiaomi has already launched its first foldable smartphone as Mi MIX Fold.

Google is expected to launch its first foldable display device along with the Pixel 6 series smartphones, likely to be called Pixel Fold. On the other hand, Vivo will also launch its first such smartphone later this year with an 8-inch main screen and 6.5-inch foldable display.

The South Korean company was also said to supply foldable displays to OPPO but that isn’t happening this year, as per the report. It mentions that OPPO’s foldable smartphone, which is likely to have a clamshell folding design, has been pushed back to 2022.

OPPO has showcased a couple of prototypes for foldable phones and for that, the Chinese company collaborated with Samsung Display, BOE, and Visionox. But now, it seems that the Chinese firm is only working with Samsung Display for new phones.

Huawei was also reportedly in talks with Samsung for the foldable display panels but the report adds that the talks have been canceled. Previously, Huawei had used panels from BOE for its foldable smartphones.

Samsung has already launched a few foldable smartphones in the market and is now gearing up to launch two more such phones in the coming months — Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. Now, it remains to be seen when Apple is jumping this bandwagon, which is likely to give a massive boost to Samsung Display.

Samsung Galaxy M32 bags FCC certification, June launch expected

The next M-series phone from Samsung could be the Galaxy M32. A support page of the phone recently went live on Samsung India’s website. Now, it has received approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which indicates that it may launch as early as this month.

The Galaxy M32 has been spotted with its SM-M325F model number in the database of FCC. The listing shows that the handset will arrive with support for 15W rapid charging. Unfortunately, the listing has no other information on its specifications.

In the recent past, the handset has received approval from other certification sites such as Wi-Fi Alliance, Bluetooth SIG, DEKRA, and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). In April, it was spotted with specs like the Helio G80 chipset, 6 GB of RAM, and Android 11 OS. The DEKRA certification revealed that the phone could be coming with a 6,000mAh battery. Speculations are rife that the Galaxy M32 could be based on the Galaxy A32 handset, which was announced earlier this month.

TCL begins mass production of its phones in Turkey, targets 1 million units by 2022

The Chinese electronics giant, TCL, has opened a factory in Turkey, which has already begun mass production of its smart devices. The factory which is a joint project between TCL and Arçelik, plans to reach a production capacity of 1 million units by 2022.

The factory is borne from the outcome of the Turkish government’s high tariff on the importation of completely assembled mobile phones. The tariff has resulted in phones costing a lot more, which has led to slower sales for phone manufacturers. In order to increase sales, TCL partnered with Arçelik, a Turkish multinational appliances manufacturer that owns Beko and Grundig, to start a factory that assembles its products.

TCL 20 SE
The TCL 20 SE is the first smartphone from the local factory.

It is reported that the factory currently has an annual production capacity of 450,000 units. However, that number is expected to more than double by next year. At the moment, the factory only churns out units based on Semi Knocked Down (SKD) kits but plans to import Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits from China once the production line reaches maturity.

TCL began selling its own branded smartphones starting with the TCL 10 series last year. It has added new models this year with the TCL 20 series which is available in Europe and North America. These two markets are important for its success, so it makes sense as to why it has opened a factory in Europe.

Stadia will arrive on Android TV and Chromecast with Google TV this month

When Google announced its streaming TV stick, the Chromecast with Google TV, it was expected that it will come bundled with Stadia, its game streaming service. To everyone’s disappointment, that was not the case. More than eight months later, it has now been announced that the service is coming, not only to Google’s dongle but to a handful of Android TV devices this month.

Google Stadia

As reported by The Verge, Stadia will arrive on the Chromecast with Google TV on June 23. There are also some Android TV devices such as the Nvidia Shield TV, Walmart’s Onn streaming devices, some Philips and Hisense TVs, and two Mi Box models. Below is the full list:

  • Hisense Android Smart TVs (U7G, U8G, U9G)
  • Nvidia Shield TV and Nvidia Shield TV Pro
  • Onn. FHD Streaming Stick and Onn. UHD Streaming Device
  • Philips 8215, 8505, and OLED 935 / 805 Series Android TVs
  • Xiaomi Mi Box 3 and Mi Box 4 (Mi Box S)

It is surprising that the list is pretty short but according to the press release, these are the devices that are officially supported. Owners of other devices can opt into experimental support to play, though there is a chance it may not as smoothly as on officially supported devices. To play, a Bluetooth controller or the official Stadia Controller is required.

Google Stadia is a game streaming service that allows users to play games instantly including AAA titles over an internet connection without the need for a console or a gaming PC and without needing to download the game. The service is already available on Android, PCs, and iOS devices.
