Foldable smartphone shipments to reach 18 million by 2022 end: Report

The popularity of foldable smartphone has grown and even gathered a lot of momentum in recent times. This is likely due to the launch of newer models, but the significant growth is still confined to a small user base in a niche market. However, a new report has suggested that over 18 million units are expected to ship by the end of 2022.

Foldable Smartphone

According to a Counterpoint Research report, the foldable handset shipments share in the overall market will remain within the single digit for the near future as the segment has OEM experiment with various form factors, designs, materials, and more. In 2020, the foldable devices market only accounted for a fraction of a percent of last year’s 1.3 billion US Dollars total market. However, this is expected to reach just about 1.2 percent by the year 2022.

As per Counterpoint Research Senior Analyst Jene Park, “Samsung has led the segment in terms of design, marketing, and shipments, dominating last year with over 80% share of the foldables market. The company also had the strongest lineup, with various models and variants including a second gen flagship. This year, however, Samsung is facing more competition, with the release of Huawei’s critically lauded Mate X2, Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Fold, and announcements from Vivo, OPPO, and TCL hinting at 2021 launches.”

Foldable Smartphone

Furthermore, the report also stated that there are a few major reasons for the growth of the market, namely the fall of foldable handset prices that are now around 1,000 to 1,500 US Dollars. Similarly, more smartphone makers are also working on this along with Apple‘s entry into the market as well.

Apple patents cuffless blood pressure tracking technology

Apple is working on a new biometric technology that will be able to track blood pressure by utilizing neutral networks and seismocardiogram data. This would remove the need for a blood pressure cuff.

Apple Watch Series 6

According to a recent patent publication (Via AppleInsider), the Cupertino based giant is working on a wearable device that could be paired with Apple Watch. This technology might be capable of monitoring a user’s blood pressure in the future without the need for any additional peripherals. In the patent application titled “Interpretable neural networks for cuffless blood pressure estimation,” the company describes the use of neutral networks to estimate blood pressure using seismocardiogram data.

This device would use a seismocardiogram measures the micro vibrations produced by the heart beating rather than using electrocardiogram, which uses an electrical signals to monitor heart rate. While seismocardiogram devices that are small do already exist, these “wearables” are usually placed over a user’s sternum to measure minute vibrations in or near the heart. So, it is unclear how the iPhone maker aims to implement this new technology.

Apple Watch

The patent from the company also states that the system would function by using an individually pruned neutral network. This neural network would then be capable of estimating blood pressure based on the recorded data. Keep in mind, that this is just a patent at the moment and could just be the company’s attempt to cover all bases, so take this report with a pinch of salt and stay tuned for more updates.

Xiaomi next gen flagship and foldable smartphones to feature under screen camera: Tipster

A tipster has revealed that the next gen flagship and foldable smartphones from Xiaomi will feature an under screen camera display. The technology will be in its ultra high end models and will be the first from the company.

Last year, the Chinese tech giant had revealed that it had reached mass production levels for its under screen camera technology, which was expected to be seen later this year. For those unaware, an under display camera is essentially a screen technology where the camera is housed under the display but is designed in a manner to allow light to permeate through a certain part of it. This makes it capable of taking images from below the screen, eliminating the need for a notch, punch hole, or even a pop up camera.

Furthermore, officials from the company have also stated in the past that its third generation under screen camera display will be one of the best implementations of the technology, as per an MyDrivers report. The tipster (@数码闲聊站) also refrained from offering any specific information so we have no way of confirming the report. But, the company is expected to launch a device with this technology in the near future so stay tuned for more updates.

Sony launches Reon Pocket 2 wearable AC; priced at 14,850 yen ($138)

Last year, Sony had launched the Reon Pocket wearable air conditioner through crowdfunding and now the Japan-based company has launched a successor of the same, dubbed Sony Reon Pocket 2.

The newly launched product looks similar to its predecessor in terms of design but comes with improved internals. Thanks to the improvements, the company claims that it can offer twice the level of heat absorption, resulting in more powerful cooling.

Sony Reon Pocket 2

Sony is also saying that the company has improved the sweat-proofing in the Reon Pocket 2, making it more suitable for light exercise situations. It’s noteworthy that the device is not completely dust and waterproof.

The original model launched last year used silicon but this time, the company has upgraded to SUS316L stainless steel for the temperature cooling surface. This should offer more strength and transfer cooler temperatures more easily to the skin. It also comes with four temperature levels that users can adjust to.

Sony Reon Pocket 2

This time, the company has partnered with sportswear brands like Le Coq Sportif, Munsingwear, and Descente to produce a range of golf clothing that features pockets for the wearable device to slot into. For using this device with regular clothes, the company has also designed a neckstrap accessory.

The Sony Reon Pocket 2 measures 54 mm x 20 mm by 116 mm (WHD). It weighs 92 grams, which is just slightly more than the original model’s weight of 89 grams. It is now available for purchase in Japan for 14,850 yen, which is approximately $138. Currently, there’s no information about its availability in other regions.
