TECNO SPARK 7 Pro Quick Review: Helio G80 & 5000mAh battery ensures good value

TECNO recently announced the SPARK 7 Pro affordable handset featuring the Helio G80 chip and a large 5000mAh battery. Let’s take a quick look at what this handset offers.

TECNO SPARK 7 PRO Review 01

TECNO SPARK 7 Pro Review: DESIGN

The TECNO SPARK 7 Pro comes in a special Spruce Green shade with a metallic finish. The body is made out of plastic but doesn’t look cheap.

TECNO SPARK 7 PRO Featured Review 05At the back, there is a long strip for the cameras featuring a triple camera setup, quad-LED flash, along with the words AI and SPARK inside the same housing. You’ll also find a fingerprint sensor at the back, located in a convenient position for unlocking. There’s a single speaker, MicroUSB port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom.

TECNO SPARK 7 PRO Review 07

The textured design of the back has a frosted feel to it which also gives it a unique look. Plus, the curved edges ensure a comfortable grip.

TECNO SPARK 7 Pro Review: DISPLAY

TECNO SPARK 7 PRO Review 04

For display, the TECNO SPARK 7 Pro comes with a 6.6-inch HD+ Dot-in display with a 90Hz refresh rate. Yes, the display is not FHD. Instead, it’s a 1600 x 720p panel but you do get the benefit of a high refresh rate. The lack of a full HD display is a bit of a disappointment, but the 720p screen along with its 5000mAh battery helps in ensuring a long battery life even with a 90Hz refresh rate.

TECNO SPARK 7 Pro Review: PERFORMANCE

The 2.0 GHz Helio G80 inside the TECNO SPARK 7 Pro ensures that the performance is satisfactory and this includes gaming. The phone can handle mainstream games like PUBG without any major hiccups and for a cheap model, this chip is indeed good enough.

TECNO SPARK 7 PRO Review 03

The unit we have features 4GB RAM and 128GB ROM inside but there are other variants like 4GB + 64GB and even 6GB + 64GB available. Other standard features like GPS, USB-OTG, 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth are all present on the device.

TECNO SPARK 7 Pro Review: CAMERA

The TECNO Spark 7 Pro features a 48MP triple camera setup at the back. The other two cameras are a depth sensor and an AI Lens sensor.

TECNO SPARK 7 PRO Review 06

The 48MP primary camera manages to capture excellent daytime images with a good amount of colors and details. You won’t be disappointed with its main shooter in this price segment. The dynamic range is also pretty decent.

Check out the daytime camera samples down below.

When the lighting goes down, the phone struggles a bit with its focus and details. We already know how affordable smartphones aren’t really great at nighttime photography and the TECNO Spark 7 Pro is no different.

TECNO SPARK 7 PRO Review 02
super night mode

But this phone has a trick up its sleeve wherein its Super Night Mode can boost the brightness even in extremely dark situations. There are other software-powered features on the SPARK 7 Pro like Night Portrait, Smile Snapshot (AI Portrait focuses on the face and captures the photo when it sees a smile. ), 240 fps Slo-mo video, and Bokeh video effect.

TECNO SPARK 7 Pro Review: BATTERY

The 12nm Helio G80 chipset along with its super large 5000mAh battery ensures that battery life is very good on the TECNO SPARK 7 Pro. The phone charges at 10W with the included charger.

TECNO SPARK 7 PRO Review 08

The lack of a full HD display helps in the battery life department, as even with a 90Hz refresh rate, you’ll be able to squeeze in up to 2 days of battery life. While we couldn’t test the phone’s standby time, Transsion Lab claims that it can last for nearly half a month on standby with this large battery.

So the battery is definitely one of the biggest highlights of the new TECNO model.

TECNO SPARK 7 Pro Review: SOFTWARE

The TECNO SPARK 7 Pro runs on the new HiOS 7.5.0 based on the Android 11 platform. The OS brings in a bunch of interesting features like Bluetooth Audio Share 2.0 which allows you to share your music with your friends and family.

TECNO SPARK 7 PRO Review 01

The HiOS 7.5 version also brings in a scheduled dark theme, chat bubbles for instant messaging, video assistant, and an app cloning feature called App Twin.

Samsung recycling program brought back just 0.0019% of old phones since 2015

Back in 2015, Samsung launched its recycling program to bring in older smartphone models in an attempt to be environmentally friendly. However, a recent infographic shared by the company revealed that this program only managed to bring in just 0.0019% of older devices.

Samsung Galaxy A21s Black Featured

According to the blog post (Via Neowin) which celebrated Earth Day, the South Korean tech giant revealed that the company’s recycling program as of 2019 only recorded modest results. While the initiative from the brand is good for the environment, but the figure reveals that the company is still lagging in this regard. Since 2015, the campaign from Samsung only took in 38,000 handsets as of May 2019. This implies that the number of devices that came in represented just 0.0019% over the total 2 billion Galaxy devices that are in circulation as of February 2019.

Notably, finding where the devices that are currently in their product lifecycle are hard to find, especially when these range in the billions. Furthermore, a lot of these Galaxy devices are likely still being used by the customer who purchased the device while a few of them would’ve found their way to second hand market. Notably, a fraction of these smartphones might have been repurposed as a part of the Galaxy Upcycling program.

Samsung

For those unaware, any and every phone that is built by using rare earth metals that are limited in quantity. These are bad for the planet to mind and also involve miners that work in bad working conditions. Thus, bringing in older devices would enable companies to recycle these materials without having to mine them again.

Foldable smartphone shipments to reach 18 million by 2022 end: Report

The popularity of foldable smartphone has grown and even gathered a lot of momentum in recent times. This is likely due to the launch of newer models, but the significant growth is still confined to a small user base in a niche market. However, a new report has suggested that over 18 million units are expected to ship by the end of 2022.

Foldable Smartphone

According to a Counterpoint Research report, the foldable handset shipments share in the overall market will remain within the single digit for the near future as the segment has OEM experiment with various form factors, designs, materials, and more. In 2020, the foldable devices market only accounted for a fraction of a percent of last year’s 1.3 billion US Dollars total market. However, this is expected to reach just about 1.2 percent by the year 2022.

As per Counterpoint Research Senior Analyst Jene Park, “Samsung has led the segment in terms of design, marketing, and shipments, dominating last year with over 80% share of the foldables market. The company also had the strongest lineup, with various models and variants including a second gen flagship. This year, however, Samsung is facing more competition, with the release of Huawei’s critically lauded Mate X2, Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Fold, and announcements from Vivo, OPPO, and TCL hinting at 2021 launches.”

Foldable Smartphone

Furthermore, the report also stated that there are a few major reasons for the growth of the market, namely the fall of foldable handset prices that are now around 1,000 to 1,500 US Dollars. Similarly, more smartphone makers are also working on this along with Apple‘s entry into the market as well.

Apple patents cuffless blood pressure tracking technology

Apple is working on a new biometric technology that will be able to track blood pressure by utilizing neutral networks and seismocardiogram data. This would remove the need for a blood pressure cuff.

Apple Watch Series 6

According to a recent patent publication (Via AppleInsider), the Cupertino based giant is working on a wearable device that could be paired with Apple Watch. This technology might be capable of monitoring a user’s blood pressure in the future without the need for any additional peripherals. In the patent application titled “Interpretable neural networks for cuffless blood pressure estimation,” the company describes the use of neutral networks to estimate blood pressure using seismocardiogram data.

This device would use a seismocardiogram measures the micro vibrations produced by the heart beating rather than using electrocardiogram, which uses an electrical signals to monitor heart rate. While seismocardiogram devices that are small do already exist, these “wearables” are usually placed over a user’s sternum to measure minute vibrations in or near the heart. So, it is unclear how the iPhone maker aims to implement this new technology.

Apple Watch

The patent from the company also states that the system would function by using an individually pruned neutral network. This neural network would then be capable of estimating blood pressure based on the recorded data. Keep in mind, that this is just a patent at the moment and could just be the company’s attempt to cover all bases, so take this report with a pinch of salt and stay tuned for more updates.

Xiaomi next gen flagship and foldable smartphones to feature under screen camera: Tipster

A tipster has revealed that the next gen flagship and foldable smartphones from Xiaomi will feature an under screen camera display. The technology will be in its ultra high end models and will be the first from the company.

Last year, the Chinese tech giant had revealed that it had reached mass production levels for its under screen camera technology, which was expected to be seen later this year. For those unaware, an under display camera is essentially a screen technology where the camera is housed under the display but is designed in a manner to allow light to permeate through a certain part of it. This makes it capable of taking images from below the screen, eliminating the need for a notch, punch hole, or even a pop up camera.

Furthermore, officials from the company have also stated in the past that its third generation under screen camera display will be one of the best implementations of the technology, as per an MyDrivers report. Unfortunately, its still too early to know which smartphone models will features the technology. The tipster (@数码闲聊站) also refrained from offering any specific information so we have no way of confirming the report. But, the company is expected to launch a device with this technology in the near future so stay tuned for more updates.
